Moving Backwards With Grace: Spore Origins Review
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Jun 2011 15:55:56 UTC +00:00
By – Doing It Right Personal devices and smart phones are the perfect format the perfect format to resurrect the simulated pet phenomenon, mostly because these handhelds are with you at almost every moment of the day. Instead of sticking with the limitations of the Nano pet new games are integrating a more conventional gaming format with a type of species raising platform to create an entirely new gaming dynamic. Many of these games have had varying levels of success on PC and consoles, and now there is a comparable game available for you iPhone.  At least it will be a distraction from the social networking farms that seem to be dominating. Richard Dawkins Would Be Proud Spore Origins is a new game for the iPhone and iPod Touch that is so peculiar and open to customization by the player that it stands out even over similar games. The Great Electronic Arts 99¢ Sale of 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 16 Dec 2010 12:23:29 UTC +00:00
It seems like whenever a holiday rolls around in the US, all of the major developers put their catalog of iOS games on sale in an effort to ride a wave of publicity into the top app charts. Electronic Arts is no stranger to this practice, and in observance of a very special holiday this Winter they have dropped a huge number of their games down to 99¢. Yes, that's right, EA is having a sale to celebrate forum moderator ImNoSuperMan's birthday. Just kidding. It's a Christmas sale. Or rather, a "Holiday" sale. Whatever the politically correct reason for this event is, the bottom line is that you can get a ton of EA games for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad for just a dollar each right now. (Note that some of these titles actually launched at 99¢, or have been that price for a while, but have been added to Read More

EA Holds Massive Spring Sale
Calendar16 Thu, 01 Apr 2010 15:05:03 UTC +00:00
In celebration of Spring, EA has discounted a number of their games until April 5th. The list includes a wide range of titles included below: The sale lasts through the weekend until April 5th. So, I wrote iTunes (reported a problem) when I received my bill. And even though the game's info says that it's in English, and it's not, I was told that there is nothing that they can do for me, that the 'functionality of the game is not Apple's responsibility." So... another $5 down the damn drain... Still no response from the developer... sucks that I paid $5 only to be able to leave a goddamn 1 star review.   #11   Today, 08:08 AM Senior Member iPhone 4, iOS 5.x Join Date: Oct 2011 Posts: 245 Can't wait any more to try this game ! Daily Double: TEN Sales from EA, Cheese Collect for Free
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Dec 2009 00:35:09 UTC +00:00
December 16th brings a major upset to our Daily Double as EA Games has issued an extended sale of ten games until Xmas! Meanwhile, the Appvent Calender chugs along with today's offering, Cheese Collect. Well, well, well. Apparently EA Games doesn’t want to put some of their top-selling titles like Tetris, Sims 3, and Scrabble on sale, because they’ve changed the terms of the 25 Days ‘Til Xmas Sale. Instead of offering a new game for sale each day, ten games will be on sale for the remainder of the holiday season. These are mostly ones that we’ve seen before. Here’s the full list, with brief descriptions: Spore Origins Spore Origins is based around the first stage of the Spore PC game, in which you play a tiny creature (your “Spore”) and must swim around the “primordial ooze,” avoiding larger creatures while devouring smaller ones. As you eat, you’ll eventually evolve, Read More
Sunday, December 12th brings us Spore Origins for $0.99 and iPharaoh for free....and Super Monkey Ball 2 for $4.99! It’s hard to believe that our countdown to Christmas is halfway over. (24 days in December before Christmas, and today’s the 12th!) I hope you all have your holiday shopping done. This Saturday morning comes with our two daily deals. Today, EA Games has Spore Origins on sale for $0.99, while the Appvent Calender is featuring iPharaoh Episode 2 from Studioufo. Early perusers of the App Store may remember Spore Origins. I know that when I first bought my iPod, Best Buy was giving free copies of the game away with every iPod Touch…that seems so long ago! Anyway, while this game is over a year old, don’t let that deter you. Spore Origins is based around the first stage of the Spore PC game, in which you play a tiny creature Read More

But..
Lost In Iceland 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Will they offer a Creationist version that only has one level, already finished??
