The apps on Delta's iPads at LaGuardia airport in New York
Calendar16 Thu, 30 Jun 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
A few weeks ago I got stuck for many hours at LaGuardia airport in New York (shocking, I realize, given how smooth air travel is these days). While at the Delta terminal I saw dozens of iPads installed next to small booths, designed for travelers to recharge and possibly play a game or order some food. We knew this was coming, but I was surprised to see them there nonetheless. While the iPads were physically locked down, iOS was pretty much just stock, with the apps Delta wants you to use on one screen, and all the stock iOS apps (Mail, Safari, etc.) on the other screen. I didn't see anyone swipe to the second screen while I was at the terminal. As you can see in the screenshot below, the apps Delta has added to the iPad are: Epicurious, Google Earth, SportsTap, Checkers Free HD, CNBC Real-Time for iPad, USA Read More
JAiB Sport Apps roundup
Calendar16 Wed, 17 Mar 2010 14:04:41 UTC +00:00
Sports fans are awakening from hibernation, and so we sent a little e-mail around to all the members of the JAiB team asking what apps people were using to follow their favourite sports. Hit the jump to see the results, and feel free to leave your own favourite sport-related apps in the comments! Frank I would say Sportacular is my go to sports app for everything right now. The push notifications work great to keep me informed with latest game coverage. I wish there was support for boxing. I am a huge boxing fan and I still can’t believe there is not one sports app that covers boxing. I am hopeful that one day: ESPN, Sportacular, or Sportstap will feature boxing coverage. I can’t be the only boxing fan left, right? Patrick Good call on lack of a good boxing app.  I’d love to see Boxing News do one (if they Read More
17 Best iPhone Hidden Gems From Five Months Of Searching
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Sep 2009 15:21:26 UTC +00:00
In my Hidden Gem App column I’ve delivered more than 70 apps in the last five months and tested countless more that never made the cut. In that time we’ve gone through a site change from www.appleiphoneapps.com to www.appadvice.com and a complete redesign of our Web site, so I’m sure you’ve missed out on some if not most of my hidden gems columns. In any case, this is the column to start with or catch up on because I’m delivering to you today the best of the best. For the record, here’s the list of every app appearing in hidden gems: Sudoku Grab, GPush, Kayak, Simplify Music 2, Simplenote, Mover+ and Mover, Newsstand, Face The Music, Facehack, Dial Zero, Dictionary.com, vSNAX, Peephole, The Moron Test, Read It Later Pro and Read It Later Lite, Pocket Tanks Deluxe and Pocket Tanks Free, Cooliris, Blackjack Live, Flight Control, Leaf Trombone: World Stage, Touch Read More
The NFL season officially kicks off tonight, and from now until February there will be a ton of NFL info, and how do you manage it all? All you need is an iPhone! There are a ton of NFL related apps, and you only want so many cluttering up your iPhone, so how do you decide? That’s where AppAdvice comes in. Below is a comparison of all the main football apps in the App Store with a final verdict of the apps you should have for the 2009 NFL season. NFL apps break down into four main categories: scores, news, games, and fantasy football. *Note every app is free unless otherwise mentioned. Now here are ESPN ScoreCenter The name in Sports is ESPN and they have their own app for just scores. The app is like watching ESPN news, but without the highlights or annoying commentators. Just the scores. Also a Read More
I’ve been keeping my eyes, almost obsessively, on all the new iPhone OS 3.0 apps out there. I’ve especially been looking for push apps. I’ll give you the lowdown on the particular Push apps I consider worthy of download later in this column. But first, I want to talk to you about a problem I’m having. I upgraded my iPhone from original to 3GS last week and was sad to see my trusted iPhone die the death of deactivation. The feeling was quickly replaced by that smug pride I know most iPhone users have when they know they have the latest and greatest. So I looked at my 3GS with wonder as I explored the hundreds of new and updated 3.0 apps to roll out over the last couple weeks. I’m super excited that I finally put a Push-enabled chat app on my home screen. I got rid of Apple’s Messages and Notes Read More
SportsTap adds push notifications to new version
Calendar16 Sat, 04 Jul 2009 16:53:13 UTC +00:00
SportsTap – a leading sports scores and information portal app for the iPhone – has been updated and now has push notifications enabled, yet another app to follow this lead. We’re very happy to see this one updated, as SportsTap has been a favorite app of many since its days as a web app. Many even prefer it to ESPN’s ScoreCenter, and like the way they have implemented alerts as well. Instead of just offering the basic choice of whether to let notifications use sounds / alerts / badges, or serving me up alerts on everything the app deems a major headline, it lets the user choose which sports, and even which teams they want to get alerts on, making it easy to follow a team. The latest update – to Version 3.0 – also includes some UI enhancements and bug fixes. One notable one is a new method for customizing Read More

Reviews

They were the first, but no longer the best
Deviladv 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Pros:
SportsTap
MeTHtiKal 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great free app! Simple to use, quick answers to all your scoreboard questions. Oh and by the way, if you click the SportsTap logo at the top it does bring you back to the homepage, contrary to a previously posted comment.
