The classic SEGA game gets an update SEGA’s Super Monkey Ball franchise was just past its iOS popularity apex when they launched Super Monkey Ball 2: (Sakura Edition) in April 2010 as a universal game on the heels of the launch of the original iPad. The classic tilt-controlled platformer, however, sat untouched after that until last Christmas when it received it’s iOS 5 makeover. Now SEGA has updated the game again adding a new multiplayer option. Players can compete against up to three friends via Game Center, each playing a different character: AiAi, MeeMee, Baby, or my favorite, GonGon. It’s a quick race to the finish line with the option to pick the level. Random matching is also available, but the wait can be over five minutes to find a single partner. The new mode is welcome and may help revive Super Monkey Ball 2, but what doesn’t appear updated are Read More

Calendar16 Fri, 10 Feb 2012 14:00:40 UTC +00:00

I thought it might be nice to roundup some of the significant sales that are currently going on so you can spend your couple of days of leisure time buried in some iOS games. Crescent Moon Godzilab Telltale Games Konami Sega Miscellaneous These are the ones that stuck out to me, but of course there's always more sales and freebies to check out at AppShopper.com or on the free AppShopper app. For instance, EA is having one of their frequent sales on a bunch of games in their library. As always, sales can end just as quickly as they begin, so Read More

Sega Running 48 Hour Sale on Select Titles
Calendar16 Fri, 29 Jul 2011 10:00:14 UTC +00:00
Sega is throwing down a random Summer Sale for a selection of their titles over the next 48 hours. The star of this sale is obviously Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Sega’s take on the Mario Kart formula. We absolutely loved the game in our review, and it’s a great deal for its sale price of $1.99. The Super Monkey Ball games are also a nice pickup if you don’t have them already, especially the iPad version which was at one time $15 if you can believe it. Then Sega’s mobile Football Manager game gets its first price cut ever, dropping by 50%. Finally, if you’re a fan of Sega’s Genesis emulators, they have a couple of those for a buck as well. Remember to stay up to date with the roller coaster ride that is App Store pricing by setting up an account with AppShopper.com where you can set up a Read More
When I think of Valentine’s Day I think of Cupid prancing around, shooting his arrows into people to help them fall in love, couples planning their days out with brunches, picnics, and an elegant dinner at a 5 star restaurant. I also think of the rest of you poor bastards who say that you’re fine with being single and you prefer your independence rather than reporting in with someone on everything you do, but let’s face it, you just haven’t found the right person yet. Instead of staying home and being miserable watching RomComs while eating a bucket of Turkey Hill ice cream, you can stay home and celebrate your independence by playing games all weekend long. If playing some fine iOS games is your idea of a good time, then you’ve come to the right place as a both EA Mobile and Gameloft have dropped the prices of their iOS Read More

Happy Thanksgiving – Here Are a TON of Games on Sale
Calendar16 Thu, 25 Nov 2010 11:04:08 UTC +00:00
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, and has been all my life. What's there not to love about an entire day revolving around eating massive amounts of turkey, stuffing, and all the other fixings? Sure, I could do without needing to feign interest in football, but thankfully tryptophan overload usually allows me to sleep through all of that. If you're looking for something to do this year while you do your best to either pretend to be interested in football or anxiously wait for the food to be done, there are a ton of sales on the App Store to consider. The basis of this post comes from SirAwesome's awesome thread in our new price drops, freebies, and deals forum. He put together an extremely exhaustive listing of everything that's on sale, and the thread is good to stop by just to make sure you're not missing anything that might Read More

