Last fall at TechCrunch Disrupt, Pinger, the company behind hugely popular texting application Textfree, announced that it was adding voice support to its application — a big deal, given that it adds voice calling to the iPod Touch and it allows iPhone users to make calls without burning their AT&T minutes. The feature was in beta for around two and a half months (during which it was tested by thousands of people), and it went live for everyone on December 21. Today, Pinger is announcing just how well it’s done: between December 21 and December 30, users made 2.5 million voice calls. That’s a lot of talking. On an average day, Textfree hands out somewhere on the order of 15,000 free phone numbers to its users (when you sign up for the service you get a new, unique phone number, which your friends can use to text and call you). Pinger Now Turns Your iPod Touch Into A Free Cell Phone
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Sep 2010 21:46:57 UTC +00:00
Earlier this month we took a look at Pinger, the company behind Textfree, a massively popular application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that gives users free, unlimited text messaging. Since launching in March 2009, users have sent over 4 billion text messages with the app, which has been downloaded 8 million times (these numbers effectively put Pinger in the top ten US carriers, volume-wise). And today at TechCrunch Disrupt, the company is announcing that it’s venturing into new territory: voice calls. Textfree will soon include a true SIP-based VOIP client that works over both 3G and Wifi. The feature is enabled by the fact that Pinger gives all of its users free, unique, real phone numbers (it distributed 1.7 million phone numbers last quarter; AT&T gave out 1.6 million in the same time span). Calling works as you’d expect: hit the call button, and you’ll see a dialpad — you’ll Read More

And even if a service did manage to offer it, it certainly couldn’t be sustainable, could it? Pinger, a startup that launched back in 2006 as a voicemail service but has since pivoted in a big way, would beg to differ: the company has managed to become immensely popular on the iPhone by offering free text messages to users through an application called Textfree. And it’s just blown past another major milestone: users have sent 3.5 Read More

10 Essential Money-Saving iPhone Apps
Calendar16 Fri, 26 Mar 2010 22:00:49 UTC +00:00
by Luke Knowles is the founder of numerous money-saving websites including Coupon Sherpa, Gift Card Granny and Mr. Free Stuff. In 2008 Luke founded Free Shipping Day, now a red-letter discount date for online holiday shopping. Despite a recession allegedly in our rear view mirror, frugality remains a hot, dare I say trendy topic. Nowhere is that more evident than in the often expensive world of consumer tech. Those of you currently debating that iPad purchase know just what I mean. But remember, a one-time splurge could pay dividends in the long run if you do your homework. Take Steve Jobs’ previous technological wonder. The iPhone’s price tag might seem hefty, but just a cursory review of its money-saving potential might prove tempting to even the most fiscally conservative. Here are ten of our favorite apps for the frugal-focused. The first step to saving money is learning how to handle it. Read More

Pinger may not be the iPhone app developer we covered extensively in the past, but they’re laughing their way to the bank as I write this. The company’s 14 apps are all listed in the top 100 iPhone apps in the AppStore. And now they’ve announced that more than 1 billion text messages have been sent with their Textfree app within 9 month! The billion texts sent came from about 5 million people who’ve downloaded the app. Both the number of downloads and especially the number of texts sent impress, and once again prove there’s money to be made out of mobile apps. Finally in case you don’t know about Textfree, it allows anyone to send up to 15 text messages a day for free. The premium version, available for $5.99 a year, removes that barrier and includes unlimited SMS. Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now Read More

GUIDA: Come ottenere le Notifich Push con Facebook
Calendar16 Wed, 05 Aug 2009 10:04:55 UTC +00:00
Successivamente registrate un Read More
How To Get Facebook Push Notifications Now
Calendar16 Wed, 05 Aug 2009 02:44:13 UTC +00:00
We know the Facebook iPhone app is about to have a feature packed upgrade, which you can read all about here, but unfortunately the update won’t include the best feature of OS 3.0 – push notifications.  Joe Hewitt, developer of the Facebook app, says push notifications will be included in a later update, but for now we’re stuck receiving those annoying email updates. But luckily there is a way you can get notifications pushed straight to your iPhone right now as text alerts using Textfree Unlimited or Textfree Lite. We wrote earlier about how Textfree Unlimited can be used as a great alternative to the $5-$20 a month you pay AT&T for the privilege of receiving messages that cost AT&T virtually nothing to send. Now the app has gotten even more useful. To do this, first install either Textfree Unlimited or Textfree Lite. Open the app and sign up for an account. This Read More
The App Store approval process has always been mysterious, slightly ridiculous and mildly infuriating. But with the summary execution of Google Latitude as well as every Google Voice app, it's finally gone too far. Until this past week, Google's been the most privileged developer for the iPhone outside of Apple itself. I mean, Google Maps and YouTube come baked into the phone. Hell, Google even gave the iPhone voice search—a more powerful version, no less—before it delivered the feature to its own OS, very obviously using private APIs that would've likely resulted in a swift kick in the ass for any other developer. Yet here we are, Apple has rejected not one, but two Google apps that would deliver major new features to the iPhone, for reasons that are so obviously tripe it's insulting to even our non-exceptional intelligence. A Google Latitude app would confuse us? Really? Because it would "use Read More
I’ve been keeping my eyes, almost obsessively, on all the new iPhone OS 3.0 apps out there. I’ve especially been looking for push apps. I’ll give you the lowdown on the particular Push apps I consider worthy of download later in this column. But first, I want to talk to you about a problem I’m having. I upgraded my iPhone from original to 3GS last week and was sad to see my trusted iPhone die the death of deactivation. The feeling was quickly replaced by that smug pride I know most iPhone users have when they know they have the latest and greatest. So I looked at my 3GS with wonder as I explored the hundreds of new and updated 3.0 apps to roll out over the last couple weeks. I’m super excited that I finally put a Push-enabled chat app on my home screen. I got rid of Apple’s Messages and Notes Read More
14 iPhone Apps With Push Notification for Productivity

