GPS Summary – Comparison of all iPhone GPS applications
Calendar16 Sat, 26 Sep 2009 16:35:28 UTC +00:00
Last week, I worked my way through all of the currently available iPhone on-board GPS applications. I stuck with just the applications that held all of the maps on-board — meaning that you didn’t need to have a network connection to use the maps or routing. CoPilot came out as our winner as it has the best features, though some very confusing, for it’s price. But we thought it would be a good idea to do a re-cap and compare all 5 of the GPS I looked at last week and include the first iPhone GPS application, G-Map. Odds and Ends Click, Ignore, Repeat Taking a look at some of the odds and ends, some of the things that you don’t usually think of when thinking about GPS applications, these features can really add to or detract from the value of a GPS application on the iPhone. One example, the annoying Read More

Video App Review: Sygic Mobile Maps GPS
Calendar16 Fri, 11 Sep 2009 04:10:06 UTC +00:00
Rating: 9 out of 10Pros: Sygic paid attention to detail in making the user interface look and feel just like a stand alone GPS unit.  Reasonably priced.  Very intuitive, easy to read menus. Lane assist is very useful especially in highly congested areas.Cons: The letters for when you are inputting destination information is a bit cramped and I missed the appropriate letter sometimes, home navigation screen has a lot of information but the data is a bit small to read comfortably while driving.Overall: A very solid application for GPS navigation on the iPhone.  If you have been a portable GPS unit user you will be very satisfied with the menu system and overall navigation.  I would like to see a few adjustments to the size of data displayed on the main navigation screen.  Sygic got me from point “A” to point “B” with no problems and the US Maps are reasonably Read More
If you haven’t heard, the iPhone now supports turn by turn navigation apps. These apps essentially turn your iPhone into one of those portable navigational devices which people refer to as “my navi” or “my GPS”. Overall, the apps are quite good. They work well, they look great, and having a turn by turn navigational system on your cell phone is highly convenient. The Palm Pre, unlike the iPhone which requires purchasing an app from the App Store, comes equipped with one of these apps, and it’s free with the Sprint service plan. The Pre’s app, “Telenav By Sprint”, is quite frankly the perfect turn by turn navigational app for a cell phone, and we compared the 5 most popular American navigational iPhone apps to the Pre app.  Look below for a detailed table comparing the applications on 20 different parameters. Note: For these applications you will 100% need a car charger Read More

Sygic
Cubs are awsome 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
The sygic is a prety cool gps and its seems to work ok and i like the fact that its worns you if you pass the speed limit otherwise prety good and close on being accurate i do recommend it
poi's need help...
sid3ffect 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
gps lock is solid... loads much faster than navigon... UI is very similar to that of a tomtom... speach is clear and routes are good... can't find poi's like best buy and target (two HUGE store chains, c'mon!) and doesn't want to save favorites (??)... all around good app
WTF!!! Cant even download it!
imnothing33 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
Paid my $60, tried DLing on phone, tried DLing thru iTunes. I got nothing!! So as of right now I give 1 star. Would give 0 if it was an option. When it actually makes it to my phone i'll let you know about the App itself...
Once it got in my phone...
imnothing33 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
Not half bad... Slows up sometimes and when you're in heavy traffic it's difficult to know which lane to be in until it's too late. On interstate it tells me to keep straight every 900 yards, and spells out the highway everytime, slightly annoying. BUT it gets me where I need to go and over all is a decent app.
Wait for better Nav apps Horrible
Bwfeldy 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
This app has a great graphical interface, and that's about it. First of all, It takes forever to lock onto GPS signal outside with clear blue skies. Secondly, It won't even find my home address, how crazy is that! I want my money back. This is my first high priced app and this puts a damper on my buying them again in the future. There should be a trial for these high priced applications. Instead, you spend money and they don't work. Oh by the way I tried to navigate to the grocery store and it was so far behind, I would have passed store if I didn't know that it was already there on the right!!!! Horrible experience. I want a refund!!
This app is a disappointment
M.Kaufmann. 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
This app does not work and is a complete waste of money. GPS lock is poor at best and if you're lucky enough to hold a signal this program will frequently run 2-3 turns behind. I bought this app last week for a trip from NC to Maine and it was a complete failure. I will be looking for my money back.
Crap
Cottone69 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
It's crap, won't load. I really wanted to give it a shot, I better not get charged for this garbage app that didn't load!!!!!
Works okay but,
Partner_mark 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
Seem to work okay but, I can't seem to get the favorites to save. The GPS lock is a bit loose as well.
