Educators Love Star Walk and Solar Walk
Calendar16 Mon, 30 Jan 2012 20:30:01 UTC +00:00
By Phillip Levin on January 30th, 2012 Apps in the classroom? Heck yeah. Educators who use new technology in the classroom are awesome. I remember one of my journalism professors regularly using his iPad as a tool in his lectures. I thought doing so was an innovative and creative way of utilizing the at-the-time new device. Vito Technology dropped us a line this week to let us know that its own apps are increasingly being used by educators and students in the pursuit of learning. The studio’s three apps, Star Walk, Solar Walk, and >Geo Walk, are being called excellent educational tools. News of the apps being popular educational tools, though, doesn’t come too surprising. I had played around with Solar Walk in particular and was quite impressed. In particular, it seems the two astronomy apps have been the most useful according to feedback from educators. Star Walk uses the iPhone Read More

App Showdown: Star Gazers

Posted 01/17/2012 at 10:30am | by J Keirn-Swanson Readers in the Pacific Northwest and certain portions of the midwest will understand: You hear of an awesome celestial event, set your alarm, wake at 3am, run outside, and it's all clouds as far as the eye can see. Galileo saw moons orbiting Jupiter with just his crummy telescope, but you can't even make out Orion with all the light pollution. Where the heck do you look when you want to even try to find a constellation? You look in the App Store, silly. Star Walk from Vito Technology Inc. is what immediately comes to mind for most people when you discuss astronomy apps. One of the first to arrive on the scene with this kind of app, Star Walk is still the one to beat whenever the topic comes up in conversation.  Lots in the sky, little on the app's controls With Read More

To date, I still don’t get 3-D TV. Oh, I get it — I understand it — but I fail to see the appeal. I do think I’ve found an exception though; it’s called Solar Walk, and it’s a $3 astronomy app for iOS devices that can work in concert with 3-D televisions. More on that in a minute. Outer space was a big deal to me when I was growing up. I lived a few blocks from a planetarium. And once I was old enough to head out and do stuff on my own, I pretty much spent my time there (I know — sexy), head pointed ceilingwards as I took in yet another space show. My planetarium got rebuilt years ago and is now way too high-tech and shiny for me to properly enjoy (I like my planetariums like I like my episodes of “Breaking Bad” — as dark Read More
5 iPhone apps for hiking
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Sep 2011 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Now that the weather is cooling down here in the States, it's time to spend some time outdoors. I love a good hike, and they're made even more enjoyable with a good app by my side. Track distance, brag about your workout or even find a hidden "treasure" during your excursion with these apps. Have fun (all prices are USD). iMapMyHIKE (Free lite version, $1.99 pro) I used iMapMyHIKE all summer. When you start out, launch the app and note your location. As you move, the app tracks your course. It's fun to see where you've traveled as well as build a real-time map back to your starting point, should you get confused. Of course, that's just the beginning. You can share your hiking stats with friends (like distance travelled, pace and so on), spot hiking companions running the app on a map and log your data to keep track of Read More

Daily iPad App: Solar Walk
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Sep 2011 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
Want to tour the Solar System? Solar Walk is a just-updated universal iOS app that allows you to do just that. The new version has support for 3D, so you get some rather stunning renditions of planets and satellites that are more realistic than what's available in a 2D presentation. I reviewed the app in 2010 and found it to be very educational. Solar Walk would be very nice for teachers, who could plug it into external monitors in the classroom. As near as I can tell, the app doesn't support the high end 3D method that uses shutter glasses or polarizing filters, but instead uses the tried and true red/blue anaglyphic glasses that became popular in the fifties. They are cheap, and easily available from suppliers like Amazon. Note: A late email from the developer says you can use the app with a 3D TV although it is not noted Read More

