TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Zynga Poker
Calendar16 Mon, 18 Jul 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
Zynga has gained a reputation as the evil empire lately, and to a certain extent that's true -- a lot of the company's Facebook "games" aren't much more than pyramid scams. But Texas Hold'Em poker is a game that will always have players, and for all of Zynga's drama, their Poker app has been pretty fascinating to me lately. I've been playing on Facebook mostly, but for those times when I'm away from home, the iOS app has served pretty well. It's unfortunately very barebones -- the official Apple Texas Hold'em app is much better in terms of presentation, despite not being updated in quite a few years. But Zynga Poker's big selling point is not only that it shares a bankroll with your Facebook account, but that it's basically instant access, even on a 3G connection, to other online poker players, whenever you want it. The money doesn't really mean Read More
New Apple patent suggests advanced iPhone gaming
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Nov 2010 19:30:00 UTC +00:00
A new Apple patent describes several interesting ideas for playing games with others in an augmented reality space. The patent, called "Interactive Gaming with Co-Located, Networked Direction and Location Aware Devices," describes an iPhone app that would network up a series of devices in the same real-world space and use the phone's hardware to track and show other players as the game is being played. For example, players could use their devices as a "gun," and the GPS, gyroscope, and accelerometer in the iPhone would all work together to figure out if shots "fired" from one device would actually hit another. Consider a wireless, high-tech form of laser tag on a large scale. The patent also describes using accessories to play the game (such as a gun grip handle to place your iPhone in as you play), or even using the accelerometer to do other things like steering a virtual vehicle Read More
TUAW's Daily App: Pokerbot
Calendar16 Tue, 13 Jul 2010 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
We posted about another poker app back at WWDC, and the developer of Pokerbot got in touch with us to show off his app as well. Pokerbot is a little bit different than your standard hold'em poker game. It's a straight up one-on-one battle, so the game is really built for learning how to play poker well; it doesn't drag out games or rely on graphical flair. The game started out as a poker training program, and the developer of the game's AI is a real poker player who has played more than a few good hands. That said, this probably isn't the app you want to get if you just want to enjoy playing at a full table; Pokerbot is meant for poker buffs or people who want to try to get to that level. There are little game touches that might turn hardcore players off (you can cheat with Read More
Apple spotlights apps ready for iOS 4.0
Calendar16 Sat, 26 Jun 2010 15:30:00 UTC +00:00
We already spotlighted a few big apps that have made the jump to iOS 4 (and I'm sure we'll have more coming up soon), but Apple has gone ahead and put a few of its favorites on a page in iTunes for you to browse through as well. There are some excellent games on the list (PopCap didn't waste any time, and Ngmoco has a few, along with both Firemint titles). Art app Brushes and TUAW favorite Dropbox are there too, along with a bevy of other popular titles. This list definitely isn't definitive (iBooks is obviously ready for iOS 4, though it's not on there), but if you want to see what the Retina Display is like or check out multitasking on an app like Pandora, you can do so. One interesting note on what's not on there: Apple hasn't yet updated its official Remote app, and Texas Hold 'Em Read More
Average iPad app price is $1 more than iPhone apps
Calendar16 Tue, 04 May 2010 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
Here's some more interesting stats about app pricing. We've heard pricing average stats before, including that the average app price seems to be hovering right around three dollars. But a firm in the Netherlands has done some more research into current iPad and iPhone app prices, and discovered that while iPhone apps average out at $3.87 (slightly higher than most estimates, but still in that $3 range), iPad apps are actually hitting an average of $4.67, almost a dollar more than iPhone versions. That's both good and bad news for developers -- while it does mean that iPad apps are releasing and selling at higher prices (something most developers believe should be the case, given the amount of work and design that goes into iPad apps versus their smaller-screen cousins), those prices aren't that much higher. Apple specifically priced their iPad apps at $9.99 after selling their iPhone game at $4.99, Read More
Apple Looking to Hire In-House Video Game Talent
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Dec 2009 15:46:04 UTC +00:00
Apple’s posted job listings seem to provoke no end of exciting speculation, and one of its latest open calls for applications is certainly no exception. New job postings call for a software engineer for the iPhone Gaming Group, and a video game artist. Last month’s call for a game/media software engineer was somewhat open to interpretation, but this time around, there’s no ambiguity involved. Not that Apple hasn’t made games in the past, as The iPhone Blog points out. Texas Hold’Em is a game, after all, if not a particularly ambitious one. But that casual game was a one-off, and was probably designed more to get the ball rolling for third-party developers than as a meaningful entry point into the gaming industry for Apple itself. The new job postings, however, seem to indicate that Apple wants to start taking gaming much more seriously. The skill sets asked for definitely go beyond Read More

