TomTom GPS Now Available in the App Store
Calendar16 Mon, 17 Aug 2009 15:00:35 UTC +00:00
Well, it’s not the first turn-by-turn GPS navigation application in the App Store, but industry heavyweight TomTom has finally pushed out its entry. It became available late Sunday night, with versions for Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe and North America. In my opinion, TomTom is a little over the top in its app description write-up, proclaiming, “Turn-by-turn car navigation for the iPhone is here.” Well, in fact, it’s also here, and here and here (all iTunes links). It might not have beat everyone out of the gate, but I suppose this is TomTom we’re talking about, and none of its rivals have quite as much brand power. A couple caveats before you go rushing out to buy the new app. First, it’s a bit on the expensive side. $99.99 for the U.S. and Canada edition (iTunes link), for example, and $149.99 for Western Europe (iTunes link). Also, New Zealand (iTunes link) Read More

Kind of a let-down...:-(
Tunnelrunner 2.0 stars Version: 7.71
Sygic North America ($79.99 one-time fee....yearly upgrades price TBA?): POSITIVES: +Beautiful graphics, smooth scrolling. +Good, loud (and sharp) voice quality. I couldn't stand the obnoxious (almost shouting) male voice used for the US ("Lucien"), so I switched to the UK/British male voice "Simon." Much smoother, calmer, and soothing to listen to. Overall, much easier on the ears. :-) +Landscape mode is gorgeous. +Recalculates fairly quickly if you miss a turn. +Very customizable. You can choose from a variety of different voices (male, female) speaking different languages, route preview videos (customizable playing speed), etc. Lots of options...sometimes, I think TOO many options... +Since the maps are pre-loaded on the phone (vs. streamed in realtime like Telenav), it's less of a drain on battery, AND you don't need a data signal to use it (just GPS). FYI, it took me 2 hours to download the app and another half an hour to install it onto my iphone and back it up. That's the tradeoff of having maps on your phone. NEGATIVES: -The flip-side: you don't get real-time traffic/congestion data and maps can become outdated if you don't choose to update (as any one-time pre-loaded GPS app goes). -Kind of a confusing menu/UI. Not intuitive, IMO. If you think G-Map's data input was complicated, you haven't seen anything yet. -Yet another iphone GPS app that forgets about contacts integration (come on, guys, you've had how many months to get this together?). -No integration with the ipod app. At the present time, you cannot play music while navigating. Disappointing. -Has only "partial text-to-speech (TTS)." It only says the name of *major* highways, and does not say the name of any streets or roads. How spoiled I've become with the text-to-speech feature of AT&T Navigator by Telenav (ATTN). As I've said before, TTS is IMHO, a *vital* feature for the GPS systems of today. It's one extra safety precaution, so you don't have to take your eyes off the road when the GPS tells you the name of the streets/roads, etc. -I didn't always like the "timing" of the voice prompts. Sometimes, it seemed like the cues to turn came a little late (like within 10 feet of the turn). Not good, when you don't even know what street name to turn onto. -I could even overlook the lack of TTS and the poor voice prompting if they would have at least displayed the NAME of the next street you turn to. Yes, that's right: it doesn't display the name of the next road in the route until you actually turn ONTO it (- I've been playing around with the controls, but I haven't seen a way to fix this setting YET... ). This is perhaps, the biggest flaw of the app. If you're not going to say the street names, then at least display the overhead name of the next road in the route. The things we take for granted in GPS apps...isn't this standard with any type of nav. system? I have *never* seen a GPS app that didn't have such a basic feature. -The routes calculated weren't the most accurate or smart of all the apps I've tested. G-Map, Gokivo, ATTN, Google Maps all came up with routes which were more efficient and logical. OVERALL: For as long as we've waited for Sygic, this was kind of a disappointment. Underneath the pretty exterior, it's missing some fairly basic features. I have to give it 2/5 stars.
Good so far
Joshuadjohnson22 4.0 stars Version: 7.71
I love the GUI. I hope it gets faster with the finding signal, I don't know if that's the iPhones problem or the app. But AT&T nav was much faster with locations. I hope to see if it's as accurate as AT&T navigator with addresses, I know tomtom isn't. But over all worth the money. Just if u can please work on above thanks!

