Star Walk and Solar Walk apps now track the Space X Dragon
Calendar16 Thu, 24 May 2012 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
The two bestselling astronomy apps, Star Walk and Solar Walk for iOS, can now find and track the Space X Dragon, the first commercial vehicle to visit the International Space Station. The Dragon was launched Tuesday. When you search for the spacecraft, you'll see it's current position. As I write this, it's in orbit next to the ISS. Using the augmented-reality feature, you likely can find the Dragon when it is in a good position overhead. I didn't try to find Dragon in the night sky, but it was easy to find on my iPhone. I could use the search command to find by name, or I could look on the last 30-day launches list. It appears centered on the screen in the correct orientation to the ISS and the star background. You also can get some specifics on the Dragon position and a bit of history. Use AirPlay mirroring and Read More

The highly rated astronomy iPad apps from Vito Technology have updates that allow them to display the heavens and our solar system in dazzling high definition for owners of the new iPad. Star Walk (US $4.99) is a fully animated guide to the night sky with a database of more than 20,000 objects. With the Retina display update, everything from details to the amount of items displayed on-screen at once is dramatically increased. Solar Walk (US $2.99) is an interactive 3D model of the Solar System. Using your fingers on the iPad screen you can explore the surfaces of planets, change your position to create your own eclipses, and even see man-made satellites orbiting our earth. Apple showcases apps ready for the retina iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Mar 2012 16:15:32 UTC +00:00
Apple wants you to enjoy that brand new retina iPad and has compiled a list of apps that are ready for the high-resolution display. It includes many of the big-name apps that were quick to get their app updated after Apple’s iPad announcement last week. The list includes entertainment apps, productivity apps, games, and more. Kelly spent the last three years covering mobile technology at places like BGR, Gizmodo and The Unofficial Apple Weblog. Before writing, she spent a few years working with and teaching others how to use Adobe Flash and Macromedia Director. Even earlier than that, she spent six years working on her Ph.D in Microbiology. When she's not writing, she can be found fishing the lakes and hiking the mountains of Western Maine with her husband and children. Read More
The Retina display on the new iPad, available Friday, is absolutely stunning. However, the increase in resolution actually makes some older apps appear all pixelated and gross. You don’t want to show off your brand new iPad and leave your friends with the impression that the screen on your new tablet is any less clear than a shimmering pool of unicorn tears. Here are several iPad apps that have been updated with Retina-ready graphics so everyone within eyesight can witness the pixel-pushing power of your new Apple tablet. Besides the titles that were featured in the iPad introduction event, Apple has setup a new section on the iTunes App Store to highlight Retina-ready titles. I’ve handpicked a few titles from this list and from other updates I’m aware of for you to try out. Keep in mind, this list is not comprehensive and there should be new Retina-optimized apps coming to the Read More

Calendar16 Fri, 16 Mar 2012 13:45:00 UTC +00:00
It's iPad day and many of you are looking for the best Retina-capable apps to install on your new Apple tablet. Apple's got you covered with a section of the iTunes app store dedicated to apps updated to support the iPad's new retina display. Apple's list will get you started, but it isn't exhaustive and only includes major apps like Tweetbot and Evernote. There are many other retina-ready apps that are not being showcased by Apple. We won't be able to list every single retina app in the App Store, but we will cover some of our favorites below. If there are any that we have missed, please let us know in the comments! How To Plan the Nerdiest Camping Trip Ever
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Jun 2011 22:00:41 UTC +00:00
Posted 06/23/2011 at 2:00pm | by Susie Ochs Some people venture into the outdoors to “unplug.” To leave technology behind…to stop and smell the roses, if you will. And if that’s your thing, that’s great. But some of us are allergic to roses and break out in hives if you try to pry our gadgets out of our hands for a minute, let alone for a whole weekend in the woods. That said, we’re not suggesting that you bring an iMac camping, and thanks to the power of iPhones and iPads, even toting a MacBook Air seems like overkill. With the right case, some portable power, and some other goodies, you and your iDevice along can have a blast in the great outdoors. i3D Brings Stunning Sans-Glasses 3D to iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 24 May 2011 16:33:57 UTC +00:00
Posted 05/24/2011 at 8:33am | by Andrew Groen The iPad 2 is an amazing device capable of all sorts of wonderous feats, but it just doesn't have the awesome 3D whizzbang gadgetry of some other new devices. i3D is hoping to change that with a new 3D app that brings glasses-free 3D to the iPad. We can't wait for this software to be licensed and used in actual apps. If you haven't seen - or don't remember - the video from last month then you can check it out below. Suffice to say that it's very exciting stuff for iOS gaming and just about any app you can imagine. From Star Walk to Angry Birds , there aren't many apps in the App Store that wouldn't benefit from a little 3D tossed in for fun. Now i3D has released the software as a free download for all iPad 2 owners to Read More
Twenty Apps You Need for Your New iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Dec 2010 17:46:34 UTC +00:00
Yesterday we suggested twenty apps to download for your new iPhone, but what if you received an iPad for Christmas?  You’ll be needing this list, than!  Here are twenty recommended iPad apps and although there are some repeat apps from the iPhone list, there are plenty of new suggestions too. As before, the first ten should be considered ‘must-haves’, while the second ten depend more on what you want to do with your iPad.  Here we go: For All Users: A Little More Specific: That’s it!  We hope these inspire you to explore what your new iPad can do, as there are so many great apps available.  Don’t forget, there are many alternatives to the ones we’ve mentioned, so don’t be afraid to search the App Store. Also, if you existing iPad owners have a favorite app that you’d recommend for new owners, tell us about it in the comments! Read More

