How-To: Measure your iPhone’s mobile Internet speeds
Calendar16 Mon, 08 Aug 2011 10:46:20 UTC +00:00
You’ve probably heard that AT&T has starting throttling data speeds for customers who tether their mobile Internet connection. If you think you may be in the “affected group,” you should call AT&T and ask them what’s happening. Before doing so, make sure to know what you’re talking about… Install a free application called Speedtest.net Mobile Speed Test and use it to measure the mobile Internet connection speeds: Now before you call AT&T (or whichever operator you happen to use), you should know that your mobile connection can vary dramatically. Try starting Speedtest.net for few times during couple of days before yelling at your carrier’s representative. Speedtest.net Mobile Speed Test (FREE) [iTunes link] Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks Read More

Has AT&T fixed HSUPA upload speeds in your area?
Calendar16 Sun, 25 Jul 2010 12:22:15 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Sunday, Jul 25, 2010 | A bunch of readers are telling us AT&T and Alcatel Lucent have fixed the issues with HSUPA (high speed uploads) and their iPhone 4′s a positively racing up the information superhighway again. Not everyone in every place seems so lucky, however, as our good friend @TCPJ_Mickey, still seems to be chugging along sub-100 in Arizona. You know what this means, right? Speed test! We use speedtest.net’s app [iTunes link] but whatever your choice of measure, post where you are and what your upload speeds look like today and we’ll see if we can figure out if AT&T really is giving more Mbps in more places. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in, sorry to Mickey!] Read More

The MacRumors forums are abuzz with users comparing their recent upload speeds. TUAW reader Becca Holmes tipped us that iPhone users are experiencing uploads that appear to be capped at 100 kbps rather than the 1.6mbps that was a previous norm. Users have been comparing rates captured with tools like Speedtest.net's Speed Test to put concrete numbers on perceived performance drops -- and it looks like that drop is huge, compared to the way things were just a week or two ago. According to the thread, affected cities include: NYC, Central Jersey, Boston, Orlando, Seattle, South Jersey/Philly, Columbus, Cleveland, West Houston, Phoenix, Northern Colorado, St. Paul/Minnesota, Suffolk County/Long Island, Quad Cities, South Jersey, Denver, Detroit Metro, and Cincinnati.Upload speeds affect your ability to send picture- and video-email over 3G, as well as to upload any kind of bandwidth-hungry data using your 3G connection. TUAW gave the test a spin in Denver, Read More

How fast is your international iPad 3G data?
Calendar16 Sat, 29 May 2010 11:34:30 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Saturday, May 29, 2010 | What kind of upload and download speeds are you getting on your iPad Wi-Fi + 3G? Apple included an HSPA 7.2 3G radio on the iPad 3G, so if you’re on an HSPA+ 21 network like Bell/Telus you won’t approach that face-peeling velocity, and in the real world where you’re not sitting on top of your own cell tower in a test lab, you probably won’t hit 7.2 either, but we’re curious to know what kind of performance you do get. So far, on Rogers Canada, I’m getting close to 4mb/s as measured by the SpeedTest.net app [iTunes link], which is pretty much the same as I get on the similarly equipped iPhone 3GS. Let us know where you are, which carrier you’re on, and what data speed you’re getting. Read More

FCC wants to know your mobile broadband speed
Calendar16 Mon, 15 Mar 2010 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
You may remember that Verizon started running ads a while ago showing AT&T's anemic 3G coverage map. AT&T responded by saying "Our coverage includes 97% of the country!" In the small print on Verizon's ads they make it clear that AT&T does have coverage outside of 3G. In the small print on AT&T's ads they make it clear 3G isn't available everywhere. What kind of difference does 3G really make? For American wireless users, the FCC is interested in knowing how fast your mobile broadband really is. The agency has released a free iPhone app, made by Ookla, who also made the free Speedtest.net Speed Test app for iPhone (there is also an Android version). In case you're concerned about your personal information ending up in the servers of the Feds, note the app disclaimer: "Results may be pooled to analyze the quality and coverage of mobile broadband connections across the Read More

Nonetheless with all the fuss around AT&T’s network coverage and speed we would like you to tell us what is your true experience. Is the coverage really that bad? To find out about your connection speed, download the excellent speedtest.net app on your iPhone, make sure you’re on 3G and make a couple of measures. Then share your result with us! If you’re from outside the US tell us about it in the comments, it would be very interesting to see the differences in what you’re able to get around the globe. Read More