Waz41 4.0 stars Version: 7.71
I have been waiting for this type of App for a while so instead of waiting it out for the reviews I went for it. I was not at all happy with AT&T s $9.99 fee or Tom Tom's never coming out App with an equipment purchase
Pretty Basic Feature Missing

This is a pretty good app, but needs some work.
zouklover 3.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
This is a pretty good app! I have just downloaded the latest upgrade and was pleased to see that the app now allows the iPod App to continue to play in the background. Turn by turn directions worked well for me. The app keeps track of my progress and successfully re-calculates when I make a mistake. Having said this, a number of things need to be fixed/improved in order to justify the $80 price and make this a great App:
Very Nice GPS App
MikeMpls 5.0 stars Version: 7.71
Just bought this application this morning - installed on my 3GS - took about 30 minutes to download and complete the install on wi-fi directly to the phone.
Why all the hate?
pkahleeb 5.0 stars Version: 7.71
The Sygic Mobile Maps for NA may not be the perfect GPS application. I have been a user of many standalone GPS units like Garmin, Mio, Dash, etc. Everything has pros and cons. For example, the Garmin's traffic was flaky, the voices unable to hear, and software updates costly. The Mio has been complete trash overall and the Dash went bankrupt.
Need to Fix ASAP!
Me LC 3.0 stars Version: 7.71
This app is great and has beatuiful graphics but:
Not bad but...
Gypsy Thor 3.0 stars Version: 7.71
Well after a long dl and even longer install I was ready to give sygic a work out. I live in a tricky neighbor hood and sygic got me there without a hitch. The speed was pretty accurate and so were the voice prompts. The only problem I have is that the app doesn't find any gas stations from work to home along a 53 mile route so where do I stop for gas lol. Will give it another work out over the next couple of days and see what happens with the update, but with gas stations not showing up and me on a motorcycle I might have to pass on this app
Works good for routes
Id_country_dweller 2.0 stars Version: 7.71
The routes are fine, voice is fine, but the poi categories and poi list generated are bad. No restaurants, no gas stations, not much at all. Fix that problem and it will get at least 4 stars.
No Restaurants
Brixon 1.0 stars Version: 7.71
\i just bought the application a couple of days ago. The only problem it has is that it does not have restaurants as Points of Interest. Therefore you cannot navigate to one which is in my opinion quiet essential
It doesnt work!
Pegazzo_9 1.0 stars Version: 7.71
I just got this app and it just says that is waiting for signal.
Missing?
TheOrioles33 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
So where the heck are restaurants under POI?!!!!
This is the best from what's available for iPhone.
An543647@& 5.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
If they continue to be responsive as they are, it will make the rest obsolete. There are millions of iphone owners and iPhone owners are big spenders and want the top of the line product. I' am happy with the purchase. This product needs to be updated taking account of all constructive comments before Tomtom is out.
Good enough for me to get rid of my stand-alone GPS unit!
macgirl.net 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
Overall, I'm very happy with this app. It's not perfect, but it does exactly what I need it to do. I always have my iPhone 3GS with me and this app makes my TomTom Go 720 GPS unit completely unnecessary. I'd like to see a few things in the next version, including contacts integration and some interface tweaks to fully utilize the iPhone's touch interface and standard gestures.
Still too many problems, requesting a refund
Bbplayer 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
They finally fixed the POIs, but the search for address is busted severely. You cant search for an address that is in a township of a city. Searching the main city for the address will yield NOTHING.
Delete Favorite doesn't work !
JSA123 2.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
Not only does the call poi function not work, but I also discovered today that since the update, under "manage POI" -- delete favorite does not work. It tells me that "favorite deleted", however it still remains as a favorite. At this point I am changing my rating from 3 stars to 2 stars, giving up on this app and am waiting for IGO MY WAY to be released.
