A Collection of Sales to Start Your Weekend Right
Calendar16 Fri, 10 Feb 2012 14:00:40 UTC +00:00
The weekend is finally almost here, and before you settle in to listen to our podcast later today (you DO all listen to our podcast, right?) I thought it might be nice to roundup some of the significant sales that are currently going on so you can spend your couple of days of leisure time buried in some iOS games. Unless you work on the weekends, in which case it's even more important to load up on some games to survive your laborious obligations. Crescent Moon Godzilab Telltale Games Konami Sega Miscellaneous These are the ones that stuck out to me, but of course there's always more sales and freebies to check out at AppShopper.com or on the free AppShopper app. For instance, EA is having one of their frequent sales on a bunch of games in their library. As always, sales can end just as quickly as they begin, so Read More

Sega Running 48 Hour Sale on Select Titles
Calendar16 Fri, 29 Jul 2011 10:00:14 UTC +00:00
Sega is throwing down a random Summer Sale for a selection of their titles over the next 48 hours. The star of this sale is obviously Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Sega’s take on the Mario Kart formula. We absolutely loved the game in our review, and it’s a great deal for its sale price of $1.99. The Super Monkey Ball games are also a nice pickup if you don’t have them already, especially the iPad version which was at one time $15 if you can believe it. Then Sega’s mobile Football Manager game gets its first price cut ever, dropping by 50%. Finally, if you’re a fan of Sega’s Genesis emulators, they have a couple of those for a buck as well. Remember to stay up to date with the roller coaster ride that is App Store pricing by setting up an account with AppShopper.com where you can set up a Read More

Calendar16 Thu, 10 Feb 2011 17:10:19 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/10/2011 at 9:10am | by Andrew Groen There's officially no good reason to pay more than 99 cents for any game on the App Store this month. We always thought Valentine's Day was the kind of holiday that specialized more in cheap pink teddy bears than smartphone software, but apparently we were wrong. The past couple of weeks have been positively flooded with huge iOS video game sales from major publishers, and now Sega, Capcom, and Namco are getting in on the action. Some of their very best games are included so check out the full list. Listen up, fellas and ladies, sure you could go to the shop this Valentine's Day and get your special someone a ho-hum set of bad flowers and some fluffy pink polyester that will be sure to make them feel completely average. Or you could surprise them with an onslaught of totally awesome games Read More

SEGA Slashes Prices On The App Store, Too
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Feb 2011 17:48:57 UTC +00:00
OK. So, SEGA is following suit with the other big publishers on the App Store and is now holding its own personal deal-a-thon. Now, until whenever, you can grab around 16 different SEGA games for 80 percent off the usual price or just 99 cents. And we’re not just talking about the pub’s stable of lackluster Genesis ports getting the cut here; those games are part of the deal, for sure, but there’s also a few native gems mixed in. There are too many games to do a meaningful breakdown with, but here’s a list of what’s being offered and the prices of each: Not bad, eh? At this point, I’m not sure if we should say that the entire App Store is up for grabs, but it’s getting close as all these publishers start racing to the bottom. Who knew that Valentine’s Day would be giving us so much this Read More

Calendar16 Thu, 26 Aug 2010 15:45:57 UTC +00:00
If you’re looking for a bargain inside the App Store, then these Sega games should fit the bill quite nicely!  A wide variety of their popular titles have been dropped by at least 50%, so if you were ever put off by the slightly higher than average pricing of Sega’s apps, then now is the time to buy. Here are the games on offer, complete with their own easy link directly to the App Store: Both Space Harrier 2 and Sega Columns Deluxe remain at $0.99, and Sega’s brand new RPG release, Phantasy Star II,  sits at $2.99.  As usual, let us know if you picked up one of these bargains, and tell us what you thought of it! 'Cobra Command' Free Today, Other Price Drops
Calendar16 Sat, 17 Apr 2010 14:25:00 UTC +00:00
Data East's '80s laserdisc arcade classic Cobra Command [App Store], which came to the iPhone late last year, is available as a free download for today only. The game is normally priced at $4.99. In the game, you play as a pilot in the world's most advanced helicopter, the LX-3 Super Cobra. Your enemies consist of an elite terrorist group, who also fly around in helicopters (although presumably nowhere near as advanced as yours). Gameplay involves an interactive movie playing behind a cockpit overlay with on-screen controls to move a crosshair around the screen to fire at enemies. There are also points in the game where you will need to follow the audio prompts of your commander and steer your helicopter, this is accomplished by tilting, or using the virtual joystick depending on what method you select in the game's options. The game should appeal to fans of the long-gone, sparse Read More
Super Monkey Ball 2 50% Off This Weekend
Calendar16 Sat, 12 Dec 2009 17:22:50 UTC +00:00
