The 20 Best iPhone and iPad Games of 2012... So Far
Calendar16 Fri, 06 Apr 2012 20:50:12 UTC +00:00
The App Store is a labyrinthine place, and it's easy to get lost in it. Many gamers just stick to the top 10 or 25 apps and base their purchases on those, ignoring everything else. To help you out, we've made it our mission to search out the best games available, regardless of whether they're the best selling or not. Here's our list of the top 20 iOS games that launched in the first quarter of 2012. 20. Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy There's a reason Apple invited Namco onstage at this year's iPad event to show off Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy-- it looks great, especially if you play it on the new iPad. But whatever device you play it on, you'll be soaring across the skies and gunning down bogies. The controls are tight as a drum and the missions come in an impressive number of varieties. There's not much here Read More

Star Marine: Infinite Ammo Review

Posted 02/09/2012 at 12:59pm | by Steve Haske GlitchSoft's original side-scroller takes strong cues from hardcore shooter classics, serving up a loving homage to Contra III with similar mechanics, weapons, and music, plus monstrous bosses that take multiple drubbings to defeat. Star Marine makes a couple adjustments to the typically tough formula, letting you use items to escape death or refill your health, but the biggest change comes from one very modern twist: an awful insistence on microtransactions. Unlike its inspiration, kills in Star Marine are tallied by a timed combo meter, with faster enemy death tallies yielding more points; these in turn are used to collect the in-game currency, called gems. Upgrading most skills and weapons is expensive; counterintuitively, this boils down to either having to shell out real cash for a gem pack or face tedious grinding to get new equipment. Other problems persist. Unlocked weapons can be destroyed Read More
Daily iPhone App: Star Marine Infinite Ammo

Glitchsoft's oddly-titled Star Marine: Infinite Ammo (more on why that's weird in a moment) is both good at bad. First, it's good at heart. Star Marine: Infinite Ammo is a Contra-style run-and-gun title that has you controlling a soldier on a spaceship among other environments. Your job is to fight through hordes of aliens and escape. The action is great and fans of the old Contra game will find a lot to enjoy. However, Star Marine has a few unfortunate issues. First of all, the controls are a little more wonky than they should be. For example, the action often gets fast and furious. When things heated up in Contra, you could duck and jump out of the way reliably. Star Marine's touch controls, by contrast, don't always get you where you need to go. I got hit by several stray bullets and alien flyers because the controls weren't quite as Read More

At the top, we dig into games like Run Roo Run and Star Marine. Later, we get heavy and dive into the iCade mobile, CAVE's poor earnings announcement, and Imagination's latest tech. One of the greatest video game franchises of all time has got to be Konami’s Contra series. There’s just something so satisfying about making your way through a number of interesting and detailed locales while shooting the snot out of anything that gets in your way. While Konami has yet to create an official port for mobile platforms, that won’t stop developer GlitchSoft from creating a side-scrolling shooter that pays homage to the great Contra. In Star Marine: Infinite Ammo, you play as Arc who has been captured by an alien race in order to become enslaved and do some manly work for them like killing spiders, setting up their home theater system, or even opening a jar of pickles. Fortunately for Arc, he happens to be a trained elite Star Marine and decides to use his years of training in order to free himself from enslavement and make those who Read More
[iPhone-Game] Star Marine: Infinite Ammo (+ Video)
Calendar16 Thu, 12 Jan 2012 13:12:44 UTC +00:00
Read More

There are a few minor glitches I came across after playing for about 20 minutes such as the game shutting off between levels (but progress is auto saved) and some of the achievement notifications appear upside down. Not sure if it's just lagging a bit but it doesn't seem as fast paced as you would expect. The movement controlIs a little awkward. The actual gameplay is pretty cool and it has nice sound effects but as I mentioned earlier the action on screen should be a little more fast paced to give it the intensity that it feels it should have. But I've only played the first two levels so far and I played it on my 2nd gen. Def reminds me of Contra and the actual game play is fun and I haven't even tried the other weapons yet. It's def worth downloading.
