The Great Electronic Arts 99¢ Sale of 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 16 Dec 2010 12:23:29 UTC +00:00
It seems like whenever a holiday rolls around in the US, all of the major developers put their catalog of iOS games on sale in an effort to ride a wave of publicity into the top app charts. Electronic Arts is no stranger to this practice, and in observance of a very special holiday this Winter they have dropped a huge number of their games down to 99¢. Yes, that's right, EA is having a sale to celebrate forum moderator ImNoSuperMan's birthday. Just kidding. It's a Christmas sale. Or rather, a "Holiday" sale. Whatever the politically correct reason for this event is, the bottom line is that you can get a ton of EA games for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad for just a dollar each right now. (Note that some of these titles actually launched at 99¢, or have been that price for a while, but have been added to Read More
Daily Double: TEN Sales from EA, Cheese Collect for Free
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Dec 2009 00:35:09 UTC +00:00
December 16th brings a major upset to our Daily Double as EA Games has issued an extended sale of ten games until Xmas! Meanwhile, the Appvent Calender chugs along with today's offering, Cheese Collect. Well, well, well. Apparently EA Games doesn’t want to put some of their top-selling titles like Tetris, Sims 3, and Scrabble on sale, because they’ve changed the terms of the 25 Days ‘Til Xmas Sale. Instead of offering a new game for sale each day, ten games will be on sale for the remainder of the holiday season. These are mostly ones that we’ve seen before. Here’s the full list, with brief descriptions: Spore Origins Spore Origins is based around the first stage of the Spore PC game, in which you play a tiny creature (your “Spore”) and must swim around the “primordial ooze,” avoiding larger creatures while devouring smaller ones. As you eat, you’ll eventually evolve, Read More
Is it a Christmas miracle?  A simple mistake?  Who knows, but if my eyes aren’t mistaken, EA has actually drop the price of nine different games today for their 25 Games ‘Til Xmas promotion.  This is the first time that EA has featured more than two games for their Christmas promotion, so gobble them up while you can. The games are: Assuming EA is still following their own rules, these games will only be on sale for a single day, although Sudoku was on sale yesterday for $.99.  Maybe they are just trying to get as many games in as they can before the sale ends on December 22nd? December 15th comes with two freebies and a decent sale from EA Games. We continue our Daily Double article with another bonus freebie in addition to the Appvent Calender. While the Appvent Calender is offering Balcassa, a slider puzzle-Rubik’s Cube combo, Gogogic has just released their multiplayer game Soft Freak Fiesta, and it’s only free for today! Not to be left out, EA Games is throwing us a familiar puzzle game, Sudoku, for the rock-bottom price of a buck. Sudoku Oh, Sudoku, the puzzle that took my school system by storm. I think I’ve seen enough of these boxes to last me a lifetime, thank you very much, but if you’re a fan of the games, EA’s version is sure to delight. While it might be one of the older apps in the store, it retains all of the graphical glitz of all of EA’s apps. Unfortunately for speed-demon serious players, Read More

EA Mobile has decided to get in on some of this Thanksgiving sale action by having a sale of their own.  This isn’t just any old sale, however, this is a massive game feast sale.  EA Mobile has marked down 30 iPhone and iPod touch games by up to 50%. Some of the titles listed below are still relatively new, which means that they have been marked down to their lowest prices ever, while some can just be considered great deals.  You should have no problem finding at least one title worth downloading, if not a handful. The game feast sale begins today and ends on November 29th, so don’t delay, download today! Read More

Reviews

Nice game play but some annoyances.
Groovy Amusement 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
The reason I picked EA's Sudoku instead of the 14 other Sudokus on the App Store was because I was banking on an experienced game developer. But it seems my faith was misplaced. Game play in Sudoku by EA is well done, but the overall implementation has some major annoyances.
Nice gameplay, but annoying startup
Brian Enigma 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
The good news: I have tried several different iPhone Sudoku clones and when it comes down to gameplay, the EA version is hands-down the best experience around. You can get what you want done with minimal clicking. The other sudoku games often make me feel like the UI is getting in the way (I'm used to pen-and-paper sudoku), and EA's feels more natural.
Great Gameplay - But No Music :-(
RockBandit 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
After playing EA's Sudoku on the iPod for the past year and greatly enjoying it, I figured the iPhone version was a no-brainer. While the game maintains the same gameplay and interface (very slick!), the iPhone version has one major annoyance: You cannot listen to your own music while playing the game!