Super Monkey Ball 2, the much-hyped sequel to SEGA’s first monkey rolling effort, was released on the first of the month at the premium price of $9.99.  This weekend, however, the premium title won’t be carrying a premium price, as it will be 50% off for the entire weekend. Super Monkey Ball 2 consists of tilting your device in every which way in order to get your monkey to the goal as fast as possible, while also collecting as many of the bananas that are scattered across the level as you can. Super Monkey Ball 2 features all four of your favorite Super Monkey Ball characters, 115 challenging tracks, one mini-game (with 2 more to be added via a free update), improved graphics, local four-player multiplayer via Wi-Fi that allows you to compete on all 115 of the included tracks, and improved controls.  SEGA has also indicated that they have submitted Read More
Super Monkey Ball 2 arrives for iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Dec 2009 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
Super Monkey Ball 2 [iTunes Link] is now available for the iPhone. There is good news and bad news, and yes, some of it relates to App Store policies which are out of developers' hands. I bought the original Super Monkey Ball [iTunes Link] for US$10 on the first day the App Store was available (July 10, 2008, for those who might some day want to win a trivia contest). I had seen the demo and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I also bought Bejeweled 2 [iTunes Link] for $10 on that same day. Bejeweled 2 is now selling for $3 and the original Super Monkey Ball is selling for $4. If you ask me, Bejeweled is a steal at the price, and the original version of Super Monkey Ball isn't worth $0.99. It was far too "twitchy" for my taste. I tried everything to steady my hands, Read More
Super Monkey Ball 2 Finally Coming to iPhone
Calendar16 Sat, 21 Nov 2009 03:25:41 UTC +00:00
, the iPhone game that set the $9.99 ceiling price for several major game titles that followed is expected to have a sequel launched just in time for holiday. Sega has announced that will debut with 115 new levels, a local Wi-Fi multiplayer option, highly improved graphics and, most notably the game will feature an enhanced control system. Despite the huge commercial success of the original game when it launched for iPhone in July of 2008, micro-gamers were critical of Super Monkey Ball's control sensitivity. Causing major frustration for avid users accustomed to rocking the little balled wonder ape on home consoles. "After playing a late build of the sequel, it seems they've made real strides in the controls," said Arnold Kim for , "In particular, I found turning to be much more precise than in the original." Mini-games are also expected to be added to with the first game Read More
Super Monkey Ball 2 En Route for iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Nov 2009 20:53:20 UTC +00:00
Last year, Sega’s Super Monkey Ball [App Store, $3.99] served as an ideal launch title for the App Store, introducing players to accelerometer-driven games. Recently, Sega indicated that Super Monkey Ball 2 will emerge for the iPhone 18 months after the original was released for the App Store. “We looked very, very closely at what was working on the Wii game in terms of motion controls and what we could extrapolate from that,” explains Sega’s Ethan Einhorn. “Part of what we were able to pull from that was much better control over the left and right movement of the character. So we have something now where it is just so much easier to control the character and to make the precision movements that you have to.” A host of new features learned from creating the original game will be added to Super Monkey Ball 2, including new and improved controls, 115 Read More
November 19th, 2009 James Isabel SEGA is finally making a comeback after the sh1tteous port of Sonic the Hedgehog. This time they’ll be bringing the sequel to one of the AppStore’s flagship games (Super Monkey Ball)… Super Monkey Ball 2 (doh!)! got exclusive info and screens from SEGA which we will rehash and decrypt for you. Are you excited for this sequel? Controls Still A Problem? There’s not even a question that the original’s control scheme had all sorts of wicked problems. From unresponsiveness to laggy-ness to being just pure SCREWED UP! All that changes with the sequel as SEGA deemed this to be the biggest problem with the original… HALLELUJAH! At least they admit to it. To prove they’re even more serious this time around, they brought in another developer Other Ocean for the sequel. What’s New? There will be 115 stages and 5 new themes inspired by the Wii Read More

Calendar16 Fri, 04 Sep 2009 22:43:45 UTC +00:00
This weekend’s sales include tons of big name titles, including the elusive Real Racing, Resident Evil 4, and even the popular Civilization Revolution, so let’s jump right in. Real Racing ($9.99 -> $6.99): One of the best racing games to ever hit the App Store.  Real Racing features great graphics, intelligent AI, 48 cars, 12 tracks, local multiplayer for up to six players, and stellar controls.  This is the first time Firemint has ever placed it on sale, so don’t miss out. Yahtzee Adventures ($2.99 -> $1.99): The classic game of Yahtzee, but modified for the iPhone.  It features four different game modes, touch and accelerometer-based controls, and four-player multiplayer via pass and play. Trivial Pursuit ($4.99 -> $2.99): EA seems to be the king of porting board games to the iPhone, and this one is no exception.  The game features thousands of new trivia questions, touch-based controls, four-player multiplayer via Read More
40% Good, 60% Bad
phill_corm 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game has some major benefits and some very major detractors. After loading and playing it 3 times on my phone, I will never likely load it up again unless changes are made. Until then I wasted 10 bucks.