Awesome Service
Vinconi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Realtime score updates!! Can't beat it! When they were a webapp they were great and now they are going to corner the appstore!
Needs more features!!!!
Big Pappy 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.3
It's a great app. But needs to have more features. •Team schedules. •League standings. •Photos of the event. •News about the event. •Radio feedback. •Injury reports.
Quality does not make up for quantity
Niiro13 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
SportsTap contains a numerous amount of sports. The largest drawback is the speed of this application on EDGE. The entire application is just web view. Imagine Safari without the top and bottom bars. That it all.
Very nice
RPAamodt 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very nice layout and the interface is very simple but very affective! I would highly recommend this!
Faded Away
Mattld 3.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
I hate the advertising. I would rather pay one dollar than have advertising. I would probably even pay two dollars. Also, when you are on a wifi network and cannot connect to it there is no way to get back to the app homepage, or any page. It just stays on the network authentication page.
improvements needed
BtoTheR-E-B 3.0 stars Version: 1.1.3
I used to prefer this app over other sports ones but lately it's disappointing me. Soccer added was great but it's slow and sometimes incorrect. Fav teams for NCAA fball only go to troy??? Hello wash, wvu, etc. That needs to be fixed immediately. Plus you should be able to go to fav teams off the bat and not to their sport first. Also esp. On gamedays this app has been under performing recently.. Fix these and I'm sure you will get more users back...
FINALLY AN ALL IN ONE
IMAGIKA 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just what the dr ordered...take that Verizon!
Be careful with the settings
A SportsFan 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
I have mostly enjoyed this app.Two comments that I hope the developer(s) will be able to address. This evening, the first full day of NCAA football, it takes forever to access the Football section, I can only imagine that the server is slammed. And if you choose to "Customize Sports" by selecting the "Settings" button....well don't touch that (the Settings) button while they are all shaking, or else it will be deleted and then you can't access the "Settings" again. It is easy to delete more than a sport.
Sports fan?
rjanak 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Download now. I was so hoping they'd make this... I loved it as a web app, and this is literally exactly the same. I'm not sure how they could make it better. I wish it didn't have the text advertisement at the top, but I can't (nor would it be fair to) complain since this is free.
Surprise
SZETING 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Surprisingly good. It would be great to have a little more setting.
Does one thing and does it perfectly
Falkirk 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This program does one thing and it does it perfectly. It provides live scores for all the team from most all sports. And since it's on your iPhone, you can check the scores anytime and anyplace. I wasn't sure if I would like this because these programs are often cluttered and difficult to navigate. This program was clean, simple and wonderfully executed. It's so intuitive you don't even have to think. Open, click, click and you've got what you want. Great user interface. Useful. Free. Earns my highest recommendation.
Great app
PitVipers 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been using the web-based version of SportsTap for a long time, and it is easily the site I used the most. Great interface and very easy to use
U got options
mr.dreams 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
For those having problems with this app Try sportacular. I love the look of this app but after reading all the reviews decided against it. I appreciate people who write honest reviews Thanx
Pfft
@nonymous 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Another free app that bites. I took a screenshot today that listed the Jets vs the NY Redskins. Ack! No box scores. It says BETA, but this ain't even ALPHA code. Stop releasing apps before they're ready!
Love it
kbeeveer46 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Love the fact that I can view Olympic updates wih this without using the web or installing another application.
fantastic...and free
true champ 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
gives you the latest sports news in a pleasing format
MLB Standings Missing?
rupnok 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Where's the "Standings" button that used to be at the bottom?
I love soccer.
BiH4ever 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.4
This app. Is awsome it gives me what I need. What other free app. out there gives you all these sports.
Mediocre
Tbone73747 3.0 stars Version: 1.1.3
Good selection of sports but coverage is often incomplete. The UT v OU game didn't even list the first quarter touchdowns! Navigation is a pain. There are many options that require you to go back to a main page just to get back to the game.
Amazing!
Bracesj 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Has pretty much every major sport including my beloved sport of football (no not the American kind)
Great sports fan app
thewheelchairguydotcom 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great for keep up on scores and NASCAR while on the road. So much faster then loading web pages! LOVE IT.
I Love iPhone
The Only 47 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app works just like it should. I got all of my Baseball scores updated all the time. Definitely 5 stars.
Problems
infinityZERO 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
I'm having the same problem as dlfg...the scores aren't updating and it's taking a long time to load...period. I got this app so that I could keep up with the olympics but has proven to be useless because of the load times. Also, the times for the olympics are weird. Are the times in the morning or at night? It doesn't say. I hear that this was a great app before the update...hopefully they can get an update to it before the olympics are over. For now it gets 2 stars.
Awsome!
Mishicki 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app! Had some trouble the first few times I used this, but after that it worked perfectly. I hope they do something to cover the olympics in august.
Best iPhone app
ZTX 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.3
The app I have found in any catagory! Has steadily improved since it first came out. Great layout even with ads. Free