[video] iPhone-Generationsvergleich
Calendar16 Mon, 22 Jun 2009 11:22:05 UTC +00:00
Works as advertised, useful and great looking
Solr_Flare 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
A great little app to test and see how good your internet speed really is at any given location. Very handy in determining the best hotspots or for quick net diagnostics in the palm of your hand for your network at various locations in your house.
Best speedtest app!!!
Orbital Death 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Better than any other free or paid for wi-fi / 3G speed test program in the entire store. Great visual display, and history tracker. Works 100% of the time.
Great price, great app
Joelhawkins 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Tests speeds much more quickly and reliably than the other speed test programs I was using.
Great app!
mph_88 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I have used this site for years and trust their accuracy and reliability. In a mobile device I can test a connection without booting up my PC! This is a great application for checking how accurate your ISP's advertised speed is or just testing new network conifurations. The UI is well crafted and easy to follow. I recommend this app to anyone...plus it's free!
Great app
Rami Smidi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Love the user interface.
great app
jeremysmythe 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
It does what it needs to do.
Fast and reliable
N30chan 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Fast for quickly checking the speed of whatever network your on an is as reliable as the desktop version. Only thing is, is that it's not something that's useful unless your curious about download speeds, not that you can do anything about the performance of a network.
Works Great & Free!!
iphonecrazy 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Does what it claims and you can't beat free. Speedtest is the site AT&T sends you to use when your computer runs slowly. The iPhone version is missing the ability to see average speeds of others in the city, state, country & with different Internet providers. It would be 5stars with these additional features.
Nice!!!
Miamisoldi3r 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I got 4879 kb/s download speed :-)
Issues?
[TheBORG] 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Nice UI, but on wifi I'm getting low download speeds (87 kpbs) & high upload speeds (8216 kbps). The reverse of what they should be. I have another app that works just fine. Something might be up with this app... Maybe it needs a good update? 1.0.1 doesn't fix this either.
Quite helpful utility!
Overdoer949 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I use this app to identify choke points in my broadband accounts: is it the web site from which I am downloading, or is it my ISP? Speedtest.net works well on my desktop, laptop, & iPhone, and is free to boot!
Always liked Speedtest.net
RevueX 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1

Great app!
gotzaiPhone 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I actually left inetwork test for this. I use the flash version for my mac. Accurate results, consistant to what my U-verse speeds should be. Not to mention that the interface is amazing! Thank you for this free and usefull app!
Looks great. Works great.

Excelent app
fall-line 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Beats the pants off of the other speed/network test apps out there for the iPhone. Fairly limited functionality compared to the online speedtest.net site, but it has everything I need for the mobile testing.
Works well
FinalAeon 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Works as well as the desktop version and it's free.

It's pretty cool but it would be nice to be able to change the server
Great!
shishkebab 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Good because all the bandwith testing websites are in Java or Flash. Very helpful! (I would agree there is not much of a reason to keep it for very long though)
Ok...

Interesting but it's nothing to keep on your iPod.

Cool buy not so accurate
fordracerguy 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I have 20mbit Internet and this app shows around 6 to 8mbit. Maybe it's a limitation of the iPhone? Speedtest.net is correct.

Great app

Great, especially for a free app
Ping!
brucilius 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Great little app that helped me confirm that my office network is dead slow! Love the history tool too. Would there be a way to see tests plotted on a map?
Great!
Csyversen 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Easy to use and works perfectly
Awesome
krakajap 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
It was hard to choose between this app and the app by cisco but I think I'll stick with this one for the simplicity, accuracy, and good graphics! :) 1 suggestion... When the test is complete, highlight the speedometer with a blue and red line indicating the down and up speeds instead of leaving it set on the last upload speed. I think that would polish up this app quite nicely! :) aside from that, great work!!!
add background
tdd3 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
to icon so it can blend in with other icons. it looks like a circle as opposed to a square.
Not very accurate when compared to speedtest.net site
iBadgerX 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
I did consecutive side by side testing from my laptop and iPhone both connected to the same WiFi point. I ran a test on my iPhone and waited for it to complete and then ran the test on my notebook using the same test server. Never did the results match, even closely. The iPhone speeds always reported slower. I mailed Ookla about this discrepancy before, but never got a reply. So in short: nice too look at, but take the results with a pinch of salt.
Is 715 bad for Kbps downloading?
Coje 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Please help
Great app!
gotzaiPhone 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
I actually left inetwork test for this. I use the flash version for my mac. Accurate results, consistant to what my U-verse speeds should be. Not to mention that the interface is amazing! Thank you for this free and usefull app! Update: I miss the old icon, but no biggie. To help out others here, for deleting results, there is no "delete all", so you have to slide your finger left to right to get the red "delete" button to appear. And as for some with slower speeds on the iPhone vs their computer, remember, regardless of the packet size, the iPhone's processor is the blockage point for achieving higher speeds.
Inaccurate!
Apfhex 3.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
I like speedtest.net on my Mac and on wifi on the iPhone. But it's terribly inaccurate with 3G. For some reason it only let's me pick servers nearly a thosand miles away that get a ping of around 3000ms, instead of the ones close by when using wifi. Why does it limit you like this? I've gotten better — and consistent — results from other speed test apps and web pages.
3.0 bugs
Vhrjcihhed 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
It's been crashing like crazy since I upgraded to 3.0. Issues with 3.0 should have been fixed during beta. I'm switching to another app