Dont waste your money Buyer Beware
MikeMacOSX 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
Dont waste your money. I was looking for a GPS alternative while on the go and decided to give Sygic a try. I liked the look of the UI from the screen shots and even though the prior reviews were bad I figured how bad could it be. Well it's bad and I now want my money back. I'm usually not so critical but this application simply does not work as described. The main issue is that Sygic does not lock on to GPS very well. I'm sure that they will be fixed this eventually with a future update but why would Sygic release a GPS application if it wasn't 100 percent. I following the directions from Sygic support sent me and I'm still having problems. I used a window mount, reset my phone, you name it I tryied with no resolve. 1)I'm on highways and it's telling me to make Uturns. The map is all over the place. I'm clearly on a highway and it's showing me on streets that I'm not on. At times it's routing me on the wrong side of the highway as if I'm in europe. Im really fustrated at this point and if your reading this wait until the update hits and then try. I should of listened to the prior reviews but thought prior users were not giving it a chance. 2)Also why does this app spell street names with voice guidence. Im on the Southern State Parkway and it directs me one letter at a time instead of just saying the name. That's so annoying. 3)The speed limit display is in European standards not US. Why? Bottom line this app is not ready for prime time until an update corrects the GPS lock. Sygic if your listening you need to act on this right away. Push apple to get the update out to fustrated customers.
didn't work
barryishnikov 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
Bought this a few weeks back and finally put it to the test for a 40 mile drive downtown yesterday. The app plotted a course which was completely wrong (yes, I double-checked the address). If I had listened to the turn by turn instructions, I would have wound up in Timbuktu. As I was driving, it told me to stay left when I should have stayed right. It had me exit an interstate only to get back on the interstate at the next available on ramp. And by the time it told me to turn, I was already past the turn in many cases. If this were 1.99, I wouldn't care. But for the price I paid, I really wish I could get my money back.
Not bad
WCC nerd 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
One of the only things that seem to be missing is the ability to play music in the background through your ipod. other than that, it works pretty well.
Not ready for prime time needs update

the good and the bad for the first time out
ty0985 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
i just downloaded this app and for the first time out at least for me im happy i was going for the navigon us app but i think i just save about $30.00 my gps signal lock on in the matter of seconds and was ready for me or at least i think i could of moved and it would have followed me but like i said it the first time out so i waited for it to get street level and back out my drive way
Pretty solid.
Machetti 5.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
It worked pretty good for me. Great UI. Lots of features. Feels like a real gps. Just wish they incorporate more iPhone native features like swipe jestures and also playing music in background. All in all great app. Needs upgrade.
it crashes at every state borde.
JasonFV 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
1) it crashes every time you cross state lines. 2) it tries sending you the wrong way down divided highways. 3) It's navigation was useless for 90% of our trip from NC to MA. 4) i wouldn't pay $5 for it.
So far so good can't wait for the update!
Outcome 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
The things missing are the things coming. Drove accross Texas with it. No interaction needed if you miss a turn it will adjust automatically which is great. Really great customization options including ETA and Miles to go. You should default to the third or fourth sound for the speed warning though, it defaults to an annoying sound. Any way that's if you turn the option on.
Works Great
Bubbatude 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
I don't know why there are so many bad reviews on this product. I have been waiting to buy a turn-by-turns app but when I saw the price others wanted I figured it would be cheaper to just go buy a stand alone unit. Then I found this one on sale for 40 bucks. I was very hesitant due to the negative reviews but decided to take my chances. It is WELL WORTH 40 bucks. It locks on pretty fast and gave perfect directions. I took it on a 50 mile trip and had no problems. It needs better touch controls. I had no problem saving favorites as others have mentioned. For the price it is a great app and I am glad I didn't shell out another 30 or 60 bucks. I use to use the Verizon VZ Navigator and really liked it. This compares well to it and in many ways it is better. The automatic reroute and the ability to have it reroute you to avoid construction is great. I love the fact that it doesn't tell me to "take the next legal u-turn" if I don't take a turn it wants me to. Again, I don't understand the problems others are having. I purchased mine on 8-18 and didn't experience any other the other issues mentioned in the reviews.
Rather indifferent
jonesmf 3.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
I must admit that I am a little disappointed with the fact that the application doesn't recognize my street, even though I was able to exactly plot it via the program map. The only problem there is, I don't always know exactly where to look for addresses I am trying to find!! I was also extremely disappointed after looking at several of the apps to find out that I picked the one that DOESN'T work with your contacts list. Please, please, please also use the UI that we are all used to on the iPhone and not this poor substitute.