Fatal flaw
bushmaster 6 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
I bought this after enjoying the scroll wheel version on my ipod nano. The iphone version is similar, but the touchscreen interface makes it much easier to input numbers. However, the 1.0 version does not seem to allow playing music in the background. Since I normally listen to podcasts or music while playing, this is a serious problem for me. Otherwise, the game itself is great. I hope the music issue is fixed in an update soon.
needs a LOT of work
barryp13 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
I have the sound off, but the game INSISTS on playing very VERY VERY VERY ANNOYING sound. I canNOT play this in a quiet space because of the ANNOYING sound that I have TURNED OFF in the preferences. Also, When I click on a number, many times the game selects the adjacent number. This game might be OK if it were free, but I feel ripped off having payed for it.
Make us happier, please! Fix this and give buyers a free update.
bigbadwolf314 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
Like another reviewer said, the game's intro music is too darn loud and we also should be able to skip the intro. A work around for the high volume is you can set the max volume for your iPod / iPhone (?) to the halfway point. But we shoudn't have to deal with it. Another annoyance is yes it is too easy to hit the wrong number and get penalized for it. It seems like the interface for this game wasn't really tested too well before hitting the market. Even the Main Menu has a slider that doesn't work like it should - it only shows you if you are at the top of the menu options or at the bottom. Want to go up or down you have to slide your finger over the menu options. Otherwise this game is well done especially on iPod Touch ( I don't own an iPhone - yet ).
GREAT Sudoku game, except...
Paul J in So Cal 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
Great Sudoku game. Nearly identical port from iPod game, except one BIG thing. Big to me that is... You cannot listen to your music while playing this game like you can in the iPod game. I have logged an embarrasing number of hours on the iPod game all the while enjoying my favorite music. This version does not give you that option. While the music included is compelling, I cannot forsee playing ths version over the iPod version for that single reason. Bummer. I don't know if this is a limitation of the phone or the game, but in any case you cannot do both. Hope you don't get tired of the included soundtrack!
No highlight mode
Joe from MN 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
The graphics and animations are pretty. Unfortunately, it lacks a highlight mode where you can select a number and it will show you all the possible squares where that number can go. Also, if you use pencil marks, you need to manually refresh them each time you fill in another square.
incredible Sudoku game
Coloursound 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.24
I think EA has done a bang up job with their apps for the ipod touch. I own all 4 and anxiously await the release of Yahtzee and Monopoly.
Great interface!
Valley Video 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
Lots of fun to use thanks to an easy to learn UI. I've had a couple of crashes but I'll trust that a more stable update is in the works.
Really good; one small issue
infectbda 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
I purchased two different Sudoku apps for my iPod, and this one is by far the better of the two. The presentation is really great, the UI is slick and the font is easy to read. The only minor complaint I have about the app is that you can't listen to music on the iPod and play at the same time, even if you mute the in-game audio. Hopefully this will be addressed in a future update. Overall, worth the money for sure.
Highly recommended!
kanazawee 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
Great effects, graphics, audio, annotation-ability, highliting-ability, and array of puzzles. Start up music isn't muted even when you switch your iPhone to Mute - beware during board meetings. Doesn't let you reset a puzzle if you make a mistake, sometimes it's easier to start over fresh than try to find your mistake.
Works as expected
Kayakin3d 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
A great app that's a tad overpriced compared to the competitive Sudoku. It's a little annoying when you complete a box or line - it runs an animation and takes you out of the game.
Solid Piece of Code! Worth the Money
JPSJPS 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
Worth every penny I spent. Graphics are great (although I wish you could bypass all of the EA graphics at startup). Interface is easy to use and intuitive. I have purchased less expensive Sudoku puzzles but this one is the best value.
Upgrade is buggy
chaz236 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.18
I've just upgraded to the latest version, which appears to be buggy. If I pick a new game with the hardest difficulty level, I get an invalid board where many instances of the same digit repeating itself within a row/column. Not sure if this is due to the version upgrade, or perhaps I've just exhausted all the games instances in this categeory (other games in other difficulty levels play fine), but it's annoying not to be able to pull up a new (or even replay a previously completed) game at the highest difficulty level.