Elliott Kosmicki is the founder of GoodPlum.com, a productivity and personal development blog for home business owners. You can also follow Elliott on Twitter. With iPhone 3.0 OS upon us, we’ve finally seen the delivery of much-needed push notifications from Apple. Applications that take advantage of this new feature continue to trickle in, and though the selection is slim right now, there are a handful of apps (some on their way) that should allow you to become more productive throughout your day. With push notifications, you can now stop checking news for breaking stories, or forget opening your IM app to see if someone is looking for you – rather, you can get instantly notified instead. Let’s take a look at a handful of useful apps that can get you the information you crave even more quickly. Hidden Gems: Keeping It All Synced
Calendar16 Wed, 01 Jul 2009 20:52:55 UTC +00:00
I have an unwritten rule about my iPhone – nothing can be exclusively stored on it. Lots of bad things can happen to an iPhone. The device can be lost, stolen or destroyed. The apps are constantly updated and and they can be accidentally unsynced, deleted or corrupted. It can get jailbroken or restored too. I’ve lost my content enough times over the years that I’ve been pursuing ways of ensuring that wouldn’t happen on my iPhone. I don’t want any of my contacts, calendars, photos, videos, tasks, text messages or notes to be lost. Ever. This week I’ll talk to you about some well-downloaded apps and services that you might want to give a second look at. But, first, I want to point you to a couple cool apps I found this week. I don’t know what the replay value of this game will be, but for a few minutes Read More
HOW TO: Never Pay A Cent For Text Messages
Calendar16 Tue, 30 Jun 2009 23:12:57 UTC +00:00
I finally did it. No more monthly fees for text messages from AT&T. Thank you, Push Notifications. The way people use texts varies considerably from person to person. Some need unlimited messages while others only send a couple a day. In any case, here are options that should make kicking the costly text message addiction easy for just about everyone, well anyone with an iPhone that is. Savings could range from a couple dollars a month to over $20 a month if you’re on a family plan. Textfree Lite is limited to only 15 messages a day and that number could change at any time for the better or worse. If you’re subscribing to AT&T’s minimum plan, that’s already a considerable increase in your texts per month. Textfree Unlimited is unlimited for a year. Either of these options may work for you. In fact, both may work for you. You can Read More
TextFree Unlimited
Calendar16 Thu, 25 Jun 2009 22:20:41 UTC +00:00
Textfree Unlimited started something on the iPhone, offering free texting to users. But it was limited because the only way to receive messages was through email and only in response to a message that the user sent. So it really wasn't all that great of an option. But now that 3.0 is out, TextFree is back in the game and is looking to solve the expensive problem of texting once and for all. Now TextFree gives users an account that can be texted to. Signing up for the account is as simple as choosing a username. Once all set, a sent text will come from that username and received texts will be replied to that username. But that's not the exciting part. Now with Apples new push notifications, users will receive replies wherever they are, just like a real SMS. This means you can hold a conversation and be notified on Read More
Hidden Gems: 3.0 Apps To Download, Wait For Or Avoid
Calendar16 Wed, 24 Jun 2009 20:00:42 UTC +00:00
The iPhone OS 3.0 apps have been trickling out slowly but surely. I’ve been trolling the RSS feeds, the App Store, Twitter and the Internet non-stop for the past week to keep our Peer To Peer, Push Notification and Mapping Applists completely up to date. Some of the new apps and app updates have been impressive. Others, not so much. This week I’m going to take a bit of a departure from the typical hidden gems format and give you a rundown of what’s hot, what’s not and what’s still in the offing for OS 3.0 apps. For days after iPhone OS 3.0′s debut we wondered where the Push Notification chat applications were. Instead of Meebo, AIM, BeejiveIM and IM+, we were treated instead to interesting but unsatisfying offerings like AP Mobile, Tap Tap Revenge, Star Defense and a handful of others. Sure it’s cool that AP Mobile sends you breaking Read More
Quick App: Textfree 3.0 with Push Notification for iPhone
Calendar16 Sat, 20 Jun 2009 04:20:35 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Jun 19, 2009 | Pinger fulfills the longstanding demand for SMS-style alerts with iPhone 3.0-style support for Push Notifications in the aptly named Textfree 3.0 ($5.99 – iTunes link). What does that buy you? One year of free text messages for the iPhone (and iPod touch!). With support for every U.S. mobile carrier, including AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, Alltel, and others, if the idea of paying Big Telco big money for incredibly small amounts of text doesn’t appeal to you, check out Textfree 3.0 and let us know what you think! Screenshots after the break! Read More
iPhone 3.0 has landed, and the first apps with the new features are squirming their way through the App Store's clenching gates of approval. How are they? Well, for starters, they all look awfully familiar. Given that the firmware update has only been live for two days now, the vast majority of 3.0-utilizing downloads are just refreshes of older apps. In fact, you can expect that the be the case for a while; iPhone 3.0's new features are nice, but most of them aren't the kind of thing you'd build an entire app around. So, here are the best of the updates: Leaf Trombone: World Stage: Apple demoed this thing way back in March, but that was pre-3.0, and most importantly for this App, pre-multiplayer. That's the big update here: iPhone faux-trombone duets which can be played over Bluetooth. The "World Stage" aspect of World Stage is still intact, putting your Read More
Free-SMS app TextFree adds push notification
Calendar16 Fri, 19 Jun 2009 15:36:00 UTC +00:00
Push notification: A major "get" for free-SMS apps. SMS charges can quickly bankrupt a text-happy teen, which is why free-SMS apps are so popular. These programs effectively recreate the texting experience, but with one major shortcoming: they can't notify you of new messages unless they're running. iPhone OS 3.0 changes all that, and mega-popular TextFree is one of the first free-SMS apps to support the operating system's new push-notification capabilities. Specifically, TextFree Unlimited 3.0 pops up a new-message alert whether it's running or not, and whether your iPhone is on or off. In other words, it functions more like Apple's stock SMS app (now called Messages). It differs only in that you don't pay dime one to send or receive messages. The only remaining downside is that if someone texts your phone number rather than your TextFree address (e.g., textyjoe@textfree.us), it'll land in Messages. Actually, there's an exception: If a message Read More