New updates don't work
Need to Dial plus sign first 2.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
New updates don't work on my phone. Contacts don't have any kind of option to sygic. Amongest other issues.
The Tele Atlas based maps used in this map is superior in my area
Lao_er 5.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
I found this app had the same limitations as all the other competing navigation apps ( I've tried Navigon, CoPilot, and G-Map ). Basically, when the phone was mounted via a vent mount, the GPS signal was not reliable. However, once I switched to a dashboard mount ( Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount for nüvi Series + Semsons iphone mount bracket ), GPS signal was not an issue. I'm convinced that this is a problem of the phone ( weak reception ), not the apps as the GPS signal problem was common to all GPS apps I tried so far.
Good start, needs work...
Guzziknight 3.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
Overall, I like this GPS a lot. 2 things bug me: 1. Everytime I start the app, the zoom level is all the way out. I end up having to zoom in to get the streets to show up. Wish it would save my zoom level. 2. Searching for addresses can be a pain, especially if it's on the border of 2 cities. I've had to sometimes search through 3-4 cities before it finds the address. Other than that, I like it. Waiting for text to speech and a few other small details, but I think it's a good start.
Solid GPS
LPON 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
This is a very solid GPS. It has a few missing features but these are also not available on other GPS apps. I spent about a week researching and reading reviews on TomTom, Navigon, CoPilot, IGo, Sygic, and GMap. I chose sygic over all of these because it has the major functions of all of these with one of the lowest price points. In general they all work the same. I did not choose Copilot because of it's lost route during a phone call (will be fixed though). GMap had too many missing features and the others were too highly priced. I did not want to pay $30 more for a better lane assist in Navigon and $60 for the TomTom name. I have taken this around Kansas and have had no issues with the app. Solid GPS with a good price.
Great GPS, needs more POI
Paladin252 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
This was a great purchase. Simple interface, quick gps lock, gets you there every time, but I have just a couple issues that keep it from perfect. Yes, it will route me to where I need to get, but if I want to take a different route, it is very reluctant to make a whole new route. It likes to make me u-turn over and over even when I have u-turn set to off. It also is missing quite a few POI, such as dunkin donuts which are on every corner here and it couldn't find panera bread in my area. But overall, well worth the money to keep a second device out of my pocket while travelling.
Great app
Fbookm 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
I reallynliked this app. It has a great ui interface. For the most part the app works great and I like it over my other gps. It does get lost at times butnit does recover quickly. In the update I would like to see announcements of street names as well as a better turn by turn navigation. Some exits need to be adjusted. Saying wrong names is not cool. Inwoild also like for the inserting of addresses to be more user friendly. This really is a great app and I would totally recommend it to anyone.
Missing a few features but still solid for 39.99
GiantsNinersWarriors 3.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
It gets you from A to Z consistently which is the whole point of this app. However I'd like to see the following, 1. Text to speech 2. Flick scrolling within the UI 3. Being able to find POI's by typing in the name, rather than searching thru categories. I typed in Best Buy and it wouldn't find it. 4. Contacts intergration 5. More voice options. I believe most of these features are coming in the next update and when that happens this app will be great. Right now it's just pretty good. I'll prolly stick to me AT&T Navigator since it has Text to speech, Contacts intergration, and live traffic updates. FYI: Using iPhone 3G in LA
Accurate, Easy to use, good value
Datamonger 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
I found LPON's review quite helpful, and I, too, explored Navigon, TomTom, and Co-pilot reviews on several websites. I had been using ATT NAV but found it too slow in updating for complex city routes. Plus, there's that $10.00 monthly fee added to an already considerable mobile phone bill. HERE'S MY RESPONSE TO THIS APP'S FEATURES: *****Maps are clear, update quickly, and provide reasonable routing with several ways to customize. In one situation so far, what I thought was an erroneous routing turned out to be correct. Had I not used the GPS and followed what I THOUGHT was the correct route, I would have gone far out of my way. ****Nice display, customizable, and useful in both landscape and portrait mode.. You choose the info you want to see. Only option missing is compass heading. When that's available, I'll be happy to give this app five stars. *****Itineraries can be saved, modified, and reused.. *****Voice quality clear and loud. Many languages to choose from. *****Keeps navigating during a phone call. *****Acquires GPS signal within seconds. Faster than any other GPS I used. *****EXCELLENT Points of Interest database, again, customizable. I found that my favorite place to eat breakfast had a location right nearby when I was traveling. Kind of made my day! *****Nice extra features including quick, useful tutorials, country guides, and unit conversion info. *****Easy set up, although it did, because of the amount of data, take quite a while. DO BE AWARE THAT YOU'LL NEED ABOUT A HALF HOUR, PERHAPS EVEN A BIT LONGER DEPENDING ON YOUR WIFI CONNECTION, TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS APP. >>I'd love to have been able to do a personal comparison of this app with Navigon and TomTom. I do wish a trial, even a very limited one, could be made available.<<
