Hands On With Whitaker Trebella's 'Polymer'
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Apr 2012 22:31:10 UTC +00:00
If you pay attention to the world of iOS game music, you might already know Whitaker Trebella's work. He has composed themes for games that include Super Stickman Golf [$0.99], Tilt to Live [$2.99] and Velocispider [$1.99]. But now he's taken on the role of game developer. Trebella's first game, Polymer, is due to hit the App Store soon, and we've had a chance to play with a recent build. It's a strategic shape-creating game, in Trebella's words, enhanced with a great soundtrack. A polymer, in the parlance of the game, is a complete shape, one with no unfinished edges. You achieve this by sliding rows and columns back and forth to move pieces into place. A skilled player might be able to use every piece on the board, but each piece you move takes six or nine others with it. Larger creations become exponentially more difficult to make without disruption, Read More

Price Drop: The Weekend's Best iOS App Deals, March 23
Calendar16 Fri, 23 Mar 2012 22:25:32 UTC +00:00
Posted 03/23/2012 at 3:25pm | by J Keirn-Swanson Here they are, get 'em while they're fresh. Price drops on the apps you want, price drops  galore all across the spectrum, and if you don't move fast, you just might miss out. This iPad only was $4.99 and featured in Apple's "Great Role Playing Games" category and now it's yours if you have the $0.99 to spare. A daily deal from developer EA, the classic board game makes it to iOS and instead of the Pacific Avenue price of $4.99, they're swinging you a Baltic Avenue $0.99.  Microsoft might be laggard in porting their Office Suite to the iPad, but others haven't been as lazy. Usually ten big bucks, Smart Office falls to a mere $0.99.  And if you're a regular MS Project junkie, then manage those rascals with this usually $30 app as it is temporarily plummeting to a fiver. 'Lunar Racer' Review - Jump, Flip, Shoot and Win
Calendar16 Wed, 11 Jan 2012 12:00:00 UTC +00:00
The first batch of new game releases in 2012 last week was relatively quiet, but Lunar Racer [99¢] from NoodleCake Studios (the makers of [99¢/HD] ) have got things off to a positive start by releasing a new lo-gravity racing game with plenty of jumps, heaps of flips and a couple of weapons. Lunar Racer starts with a basic driving test, to secure your lunar license. During your rookie training, you learn that tapping the left half of the screen activates "gravity assist" to pull your vehicle towards the ground, while tapping the right side activates nitro boosters for a burst of speed. There's no steering controls, as this game is all about timing your speed-boosts and jumps to beat your opponents. Once you're airborne, tilting the device left or right does a backwards or forwards flip. These flips are essential as each flip replenishes your nitro tanks, allowing you to Read More
Games for the weekend: Super Stickman Golf
Calendar16 Fri, 06 Jan 2012 22:48:14 UTC +00:00
Games for the Weekend is a weekly feature aimed at helping you avoid doing something constructive with your downtime. Each Friday we’ll be recommending a game for Mac, iPhone or iPad that we think is awesome enough to keep you busy until Monday, at least. Super Stickman Golf ($0.99 Universal) is a sports game that plays more like a platformer. As in other golf games, you use your club to hit a tiny little golf ball into a hole that is so far away you need a flag in order to see where it is located.  The big difference here is that each golf course is designed more like a level from a Mario game than something you’d see on the PGA tour. The scoring system is familiar as well, since it works just like golf. Get the golf ball into the hole in less than par for the entire course, Read More
New Trailer and Screens for Upcoming 'Lunar Racer'
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Dec 2011 13:00:36 UTC +00:00
You might remember that way back in June we took a look at Super Stickman Golf [99¢] developer Noodlecake Studios' current project, called Lunar Racing at the time. This multiplayer-centric 2D side-scrolling racing game looked like it had all sorts of promise, especially considering how well Noodlecake nailed the multiplayer aspect of Super Stickman Golf. But, it's been nearly six months and I'd started wondering just what the heck was going on with the development. Well Noodlecake must have sensed my curiosity, because recently they sent over some new details and have released a trailer for their new game, now with the slightly adjusted title of Lunar Racer. Gameplay will involve racing against 3 other vehicles on each of our solar system's moons. Each vehicle auto-accelerates at the same speed, so everybody is on equal footing. The key to doing well is performing tricks as you race to fill up your Read More
Kard Combat, Spy Mouse, more push big updates
Calendar16 Fri, 04 Nov 2011 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
Hothead Games' great freemium card game for iOS, Kard Combat, has gotten a big update this week in the App Store. The biggest new feature is a new "pass-and-play" multiplayer mode, which allows for two players with one iOS device in the same place to play their cards out, and then pass the device on to the next person. Obviously, it requires a little bit of honor on the part of players, but if you just want to play a friendly game of Kard Combat, it's a cool mode to try. Game Center multiplayer has also been added to the game to work inside iOS 5, and there are new UI updates and a few other new features in there as well. Firemint's line-drawing stealth game Spy Mouse has also gotten an update, bringing in new global leaderboards, new challenges, and a few other bug fixes and other tweaks. Kiska, the Read More