Dozens of buzzards have made my suburban Connecticut backyard their winter home in recent years. I have a neighbor with a soft spot for these beasts, which he attracts with meat scraps. The birds jostle and scavenge their way through the day. A few springtime stragglers remain. What kind of vultures are they? I have no idea. I downloaded onto my iPhone and iPad several apps for birders in hopes of more accurately identifying the birds, not to mention the hawks, jays and other species that have lately sounded my predawn wake-up call. Serious birders marvel at apps like iBird ($20 for iBird Explorer Plus on the iPhone, soon on Android), iBird Yard ($5 for iPad) Audubon Birds ($20 on iPhone), National Geographic Hand-Held Birds ($10 on iPhone), BirdsEye ($20 for iPhone) and, for more specialized tastes, Peterson Guides ($3 for various iPhone titles) and Chirp! There were a few complaints with lacking some minigames and content. The iPad is correcting it… Super Monkey Ball 2 HD : SE is a reimagining of the insanely popular iPhone version with some new added content and minigamesl. And at first glance, the iPad seems perfect for this game. But, does it live up to expectations? Keep reading if you want to uncover the naked truth. Recap Super Monkey Ball (SMB for short) is an excellent game where you guide on of three primate characters through a long series of levels via use of the accelerometer, and it has a very long play value and can provide you with levels that last well beyond your attention span. SMB was originally a Gamecube title, and it was an excellent fit for that platform, until the iPhone version, first released in 2008, changed everything. It brought this title onto a platform that Read More
From iPhone to iPad: Revisiting Super Monkey Ball 2
Calendar16 Sat, 10 Apr 2010 22:30:00 UTC +00:00
There are a lot of great new apps for the iPad, and there are some terrific old ones that have made the move as well. In "From iPhone to iPad," TUAW will revisit some of our favorite games and utilities that originated on the iPhone, and see how they've transitioned to the larger device. Have they made the most out of the new hardware? Is the application worth a separate re-purchase? After all, you can keep running nearly all of your old software in pixel doubling mode. First up? Super Monkey Ball 2. We first looked at Super Monkey Ball a couple of years ago. My kids and I found the game hard to play, although I did appreciate the graphics. I wasn't alone in my negative SMB assessment. Its sequel, Monkey Ball 2, debuted late last year. It was a worthy follow-on that greatly improved on the original's playability, and Read More
Let’s set aside the question of whether you should get an iPad and suppose you already bought one last weekend. You probably floated home and loaded it with a few whiz-bang apps and maybe even passed it around to your friends. At some point in all the euphoria, you may also have wondered whether this device is just a trophy or something you can actually use. Such self-doubts can be easily cast aside, providing you delve a little more deeply into the App Store than the Top 100 list — and are ready to open the wallet again. If you budget around $100 for a few new and upgraded apps, you can easily make the iPad into much more of a constant companion than something you just trot out when the neighbors are watching. Start with productivity apps, because a mobile device is most valuable when it lets you work anytime, Read More
Top 11 iPad Games You Need To Be Playing
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Apr 2010 21:54:56 UTC +00:00
The release of the iPad is finally upon us. Some of you were sitting at home, sipping your morning cup ‘o joe when your friendly FedEx man came by to drop off your iPad, while others sat outside of your local Apple Store on a milk crate for a week straight eating nothing but Doritos and Mountain Dew. Regardless of how you obtained your iPad, the important thing is that you have it. I posted an article on Friday showcasing games that were readily available for purchase on the App Store. The list covered a lot of great games from equally great publishers, but it lacked something important: My own personal picks! That’s right, this here article is a way for me to share with you what games I’ve played and recommend to new iPad owners. So without further ado, let’s get down to business. Mirror’s Edge for iPad ($12.99) – Read More
by One of the downsides of the iPad is that the paid applications are significantly more pricey than the apps available for the iPhone. Sure the iPad is designed to take the app experience — especially around gaming — to the next level, but does the supersized screen warrant a supersized price? I promptly paid for and downloaded Super Monkey Ball 2 for iPad [iTunes link] to find out firsthand. Watch the video below to find out whether or not this app is a hit or miss and worth the expense. It looks like we’re officially at the home stretch for tomorrow’s release of the Apple iPad as we’re now within 24 hours of its release.  If you’ve taken the plunge and are counting down the hours until its release, this may very well be the longest couple of hours you’ve ever felt in your life.  But hold on.  Have you even thought about what apps you plan on downloading for your new bundle of joy?  More importantly, what GAMES will you be wasting countless hours on your couch playing? Apple flipped the switch yesterday to allow iPad apps to be visible on iTunes.  The thing is, there are already a ton of games available for the iPad, and it hasn’t even launched!  That’s where your ole Uncle Danny comes in.  I’ve taken the liberty of scouring the App Store for any and every iPad game you should have your eyes set Read More