Great App!!!
dltang 5.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
I just downloaded this program last night. This is fantastic!!. It does everything I need it to do in a GPS and even a bit more. I really like that when I take a route different than the suggested route it doesn't contantly nag me to make a U-turn or tell me it is recalculating. It just makes the recalculation and then goes back to giving me the correct directions to get to my destination. I haven't used it for any long trips yet, obviously but it is faster than my Lowrance XOG and appears to be every bit as accurate as my husbands Garmin. I use this when I am out riding on my motorcycle and now I only have to have one gadget for everything, I highly recommend this program. Especially for this price, I don't see how you can go wrong.
Loss of Capability. Never Ever remove delivered capability.
Northern VA 2.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
First rule; Never Ever remove delivered capability. The English female voices are missing. Lots of cities are no longer available when adding custom POI or Favorites. When adding a POI or Favorite; does not allow ability to add phone number. At a minimum, should be able to add a Title, Address, and Phone Number of a custom POI or Favorite. Suggested improvements; ability to adjust the delta point position on the map for custom POI or Favorite; when located at that position physically (calibration function to fine tune the delta to correct position and direction pointing). Add back the female voices from previous version. Add back the cities from previous version. Other functional observations; voice guidance at times will stop working; need to reboot app to get voice back. Data on some screens under advance settings not readable appears text box not large enough to display complete characters. Navigation appears to work adequate, maps are not the most up to date so best route is not always displayed. Version 7.71 in my opinion was a much better release than this one. I see little to no functional improvements and a significant loss in delivered capability. One more time; add back the female voices, add back the cities, and improve custom POI and Favorites profiles. Get the phone calling function working.
2nd Review For Update.
DMambo 3.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
Thank you Sygic for taking our feedback into consideration. App feels snappier and I appreciate having some actual POI's now. There are still two major issues that need to be addressed before we can actually rely on your app to use in the real world.
Very disappointing
whydidnt 1.0 stars Version: 7.71
I was excited to see a turn-by-turn app with full US Maps included. I am not not interested in any GPS app dependent on the cellular network for maps. For fun I mapped a route to the MSP airport from my house. Imagine my surprise when the application failed to idenitfy by name 4 MAJOR highways on the way. Going from Highway 252 to Interstate 94 shows an arrow and "N/A". At least the exit from 94 to 35W includes the exit number, but again has N/A for the Road name. Traveling along, the same holds true getting on Highway 62, and finally the exit to Highway leading to the airport, 5, is also identified as N/A. How can it be that hard to identify the major interstates and highways? While I know you can follow the routes while driving, it is will be extremely hard to envision using this application in a strange area, since it doesn't identify by name the major highways. I feel completely ripped off, spending as much as I did for this application -- pointing out a major flaw in the app store, with no way to try before buying an application such as this.
Functional, it will get you there...
Tiz59 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
I ran a test around town today after downloading this app, and it worked great. GPS was up before I left my driveway, and it correctly got me to several POI's. (I have an IPhone 3G) No, it isn't as fluid and feature rich as my stand alone GPS unit, (Navigon 5300max) but more than adequate for finding your way. I travel frequently and I always have my IPhone with me, so convenience is what I'm looking for. US, Canada, and Mexico maps plus POI's, road speed (nice to have if you are unfamiliar with the road), and upcoming highway signs all in one unit are well worth $80 to me...
Much Improved After Update!!
EvenStephen2000 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
I'm not sure what the whiners (a couple in particular, it's not hard to find them) are talking about. Unless you're in a steel-padded basement, it gets a signal just fine and it re-routes pretty quickly in my experience. In fact, I purposely took some different turns to test that out and it quickly re-routed me correctly. I haven't tried every POI but the few I've looked for were found, when they weren't there previously. My biggest complaint in my first review was the POI issue and they have improved that. I do hope they continue to monitor that, though They seem very customer-oriented and listen to our feedback so I feel confident that they will keep improving as they can. I agree that $80 is a lot of money, especially in today's economy. But this is a turn-by-turn, voice guided GPS on your phone! It's not an app created in someone's basement! I think it takes some time to get used to it, so if you buy this, or any huge app, plan on it taking a bit to learn. I'm glad I bought it. I also have X-Road and like that app as well. Although, I like the potential that this one has because it feels just like your standard GPS and everything is in one app.