Needs lots of work
hansjim 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
Lots of problems with this app: 1) i've been living on the same street In a busy suburb of baltimore for 18 years and my street address doesn't show up in the database though it shows up on the map. Puzzling? How Do you find homes if alot of streets are missing that have been around for 20 years??? Update : I found my street in the database. It is actually listed in a neighboring town that I don't live in ! About 5 miles from the town I really live in . I guess if you can't find a street check a town next to that . You should be able to check the entire state fir the street but you can't . You have to go by Town . This issue makes thus app non- Functional . 2) gps lock goes in and out and is not consistent 3) your position displayed on the map Is often behind where you really are causing you to miss turns when your driving at normal speeds. 4) in same location with same weather Conditions gps lock is sometimes fast And sometimes very slow . 5) can't type in a point of interest . This is a real pain must scroll through lists Very time consuming if you don't have the address I find myself going to google maps to get the address and then type into sygic . I could go on . Not recommended but Maybe future updates will address these issues.
So Far So Good!
Coairman 4.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
This is my 3rd Gps application. I am using my Palm Treo Tom Tom window mount. It fits perfectly. I am glad I didn't sell it on Ebay as previously planned. The Treo Gps system was terrible and rarely picked up a signal. Downloaded and easily installed within an hour. I am not sure why people complain about the time it takes to download a 1.6gb file. No big deal. Installed easily and booted up with a gps signal within 15 seconds. Every time I start the app it aquires a gps signal within 10 seconds. I am not sure why many others are having signal problems. Not me at all running a 16gb GS in NE Ohio. Today was my first run in the car. I am pretty impressed with all the detail, graphics, POI Database, loud voice, speed sensor, easy to learn, automatic reroute and customization controls. The price of $39.99 is a deal! Much better value than Tom Tom and Navagon! Excellent! A Couple Mistakes in the database: 1) An exit number announced was incorrect. It announced to take exit 160 when it actually was 260. Off by an even 100. Maybe ODOT changed the exit number within a year or so. Not sure. 2) A new road opened up last spring and does not show on the current map. It is an important 3-4 mile extension that links 2 major interstates ( I-480 to I -90) and was approx 20-30 years in planing due to political resistence. I hope it gets updated soon. Other than the above issues I would give it 4.5 stars with the new update to arrive shortly. The biggest improvements are Text To Speech and Iphone Contacts intrigration. Huge improvements. I am currently very satisfied and I do NOT work for Sygic.
Not a good app
Jcan168 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
If you are looking for an nav app for your iphone, I am afraid you might need to just get the Navigon or Tom Tom, I know, they are expensive, but they work. This application is not that bad, except for the fact that will tell you every 3 secs, keep right, keep straigh ahead, keed left, turn right, in 1 mile turn left, in 500 yards turn left, in 100 yards turn left, in 50 yards turn left, (well you get the point), annoying. Also I think I can kind of leave with it, what I cannot accept is the fact that I have to turn right and the stupid voice will tell me I need to turn left. This is not good. I am trying to find a way to get my money back.
Absolutely Awful
bestcase 1.0 stars Version: 7.71.1
Just downloaded and installed this app today thinking I'd save a few bucks versus Navigon, TomTom, etc...and since I already have a top end Garmin and just wanted something as a backup on the iPhone 3GS 32GB. Big mistake. Used Sygic to try to navigate back from JFK to N.NJ (a simple and logical route) this evening, and all I can say is thank goodness that I actually know the route options quite well. If I didn't, this could have easily sent me on irrational tangents for hours. The thing was suggesting making "sharp right turns" or "sharp left turns" in the middle of the expressway - repeatedly, then commanding that I "take the next exit" and get lost on some side streets rather than continuing on the freeway (with settings to accept tolls and to take the fastest route) and spending minutes rerouting when I did not heed its misguided directions. On top of this, it rebooted twice in the middle of the route. You should absolutely save your money and buy something - anything - else. This is worthless for the purpose of navigation. I will never use it again, and if I could get my money back, I would...in an instant.
