10 AirPlay-Ready iPad Apps That Make Apple TV Worth It
Calendar16 Sat, 31 Mar 2012 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
When I first unboxed the new 1080p Apple TV and plugged it in, I wasn't blown away. Having used a Boxee Box for the last 16 months, I've come to expect flexibility and a broad selection of content sources from my streaming set-top boxes. In fact, after several minutes of playing around with it, I was tempted to box it back up and send it back. Then I tried AirPlay. Mirroring my iPad's display on the TV screen, I was suddenly able to not only stream any video I could find, but look at photos, browse the Web and view other apps on the big screen. If the Apple TV has a killer feature, this is it. Some of the device's biggest shortcomings - limited content, lack of a keyboard for text input, no Web browser - are instantly alleviated once you toggle that AirPlay switch. While you can technically beam Read More
New iPhone? Try these must-have free apps
Calendar16 Tue, 27 Dec 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
If you have that new iPhone you received for the holidays, you're probably looking to load it up with some apps that will enhance your mobile experience. Let me suggest some of the best of the free apps. Of course, everyone will have their own list, but here are my 5 favorites that I think most new iPhone users will love to use and to show off their new iPhone. If you're a news junkie, by all means get Zite, newly released for the iPhone. It sets you up with news categories of interest to you, then learns what you like by keeping track of stories you click on. Over time, it gets smarter and smarter, so in essence it creates a personalized magazine for you. Their are other news readers and aggregators, but the presentation of stories in Zite and its ability to learn make it my first choice. Glypmse Read More

TED Launches For iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Nov 2011 15:30:40 UTC +00:00
By Jennifer Allen on November 30th, 2011 Innovative ideas and concepts galore from these talks. Previously only available for the iPad, TED is now available for iPhone and the iPod touch courtesy of this new official app. TED, for those not already in the know, is a global collection of conferences that focus on new and innovative ideas. The app allows users to browse and watch TEDTalks, videos ranging from 3 minutes to 18 minutes in length, offering a great bitesized explanation of some very cool ideas from speakers on everything possible from genetics and geopolitics to sculpture and creativity. It’s a great way to learn about something new and get thinking. The iPhone app has been tailored specifically to the mobile user’s needs with the option to simply listen to TEDTalks rather than watch the videos. TED Radio also exists to stream curated audio 24/7, for whenever the user wants Read More
TED Goes Mobile with New iPhone App [IPhone Apps]
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Nov 2011 04:00:00 UTC +00:00
Sure the free TED app has been available on the iPad since last year but—gasp!—not everybody owns an iPad. Now, those of us without tablets can enjoy brilliant conversations on the go with the new TED iPhone app. The iPhone version has the same access to TED's library of lectures as its large-screen brethren and allows users to bookmark and download—via Wi-Fi—videos for playback. They can even be streamed to a home television using Airplay or listened to through TEDRadio, an audio-only version of the discussions. Its available free from iTunes. TED app goes universal, on iPhone now for free
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Nov 2011 05:00:00 UTC +00:00
TED's free iPad app has offered up quality videos and audio of the conference's famous guest speakers for a while, but the company recently updated the app to be universal. Now even while out and about on your iPhone, you can access some of the knowledge and wisdom being shared within the TED app. There's a new feature called TEDradio, too, which offers one-touch access to a continuous stream of TED talks. Just like the iPad version, you can either watch videos online or download them to watch offline (if, for example, you're headed for a long plane trip or something like that). There's even a feature called "Inspire Me" where you can set certain criteria for a talk (like the amount of time you've got or various subjects you want to hear about), then hit go to listen in. TED makes a solid app, and having it available for free Read More

iPad 2 Commercial – Learn
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Sep 2011 14:57:52 UTC +00:00
Apple’s recent iPad 2 commercial displays many great uses for the iPad other than games and web browsing. The iPad can be a great learning tool for both kids and adults. With my oldest son just beginning homeschooling, we plan to use the iPad along with other teaching tools. There are many apps other than the ones shown in this commercial that can be used for learning. Do you have a favorite that’s not listed here? Please share in the comments! Apps from the commercial: TED: TED presents talks from some of the world’s most fascinating people: education radicals, tech geniuses, medical mavericks, business gurus and music legends. Favorite Four: Free Video Content