Missing one thing for the fifth star
Raziel1984 4.0 stars Version: 7.71
The layout the features and straight-forward are easy to use. However, add the ability to search through my contacts when prompted (e.g. when you select "Navigate to..." have "Contacts" or "Search" on the next screen) and you'll get the fifth star. Trying it real time today and all I have to say is, so far so good. Also, for those of you who aren't aware how GPS software works, apps like these require maps to be downloaded to the phone which has it's up's and down's (pro - maps are there unconditionally; con - takes about 1.5GB). Since I have a 16GB and have yet to fill it, this is no issue for me, but just letting others be aware so they don't wonder where all the free space went LOL
some flaws but overall works good
wazuri77 4.0 stars Version: 7.71
The application worked relatively well when i used it going to Los Angeles from the Bay Area. However, I noticed the route wasn't the easiest and fastest (compare to the google map printout) when I made it to the LA area. I also got lost trying to find my hotel. The voice prompts were several seconds late and I would pass up streets etc and had to backtrack. Also, the rerouting wasn't the quickest. The unit also takes forever to lock on to your location initially. I'm sure this could be due to the GPS chipset in the iPhone 3G. The graphics are real good etc.
Good and bad at the same time
Chihuahua70 1.0 stars Version: 7.71
The app does what the description says. It works and it works fine, the thing is, the UI is non-intuitive and non-iphone like. Instead of scrolling for options you click on up and down arrows, if you go 2 items deep (menu and sub menu) and then click back you don't go to the previous menu, it takes you back to the navigation map, so if you make a mistake and just want to go back to the previous menu... you're out of luck and have to start over again. iPod playback works if you start it before opening the app, but unlike AT&T navigator, in Sygic, the playback stops with the first voice-prompt and never comes back... MAJOR letdown. Another difference with Navigator is that you cannot open the ipod controls with a home button double click to go to the next song or go back to the previous. I know this is important for a lot of people and I'm one of them. The POI is either outdated or incomplete because like another reviewer said, you can't even find a McDonald's, Fire Station is listed as "Fire Brigade" (probably because it's a European product) and the UI makes it very "unnatural" to search for stuff. I have $80 invested in this software. Hopefully they take all these comments into consideration.
Excellent App!!
Sentalia 5.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
I bought this app and tried it out for the first time today. Excellent! Great graphics. Fast response and updating of route information. The voice instructions were clear with the option to select from several voices and languages. The GPS signal lock was very fast. Usually only a few seconds with my iPhone 3G. The only downer was the amount of memory needed to install. I needed to free up about 3.5GB of space before the app would download to the phone even though the app consumes about 1.6GB. But, afterwards I reclaimed the space and put my music/videos back. This app is well worth the $79. I travel a lot and usually rent a Garmin from Avis for $15 per day. Now, I can use my iPhone!
I was the first few to buy this

Need to Fix ASAP!
Me LC 2.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
This app is great and has beatuiful graphics but: NEEDS!!!: -the maps are at least 4-5 years OLD, too old to be sold as a first release they need to be updated for free ASAP!! ( not cool if you give us old maps and charge for updates to maps). -GPS accuraccy needs to be improved. -slightly larger street names or street u are currently on ( i do not wear glasses and have 20/20 vision ) -more logical re-routing instead of just telling it to do a U-turn and follow old calculated route (even when U turns are set to be avoided). -search bar for POI. -way more POIs, there are nearly no POIs in this app. -fix gps singnal reception bars,it's always 2 bars. -address accuracy,I typed in a well known address and it over shot the actual address by 300 yards - the app crashes sometimes please fix this ASAP Wants: -full ipod intergration using the new API to have a ipod menu integrated into your app, no one has used this APl, please lead and don't follow. -Brand Label icons on maps, when viewing the map for instance you would see a starbucks symbol on map when passing a starbucks on route or off to the the side, or see a wells fargo atm and it shows you the wells fargo label, more helpful than it sounds, navigon does a great job of this . - Text To Speech PLEASE, it is the safest for nav apps. -3D view of complicaticated intersection off ramps and interstate on ramps -faster start up - agree to terms and conditions once not evertime i open app -sexy female voice for turn by turn instead of semi aggresive man voice. -copy paste integration Good start for first version publicly released. Things i like: -True turn by turn directions -great graphics -loud voice, yes even for weak speaker on the 3G -Auto Zoom is a very nice feature. -iphone screen optimization, this app uses every inch of 3.5 inch iphone screen making the iphone look like a true navigaion unit with large beatuful maps when app is running -optional auto dim feature or always on, some nav apps do not disable the screen lock feature on iphone and in the middle of a route will lock the screen this allows u to control that feature. (update 7/30/09) - Routing algorithim is retarded. -Maps are way too OLD these flaws are major and they contribute to each other, if the maps are old the routing is old. This needs to be fixed immediately. Sygic has beatiful graphics but until the bugs listed are fixed this app is almost unusable and very unreliable to be used for directions.