It was 50 years ago today that the son of a Russian farmer rocketed into space and became the first man to orbit the earth. Yuri Gagarin's 108 minute trip in his Vostok spacecraft ushered in the era of manned space flight, as the US followed up with the Mercury, Gemini, and later the Apollo missions to the moon. In 1975 the US and Russia stopped competing and began the Apollo-Soyuz missions. Joint missions continue today on the International Space Station. To celebrate the event, Distant Suns 2 for the iPhone and iPod touch is free today only. The app is a pretty complete star map, with 130,000 stars, 88 constellations and the Messier catalog of galaxies, nebula and star clusters. I've reviewed the app in the past and found it a worthwhile purchase. It's even better for free. Author Mike Smithwick produced one of the first computerized star map programs Read More
Macworld Expo 2011: Vito Technology updates the Walk apps
Calendar16 Tue, 01 Feb 2011 08:00:00 UTC +00:00
Russian company Vito Technology was in one of the booths around the Mobile App Showcase at Macworld 2011 last week, and they kindly sat down to show off new versions of their apps, all coming up in the next month or so as free updates on the App Store. Popular astronomy app Star Walk was first. It's getting a visual enhancement in the next version, with a brand new sky and a new look to the stars that's more visually interesting than the current setup. The other feature that will be added is a "calendar of celestial events," where things like meteor showers or lunar eclipses will be tracked (per your location) so that you can see when something interesting is coming up. Later on, Vito wants to add other cultural displays to the app, including constellation charts and other star maps from Hawaiian, Arabic and Native American viewpoints. Star Walk Read More

Happy Birthday Star Walk, Presents For Our Readers

By Kyle Flanigan on November 10th, 2010 Star Walk celebrates version 5 of its application with a plethora of new updates, and a promotional code giveaway right here at 148Apps. VITO Technology‘s award-winning astronomy application for iPad and iPhone turned two years old yesterday, and to mark its birthday there’s a major update revision on the line as well as a promotional code giveaway right here. Star Walk, which holds the title of official Apple Design Award (iPad Developer Showcase) 2010 Winner, remains the top-paid application in the Education section of the App Store, based on its ability to show the true workings of the Heavens above through the iPhone and iPad’s in-built GPS in an easy to use interface. View constellations, stars and planets in new ways by holding your device up to the sky. It’s a very impressive application – awarded 4.5 stars by 148Apps – and was marked Read More
What makes one of the iPhone’s most critically acclaimed app tick?  It all starts with the people who put in countless hours coding, testing, planning, and staging — the developers. Murad Nazaraliev — head of development for StarWalk — was gracious enough to sit down with us and reveal some of his team’s secrets to success.  Plus he divulges info on a few new features to be on the lookout for in future updates… We concentrated on three main things: interface, usability and “the picture”. We’ve spent a huge amount of time arguing about how to make easiest-to-use interface. Only in the result of real verbal battles had every button found its place. The same amount of effort we have spent on “no less than 30 FPS” for iPhone 2G, which was not a simple task (none of our competitors managed to come even close to that). We are a small Read More