Good Game, Bad Controls
Kevin871 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The Game looks great, but performs poorly. The motions controls are terrible. Devs should learn from this game to enable some sort of calibration. Hopefully an update will fix the issue. Stay away from this for now until it is updated.
Horrible controls
dominikhofmann 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm extremely disappointed with the way SMB turned out. The game looks and sounds incredible but the controls are sub-par. Getting a grasp on this thing is nearly impossible and a major turn-off. Don't waste your money.
Huge Letdown
xbdb 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
After all the hype, I expect great things. Instead I got a game that is too hard to control (with no setting to adjust tilt sensitivity). Is there a way to get my money back?
This is so hard to control it's unplayable
Chris Ricca 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I did a lot of gaming when I was a kid. I own a Wii now, so I'm usually pretty good with motion sensor controlled games, but I couldn't play past the 7th board (of 100s), and I don't think I'll ever open up the app ever again. $10 TOTALLY WASTED.
Be prepared
Bryan_W 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great game but HARD!! Because of the accelerometer any slight movement moves the ball and, once going one way, the perspective changes and you have to immediately turn the phone to keep it on course. You'll see what I mean when you play it. With some practice I'm sure I'll get over it but it looks like some frustration for a while
Finally!
MrTrik 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Granted this is one of the first games for the iphone/touch (offline games). And it's spectacular. At $9.99 it's a fair price (compare to DS/PSP other mobile games) and you've got a winner! Finally something useful to do with the iPhone when offline besides music/video. For example... sitting on a plane you can have some fun instead of updating your contacts. Again. It's definitely intuitive, but using the accelorometer (sp?) will take some getting used to and finesse. Definitely a must have for iPhone/Touch owners. And kudos to Sega for delivering such quality so early. Looking forward to more titles!
Great game
P. Ouwerkerk 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Though it took me a little getting used to the sensitive accelerometer-guided steering, this is a very intuitive game. It's an understatement to say the graphics are beyond anything I've ever seen on a phone, and this breaks ground for an exciting new class of games and applications. Gameplay is addictive though frustrating in the first few levels as you learn how to guide the Super Monkey Ball. At under $10, you owe it to yourself to test this game by SEGA, if not for a fun way to spend a few minutes here and there, it certainly offers a glimpse into the future of (mobile) gaming.
Good attempt
w2a3t4 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is an awesome attempt and the graphics and everything are great, but the controls seem to be too tight.
So Amazing!
Shaun C. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is sincerely one of the best gaming experiences of my entire life. EVER.
Worth It.
nibbet.com 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was skeptical but it was worth every penny.
Good Game, Awful Controls
thekrillr 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's a good, entertaining game. Great graphics. My only problem is that the controls are VERY difficult to understand and get the hang of. There needs to be some sort of sensitivity setting or something, or some way to calibrate it to how you normally hold it. Fix it, Sega!
Will not run
RBasil 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've tried everything, uninstalled and re-installed multiple times. powered off my iPhone and back on again. Nothing, no errors during install. Click on the icon on my iPhone, the logo shows for a few seconds and then just quits. VERY disappointed that I can't get this working.
This game rocks

Don't believe the 5 Star Ratings
the jude abides 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
The graphics are amazing and this game would be so much fun except the monkey is almost impossible to control. The accelerometer does not work at all in getting the monkey to go which way you want him to.
Excellent, worth the money.
Silverflash 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
First of all, this review is coming from someone who played and loved Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz on the Wii. I am also using an iPod Touch to play. This game is absolutely worth $10, and here's why.