Not ready for prime Time
Pauld613 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
Was on my way to the Eye Doctor that was driven to many times by me. The software wanted me to go north 1 exit on I95 and then head south on another road. The closet and the best way to go was to Drive straight on Woolbright Road in Boynton Beach, Florida and arrive at the destination. Not good. It also took me to home depot on a dead end street when it was really across the highway to the right. Very disappointing.
No copy and paste

Just as good as a stand alone gps
Tibbs8119 5.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
The Sygic app is just as good as my stand alone gps unit and the best part is that I always have my iPhone in my pocket so I never get lost anymore. The voices are loud and clear and if you miss a turn it quickly recalculates the directions. Worth every penny!
The most accurate maps available
Mr. Rogers1 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
Besides Sygic, I have purchased Gokivo, AT&T, Navigon, "i go", and TomTom . After many hours of testing each app, I have concluded that Sygic has the most consistent maps available. tomtom comes in second.
Update
motran 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.2
App is quite promising with the new update waiting for review. When will the update be available? As for the current version, it works but the Maps are way too old. Any attempt to use it for destinations in rather new neighborhoods in TN, TX and MI failed because maps are just "blanks". That is where I need directions, on highways I can make it without GPS. Because the maps are so poor, I cannot judge the routing accuracy. However, in many instances it took way too long to figure out that I changed the route. The app will continue to try to re route me to the original route. If I choose in settings to avoid Toll Roads, and then I decided to take the toll road, apps will never figure out of my decision. It will just continue to try to take me off toll road and route back to the original route, eventually increasing the time to destination to 1 hour. I had to cancel the route, go to setting and change to allow on toll roads and set a new route. Doing that in traffic is too risky. I cannot wait to see the promised update.
Very Good

Excellent Application, No Need For Dedicated Unit.
Still not there
Pepe.Castillo 2.0 stars Version: 7.71.4
I bought this instead of buying a GPS for Mexico. It really doesn't work as it should. The numbers are wrong and the route it gives me is way longer than some I do know. The application clearly looks laggy in my iPhone 3G and I really wish it had ipod controls as well as better mexico maps. Yahoo maps work way better and do have the address numbers correctly. It's not a bad product but it clearly needs a lot of work, and I hope they fix the numbers for free and not as a map upgrade in the future...
Great GPS Navigator gone bad
bgg71 3.0 stars Version: 7.71.4
If you compare with TomTom the graphics look pretty similar and Sygic has a lot more features: lane assist, full north america maps by Telenav which even have the driveways in my apt complex. No other GPS I tried has them, including Garmin 760. All NAVTEQ maps stop at the main street. It is very customizable, including the 4 pieces of info displayed regarding ETA. It is more customizable than Navigon. With TTS and integrated contacts just added. However, unlike Navigon which works as advertised sygic can't recognize most of my contacts' addresses. It doesn't control the ipod and it doesn't have traffic updates yet. Hopefully these features will be added in the future as well as in-app map updates. Still can't find the gas station near me. This version with TTS gives me wrong directions. It keeps saying to take the exit left when it clearly shows the exit on the right. Then says to keep right on i210 i210 (twice i210 without specifying E, W, San Bernardino or Pasadena as Navigon does). I was going to buy the European version as well but after this upgrade I don't think so. I better pay for something that works. It has lots of things going for it as I mentioned above. However, it was rushed to market and it shows. Dropped two stars from previous version.
