Kotaku is reporting that after the end of March, the augmented reality shooter Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner [$2.99] will be pulled from the App Store. We took a look at this title when it was announced in early November, with its release coming just a couple of weeks later. The game allows you to point the camera of your iOS device towards anything to serve as the backdrop for an intense shootout with Imperial ships as you man the gunner turret on the Millennium Falcon. The game is published by THQ Wireless, but was developed by a small studio called Vertigore. Josh Shabtai, Falcon Gunner’s creative director and head of Vertigore, recently wrote in a blog post that due to THQ’s deal with the owners of everything Star Wars Lucasfilm coming to an end, THQ will not be able to allow Star Wars: Falcon Gunner to be sold in the Read More
7 Star Wars Games on iOS Worth Checking Out
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Dec 2010 13:56:59 UTC +00:00
Star Wars games are abundant, and that's an understatement. That said, they are also very popular on iOS devices like the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. Developers like THQ Wireless seem to have the license on Star Wars games for iOS, as most games that carry the Star Wars name are THQ's work. Ngmoco, Inc. did develop Imperial Academy, however, which also happens to be free (Nice!).  Have a look at some Star Wars games for iOS that are worth checking out:   1) Star Wars: Imperial Academy The game's description says "Darth Vader wants you for his Imperial Academy" and puts you in four player death matches against other storm troopers. Interesting that the empire would put anyone through this kind of competition before joining the academy. Anyone who watched the Star Wars movies knows that Storm Troopers can't aim worth a damn. Free  2) Star Wars: Lightsaber Duel Read More
Coming soon: Lightsaber duels on the iPhone
Calendar16 Sat, 20 Mar 2010 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Do you need a weapon that's not as clumsy or random as a blaster, or perhaps, an elegant weapon from a more civilized age? Soon, there will be an app for that. THQ Wireless, the maker of several Star Wars-themed iPhone apps including The Force Unleashed and Star Wars: Trench Run, will release a new app called Lightsaber Duel early in April. Overall, the app sounds similar to another app called Lightsaber Unleashed, which allows you to swing your iPhone around and make " " noises come out of the speaker. Lightsaber Duel will expand on that idea. Rather than merely going all Star Wars Kid with your iPhone, you'll actually be able to engage in duels with your fellow wannabe Jedi or Sith via a Bluetooth connection with their iPhone. You'll also be able to play music during the duel. However, we're not yet sure if that means only music Read More

It's time to head off to the nearest Coinstar machine to turn the treasures lost to your couch cushions in to iTunes credit, as this week has some sales you likely won't want to miss. As usual, all of these prices are current as of this posting and because of the nature of App Store price fluctuations it's usually not a good idea to wait very long if any of these games interest you. The star of the show this week is Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, a game that we not only loved in our review but also awarded 5 stars in our January "Best iPhone Games" round up. For a limited time to celebrate the Chinese new year, Chinatown Wars will be available for $6.99, down from its original $9.99. If you haven't bought this game yet, this is a sale you won't want to miss. There are also Read More
February 11th, 2010 James Isabel Seeing this game released about 1.5 years ago, this pricedrop was bound to happen eventually. THQ Wireless created an ambitious iPhone version of their best selling console game Star Wars The Force Unleashed, and today, you can get it for just $0.99! You are Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, trained by the menacing Sith Lord to hunt down the last of the Jedi. Unleash a barrage of Force Powers at the flick of your fingers tap, touch, and swipe your way through enemies! The game has received both good and bad reviews because of THQ’s decision to make the control fully touch/swipe/flick controlled instead of applying a move + shoot/attack method we see Gameloft use often. Thankfully, there is a FREE version you can try and then decide from there if your ever so valuable DOLLAR will be put to good use. Don’t know how long the Read More