Not up to the hype
mac4000 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This game would be really fun if the controls were not frustrating. Game doesn't include instructions on how you are supposed to hold phone which would help lower the learning curve.
Bad controls
jlhawn 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Believe me... I love games and am usually very good at them, but after trying for hours, I just can't get past level 7 of world 1 because of bad accelerometer controls... It's way too sensitive. You tilt it slightly and your character flies off the edge in a FALL OUT... I would hold off on buying until they fix it.
Controls too sensitive!
DJ Ren 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I hope someone from Sega is reading these posts. I am not the only one that is having trouble enjoying this game. The controls are too sensitive on the 1st gen iPhone. I've tried for hours to get the "right touch" and it's not controllable. You barely tilt the iPhone and the monkey moves drastically along with the environment /background. I hope they issue a fix soon.
GREAT GAME!
dpslade14 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This should definatley be the first app everyone gets in the APP STORE!. It really lives up to the hype with 110 levels of monkey rolling madness!
Fun for 20 seconds
jettisoned 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you're looking for a game to show off the accelerometer in iPhone then nothing beats the monkey. If you want something playable for more than a few mins you might look elsewhere. The controls make all play extremely difficult and by the seventh level I would say near impossible
Entirely too sensitive!!
luckylikeu 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was very excited about this game coming out and it was the first one I purchased on my iPhone, but I was kind of disappointed. The slightest movement of the phone causes the monkey ball character to fly off the side of the playing field. I wish their was a demo to play before purchasing these games! Save the ten bucks, this is too hard!
not worth it
Alice Cabrera 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Ok, I am not complaining cause the game is too hard. I'm complaining cause the program acts very laggy in response to your tilts and stuff. It's seconds behind which kinda makes it unfun (it doesn't feel like you are tilting the world vs. trying to get a computer to respond to your inputs). If you want a similar but much more fun game, try Manic Marble. It's hard (which is good cause you only get four levels which is why I tried this game that came with more) but the controls are much more responsive and it is much more fun. I thought maybe people were right that the people complaining about the control on this game just weren't good at it but I found I wish I had listened to them and not wasted the money (and maybe spent the money on the non free version of Manic Marble (which has a free version so you can try for yourself to see how much better the controls are). There's a difference between being frustrated cause something is too hard and frustrated cause you feel like you are not doing well cause the computer is not responding to your input. I wouldn't even say this game is frustrating more than just not fun.
Addicting
b0unty hunter 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This game is very fun and addicting. I always play Racing live and than I have to wait until stuff refills... Now I have stuff to do when I'm waiting. This game is totally worth the money that it's at now so I say buy this gameThe graphics are good, there's 100 levels ( I think ) so this game is in my top 5 apps. I have the iPod touch and it's kinda hard to control it but I'm getting the Han of it now so it just makes it more challenging for me. Overall this is a great game and the price is just right.
Great Game... Terrible Controls
Vayapues 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
The game is amazing. Good graphics, good levels, great music, etc... I have played more than 2/3rds of the boards, and am not complainging that the game itself is too hard. Just that the controls are terrible. The over-sensitivity is a problem that MANY people have complained about. Instead of fixing this issue, Sega insists that they know best, and proceed to update the app again and again without making the controls less sensitive. Very frustrating. If you want a fun game, this is it. But understand that the controls are not optimum. Prepare to be patient with them. This would easily be a five star app if the controls were not so sensitive. Once you get the hang of it, it is fun. However, because it only takes a very slight over-correction to lose control, just the smallest over-tilt, and you completly lose your handle. Then you have to take a few moments to get it tilted back to center. The difference in movement between too far, and just right is barely perceptable. I suppose it shows off just how sensitive the iPhone accelerometer is, but not good for gaming. That said, I will keep playing it. But I pleed with Sega to listen to their users, and have the good sense to give us what we want. Either make the darn thing less sensitive or allow us to do it ourselves. Then the literally several hundred comments on the Internet about how the controls are not callibrated very well, will go away, and your users will be much happier.
Good but needs update
Joe Hill 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Great game but for next update please add an accelerometer calibration button because right now to i need to hold my touch at like a 45 degree angle to make the game flat. I would really like to fix this problem
Great game
Nick Fischer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I bought this game when it was like $10 and I still think it is worth the price, you need to get used to the controls but they are very good. The farthest I have gotten is level 13 on space case, which is a very diificult level but all in all this is a great game and I reccomend it to anyone especially for $6.  and
