I’m obsessed with running speed tests to check my bandwidth in various places, both to see 3G/4G fluctuations and to check the quality of Wi-Fi. The Speedtest.net Mobile by Ookla app is extremely well designed speed testing app that shows the download and upload speed at which your mobile device is currently operating at. The interface on the Speedtest app engine was recently updated and is much more user friendly, with more statistics then the older engine. There are not very many options within the ap itself, as it does exactly what it is supposed to do and most of that process is completely automated with the exception of you, the user, having to push the begin test button. Great program for phones, not so good for tablets! I think of this as a great program, but needs some tweaking. Namely there needs to be an ability to check speed of more than 20 mb. I use this to test my wifi connection and get a COMPLETELY different speed rating from the same site on my computer. I have Wideband up to 50 mb and this does not even measure that high. Beside the point when I test on my Motorola Xoom it reads as only 10 mb downloads. There needs to be a Tablet Optimized app and it needs to be able to measure higher speeds like Wideband!!

I was just coming to give this app a 5-star review -- it worked nicely, the interface was easy, it was also easy to change servers if you wanted too and it was free? What's not to like. it could properly find servers close to me. this app is terrible for mobile connections in the 50th state. works fine on a cable connection, but via mobile connections assumes the closest server is in Kansas. cant manually choose anything much closer either. would be nice if this were fixed.

Did anyone notice too much delay while running this app on an ICS upgraded phone? Mine is Nexus S (non-rooted, officially upgraded to ICS 4.0.3). Whenever I run this, even when sitting right next to the WiFi, it gives me ping delays (to my regional speedtest server) of either 2000 ms or even more. Have tried changing WiFi channels etc. Another phone (Nexus One) of my friend however works pretty well with the same WiFi device.

The results of each of my speed tests on my tablet are just plain weird. I'm managing 800KB/s download and 150KB/s upload or around that with each test at my closest location. However the speeds I pay for are 620KB/s-64KB/s. When I go to my desktop (enthusiast build) I get the speeds I would expect to see. Even weirder is the tablet is on Wifi, my network so teh speed should be less than what the wired would be. It is nice looking and easy to use though. EDIT: Guess it's an update for the app that has messed it up. So obviously as I said its working in a bogus condition. Surprising coming from a company like Ookla...

this app consumed all my data plan (2GB) in 2 days , i moved to a new house and noticed that 4G LTE speed was unbelievably high , like 20mbps and up to 27mbps sometimes, i couldn't believe it , so i start test the speed in every corner in my house , i did 11 speed tests 1st day and 9 tests 2nd day, and suddenly i got an alert notification from at&t that i am 12mb over my 2GB data plan . I downloaded an app called my data manager , and ran 2 tests on my home wifi to discover that speed test app consumed 37.7mb. its literally a DATA MONSTER , be ware and don't run too much on ur 4G network.

Your typical internet service providers are just too slow to give a 4G LTE device an accurate and fair reading. Nowadays with LTE, most 4G networks are faster than your average cable internet service provider. (eg: A 10 to 50 mbs broadband cable connection vs a LTE 4G device) capable of hitting between 30 to 50 mbs sometimes higher, Can't give any kind of accurate reading. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. Aka, The cable servers providing the connection for the test. Just my 2 penny's IMHO!

Been using for 6 months with no probs. Accurate against pc version when checking home wi-fi, so presume ok when checking free wi-fi when out. Most useful for checking 'variable' 3g data speed though. My carrier rounds my data usage to the nearest 1Mb per session. After I'd used Speedtest for the first time it continued to log on and off to my account (without my knowledge) several hundred times within ten minutes and used up more than 850Mb of my 1Gb monthly quota. I've been using the desktop version of this app for some time and find it and this app very useful. The Android app seems to exaggerate the upload speed, however. The number given is typically quite a bit more than the result from the desktop version and more than the ISP specifies. The download speeds seem to be reasonable.