Enjoyable and good gameplay
si not silly xD 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Spore Origins is an enjoyable version of the Cell stage of SPORE – and EA/Tricky Software does an impressive job of translating the full SPORE game from Maxis for the iPhone OS platform. I particularly liked the creature editor, where it is possible to "pinch" a character to make it bigger/smaller, or (rather impressively) use the iPhone camera or Photo Gallery to create a design for the creature. The use of different "levels" worked well - and the game automatically saved progress at every stage (e.g. when you quit the application) unlike some other games I've tried. In addition, the accelerometer seems to be rather well calibrated – more like 'Labyrinth' (which is good) than 'Super Monkey Ball' (which I found rather difficult to control).
nice app eats batteries
dspeers 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The app is a very nice app. Great use of the Iphone. But there is a cost, battery life. Seems to drain them pretty fast. But what can one expect with full screen, great graphics, and great controls.
Sound problems, just like their other iPhone games
Thommo9933 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
When will EA learn that we need the ability to completely mute the game. i.e. when I have game music and game sfx switche off, the damn game should not make any noise at all. EVER!
Impressive
Schlaeps 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Overall this game is really impressive. The gameplay is simple, fun, and addicting and the controls (while hard to get used at first) make excellent use of the accelerometer. Plus, unlike Super Monkey Ball, you're able to set your own Relative Tilt Angle, allowing you to play the game in a variety of positions and situations.
Good stuff
lunkhead22 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great game! My only complaint is that it should have a feature to prevent the screen dimming. I EA should give a one level trial so more people will buy
Great Fun for Adult and my 4 Year Old
Sutec13 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is just a tiny slice of the PC game Spore but it's an awful lot of fun for $9.99. My 4 year old and I play as a team directing our little guy to eating food and avoiding the bad guys.
Now this is a polished iPhone game!
ntrigue 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The ability to skin your organism with the Camera or Photos on your iPhone is brilliant! Music and SFX are superb. I am hoping the 30 level limit a) increases with update b) doesn't come too soon. Games like this highlight the brilliance of the iPhone/Touch as gaming devices; the accelerometer works flawlessly!
Wanted to like it
Luan417 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I was really hoping that I would like this game but it just feels like a cheap Flow (ps3). Plus the levels are too short. I'm only on level 5, but that took less than 10 minutes. Given there are 30 levels, I sure hope this game packs more than 60 minutes of game play. Overall I just don't think it's worth $10 especially when fLOw was only $5. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges, but I can't help but think this game is a not as beatiful version.
Great start, sorely missing some important things
kc! Bradshaw 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I wasn't excited about this game until last week, and I purchased it immediately after seeing it on toucharcade.com this morning!
good, but
SYCAMORON 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I was disappointed when i heard there was no sharing...WHAT, that is what makes spore so great, and stupid crappy cell phones get it, why not IPhones? Also the story version is really really short, like an hour long. I want to see some new stuff in updates for sure. All that being said, the game is really fun and inventive, but probably not worth the 10 bucks til I get more features
Spores
The game player 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Don't think about it, just buy the app. Worth every penny. Very well put together. I have been playing for an hour now and this the best app so far in the app store. Well done EA.
Awesome, but the controls could use a little tuning
Pismodude2010 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
If you lay it flat, it makes you go forward, and I would like it if I could change that to being staying still. Otherwise to keep still you have to get it in the exact right position, which is a real pain after a while...
Amazing game!
Dragons 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This game is awesome. Totaly worth the price. The game play so far is just a little repetitive but not much (and I am not even that far into the game yet so it may change). I love the creature editor! It is a lot of fun to change your spore. I don't know if you can, but it would be awesome to view friends spore galleries. It would also give me a reason to play again once I beat the game ( so I can have a cool spore gallery to show off) and it would be cool to play games with friends over wifi! Minor bug: game crashed once I tried to use a picture I took. The game saved so it wasn't a big deal.
Awesome and addictive!
wrizacked 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I never played Spore before playing on iPhone and all I can say is I love it! It's a little tough to get the controls completely down when trying to make quick turns and manuvers, but once you get it down, it's completely awesome! The graphics are very well done and the game kept me challenged enough to want to continue playing, without being to tough to scare me off. This is a brilliantly executed game. Can't wait to finish it! Well done EA!
