A Year of Indies: The Very Best of Under The Radar
Calendar16 Fri, 27 Apr 2012 17:52:47 UTC +00:00
For over a year now, we've been bringing you weekly dispatches from an often unexplored side of the App Store-- independent games that don't have the budget or brands to stand out from the crowd. But these games are still worth your attention, and they're a lot better than a lot of App Store shovelware. Here are 20 top picks from over 200 indie games we've featured in the last year of Under The Radar articles, along with links to our full reviews. 20. Space Frontier "In this sci-fi sim game, you have to terraform small asteroids by building structures and managing your resources. You can also sell space real estate, hire an army of robot workers, and meet new alien species." -December 8, 2011 Our score: 2 out of 4 Our bottom line: Space Frontier lacks the polish to be an impressive game, and this style of building sim is Read More

A Collection of Sales and Freebies to Check Out
Calendar16 Wed, 26 Oct 2011 10:00:45 UTC +00:00
I'm not totally sure what the occasion is, but there sure does seem to be a ton of sales going on this week. Perhaps it's some pre-Halloween celebrating, or maybe developers have seen the number of new iPhones sold this month and want to capitalize on all of the potential new iOS gamers. Whatever the reason though, I don't think anyone will argue with getting some great deals on some new games. Without further ado, here's a list of some recent price drops and freebies from the past 24 hours: A couple of things about the list above. First of all, all the versions of the original Puzzle Quest games have been updated with iOS 5 support and visual enhancements (including Retina Display support), as well as have been tuned up in the way of bug fixes. Second, Tactical Soldier: Undead Rising is due to get a humongous update with a Read More
App Review: Tactical Soldier – Undead Rising

posted by Joe Rossignol on Monday, May 23, 2011 at 5:15 pm.   Chess was known as the board game of wars in the old days. Chess has been around for ages; it was even used for strategy and technique in actual battles. However, we don’t battle with knights and castles anymore. The world has advanced in technology, including weaponry and tactics. aims to recreate what Chess was once used for, except for modern times — at least that’s what it feels like. The game offers a strategic gameplay, great graphics, superb audio, little replay value, and a good bang for your buck. Catch the review after the break. This game is an action adventure, or at least that’s what the screen shots would tell you. However, it is only half of that. It is an adventure game, but action really isn’t the right word. Could it be action-packed? Yes. Is Read More
TUAW's Daily iOS App: Tactical Soldier Undead Rising
Calendar16 Wed, 04 May 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
Tactical Soldier has been garnering some acclaim on the App Store lately, and it's well deserved. It's a turn-based strategy game that's reminiscent of the old X-com series that combines a horror story with turn-based tactical gameplay, sending you to guide your team through a full campaign exploring a military base overrun by the walking dead. You'll use various weapons to take out zombies while trying to keep your forces in formation and lined up for attack. The game's fun, though it suffers from some of the usual tactical strategy problems, including a super sluggish pace at times. The interface is clean and easy to use, so the only headaches will come from having to wait around as some of the levels drag on. Even then, this is easy to recommend for anyone interested in tactical strategy experiences, especially since there are some fun upgrade systems and power-up items. Tactical Soldier Read More
Last week a little gem of a game was released into the App Store called Tactical Soldier - Undead Rising [$4.99]. Now, I know what you must be thinking, and yes the whole zombie thing has totally been done to death (undeath?). But the highly tactical turn-based gameplay in Tactical Soldier will have you forgetting all about that, and the zombie theme is actually used to great effect in telling an interesting story and creating tension in the game. You play as a soldier in a military base where an experiment has gone awfully wrong. Scientists have developed a chemical in an effort to create super soldiers, but instead it ends up turning them into bloodthirsty zombies. Yeah, it’s a bit cliché, but it fits the game well. The graphics are entirely rendered in 3D, and although the character models aren’t the most detailed, the environments have a wonderfully creepy mood Read More

Reviews

Not bad so far.

I may see this game somewhat unfairly after playing Hunters, because Hunters is in many ways superior. It does not move as well, does not look as nice, and does not feel as polished as Hunters. Further... 7 hours of story? I've dropped far more hours into Hunters, and it seems fair to compare since they both are tactical shooters. But, you can always own both! Tactical Soldier at least has a story, but it is *extremely* basic, or at least so far as I have seen. Zombies are almost always a plus. Moving around is easy, the skill upgrades are nice. Zooming and sliding the screen feel great, but trying to change the angle and rotation feel a bit off. With the framework in place, it sure seems like it would be super easy to add a whole lot more story.
Great game!

Ok if you like xcom or jagged alliance then you will like this. It isn't as advanced but it does have line of sight, hit percentages, overwatch, etc. It is a solid turn-based strategy. The enemy a.i. is dumb as zombies (duh) and the first level plays very slow, but this really fills a much-needed gap in the genre. Yes i know that there was another tbs i think called hunters released recently. This is far more polished, 3d, and has a story with comic-style interludes that moves it along. There are also a couple annoying Interface issues (like having to double tap actions so much instead of choosing "shoot bullets till my action pointa run out," but my guess is the devs will respond. Currently its 4 stars because of the shortcomings ive listed. In the future i hope they have humanoid opponents in a different game so more advanced strategy can be applied. Right now its just zombies, some splash zombies, and bosses that ive seen.
Fantastic!!!

This game is in the style of the old xcom games, and it lives up to the heritage. Little touches like opportunity fire and variable strength weapons really makes this an immersive experience! Well worth the $!