Sunday June 19th is Father’s Day, and if your dad has an iPad – or is lucky enough to be getting one on the day – why not get him a bundle of new apps to go with it.  We’ve gathered together ten apps which every father should have on his Apple tablet to give you some ideas! OK, so it’s an obvious choice, but not every new iPad owner will have heard of it!  Without a doubt one of the very best mobile games ever made, and one which can be enjoyed by everyone.  $4.99/£2.99. A massive selection of eBooks available for the iPad and iPhone, with free samples and syncing between devices.  You can always download Apple’s own iBooks too.  Free. An excellent casual golf arcade game along the same lines as Cat Physics and other physics-based titles.  It’s a universal app for the iPhone and iPad (with Retina Read More
About a week or so ago, Noodlecake Games was in our forums talking up the latest update for Super Stickman Golf [99¢], the golf-themed physics game with the phenomenal online multiplayer mode that has become an underground sensation. In a post discussing update 1.6 for Super Stickman Golf, they happened to mention that they have been fiddling around with a new game concept lately, and posted a few screens of what they’re currently calling Lunar Racing. There really isn’t much known about Lunar Racing at the moment, but you can gather a few nuggets from the screens themselves. It appears to be a 2D side-scrolling racing game, and prominently features a multiplayer mode on the title screen. If there’s one thing I’ve come to learn, it’s that Noodlecake Games can create an incredibly fun multiplayer experience, so just the inclusion of a multiplayer mode is reason for me to get excited. Drop whatever you’re doing and head over to the App Store to download Super Stickman Golf [Link] which is currently free. Super Stickman Golf is a physics puzzle game wrapped in the veil of a golfing game. Gameplay involves choosing the trajectory of each shot as try to land your ball in the hole in a minimum amount of tries. With 29 nine-hole courses to play and plenty of ball types that grant special abilities, Super Stickman Golf is one of the most robust, challenging, and fun experiences in the App Store. Even better than the single-player offering in Super Stickman Golf is the fantastic real-time online multiplayer that was added to the game this past April. We covered this new online mode pretty extensively, and found it to be insane amounts of fun. The goal is to be the first to land your ball in the cup, and since up Read More