It's that future tech we've all been waiting for--point your phone at something in the real world, and gain all the cyber knowledge the interwebs can provide. Wondering what species of tree you're looking at? Just direct your iPhone camera to it, and Wikipedia fills you in with a textual overlay. Unfortunately, the technology still has plenty of kinks to work out. Most AR apps are gimmicks, offer super niche utility, or just don't work very well. But we have to admit, it is getting better with every update. The App Store has some pretty neat augmented reality offerings that take great advantage of the iPhone's geolocation abilities. Of course with the neat comes the not so neat too, so we at Mac|Life have done you the service of sifting out the junk. We've gone through just about every augmented reality Read More
Wow! This App Lets You Identify Planes in the Sky
Calendar16 Tue, 21 Sep 2010 13:00:42 UTC +00:00
There are a few apps that I like to use to show people what the iPhone can do. Star Walk has always been my favorite show off app but it seems that it’s going to be dethroned by Plane Finder AR. Plane Finder AR uses the iPhone augmented reality capability of your iPhone to show you information about planes flying around you. Simply point your iPhone at a plane flying by and you will see the flight number, aircraft registration, speed, altitude and how far away it is… Here is more info from the app description: Plane Finder AR blends the data from our Plane Finder virtual radar apps with the Augmented Reality capabilities of the iPhone to show you what is flying overhead. The app is fun to use and is very dynamic. It will work in all areas for which we have coverage. Please check our web map at http://www.planefinder.net Read More
Tonight is the first-ever International Observe the Moon Night. If you have an iOS device, you can get even more out of observing our nearest neighbor and learning about what its made of, how it came to be, and how to observe it. Free apps like Moon Globe will allow you to explore the lunar service in detail tonight, or any night. If you're a social, rather than a solitary backyard astronomer, then here's a map to help you find local public observing groups all over the world. Expect to find some telescopes to get you a live close-up view. Since you'll already be outside, don't forget some of the great astronomy apps that help orient you to the visible planets and constellations. I like Star Walk, Pocket Universe and Distant Suns. Ten iPhone and iPad Apps for the Stargazing Astronomy Fan
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Aug 2010 14:18:54 UTC +00:00
With the news that the Sun has sent a blast of plasma towards the Earth hitting the headlines this week, thanks mainly to the prospect of the famed Northern Lights potentially being visible from parts of the UK and North America, we thought it was a good time to highlight the wealth of astronomy-related applications that are available for the iPhone and the iPad. Here are ten which standout: You can purchase an iPhone app for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, but we’ve linked to the iPad-specific version, simply because we think it benefits from the increased screen size.  The night sky is still rendered on your iPad, with the positions and names of stars and planets, plus outlines of constellations and lunar phase information.  It’s easy to use too.  $4.99/£2.99. Well-known and beautifully designed, this is perhaps aimed more at entertaining the casual user than the hardcore enthusiast, but Read More

Our own Mel Martin is a big fan of Vito Technology's Star Walk iPhone app, so when the company's rep stopped by our booth at Macworld this week to show us two apps that they're working on right now, we couldn't refuse. The first app we saw was called Solar Walk, and while Star Walk will help you find and explore information about the stars, Solar Walk is designed to do the same with planets. The app features a beautiful (and accurate) simulation of the solar system, complete with all of the planets orbiting trails, and an adjustable clock so that you can see where Mars will be in 2029, if you so choose. The app, which should be out in about a month, we were told, lets you pinch and zoom down on any planet, so that you can even see any moons -- one zoom in to Jupiter, and Read More

45 Applications That Will Be On My iPhone Next Year
Calendar16 Thu, 31 Dec 2009 16:00:58 UTC +00:00
A couple weeks ago I wrote about the top 40 iPhone apps of 2009 in the App Store. This article got quite a bit of success (especially on Twitter) and a few of you asked me what where my favorite iPhone apps of 2009. I’ve had many apps come and go this year so I guess the best way to tell what my favorites are is to tell you the one I will keep with me for next year. Facebook – Need I say more? Indispensable if you have a Facebook account (note: you may want to join our Facebook page). Flight Control – My favorite iPhone game. Ever! It’s fun and addicting. My best score is 357 planes landed. Can you do better? Bejeweled 2 – My fiancée turned me on this game. I used to play it a lot but I got over it. Tap Tap Revenge 3 – Read More

FCC Chairman Worries About iPhone Spectrum Demands
Calendar16 Mon, 26 Oct 2009 10:00:17 UTC +00:00
In a talk with Businessweek last Friday, the Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski expressed a new problem concerning the incredible grow of the iPhone and similar devices on the market. The available spectrum for mobile communication is starting to be seriously eaten up by the increased data usage on carrier networks. Here is the problem in his own words : The demands that are being created by the iPhone and other mobile broadband technologies threaten to outstrip the amount of spectrum that’s available for commercial mobile, and it’s important for the country that we get long-term planning right here because it takes time to identify spectrum and put it on the market. We’re looking at potential innovations in spectrum policy, like secondary licensing for spectrum, and other more creative ideas for unlicensed spectrum. Businessweek also discovered that he is actually an iPhone user himself (his favorite app would be Star Walk). Read More