Too many very nice but slow visual effects
notagolfer 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
The number bar at the bottom of the screen keeps vanishing after each click and then slow appears back when you select a new cell. There is a cascade of visual effects after you complete row or 3x3 box or particular number in all 3x3 boxes or combination of those - very pretty, very slow, gets very old very fast (that's 4 very in a row). And I wont event mention start-up thing. Again, very beautiful game, nicely generated puzzles, but has too many visual effects that slows your play to a crawl. Can we have an option to turn all/some animations off or speed them up?
Enjoyable, but not fast-paced
Refactor83 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
This is a solid version of a fun time-wasting game. However, the animations are slow and make the game less than ideal for a quick waiting-for-the-bus type game.
Great!
Chronologist 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.24
I have EA's Sudoku on my iPod and it was my first time playing the game through any medium (I guess I'm late). I loved it on there, except it took a long time to navigate the board with the click wheel. Since that problem is solved on the iPhone version, I've no issues with it at all. I don't mind the startup time, music, or other common complaints. It's hands-down the best-looking Sudoku game available, and both easy and fun to play. The only other one I was tempted to download was TileSudoku (everything else...eh), which isn't bad, but lacks the polish EA's version does.
Good game play but a bit too much glitz
PopsicleChief 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
I like the app. Game play is good, and the newspaper feature means you'll never run out of puzzles. Still, the design wastes time that could be better spent solving puzzles. The opening animation is annoying after the first time, and I can't find any way to turn off the intro music, which is incredibly annoying. The menu screen is beautifully rendered, but I shouldn't have to watch the graphics every time I tap a button. The whole package could be streamlined.
great gameplay - plenty of room to improve otherwise
MrBuckwheat 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
As most folks have said, the gameplay is fantastic. Annotation, number entry and ability to highlight particular numbers are great. EA needs to allow for quicker gameplay (remove/disable the post-completion fanfare) and turn off the repetitive intros.
Maybe the best Sudoku available
Neuro77 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
This app is, as I mention in the title, probably the best one. Not that I've tried all of them, but I based it on the screen-shots provided. The layout is aesthetically pleasing and the graphics are great. No problems whatsoever. If you're deciding on which Sudoku to purchase, give this one a try. You will not be disappointed.
Serious flaws
Anonymous41909 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.24
The game sound comes on at startup, even if the game sound and music is disabled. This is messed up. No way to start up in a quiet place without drawing attention. Also, I echo the other complaints about not beingable to play the iPod. Otherwise it's good, and very fun.
Trying to choose a Sudoku game? Buy this one.
joeyzr 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.13
This is the same Sudoku title offered for the iPod for some time, and it looks and sounds even better on the iPhone! The game is full-featured with optional hints and controls. The effects and play is truly polished and a joy to play.
What Happened!!!!
Luna's Mom 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.18
I bought the original version of this game around July 20th......On August 1st I downloaded the "upgrade" and the game became UNPLAYABLE!!! Duplicate numbers and multiple numbers of the SAME denomination appeared in the same squares!!!!!! I tried to "shake" them away..I tried to reset...NO GOOD. The game was perfect the 1st time. Updating DOES NOT ALWAYS IMPROVE!!!!!
Simple, smart, elegant
gbsales 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.18
The is a great version of Sudoku. I love the way you can highlight the same number in each quad. I like the way you keep track of possible numbers in each square. On the negative side I think the way it highlights completed rows and quads is nice but gets long after a while. You should be able to skip the looong intro by touching the screen. If it needs that to load it should say so.
Unforgivable Mistake
Dr. Gee! 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.24
I used to have this game on my iPod and I like it very much, so when I saw it on iPhone I bought it without thinking twice. I was very disappointed. The game is as I know from the iPod version but one BIG mistake here is that I cannot listen to music while playing. This made stopped playing this game because I only play when I riding public transportation and I want to listen to my music while I'm playing. 2 stars for that.
Works but iPod Games version may be better
Kevlar1 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.24
I have iPod Games version (iPod nano) and iPhone version of the same game. While iPhone/iPod touch version adds touch screen feature, it lacks ability to use iPod music as background (although it isn't EA's fault.. I understand it is limitation within iPhone SDK), and it has extremely annoying start-up sound, which cannot be turned off. It is a solid Sudoku game and I would recommend anyone who likes Sudoku, but I would warn potential buyers about the start-up sound.
Great game
DarrinR 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.24
This is a great version - however the number buttons are small and it easy to inadvertently press the wrong button and lose points.