StarWalk for iPad is Astronomical
Calendar16 Wed, 22 Dec 2010 20:13:57 UTC +00:00
12.22.10        App Score: 10/10    StarWalk for iPad immerses you in the Solar System. It turns an iPad into a virtual window that reveals constellations and other celestial bodies in real-time. Pinch-to-zoom elegantly focuses in on stars, planets, shooting stars or deep space. The sky is truly alive, as the daylight matches actual time and shooting stars and comets sweep through the galaxy. Hold the iPad overhead and slowly pan through the sky to see what it reveals. StarWalk for iPad also literally travels through time. You can scroll through a timeline that moves into the future or the past, revealing the astronomical conditions at that moment. Constellations are illuminated with subtle illustrations. Either view the sky around you by moving around the iPad, or zoom in on specific elements by scrolling, panning and zooming. These features alone would make StarWalk a desirable download. However, StarWalk for iPad is packed with so Read More
New ‘iPad is Delicious’ Ad and Featured Apps
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Aug 2010 13:10:59 UTC +00:00
Although we don’t suggest crunching down on a corner of your iPad to check whether Apple’s statement is correct, according to their latest TV advert, the iPad is delicious, playful, productive and a whole lot of other things too.  Rather than using a voiceover to describe what the iPad can do, this ad relies on demonstration instead. The image of hands interacting with the iPad is a strong one, and certainly brings the control system to the forefront, while the chosen apps appeal to a broad range of tastes and ages. Here are the apps featured in the ad: These are all great apps certainly, but aside from Safari that’s used to demonstrate Twitter, and Flipboard, new iPad owners are going to have to splash out for the rest of them, which isn’t very clear in the advert and could prove somewhat disappointing to the new buyer.  Or does everyone pretty Read More

We met up with both After release, they'll be adding information to Geo Walk in various updates, and Toporkov says the company will listen very closely to the community, adding in suggested information about local landmarks or history when possible. They'd also like to eventually add sounds and videos to the map, rather than just browsing around text points on the globe as you can now. Toporkov says that with Geo Walk, the company is hoping to show customers that they're not just an astronomy company -- while both of their apps so far have focused on space, what they really want to do is just make entertaining educational apps, whatever the subject. I asked the developers about iPhone 4, and they said that they'd be working as hard as possible to make sure all of their current apps were updated for the new handset, as well as staying backwards-compatible with Read More

Apple Design Awards go to popular iPhone and iPad apps

Jun 9th 2010 at 7:00AM Was there a reason Apple didn't really give any "Face Time" to Mac apps this WWDC. I feel a little sad that Mac seemed to get snubbed. I would run out right now and buy an iPad if the TabToolkit allowed you to enter Notation/Tab rather then just being a viewer/playback app. Still a great app though. Mike, maybe you could recommend some of these awesome really out-of-the-way apps that we don't know about? I try every day, my friend. Fair enough Where is the award for Angry Birds? "Apple definitely didn't dig too deep to find really out-of-the-way titles." Read More

Choose a clear night and hold your phone skyward, and the heavens suddenly make sense — that is, with the help of a stargazing application. If ever there were a type of mobile software guaranteed to elicit a grin, this is it. These apps — like Starmap, Star Walk, Pocket Universe, Google Sky Map and others — are part of a category known as “augmented reality.” The idea is to point a mobile device toward an object and let an app show you more about what you’re seeing than your own eyes could. At the moment, the category is in its nascent stages, with one exception — the stargazing apps. As for which app you should buy, it depends on your level of astronomical expertise, and what device you have. Pocket Universe ($3) and Star Walk ($3) offer great experiences for beginners with an iPhone. Google Sky Map (free) will do Read More