Star Walk [iTunes link] has been updated and improved with new features that let you leave the earth and look back at our home planet in beautifully rendered views. Star Walk uses GPS to get your location, and shows you the current sky above your head. Since we last looked at Star Walk the app has added augmented reality, so as you orient your phone to the sky (iPhone 3GS only) you see star maps that show just where you are pointing. You can zoom into any object and get a closeup view of the surface details of planets, or even close-ups of deep sky objects like star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. You can click on a button and get more info on the object, and if that isn't enough you can connect to Wikipedia for even more. Star Walk is one of the great demos of Apple technology. App Review: Star Walk for iPhone
Calendar16 Sun, 06 Sep 2009 16:03:20 UTC +00:00
By Matt Sawyers, Sunday, Sep 6, 2009 | Star Walk [$4.99 - iTunes link] is the best star-gazing application I have come across for the iPhone. Many of the features found within the application cannot be found in any others! This is one of the best developed and executed applications I have seen to hit the app store. When the app opens, it will take a moment to load. I noticed that the app states on the loading page The Universe Yours to Discover This is an awesome statement and very true to the app. The user interface is very easy to navigate. When you get into the application, the app will automatically detect your location and arrange the sky as it is currently for you. You can use your finger to pan around the sky. For 3GS users, tap on the screen once, then lift the iPhone up over Read More
I’m an astronomy newbie. I have a telescope and enjoy checking out the night sky, but when it comes to knowing what I’m talking about… Heck, I know there are stars and galaxies, and, oh yeah, that’s the moon over there… that’s about the extent of my knowledge Thankfully, for people like me there’s a new and very popular app in the App Store called ‘Star Walk’. The app works with the built-in compass in the iPhone 3GS to provide you with up-to-the-second information. An amazing feature called ‘Star Spotter’ delivers a live representation of what you’re seeing in the night sky above. Very cool. Many other features are built-in to this nifty app, including a ‘time machine’ that lets you shift time by sliding your finger… doing so moves the sky above to how it was at that exact point in time. Moon phases and planets are also covered within, Read More
The stars in your pocket: Pocket Universe for iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 14 May 2009 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
I've always loved astronomy. There is something about the tremendous size and scope of our observable universe that is inspiring and humbling at the same time. It's why I get excited about the variety of astronomy programs for the iPhone. The latest is called Pocket Universe [App Store link]. For the $2.99US price, your iPhone or iPod touch gets a star atlas of 10,000 objects, a guide to moon phases, a list of what's up on any particular night including meteor showers and any visible planets, as well as live links to astronomy news. The app also includes an accurate rendering of the positions of the 4 easily visible moons of Jupiter, but your best bet in seeing a planet this time of year is Saturn which is high in the southeast. As we move toward summer, more and more people will be heading outdoors. That makes it it is a Read More