Reviews

Disappointing
aimfire 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Come on, folks... I know it's awesome to have a Star Wars game on iPhone, but this is really just a mediocre game with a SW wrapper on it. :-(
HUGE head on Darth Vader!
Fafner 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
I'm enjoying this game so far! This is exactly what on the go gaming should be like.
Rip off!
dohmax 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Too short! I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, but I played through the whole thing in about an hour and a half. While the motion controls were fun, I can't recommend that anyone spend $10 on this title while there are really cool games out there with many hours of gameplay for much cheaper or free. I want my money back. By the way, this is the first comment/ review I've left on iTunes. I just felt I should say something while the game was new so more people don't waste their money.
Not great.
PKND89 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
I seem to be in a minority here. I think the graphics are horribly pixelated, slow frame rate, and all you really do is trace symbols on the screen. Pretty lame overall, and a complete rip off at $9.99. I was looking forward to this since the preview, and bought it right away. Never again. I'll always wait for the video and reviews on Touch Arcade from now on.
Fun Game, but a mixed bag
Triumphant_Anch 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
I really enjoyed playing this game, but there are pros and cons. I'm going to list them in the hope that developers, like Lucas Arts, will take them to heart.
WOW; period
KalebKid 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
This was what I was thinking the whole time playing. Challenging yet not frustrating. The character graphic quality is equal to that of a game on the PSP. The environmental graphics are outstanding though. There are many addicting games available but this game will be the one you lose track of time with.
its star wars
bas.life 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
...just bought the game and I can say its enjoyable. As others say, its a must have for all the Star Wars fans. The action can be fast paced, and the intro tutorial does a good job with the controls. I was hoping the graphics could be a little more crisp and cleaner, but its not a big complaint- I'm content. You should not delay, be one with the Force.
Good game, too short for 10 bucks, but replayable
HaHaRich! 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
I'm not a gamer, but I finished this in 2 hours. The graphics were a little jaggy for what the iPhone has shown it's self capable of. The interface was fun, and it's a good Star Wars game (although, I would have appreciated a voice cast--after the intro, there's no audio dialogue, besides the occasional stormtrooper scream).
Funnest iPod game I’ve played so far
Guillermo Esteves 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
It’s a simple game: The Apprentice moves, you draw gestures with your finger on the screen to activate Lightsaber moves and Force powers, dispatch Stormtroopers and Jedi, then you move on to the next area and do it all over again. It’s simple, but it’s an elegant and intuitive interface; and the game is really fun and totally worth the $9.99. Get it now.
It's pretty good but...
L'Alba dei Morti 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Speaking as someone who has actually bought the game before posting a comment on it, I can say that the game does look pretty decent for a mobile game (think PS1 type graphics), the control mechanics are great, the sound on the other hand could be a bit better.. Sound effects sound a little weak, and the soundtrack is made up of really bad MIDI tunes..
Come on people...
hawkmankt 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
I was wondering if the naysayers here realize that this is (even though the count is somewhere at about 833 right now) one of the first games by a major developer on here. "The graphics are horribly pixelated..." ""It's just a game of tracing symbols..." I just wonder what exactly you thought you were getting for $10. Personally I am pleased.
Great Game
Thor79 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
If you don't mind that it's entirely based on gestures and 1 screen fights...it's an excellent game. Graphics are good for the iPhone IMO. Framerate is alittle slow in parts but nothing too bad. Overall I love it.
Worth The Money, Awesome!!!
plokoon360 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
This a great app! Graphics are okay considering it's the iPhone. Great use of touchscreen which can be used portrait or landscape. The music is the only complaint because it is cheap MIDI music. The iPhone can handle much better. Overall great app and worth every penny. Beware of lengthy beginning dialogues;)
:/
Tim Shundo 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Ok game, horrible framerate. Feels like 10 fps, even when there is almost nothing on the screen. The iPhone and iPod touch won't be considered viable competition to today's handhelds until it can reach at least 30fps. If the DS can do 30, so should the iPhone.
The Force is strong with this one!
Mike the Knife 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
I'm a big Star Wars fan, so I was already looking forward to this game for my Wii. Then I saw they had an iPhone version. Wow ... wow ... wow! This is the best game yet for the iPhone, and that's saying something. The force controls are innovative, the graphics are awesome, and the story is just what I'd hoped for. This game really shows the potential of the iPhone to be THE mobile gaming platform. My hats off to the developers.
BEST APP BY FARR !!
adbjmb 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
This is the absolute best application by farr ever released for the iphone . They have outdone themselves with this one. People will go nuts for this one and will be the number one app for a long time . The game play is terrific , the force powers are incredible and it is very hard to put down. enjoy this game , great job THQ great job.
Wow!!
scion156 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Man I love this game!! I love star wars! Definitely get my respect on this game! Worth every little penny I have in my pocket!
Great Game !
Rocket MINI 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
You are limited to certain moves, but it is very entertaining! Great Job THQ!
force slightly unleashed
claytoniss 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Game is worth $5 not ten. Its an interesting take and fun to do combos with multi gesture. Learning curve that is set up for the game for game play is a little to easy to control. Puzzles can be a little easy because they give ridiculous hints. Game is short and slightly repetative. Still fun though.
Lord Vader says: "Impressive"
2kittens1cup 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
This game reminds me of the great old Pc adventure games, because there is no audio dialogue. Its just music and text. Oh wait that sounds boring you say? Well the gameplay is fantastic. I am very impressed with how THQ has managed to come up with a gesture based game. The visuals seriously do remind me of the great epic pc adventure games back in the sierra/lucas arts days. Its got a really good feel. I cant say anything bad about this... YET, because while graphically the xbox360 version looked great... it was boring. This is actually a different game thanks to the gesture gameplay. This is how you do it folks. Dont miss it.
Can an app store game be better than a game console release?
Nullifie 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
I think so, this game is definitly much better than the console release. At least I have fun doing gestures here while the console release gets frustrating and boring after awhile. This is one of the better games on the iphone/ipod touch at the moment, with superb graphics and touch input. I just love using gestures to do my Jedi/Sith force mayhem.
Entertaining but not OpenGL
YoMaster 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Why not use OpenGL?! Come on that's just lazy. Other than that this game is really fun! Some people think it's boring, but there ate enough forces to learn that it makes the gameplay pretty open. Good game, should be $4.99 though. Real Soccer 09, now THAT is a game that's worth every penny of the $9.99 asking price!!
Are you kidding?
Gtalk ira 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Took me twenty mn to finish it up! Too short, too repetitive and way, way too expensive. You guys should be ashamed of that scam!
I was waiting for it since June!
DuffmanTM 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Awesome game! That what I was waiting for!Actially, I'm not the true fan of Star Wars, but I really like it.The graphics is well, gameplay is innovative and interesting.;)
AWESOME PHONE GAME!! Short portable game system game.
amutti 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Paraphrasing others, this game is just hard enough and just long enough to be enjoyable the way phone games are meant to be enjoyed -- not in long gaming sessions but in short spurts, like while in line or waiting for an oil change. Unlike Monkey Ball (which I feel is too difficult for a casual gamer) you feel like you're progressing through the game every time you pick it up. And yes, you'll be disappointed when it is over, but you'll have had a lot of fun and not at the expense of a lot of frustration. If you're looking for a DS game -- this isn't it. It is much shorter than most DS games and it can become a bit repetitious if you sit and try to play it in one long session. On the hardest setting I beat it in about 3-3.5 hours and I'm not a gamer But unlike a DS game it only costs $9.99!!!!