Apple seeks game guru for app development
Calendar16 Mon, 16 Nov 2009 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
While some say Apple never wanted the iPhone to be a gaming device, the company knows which way the wind is blowing and wants to get involved. Apple is looking to hire a game and media software engineer for its iPhone and iPod touch team, which could mean it wants to make games of its own. The job description doesn't say "games" specifically, focusing instead on "interactive multimedia experiences." However, the ad is looking for someone with "3-4 years of video game development experience," someone who has "shipped at least one AAA title," and someone who is a "passionate gamer." id Software co-founder John Carmack says higher-ups in Apple aren't overjoyed with the growing status of the iPhone and iPod touch as gaming devices. But there's big money in games. Research firm DFC Intelligence sees profits for dedicated game-device makers like Sony and Nintendo shrinking 27% over the next five years, Read More
Apple Hiring Gaming Engineer for iPhone Team
Calendar16 Sat, 14 Nov 2009 13:31:03 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Saturday, Nov 14, 2009 | Apple is looking to hire an experienced multimedia engineer for the iPhone and iPod touch, who’s a passionate gamer and has shipped at least one “AAA” game in the last few years. While first-party titles are a mainstay, and main point of attraction for dedicated gaming platforms like Nintendo (Mario), Microsoft (Halo), and Sony (Little Big Planet), so far all Apple has offered its “funnest iPod ever” is Texas Hold’em [$4.99 - iTunes link] back in 2007. Just what could Apple be brewing now? Anyone imagine what a first-party Apple gaming franchise could be? Read More
We broke the news a few weeks back that Namco Networks had created a dedicated Apple Games group, separate from the rest of its mobile division, to allow a particularly strong focus on the iPhone as a games platform.  We recently had the chance to interview Jonathan Kromrey, head of the new Apple Games group, regarding the formation of the division and what it means to iPhone gaming. Kromrey, who spent time as a producer at I-Play Mobile Gaming, has most recently been part of Apple's own, internal iPhone apps division and was involved with the phenomenally successful Apple iPhone game release of Texas Hold'em [App Store].  He came to Namco Networks, bringing with him a team of developers from both Apple and EA, with the goal of "bringing freshness and newness to iPhone gaming."  He indicates that his group has plans to not only bring a number of popular Japanese Read More

Great UI, mediocre AI...
drpynchon 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's hard to find big faults with the UI though I agree that some pot size-based buttons during betting might help. That said, again, the AI is quite intuitive and slick.
For $5, this game is more than worth it!
HighestStandards 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I think that $5 is such a reasonable price--especially compared to what other people are charging for less sophisticated apps. As for the game, it is gorgeous. If you hold your phone upright (vertical), you will see video clips of people actually playing. The game plays well; the taps and swipes are intuitively what you would expect. To fold, for example, you drag your cards to the table; to check, you tap three times. The only thing this game is missing is the ability to play with other people. It has Wi-Fi multiplayer, but you must play with people on the same wi-fi connection. This means either people you know, or if you get lucky and happen to hop on at Starbucks or somewhere and get someone else on at the same time. There are much less sophisticated games out there that allow you to play with live people. My boyfriend's older, crappier phone used to let me play tetris with real people.
Beautifully Designed for Quality AND Speed!
NYJB 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
As I have said in other reviews, I like to review products on five criteria, one point for each:
Needs independent AI's
HeyHiHo 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
Fun as a diversion, and the interface, graphics, sound, etc. are some of the nicest of any of the game apps....
People don't play like this
pokermanjones 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Sure, the graphics are great, but the way the computer plays is not what a real person would do. You wouldn't continuously raise $300 and then fold when you were reraised. If you do this, then you shouldn't be playing poker. I wish the computer would make decisions like an actual person would.
Great application - great execution!
monsterbucket 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The ability to rotate the iPhone (and I suppose iPod Touch) to see either a headsup or top-down view of the game is great. The gameplay is superb and easily worth the price of the app.
Great game, great use of touchscreen for controls
Alderete 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great version of Texas Hold'em poker. I've not yet tested the multiplayer aspect, but it's great as a single-player game. What's particularly nice is how well designed the user interface is, taking advantage of the iPhone / iPod Touch touchscreen to make actions easy and intuitive. For example, to check bet you double-tap the playfield. To go all in, push your chip stack in. To fold, flick your hand at the dealer. Etc.