Unique and fun U.I. - Buy it.
JoeTooCool 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is worth the price. I've used many planetarium programs, but this UI is unlike anything else. Don't compare this to a full planetarium program. It's really just eye candy: rather than plotting the stars dynamically, the stars are part of one large image that acts as a movable backdrop; the search function omits comets, galaxies, deep sky objects, etc. However, the planets are mapped nicely, as are the constellation figures. Time-elapse is automated beautifully with a clever scroll bar: nudge it to advance in years, months, days or hours. Overall, a fabulous user experience and worth the price.
Wow
Batagai 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
One word, wow. Amazing to see what is up there, and know what you are looking at. I especially enjoy using in conjunction with "Darkness". As the sun sets, search for the moon and tweak the time machine to see how your evening sky will unfold. And you can see the Southern Cross for the first time without actually going that way. Night mode in red might be nice.
Amazing
Murphy D 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was expecting this to be reasonably nice, but I was wrong. It blew me away. Not only are the graphics amazing, but the interface is super intuitive. It was clearly designed with the iPhone in mind. Many little touches (like a flare effect when you look at the sun) put this one over the top. Just wow.
Virtually Worthless for Stargazing, but Nice Eye Candy
Kyosu 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Beautiful cg picture of the sky, but since it is a single image instead of plotted stars, you can't eliminate lower magnitude stars to see a more useful view. Also, the image is difficult to orient if you move it by hand. Limited menu of available locations and no way to enter coordinates without GPS or location services, and most locations are in N. America. VERY ANNOYING sound effects [for these alone I'll delete the app and write off my 5 bucks]. For me, this was a big mistake and I'm feeling ripped off for believing the developers hype about its usefulness. If all you want is a pretty, and fanciful, drawing of the night sky here it is. If you want a program that will really be useful for stargazing, move along to something else. The useful programs cost twice as much, but there's a reason for that. They are much more functional in allowing useful views, and have larger data bases of locations and objects. Don't make the same mistake I did - this is NO BARGAIN.
An educational app disguised as a game
Dan Schroeder 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
There are now seven serious star-charting apps in the iTunes Store (as of 30 January 2009). Each is good in its own ways, and each has its weaknesses.
The best astro app in App Store
Truth-Seeker 5.0 stars Version: 1.21
Nice and cool. After about an hour of playing with it I learned much new about our Solar system :) Time machine is a brilliant idea. One of the best astro apps in the App Store, worth its money 100% (compared it with Starmap, Distant suns, GoSkyWatch and a few knock-offs like Stars or Astronomer)
Great UI, very informative
Joeychen 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Easy to use. I've always wonder where certain stars are or whether what I'm seeing are planets. This is the perfect tool. Now my nightly walks with the dog are interesting. I wish it had sattelite info too.
mediocre app
Luke S 81 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
My complaints with this app:
Wow!
bill sanchez 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I use Starry Night Pro at home, 95% of the time just to find out what is where in the sky, and when planets are going to be where so I can see them with my telescope, etc. Star walk takes care of this job, and does it really well. Great time machine implementation, with object tracking. So smooth to scroll around the sky. Very impressive. I would have honestly been happy paying $20 for this program.
Ahhhh
Rob in Key West 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Finally figured out what those two bright stars are in the West! Venus and Jupiter! This is one of the best apps out there! Cutting edge graphics, outstanding overlays, and a universe of information. I would have bought the IPOD Touch just for this App??,! (well maybe). Anyway definately worth the the $4.99, would me nice to get more info on the objects like distance and type of star but I am not complaining!
Fantastic!
Av8t0r 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I will add to the praises for this great little app. The graphics and interface are top notch, so of course I'd like to see it do more:). My wish list (beyond the deep space objects and night vision updates already promised), a "light slider" that could fade out the dimmer stars to match current viewing conditions, filters to selectively omit classes of objects, and more info in the object database, including photos. Great job, I'm looking forward to the updates!
Beautiful!!
Angus08 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love space! This app is well worth the money. The object catalogue is HUGE...just about every star is clickable! I really like all the aesthetic embellishments like the changing sky color, lens flares, and fading constellation silhouettes. The next step I would like to see would be more detailed information on the planets and maybe a distance-from-earth stat for some of the more well known stars. This app works well as a compass and sunrise/sunset predictor too!
Suggestion
RedCardinal57 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Absolutely love this app. Incredibly awesome interface with the coolest futuristic sounds and "Monority Report" esque features. When selecting an object would love to be able to access more data on the info button, such as the planets composition, diameter, age, etc. This would add tremendously really giving this app an even more impresive depth. I definitely recommend this app to anyone who has the least bit interest in star gazing.
Like fly through the Stars!

