Daily iPad App: Stuck on Earth

Stuck on Earth is one of those 'really good ideas' that only seems obvious after you've seen it and spent some time with this free app. It's designed for travelers and especially photographers. Move a map to any place on earth, and as you zoom in you will begin to see photographs taken at those locations. The photos come from Flickr and other sources, and the developers check those images by looking for embedded GPS coordinates so the photos appear at the right place on the map. Many of the photos have comments, and you can get directions to any of the locations from directly inside the app. It's a great way to explore things that are near you that you've never seen, but also it's a really useful resource when you're on the road. If you plan for a future trip, you can save the locations and photos on your Read More
Trey Ratcliff is best known for his widely renowned photography work; his blog Stuck in Customs is massively popular (every day the site’s photos receive more than 150,000 views) and the HDR (high dynamic range) photo techniques he helped to popularize are now practically ubiquitous. Ratcliff is now setting his sights on disrupting a closely related but very separate space: Travel guides. And he’s just unveiled a gorgeous new iPad app called Stuck on Earth to do it. Screenshot of Stuck on Earth (click to enlarge) “I spend my life traveling and finding places and taking photos, and I have cobbled together five or six different tools from the web and apps to research my trips, but I’ve still never found the best way to find places to go when building an itinerary,” the Austin, Texas-based Ratcliff told me in a phone interview Tuesday evening. “I built this app for myself. The app I've been waiting for!!!

I LOVE THIS APP!!! It's gorgeous, absolutely genius and THE TRAVEL APP OF MY DREAMS! So often I've gone to super fabulous places... but of course with never enough time to see and do it all... much less photograph! Ever try research "cool places to shoot photos" in XYZ city? Dismal experience. This app cuts to the chase in ways that nothing else out there does. You can enjoy gorgeous photography, while finding great spots to shoot... then make you OWN trip, not some tour guide's idea of one (which saves to the iPad and isn't internet dependent... thank goodness!) When you're at your destination as either an exact template - or as a general guide, then follow inspiration from there. I've learned of some new photographers to follow (which you can also do from the app)... and just can't believe how it seems to include everything I need to streamline what little time I have to enjoy a new place. My shoot-to-scouting ratio has shifted now to WAY more time with my camera, way less time wandering around with the clock ticking. Hats off to Trey Ratcliff for coming up with such an elegant app with such incredible functionality. Call me enthused!

Simple idea… images on a map. But perfectly and elegantly delivered. Kudos.
A Wonderful Photo Exploration App

Trey and the Stuck in Customs team have outdone themselves here. In a very stylistic app, they've been able to combine great photo inspiration as well as the ability to have a photo scouting app in one package. Make sure you check out the My Trips and the "Top" lists as these are going to take this app right over. Absolutely love it. -RCDtown TV host
Aesthetically pleasing as well as useful

Seriously, I did not think it was possible to have an app that looks this good AND is so useful. You don't even have to be looking to travel to other countries ... I found dozens of spots within 5 minutes of my house that I didn't even know about. The app is quick and responsive and has enough depth that you can explore for hours, but it's just simple enough to not be overwhelming.
Help!

I know it will be a 4, but....I just downloaded and can't get in. It's stuck after what's your name. The keyboard doesn't come up.

ALready very useful app. So an app that looks good and is useful, plus it's free. I know I'm going to get a lot of use out of this, Might actually have to turn the 3g on my iPad.