Super Stickman Golf Review
Calendar16 Sat, 21 May 2011 00:00:16 UTC +00:00
Posted 05/20/2011 at 4:00pm | by Andrew Hayward This isn't your grandpa's game of golf. Unlike traditional simulations and other arcade-stylized affairs that utilize 3D game engines and realistic-looking courses, Super Stickman Golf recasts the slow-paced sport as a side-scrolling platform game of sorts. But despite the obvious change in design, it very much retains the core essence of playing golf: use your judgment, power, and available equipment as efficiently as possible to get the ball in the hole. Granted, real-life golf doesn't employ balls that immediately drop at your direction, or sticky balls that attach to walls (or walls at all, for that matter), but that's part of the allure of this oddly captivating 2D affair. Guiding your ball to the hole is as simple as lining up a shot with the virtual buttons and determining the power, but the many inventive courses mean the simplicity stops right about there. TUAW's Daily App: Super Stickman Golf
Calendar16 Tue, 26 Apr 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
Super Stickman Golf is a golf game, and a pretty good one at that. But it's not like any golf game you've ever played before. For one thing, it's played in 2D. Like Worms, you line up a shot, hit an energy meter right where you want it to go, then send your ball across a variety of 2D stages. But this is a wacky game of golf -- some of the stages have floating islands and other obstacles in them, and some of your shots can either get hit or roll off at weird angles. Fortunately, you have some help in the form of ball power-ups, so your golf balls can stick to the walls, freeze in midair or otherwise careen around the stages. It's a lot of fun; it's still golf, but it's more of a wacky arcade sport than the "good walk ruined." The presentation is great, with Read More
One of my favorite games that never seemed to get a lot of attention is Noodlecake Games’ Stick Golf [99¢/HD], which was released in May of last year. Far from being a traditional golf game, Stick Golf was more of a 2D artillery style game where each shot required figuring out the correct trajectory to launch your ball in order to get it into each hole in as few shots as possible. This particular gameplay fit extremely well as a golfing game, and Stick Golf featured a ton of content with 16 different 9-hole courses that ran the gamut from fairly typical to wildly fantastical. Then this past December, the sequel Super Stick Golf [99¢/Lite] was released, and improved upon the original in practically every way. It contains all of the courses from the first game plus 13 brand new courses, and it introduces special ball types that you can use Read More
Super Stick Golf

Golfing games are all over the place in the App Store and thankfully there is a wide variety of styles to pick from. Super Stick Golf falls into more of the Scorched Earth category of gaming where you will line up a shot and use your calculations to get the ball to the hole. Super Stick Golf for iPhone is Swingin’ Good Times
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Dec 2010 02:15:30 UTC +00:00
One of my favorite games for the iPad has to be Stick Golf HD. I love to golf, and while the game isn’t a golf game in the classic sense, it is a super-fun side-scrolling golf game chock-full of goodness. That’s why, when I stumbled up on the very new Super Stick Golf for iPhone, I purchased and installed immediately on my iPad… before I realized the game was optimized for iPhone, and not the iPad. Oh well. While at the moment I’m playing the game in 2x mode on the iPad, it’s still pretty darn good. The game builds upon the success of the original Stick Golf title. Inside you’ll find all of the ‘classic’ courses from the original, plus, many new ‘super’ courses to challenge you. There’s 6 unlockable balls (the balls come with special properties, like the ‘sticky ball’, ‘ice ball’ and ‘super ball’), game center leaderboards and Read More

Great game, simply love it. Would have preferred the original power meter as opposed to the speedometer style, the indicator lines on it are nice as well, and maybe shade it to red as it gets stronger.
Beautifully executed sequel

The best aspect I like so far is that this game has all the courses from the previous game on top of the new ones. The only downside I'm experiencing is with the physics change. I was used to the older physics of the game. Now I'm making lots of bogeys because I'm not used to the new ball flights. Nothing a little practice wouldn't fix.
Good game

If you've played the first one you know how great of a game this is. Love the new UI, course selection and power-ups. I'm really looking forward the multiplayer as well. The only con: The music gets annoying quickly. Please add ipod support and this game will be perfect.
So close yet again.

Once again I have to give a Stick Golf game one star. I absolutely love this game but having to unlock things in a mobile phone casual game is ridiculous and gimmicky. It's just a developers trick to extend the game length. This is a casual game, not a console release. Also the putting mechanic has completely changed from the original, for the worse, sadly.
Perfect Timing!

I was just wondering when the next update for this was coming out and BAM!.. here it is. Truly a great game. Glad to see the extension of play with new balls & clubs. Fan for life.
Better Soundtrack Please?
Super Dave Osbourne 4.0 stars
I don't know who wrote the music for this game, but it could be way better, especially when they advertise it in the app store with a "full soundtrack." Otherwise the game is pretty fun, for the time being I'll just listen to my music since I don't feel like listening to Nintendo 8 bit music lol.
Great, but Missing One Thing