as it happens 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I have always wondered why Orion looked upside down to my northern hemisphere eyes when I was in Brazil. Sure enough, I put in a location in Brazil, and milleseconds later, I was looking at a sky that I haven't seen in ages. The was Orion, high overhead, and upside down. Now that I write this, I think I know why it's upside down: my northern perspective is one edge of a cone shape, my perpsective in the south is the other edge, and they converge at the pointy part of the cone at the constellation I'm looking at. Meanwhile, my body sense of up is a 'given' in both locations, this makes it seem like Orion is upside down to my body's sense of up. Imagining sighting along the edges of the cone - since the earth is a sphere, from the frame of reference of the constellation, I'm the one who's flip-flopping. Ah-ha! Finally figuring this out is alone worth the price of the app! All it took was the ability to manipulate the starry sky ;) Beautiful graphics, easy to pan and zoom, locations for galaxies, nebulae... lots of good star gazing ahead!
Best star map, so far
ConnieDodson 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Beautiful. Thank you for manual location input. It's very rural here. There is no GPS on iPod Touch 2G and no Skyhook. Because Star Walk has the whole sky, both above and below the horizon orientation is easy. The way the constellation artwork fades in and out as you move thru the immediate area is excellent. The new "night vision" is useful. And... could we have Pluto. Okay?
Excellent and informative
iPod_user in 94574 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
As an amateur astronomer I use a PC-based sky simulator, pocket guides, and star wheels to see what's up and interesting. This application doesn't replace them but adds tremendous usability and portability (esp. when visiting the Southern hemisphere without any of those tools). It has a beautiful display and the time advance function lets me predict interesting planetary events and eclipses. I would like to see an option to superimpose a celestial coordinate grid on the sky and directional indications in degrees along the horizon. Sky Walk is informative, useful, fun, and beautifully executed. A must-have for anyone who wants to know what's in the sky at any time.
Great app
cmfloyd 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
1. Excellent graphics 2. Timeline feature is awsome 3. Please add the pleides
Very cool
RightyC1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love the time travel. Would it be possible to travel in space as well?
Must Have for Outdoor Lovers
diablo943 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you spend time outdoors enjoying the magic of the night sky, this application is a Must Have! A great interface and innovative look, I am glad I chose Star Walk over the other applications. Get outside and bring your iPhone!
This app + Accelorometer support = World's Perfect Star Map App
CitizenOfColbertNation 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
That would make this worth 100 stars, and more info on each planet/star/stellar body would be nice
EXCELLENT !
adbjmb 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is by far the best application about the cosmos that you can get. I really like how you can just touch any object in the sky and press info and it zooms and gives you all the information that you need about the object. Now with the addition of deep space objects (my favorite) the bar has been set . Great job.
outstanding!
interconnect 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
this app is simply amazing. by far the best $5 I've spent in the app store so far! highly recommended for anyone who likes looking at the stars. keep up the good work developer!!
Update re BEWARE BEFORE PURCHASE comment
literarycharm 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Despite the impressive reviews heretofore, I would urge caution (and investigation by 'The Apple Police'). I purchased this $4.95 app several days ago, and while it lists on my computer among iPhone Apps, it will not load to the phone (despite the usual resets). The provided link for Star Walk support links instead to Vito Technologies, which requires identification of the product, version and a FAQ pre-read which are not included at that site. I'll amend this warning if these problems are dealt with - but for now I would reiterate: BUYER BEWARE.
Great App!!!
Mark108 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this app!! It is a great tool to keep track of what is going on in the sky. It has the planets also. (question: what happened to pluto?) Very intuitive interface and lovely graphic representations. I recently used it to get a visual of the night sky when I was born. Kudos!!
Magnificent! Utterly, completely magnificent.
