Personalized search on a local level: That’s what mobile is all about. GrubHub takes this to heart, updating its Android app for better results to feed your appetite. If you’re working on the go, VMware and HomePipe offer some great virtualization tools to access files and manage your desktop when you’re away from the office. Living life in the fast lane has never been easier, with Android at the helm. Learn more about these titles and others in this edition of Android Apps of the Week. As an early GrubHub user, I was happy when the take-out restaurant search tool went mobile. You can save credit cards and past orders to speed up the process for the next go-round, and GrubHub’s made search even easier with full integration on Google’s standard search bar. Imagine my surprise when a drive that normally takes me 4 minutes took 20 thanks to the school buses suddenly on the road. It’s back to school time in my hometown, and millions of students across the country are gearing up, or already in gear, for it. Here are a few apps that Android-savvy students should download. They may not all be geared specifically for school, but they are apps that will help you on and off campus. Browse the apps and click the “Install” button to download them to your phone. Feel free to offer suggestions about other apps that students might enjoy. Thanks for the suggestion, Sean! Formerly known as SchoolDroid, A+ Homework is a way to track your course load. Users can create subjects/courses and then add new assignments with due dates. This is designed for the simplest needs for organizing assignments based on subject. If you want Read More
Computer giant Hewlett-Packard has acquired Melodeo, a Seattle-based start-up that specializes in music applications and services for mobile devices, the companies confirmed on Wednesday. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but an anonymous source told TechCrunch that the price was around $30 million. The acquisition vaults HP into the battle for mobile music services. Shown here, Melodeo's Nutsie for Android lets users access iTunes playlists on their mobile phone. HP has acquired the company, and now could bring the service to its WebOS mobile platform. I've written about Melodeo's products a couple of times, most recently in January, when I got a demo of a forthcoming update to Melodeo's Nutsie app for Android phones. Nutsie (the name is an anagram of iTunes) runs on several mobile platforms, and gives users a way to get music from the iTunes library on their computer to a mobile device over the air. Unfortunately, the Read More
In the wake of Google's acquisition and temporary burial of Simplify, Seattle-based HomePipe has launched a similar free service that lets users stream their full iTunes library over the air to their iPhone or Android phone. Music playback in HomePipe's iPhone app. This is the album "You Are Free" by Cat Power, but it's hard to tell--there's no album art or information shown in the app. HomePipe launched in March with a new take on remote computer access. While consumer services such as LogMeIn or corporate technologies like Microsoft's Remote Desktop Services offer full keyboard-video-mouse, or KVM, access to your computer, HomePipe reasoned that mobile-phone users mainly want their data--for example, to show pictures or read documents locked away on a home PC. On Thursday, HomePipe updated its service and the associated iPhone and Android clients to support music streaming from a user's home computer. To get set up, you have Read More
HomePipe App Streams iTunes to Your Android Phone
Calendar16 Thu, 03 Jun 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
HomePipe's a relatively new cloud-based storage app that's introduced a new twist: streaming your iTunes music from your Mac or PC to your Android phone. There are a couple of caveats, though. First, it's not as simple as downloading the app. You'll need a HomePipe account, which requires you to download some software onto your home computer. And we haven't had a chance to test it out for ourselves, so no guarantees on how smoothly the streaming happens. But it looks as though both the app and the service are free, so it might just be worth a shot—especially if your music collection is Frucci-sized. HomePipe is First to Stream Home iTunes Music to Google's Android HomePipe subscribers can now stream music or any audio file from their home music library, over 3G or WiFi to their browser, mobile device or phone anytime, anywhere SEATTLE, Wash, June 3, 2010 – HomePipe Read More

Brian 4.0 stars
This app works really well. Would be even better if it allowed streaming of music files.
Steve 3.0 stars
Cannot move files around on my Mac; frequently gets hung up on "listing" after downloading. Otherwise a useful app that would deserve 5 stars.
Jeffrey 5.0 stars
Amazing app. Works beautifully and fast with my dell. Gonna add Mac from home too. Just as I though I would lost touch with Idisk.
Keenan 4.0 stars
Would b 5 stars if it could stream media files, but I guess it's understandable for a free app since that would use a lot of bandwidth
Scuzzy19 5.0 stars
Awesome app I now have access to all of my files no matter where I go. I only wish it streamed media files instead of download them
Tom 4.0 stars
Pretty slick app. Works great on rooted MT3G running CE2. Lots of potential for roaming techs. Not sure where 'uploaded' files go yet.
Sievers 3.0 stars
Works great on WiFi. Needs to start caching files before the currently playing mp3 quits playing. Buffers a lot on 3g. Can't copy whole folders.

Pointless. So slow
Daedenn 3.0 stars
Seems convenient, but I don't use it often.

Paul 2.0 stars
Doesn't work! I tried using it to stream music and it just kept buffering. On wi-fi too!
Todd 5.0 stars
This app rocks. 1st make sure your pc has free resources. 2nd high bandwidth to your pc, 5mb's or higher. Mobile device needs strong signal. A+
Howie 1.0 stars
Large music folders take forever to appear. Frequently stops playing or doesn't work at all. Hoping Zumocast will be come to Android, this is crap.
TheOneAfter909 2.0 stars
Suckage. All I get is buffering.....
Rami 3.0 stars
It is one way sync, pc to phone. Phone files not managed from pc or Mac. Dropbox is one set of files accessible from Anywhere.
Michael Vandeven 2.0 stars
Folders often don't appear in list. Slow transfers. Ad covers up item at bottom of folder. Just map drive through Astro File Manager & b done with it.
Russell 4.0 stars
Great app. Better than iis setup. Would be 5 stars for faster transfer (about 40kb/s) and video player. But honestly can't complain for free.
D 5.0 stars
This app rules! Easy to set up. Was away on a business trip and had access to all my network files.
Kenneth 1.0 stars
Easy to use but practically impossible to use on cellular, and extremely slow on WiFi. I can get half way through a song and suddenly skips/buffering.

Abysmal Failure Installed the app, installed on my PC, set up an account, and lo and behold, I can't sign in from my PC. I can sign in from my tablet, but not my computer. Turns out the issue I'm experiencing has existed for just over a year, yet has somehow still not been resolved. Obviously poor support, therefore this app is not worth bothering with to me.