Insulting, Unrealistic (but pretty)
guthrie 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
This game is an insult to the intelligence of anyone who actually plays poker. Without seeing play after my fold, it is impossible to learn anything about the players. Things like play after the fold, speed of play, and many others, should be controllable in the preferences.
Best poker game I've played
MSV_Apocalypse 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game isn't perfect, but it's the best poker game I've found so far. Much better than the one available for the iPod and better than the one I got on Xbox Live. The betting interface could be better, with buttons for 1/2 pot, 3/4 pot, etc. bet amounts, rather than a dial. The way it is now, you always have to click the pot first to see how much it is beforehand.
Great Game, but I wish multiplayer was better
Whatever who cares 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a fun, well-executed version of Texas Hold'em. For the price, it's almost a steal. But that doesn't mean that it's perfect. The multiplayer in this is not online and only works if you're on the same wifi connection as someone else. So if you're in a car where you don't have an internet connection, even if you're two inches away from another person, you guys can't play together. I hope to see this addressed in an update, because I would love to play multiplayer during those long drives on a vacation.
Just OK
esoffron 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Single player mode has a lot of slick animation that very quickly grows old for someone who just wants to play cards.
Nice UI marred terrible game engine
ExLT 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
The graphics and user interface are excellent. The "live" actors and various locales also add a very sophisticated touch. The AI is poor; however, good poker AI is difficult to program and given the low price of app, any criticism of the AI is unwarranted.
Fun and Addictive
edshull 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a huge poker fan, and I am always disappointed in video game versions. But this one is a lot of fun, and very addictive. Really a great looking game and a lot of fun.
It's Apple, what do you expect? :)
Niiro13 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've never really liked Texas Hold'em, but just using this application changed my mind!
Excellent
dmetzcher 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is an amazing game. I would have paid more for it. In portrait mode, the game is visually-stunning, looking more like a movie than a game. In landscape mode, you get the full view of the table. One of the best features is the fact that I don't have to wait for the computer players. If I fold, the game moves instantly to the winning hand. If I bet, and don't feel like waiting for the other computer players to bet, tapping the screen cycles through their bets instantly and lands on me, allowing me to make my decision immediately. Apple did a very nice job with this game. I'm going to be running my battery down frequently, playing this whenever I get the chance.
Amazing
San Marcos 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great graphics, great gameplay, very polished.
Really great game, not as stable as I'd like
Huboon Mutant 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been playing this game a few hours now, in both modes (overhead and face to face) and I LOVE it, very well designed. I find it crashes about every 15 - 20 minutes though, which is very annoying and breaks my flow ;-) Hopefully it will get more stable in future updates because I love having a good game like this to play on the iPhone! Oh, my phone is the 1st gen, if that makes any difference to the stability.
Awesome Game
C h a d 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game doesn't get boring. Ive played for at least three hours and it's still incredibly fun. I love the career gameplay in which you can earn up your money and advance through locations.
Crude AI spoils the fun
JavaAddict 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
The AI makes the experience worse than online poker with a table full of fish. Fish that have conspired against you, that is. Pot odds, hand strength... they mean nothing. The big stack gets super-aggressive and starts pushing people around--which is fine. EXCEPT that when you call the bluff they catch a card on the river to bust you about four times out of five. It's VERY frustrating. I'd worked hard to build my bankroll to the multi-table rooms, only to get busted by people going all-in pre-flop with garbage like 2-4 offsuit against my AA, 10-3 against my AQ. I mean, who wouldn't call? And when you change speeds and get aggressive, the deck turns cold and you end up donkeying off your chips. I wish SOMEBODY would make a poker game that would simulate the home cash game experience. This app negates real poker skills and rewards idiotic behavior. I hate it.
Awesome game for a poker fan.
VictorSK 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just a well designed game that is fun to play. Multiplayer via WiFi is great with other friends. Almost as fun as a real game of poker.
Smart AI
DeathSprite 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The game seems to adjust to your betting style (agressive or conservative).
Great app
Julius84 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Lots of fun and the graphics are great. Playing against AI is fun and learning their tells is new to me for a poker game on my phone. I recomend it; well worth the $
Great no limit game for a phone
TheChef 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Well, this is a fantastic version for a phone. The online aspect is great, but like someone else mentioned, next revision should have 2/3, 1/2 & 3/4 pot bets. Otherwise, I'd pick this up if you dig holdem.
Excellent
anicesunset 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is definitely a must-buy for any card-game lover. There are so many different settings that you can play at (including Vegas, Dubai and even an aquarium!!!). The coolest app in the entire store. Thanks for making it Apple!
The best hold em game on any platform