You might want forgo the chocolate eggs this Easter and save those pennies. Up-rezzed version of the popular racing game. Don’t expect anything new other than improved graphics. If you already own the game for iPhone or iPod Touch you’ll have to by it again to see it in HD. That or you can run it in x2 resolution. Expect to pay an extra few bucks for HD goodness. Check out our review of the iPhone version here. One of the best FPS’s on iPhone. Apart from better graphics, it’s hard to see how the increased screen real estate will improve the game, and if the controls will cause hand cramps. All will be revealed on the 3rd. Great game!!!
XOXO7382748 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This version of super monkey ball is much better than the one for iPhone. This one helps you have better control of the monkey that you play with. Also very nice graphics and easier to control with. I LOVE IT!!!!
Fun with monkeys
MordenB5 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I never played the iphone version of this game and always kinda sucked at the gamecube one, but the gameplay mechanics with the iPad accelerometers are a perfect match and make this version very fun! It's great that the iPads screen has such a wide viewing angle, because you will use all of it trying to keep that little monkey going the right way.
Great iPad launch title
BillsFanNo1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
My son has thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. We have played various SMB games on consoles and handhelds, this is the most connected you can be to the gameplay and it is easily the best version.
A worth while improvement of the iPhone versions
samcap6464 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Awesome game, packed with lots of creative levels that fully utilize the ipads high-res screen. Also has some very fun and well thought out mini games that really help justify the price. This game seems a lot more engaging on the bigger device!
Full Blown Monkey Ball
Foiden 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
A full blown Monkey Ball for the iPad. This definitely has a slew of the features not in the iPhone/iPod Touch version. This is pretty much a release on the feature and detail level of the non-Portable console releases. The mini games are updated for the touch controls and are just as fun as before. The main game looks much closer to the console versions except for these being new levels. There's also the extra details, for which the iPhone version didn't have, like having your character and the ball he/she's in in 3D. Seeing the ball spin with your movement makes a heap of difference in helping you determine your current acceleration. This makes it much easier to see what you're doing enhancing your control. Making this a whole new game instead of an iPhone port was probably the best move SEGA made with this game. A very good job. It's great when a launch title decides to go ahead and support the iPad hardware in line with its capabilities. The increased graphics doesn't slow the game down. It's fast and shows some of the extra muscle the iPad has over it's smaller cousins.
Works well on he iPad!
Win2008R2User 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I was skeptical to spend $10 bucks on this game. I played the XBox version way back when and I just couldn't see how well or how accurate it would work on the iPad. After two minutes of playing it I was hooked! I couldn't put it down! It works extremely well on the iPad--it's very accurate/precise. I bought several games at launch date, including Command and Conquer, Civilization Revolution, Dungeon Hunter HD, Tetris and a few others. While the other games are good in their own rights, Civilization Revolution in particular, this game far is my favorite. And if you take public transportation like I do to go to work, play this game and it will just "wow" anyone near you who see you go crazy with the game. Plus, it showcases the iPad's big screen and graphics capibilities in 3D. It's a well adopted game for the iPad. Great job SEGA!
THIS IS GREAT AND WELL WORTH!!
Pete Papadim 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I have played the super monkey ball 1 & 2 for iPhone and I love them! But this game brings it to a extreme new level! The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is super comfortable! And I love the new monkey target :D Great job developers! Totally made me love my iPad :D
Fantastic
WarriorPrincess8 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great graphics fantastic control worth the money.
Disappointing
nbuubu 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It's a decent port of an old favorite, but the frame-rate definitely stutters. I'll chalk at up to this just being a launch title and I hope sega patches the game at a later point. As it plays now the jerky frame-rate is distracting enough to make me regret my purchase.
Awesome app
Emily Aquino 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
At first I was a little puzzled on if I should spend $10 on an app. But now I'm glad i bought it.I love the mini games there really fun and I just think the whole game is fun(:
New icon
Hitz 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Im one of those guys that like the icons on apps to be pretty. So change your app icon and it would be five stars. Other than that great app :)
Best version of SMB
Ycaleb24 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I have played SMB on every platform it is available on and this is hands down the best version. The control is spot on. This is a great tech demo for people that don't get the iPad. My only gripe is the cost. This game is worth the money but it concerns me that so many apps are in this range, it makes me much more selective in my purchases. Having said that this game will not disappoint and has plenty of replay value.
Hate it
geabus 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It is extremely hard to control, I want my money back
MUCH IMPROVED OVER THE IPHONE VERSION
Vayapues 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Though I DID take the time to learn to use the iPhone version, and eventually did beat it, I always felt that the controls were FAR too sensitive. For this reason, I never even bothered to purchase the second version for the iPhone. I didn't feel that I had the time to invest in learning the controls of an overly sensitive game. Where Sega went very wrong on the iPhone, they went right on the iPad. The controls are much better. Instead of flying off the screen when you have a barely perceptable twitch of the hand (as with the iPhone) you are able to stay on track in this game. Great music, amazing graphics (as many iPad games seem to come with) and just an all around fun game.
Great Gameplay - Improvements to be Made
ec747 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I enjoy this graphics are great, however when i play and then exit the app and come back it makes me start the world over again which is annoying, also I'm glad you brought in monkey target, but with only one level a. it's really dull and boring, and b. i dont want to have to touch the middle of the ball to open it, i want to touch anywhere on the screen to open the ball, other then those adjustments to be made, glad i purchased i really enjoy!
Great game but needs to be harder
Chipotlie 12 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I beat this game on 1 charge on the iPad I was able to beat every level. the graphics are ok allittle jerky but usable. I would give it. 5 stars if the graphics were allittle better and their was more levels. But it's pretty good besides from those little things.
Good but short
R W E 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
GOOD: -Controls are fine. -Graphics are very pleasant. -Game play is fun BAD: -Length: games should average about 1-2 hours of game play for every $2 spent but this one is probably closer to $3 an hour ratio. -Mini games were pointless. Golf was okay but the other 3 were not really an addition -Difficulty was A bit lacking. It was close to where it should have been but not quite there. -Price was high at $10 ADVICE: If you love marble games like this one and you don't mind minimal over spending than this will be good if $ is an issue than wait for a sale. If it is sold for $6-8 it will be perfect.
Good, but not perfect
RafiParrr 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I bought the original monkey ball on the iPod touch when it came out and found it to be unplayable. This one is much better, as the increased size of the iPad makes it easier to control the little monkey around. It's still fiendishly difficult, however, so if you're looking for a casual gaming experience, this isn't it. Pros: -a ton of content. The game ships with over a hundred levels and four fun mini games, of which monkey golf and target stand out as particularly fun. The mini games all support pass the ipad around multiplayer, which is a most welcome feature -the game looks really good, with fully 3D characters and gorgeous backgrounds. The japan level really stands out in the looks department. Cons: -not enough options. I would like the option to be able to flip the screen since it's a lot easier to hold the iPad with the case on if the flap folds down instead of up. On top of that, though I appreciate the replay feature, it would be nice to turn it off; having to constantly skip replays is rather tedious. Also, would it kill to be able topic how many rounds of monkey target or monkey bowling we get to play? Three targets just doesn't feel like enough, and a ten frame go at bowling takes a long time... -performance issues. Only really a problem in the main game, but there are noticeable slow down issues at the beginning of a level and the end. The issues at the end might be remedied by disabling the replays, but it would still be nice to know that my games take full advantage of apple's A4 processor. (and before you ask, yes, I reset my iPad before playing.) Conclusion: This is a great first game to get if you just bought an iPad. The single player is long, challenging and will keep you busy for a long time, while the mini games make this great to share with friends. Still gotta love that monkey target. I will update this score if future releases fix the problems, so Other Ocean, get on it!

