Über Twitter verkündet der derzeitige TED-Kurator Chris Anderson, dass die “Ideas worth spreading“-Konferenzwebseite seine Videos (“TED Talks” genannt) ab sofort auch in einem iPhone- und iPad-kompatiblen Format anbietet. Webbrowser, die als ‘User Agent‘ nicht mit einem MobileSafari aufwarten, bekommen einen direkten (Download-)Link beziehungsweise weiterhin die Videos im Flash-Format aufgetischt. Vom iPhone lässt sich ein Benutzerkonto anlegen, mit dem Kommentare und Stern-Bewertungen (“Favorites”) vergeben werden. Ungeachtet der Neuerungen steht für den Video-Zugang ebenso das offizielle App Store-Programm TED (kostenlos; App Store-Link), sein inoffizieller Vertreter Mother TED (kostenlos; App Store-Link) oder der hauseigene YouTube-Kanal zur Verfügung. I love the idea of TEDTalks - inviting people from a broad collection of fields to talk about what they do, and then working to make those talks available to the widest possible audience. I'm a huge fan of the TED app and other efforts to grow the reach and accessibility of TED. The app itself has room to grow, but it's off to a good enough start and the content itself makes up for a somewhat clumsy first implementation. Please keep up the good work.

Just didn't work

I've downloaded TED talks and watched them on my Mac. The content is fascinating. I was really looking forward to watching more of them on my bus ride. But the talk kept stalling. It was not at all watchable. I was using EDGE, but what else would I use on a bus? Besides, YouTube videos work fine. Maybe a future version can do a better job caching or downloading, but for now, don't waste your time fighting it. I gave up after it repeatedly stalled before 0:45 (somehow the initial ad always played though...).

I strongly claim that this app is one of the best apps in iTunes. I've always enjoyed lectures from TED via its website or Podcast which takes a lot of space of my laptop's HDD. Now, I don't neither need to download Podcasts nor to access TED website but all I have to do is just tap this app's icon in my iPod touch and enjoy it. Of course this app requires internet connection but that doesn't matter to me.

The content is great. I'm a TED first timer, never heard of it before downloading this app but fell in love with it from the first lecture. My major contention is that half the time the video lectures will not completely download the first time around. Is this a TED problem or my wi-fi problem? It would have a solid five if not for that and the occassional crash.(I rebooted before using the program and it works fine for a while then I have to reboot again because it would crash) Aside from that, I love variety of topics discussed and look forward to hearing more!

Am I missing something? It doesn't work

I'm a huge fan of the TED Talks, so I was really excited to get this app on my ipod touch. Imagine my disapointment when I downloaded it, waited several minutes for it to load, and then found that it doesn't work. The Home screen has a top area with the title banner "Ideas Worth Spreading" and an empty white space underneath, and then halfway down the screen there's another title bar that says "Latest Items" with the remainder of the screen blank white. Videos, Audio, and Favorites are all blank as well. I've tried restarting my ipod, reinstalling the app, and nothing worked. I haven't been able to find anyone else with this problem while browsing on the internet. I'd love to be able to have this app working, but the videos quite simply aren't there.

I've had this app from day one, and I'd highly recommend it to any fan of the TED.com website. However, I've noticed that, with the past two updates, sometimes the audio of a video will begin playing again after you exit a video and return to the app's home screen. While it's still possible to navigate the app's menus, there's no way to stop the audio unless you start a new video or close the app. Overall, though, this remains one of my favorite apps.