EA has done it Again
greenmymac 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is one amazing app and I look forward to all EA has to offer!
I regret buying this game
charlieok 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I wish I could go back in time and tell my two-day younger self to save his money and not buy this game. Not only is it nothing but swimming, as has been said, but when you hit level 29 it suddenly goes from kinda fun to incredibly frustrating. You get this huge fish that does noting and if you so much as scratch him it's Game Over. Your task is to goad another fish into attacking it, three times usually to kill it, and then he basically comes back and you have to kill him again. Both this fish and the ones you try to kill it with seem to mock you with their bored expressions as you try to use the iphone's small screen to locate one and then the other, and actually get one to follow you to the other. Pair this with the somewhat shaky controls (meant to simulate little currents I'm sure) and the player's near-total lack of being in charge of the situation ( you get to bow to the whims of these simulated fish) and you have a recipe for something that will require, rather than provide, some time to de-stress.
Dosnt live up to the hype
adamsong 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Not worth $10 Very dissapointed
glitch! don't buy yet!
thesauce000 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I bought the full version of Spore for my MacBook...awesome game. I decided to buy Spore for my iPhone 3G...terrible decision. Why I bought the iPhone version is beyond me. I should have waited for an update...one that actually gets passed the first 3 seconds of the game! That's right! The game loads the intro and once the intro scene is done and gameplay is just about to start, the game quits and I'm put back home at the spring board...or whatever it's called. Tried 4 times to see if it was just a small glitch, deleted the game from my iPhone, re-synced, and tried another 2 times...no dice. I'm sure this is an excellent game for the iPhone (considering the full version is awesome!), but the reason I gave it 1 star, beyond not even working, is so that people won't make my mistake. WAIT FOR AN UPDATE BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!!!
Great Concept, Frustrating IU
WWSmith 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I love the idea of Spore. If it weren't for the Leopard upgrade needed to play it, I would have pre-ordered months ago. When I saw this in the App Store I though "what a great idea! I should buy this and see how it is". Sadly, what began has fun now makes me want to throw my iPod at the wall. At first the tilt movement mechanism was annoying, then, when I stupidly tried to fix it, it became down right game-wreaking. I know why the controls are set up this way, but I find them hard to control and even harder to adjust. Now, even when my iPod is flat on the table, Sparky (my spore) still swims around like I'm actively directing him. This makes play almost impossible. Also, battery saving settings are not over-ridden by Spore while I'm in the middle of a level as they are in every other app I own. The iPod doesn't recognize the tilting as active use so in the middle of running away from an enemy, the screen will go dark and I'll be eaten. Another issue I have is that under the "automatic brightness" settings, the glare is so bad in a normally lit room the screen is very difficult to see.
Kinda boring
thebuttermaker 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Tilt and search for food. Repeat. Forever. The excitement comes from having a tiny field of view so you can't see the things that eat you until they are very close. Looks nice but after playing for 20 minutes I have buyer's remorse. Customizing your spore is basically a virtual page of stickers. I don't understand how these things could captivate people for hours like other reviews state.
Dope game!
scion156 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This game is a must buy for everyone! It's one of the most anticipated game for the 3g that everyone is waiting for! A must have game!
Great game, but...
dardenlinux 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Put the creature stage in! Then I'll give it five stars. It's too short right now for a $10 game. No you don't get to have land creatures.
Wonderful!
Ragland T. Tiger 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I've only been playing Spore Origins for a short time but I find it really terrific. So far the best game I've purchased for the iPhone.
Terrific game
Coyotesweat 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I am just loving swimming and eating things. For those who don't want the screen to dim, just go to your iPhone settings, general, and set auto- lock to "never". You can reset it after playing. Hopefully autolock will be auto turned off with an update, but that works fine for me. I'm hooked and feel it was totally worth my money. Yay spore!
The design is too limited
ilaird 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
This is a great game, but the design was too 'stripped down' to remain interesting for repeat play. I have some suggestions for improving the game.