Presumed to be the best
TallyHoHoHo 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
I bought this and several other astronomy apps for the iPhone, and Star Walk was by far the best one. I'm buying this even tho my iPad doesn't arrive for 2 more days, but I'm confident that this will be awesome, and at $3 I figured I should grab it now before they wise up and charge a realistic price.
Beautiful. Incredible. Unbelievable!
Kovanen 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
Hold the iPad up to the sky and see the stars in that position. Pan the iPad across the sky and see the stars enter the iPad and display their names and other information. It seems like magic, it is hard to believe it is possible. The aesthetics of this app are of the very highest caliber. It's a top notch application that will impress and educate.
Unbelievable!!!
Fortune and Glory 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
You hold the iPad up to the night sky and it tracks all the stars on the screen. Coolest damn thing I've ever seen!!!
Nice update
Luxamar 5.0 stars Version: 4.1
It's nice to see a developer listening to reviewers and adding features that we request! We asked for the option to disable sound and music separately, and in a matter of a few days, here it is. However, we still cannot listen to our own music. iPod music shuts off when StarWalk comes up, even if its music is disabled. But I'm sure the devs will fix that, as long as it isn't an OS limitation. Thanks!
A beautiful planetarium software package updated for iPad
Nomorestars 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
I have used the iPhone version for quick location of night sky objects since it first came out. I was looking forward to see what you can do with a larger screen on the iPad. I've not had a huge amount of time to go through every feature but at first glance this is an excellent update. THe larger screen combined with the touch interface and this apps use of it are just as intuitive as the iPhone version, it's just that much more cool to play in.
Love it, but...
DJB1965 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
I absolutely love this app, but can we please have a setting to turn *just* the music off? I like the other sounds, but the only option is to turn off all sounds, when I just want to kill the music.
Nice...
Aeolian75 4.0 stars Version: 4.0
It's beautiful, but it will not let you listen to your music while you look at it. Even if you turn the sound off in the app. I haven't tried yet, but hopefully it saves your last location for when you're away from WiFi...
Stunning beyond words!
Kriswatt 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
This is everything I ever wanted but never thought would exist in my lifetime. I am fascinated by the stars and I always wanted to get one of those little star charts, but I didn't think I could figure it out. This does it for you in the most beautiful way. I went out tonight and discovered that we can actually see more planets than I thought! Totally worth the price.
Amazin Application
Palos Verdes 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
This is a great app for the iPad and one of the first we purchased. It brings the sky to life. Simply hold it up and it detects your location direction and angle to display and label what you see above you (and even below the horizon if you coudl see through the earth). In a few seconds, my 12 year old son identified three planets and a few constellations. So easy to use - well worth the $5. Nicely done by the developer.
Like the iPhone version but bigger and crisper!
CaptainWebby 5.0 stars Version: 4.1
I bought this version right before going to an astronomy open house and my university and it stole the show! I love being able to find out more information about what they were showing us through the telescopes and to be able to see what other astronomical features were around it. $4.99 is a great price but since there weren't any major changes from the iPhone version it would have been nice to get the iPad version as an upgrade.
Looking forward
ThayerHealey3 5.0 stars Version: 4.1
I just bought my son a telescope so am looking forward to using this to help him to locate exactly what he is searching for.
The reason to buy an iPad
Barn Swallow 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
This is the most amazing app!!! If the iPad could do nothing but run this app, it would be worth the 500 bucks. The most fun I ever had at night. (well... almost)
Great app
TallyHoHoHo 4.0 stars Version: 4.0
My only beef is the limited database - just Messier objects. I wish it had a NGC catalog. several bugs that I'm sure will be fixed soon.
AMAZING!
Rambo for Music 5.0 stars Version: 4.1
This app has officially won me over for the best app for stargazers out there. This is the one thing that won me over to buying an iPad. My people were amazed when they would hold it to the sky and it would follow the sky with them. Plus I could find basic galaxies, nebulas, with my basic telescope just by using this app. Awesome job!!!!!!!
Beautiful!
DM36 5.0 stars Version: 4.1
I bought into the hype and Im glad I did. This is such a beautifully designed app and the interface is breathtaking. Can't wait to travel with it this summer.
Wow
Spstepp 5.0 stars Version: 4.1
I'd give this app six stars if I could. Absolutely beautiful! I'm glad to have bought it for $4.99, could easily sell for twice that or more.
This is a technology leap for the masses!
Steveo Hero 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
Incredible app. Very sensitive to movement; yet to try it out in the dark (of course the IPad will work in the dark - just need to see if it lines up ok). If you want something jaw dropping - get this and XE (element guide) - these are the future of apps.
Best Application
Kobojice 5.0 stars Version: 4.0
This app is amazing. I walked outside with my wife used the ipad, pointed at the sky and spent the next few hours exploring the stars. This app shows you exactly the stars as relation to where you are holding the ipad. It gives you the ability to zoom in on a particular star, universe, cluster etc. and gives you a explanation of the given point. This is a must for nature lovers or anyone interested in the bigger picture. Get It. You will not regret it.