By Kevin Stout on May 25th, 2011 This week my favorite four lists my favorite apps for watching free videos. Most come to 148apps to learn which apps to spend their hard earned dollars on. Today I’ll mix it up, because my favorite four are apps with free video content. Crackle Crackle, a division of Sony, adds 20 new movies and TV episodes to its app monthly. It’s 100% free and a must-have app for anyone. It’s always there for me to just whip out and watch whenever I don’t really have a preference. Some of my current favorites available are 21, The Nines, The Karate Kid I and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. TED is a nonprofit organization that started out as a way bring together the worlds of technology, entertainment and design. Now it’s scope is much further, and can be seen in full detail on the iPad. TED (Technology, Entertainment & Design) is a twice-yearly free conference that focuses on spreading ideas. “We’re building … a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired leaders,” writes TED, “and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.” Now, TED is available on the iPad App Store. The applications supports videos of TEDTalks (18 minute speeches from those with ideas) in high or low resolution, online or offline; as well as a ‘tag’ search facility to make it easy to find specific ideas. Speakers include Al Gore to Jane Goodall to Sir Ken Robinson. And everything’s free – from the download to the watching. The Read More
Apple’s AirPlay Seed Begins to Take Root
Calendar16 Wed, 13 Apr 2011 21:59:32 UTC +00:00
Last year, Apple introduced a sleeper agent that, while better than its predecessor, still wasn’t fully active. That agent was the Apple TV, and it wasn’t until the release of iOS 4.3 that its true potential became apparent. Wireless media streaming protocol AirPlay was the key to that potential, and with iOS 4.3, it expanded beyond the confines of Apple’s own limited sphere of apps and into the vast library of the larger App Store. Major players in the online video business may still be reluctant to embrace AirPlay, but plenty of small developers are seizing the opportunity it provides to bring content from the mobile screen to the living room television. ShowYou, which pulls video content from social networks to your iPad, is just one example. Discovr, which helps you find new music, is another, and Air Video unlocks your desktop-based library for both your iOS mobile devices and your Read More

Twenty Apps You Need for Your New iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Dec 2010 17:46:34 UTC +00:00
Yesterday we suggested twenty apps to download for your new iPhone, but what if you received an iPad for Christmas?  You’ll be needing this list, than!  Here are twenty recommended iPad apps and although there are some repeat apps from the iPhone list, there are plenty of new suggestions too. As before, the first ten should be considered ‘must-haves’, while the second ten depend more on what you want to do with your iPad.  Here we go: For All Users: A Little More Specific: That’s it!  We hope these inspire you to explore what your new iPad can do, as there are so many great apps available.  Don’t forget, there are many alternatives to the ones we’ve mentioned, so don’t be afraid to search the App Store. Also, if you existing iPad owners have a favorite app that you’d recommend for new owners, tell us about it in the comments! Read More
Homescreens – Dezember 2010 (iPhone + iPad)
Calendar16 Sat, 11 Dec 2010 10:35:56 UTC +00:00
Außerdem verstecken sich innerhalb der Ordner folgende Apps*: Amazon.de (kostenlos; App Store-Link), Convertbot (1.59 €; App Store-Link), AnalyticsPro (5.49 €; App Store-Link), Delivery Status touch (3.99 €; universal; App Store-Link), Dropbox (kostenlos; universal; App Store-Link), iCabMobile (1.59 €; universal; App Store-Link), Skype (kostenlos; App Store-Link), WeatherPro (2.99 €; App Store-Link), Pastebot (2.99 €; App Store-Link), LogMeIn (23.99 €; universal; App Store-Link), OffMaps (1.59 €; universal; App Store-Link), Kik (kostenlos; App Store-Link), PayPal (kostenlos; App Store-Link), Linkie (0.79 Read More
iPad Gets New TV Ad and Further International Launches
Calendar16 Wed, 01 Dec 2010 09:22:47 UTC +00:00
Apple continue to launch the iPad around the world, with 11 new countries added to the list this week.  The lucky ones are Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Norway, Hungary, Finland, Denmark and the Czech Republic, where both the Wi-Fi and 3G models should be available from your Apple dealer. A new TV advert has also made its debut this week, entitled ‘iPad is Amazing’.  Although it doesn’t break with tradition too much, this new ad highlights some of the new features of iOS 4.2 rather than concentrating on a particular app genre as recent ads have done. It features: We’ve come to expect Pages and some of the standard apps to make an appearance, but the odd-one-out here is AirStrip, a very specific medical application designed for doctors working in hospitals where a particular piece of equipment is being used.  That’ll appeal to the person on the street! TED Releases iPad App
Calendar16 Fri, 15 Oct 2010 18:04:32 UTC +00:00
By Chris Hall on October 15th, 2010 TED releases an iPad app. TED, if you haven’t heard of it, is a global collection of conferences that was originally focused on new and innovative ideas in the realm of technology and design, but now has spilled over into great ideas in any field. Starting in 1984, TED was created to provide a platform for “ideas worth spreading”, and has since had famous speakers including Bill Gates, Al Gore, the founders of Google, and (huh?) Sarah Silverman. Because of its astronomical ticket prices (upwards of $5,000 a pop), most of the fans of TED view the conferences either through the TED website or via podcast. According to a Wikipedia stat, the conference is hugely popular, having been viewed by more than 290 million people worldwide, and the number is growing at a rapid pace. Since TED started as a tech influenced conference, it Read More

SCrabtree 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
A must-have, page one, in-the-dock app! Excellent work from my most favorite and inspiring organization. However, some additions are needed: - SEARCH! (a very basic, critical need) - Speakers listed by name (First name / Last name, as well as Last then First; for those of us who remember differently) - Allow more than 12 videos to be saved. (Why put a cap on it? I understand TED my have bandwidth issues though, but I want to carry around SO MANY of these; especially for showing TED off to all my friends and anyone else I can corner for "18 mins max". ;-)