XanatosUSA 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Update January 4, 2009: Small request, if possible: Ability to bookmark display settings for date, time and object lock (for example, the Dec 1, 2008 conjunction of Venus, Mars and the Moon, with my object-lock on Jupiter). I would love the ability to store links like this for immediate "re-constellation" of interesting celestial events. THANK YOU FOR THIS AWESOME APP!!!!! December 18, 2008: WONDERFUL app update, you gave me everything I was looking for... night mode, messier objects, and it now retains my location setting. Tonight, I saw my first nebula with my 16x binoculars thanks to this app. On December 1 I was out photographing the Venus/Jupiter/Moon conjunction that I found out about a month ahead of because of this app. I am learning star names and locations as I've wanted to since I was a kid. This is the best app I own (and I own 88 so far -only 2 of which are games!) Thank you for a truly life-enriching app!
Problematic Locations on iPod Touch
Bozocity 3.0 stars Version: 1.5
The flashiest astronomy app is weak on substance. Biggest liability is unclear images of the sky coupled with inadequate field of view. Rather than use a database of stars to plot locations, Star Walk appears to rely on a giant photograph of the sky with an antialiasing technique to adjust hiding of dimmer stars. Very little information on objects and weak search. Best feature is automatic rendering of various labels and cartoons depending on current zoom, minimizing need to learn or use controls on a small screen. Not suitable for iPod Touch. Designed solely for iPhone. Upon startup *every time* annoyingly requests for location services to be turned on, which iPod Touch can not use. (Despite the needless, nasty response from Nuinchrist, who, from his name, should know better, the fact is that location services do not always work over WiFi. Depends on the router and the ISP. Never works over the ISP in my rural area. Also, on iPod Touch, location services *never* work when out of range of WiFi, so this defect in Star Walk's programming must be fixed.) Does not allow location to be determined by address, Zip code, or even by manually entering (and saving) latitude and longitude. Allows only selecting from a limited and flawed list of cities. There are two entries for "Portland, USA," but no indication of which is "Portland, Maine, USA," and which is "Portland, Oregon, USA," so which does one choose? States must be included in the United States, and likely provinces abroad. It should allow selecting a city from this list to override the "Location Services" message at startup! Some of the constellation lines and cartoons need to be fixed. The lines for Geminii, for example, should look like twins, not like a box with a line off it. Some of the cartoons are superimposed over their stars with no clear relationship between the two. The snake in the cartoon for the Serpent Bearer clearly does not follow the line of stars. Planets behave improperly when advancing the time, rotaing in the plane of the screen rather that each about its proper axis. Saturn is a glaring example because of its rings. I originally did not buy this app because it did not allow hiding dim stars, but that's now fixed. Would be better to allow the time slider optionally to track an object. Currently it tracks a position in the sky, so you what you want to see scrolls out of view.
This is the best (and most fun) Astronomy app for the iPhone.
Hounshell 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
This is also the first review I have ever written for any iPhone application. And I have a lot of premium apps.
Great star app (with some patience)
RJK5 3.0 stars Version: 2.1
Wonderful, detailed and just plain cool app for the astro enthusiast, without a steep learning curve. However, it keeps going back to north on its own (this is where the patience comes in). I'll give it all 5 stars when this glitch is fixed, otherwise it's too annoying to use for more than a couple minutes at a time.
Problematic Locations on iPod Touch
Bozocity 2.0 stars Version: 3.0
3.0 Downgrade worsens Star Walk's problems. With Location Services off, often freezes upon trying to set a new location manually on the slick new Earth screen. Keeps looking for an automatic location that is not there. <><><><><> Prior Review: The flashiest astronomy app is weak on substance. Beautiful app
Ikeman1 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is a gorgeous app, only 2 requests, a " dim" feature that would let you adjust the presence of objects in the sky relative to your light environment, the new night feature doesn't feel right, best to eliminate objects in the sky by their magnitud. The other complaint is once you select an object, there is no way to deselect it, you have to select another one