Jonjonjon2 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This game is infuriating. I cannot figure out what angle to hold the iPad, and it's a bit heavy to be waiving around. Don't like it.
A Gamble Worth It
thetoothfairy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Ok I bought Super Monkey Ball for the iPhone and hated it because it was soooooooooo hard to play.. what a waste of money! I took a gamble with this game and I can say that at least I can play it now... for the people that saying make it harder forget that! For once I can play the darn thing! I like how they added bumpers so you don't fall off as easy! Thanks!
Ok but...
maddierapp 3.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
Its fun and it's worth it if you haven't had the previous IPhone game. If you did have The iPhone game then don't get it because they only added like 10 more levels from the far east and the mini games are not very fun. They should make a lot more far east maps. OR make a monkey ball 3 because I would definitely buy it!!!!!
It works great now
JJmenotyou 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
Sega listened and they fixed the problem and now the game is great again. It works on my iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 thank you very much Sega.
Seriously??
steven's touch 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
All of the other SEGA customers and I have waited a tremendous amount of time for this update to come out and for the app to start working. Finally we got the update. What's the catch? The app still doesn't work. I expect more. Please make an update and give us extra stuff for making us wait for all this time.
Working fine now on iOS 5
davidbrit2 4.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
The latest update appears to have fixed the compatibility issues. Gameplay is nice and smooth, as expected. And the surprise addition of iPhone compatibility is a nice touch. However, I've resigned myself to the fact that nothing will ever compare to the original Super Monkey Ball for GameCube. This is is a good effort, but it's a bit simplistic and watered down in comparison (like the whole series has been since the DS release). But still, it's not bad for Monkey Ball on the go.
Thank You!!!
ThaGibbskin 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
Now that it finally works, it's the best monkey ball game ever!!!
Works great on iPad 2
SkippyDog08 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
This game is exactly what you'd expect of super monkey ball on iPad. I got it on sale and it works perfect on my iPad 2 iOS 5.0.1. The iPad is a little big to be tilting wildly but it also helps smooth your movements due to the weight. Love the graphics and classic SMB music.
Great game!! But...
AKB48 SKE48 4.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
I would give this game 5 stars if you guys add 10 more levels for the far east and HOPEFULLY add far west. That would be greatful.
Controls 
Sereniti☪Cherish 4.0 stars Version: 2.0.0

At first, our screen was blank upon startup after a brief glimpse of some smb characters. I deleted and redownloaded the app, and now it works beautifully. This game is as good as a friend of mine said it was. 5 stars for graphics and gameplay.