It is a really good app. It saves me at least $50in texting every month. Overall it's pretty good but there should be a few improvements: 1. Landscape mode should be available 2. A notification right on the screen of the iPod, like how the iPhone does somehow, to let you know you receieved a message even when you aren't on the app itself. But overall, best $6 I spent on apps

I LOVE this App! I have a cell phone but it just costs way too much to get unlimited texting. But, wow, this is only $5.99 and it works great! I can talk to all my friends and they are all happy that I have texting now. One thing I would change though would be that my ipod could ring or something could pop on my main screen that says I have a new text. It is a little annoying to have to stay on the TextFree app to know if I got a text, it would be nice if I could be doing something else on my ipod and know if I got a text. But other than that this app is great! I have wireless Internet in my house so I can text all over my house and outside. Great App! It is definatly worth the money! I <33 it!! <33 Erin

Best testing app
brianjw 5.0 stars Version: 3.0
With the latest update of this app, you can have your own permanant address so people can send you stuff instead of replying to your messages. In 3.0 os it notifies you outside the app without using email. Testing is fast and free. Best app for use internationally which I will be doing soon. Overall, it's a great app and you should get it.
Problems need to be fixed ASAP
thinkblue77 2.0 stars Version: 3.0
As so many have stated (albeit many of them carrying on like retarded 10 year olds), there are a number of problems with the current release of this app. First and foremost, it can take as long as an hour or two for a reply to be received. In doing some testing with other Pinger members, the problem seems to be with messages coming from outside the textfree.us network. For example, if 2 TextFree members text each other, the response is nearly instantaneous. The delay seems to occur when someone out of network sends a text to a textfree.us address, although why this would happen, only Pinger could answer. The length of my delays are generally from 30-60 minutes thus far, which is obviously unacceptable for having any real time conversation. Secondly, the app crashes quite often on launch. It can take 3 or 4 starts before I can finally compose a text and get it sent. Back to the delays, I forgot to mention, that my outbound texts to anyone, regardless of their wireless carrier, seem to be received by them almost instantly, it is only their inbound replies that have the unacceptable delay, which would lead one to believe that the problem exists solely on the Pinger side of this equation. Pinger, maybe you could look at how your mail servers are handling the mail queue? I'm assuming from the low cost of your services, you are using Linux servers? You might check your configuration to insure that inbound mail from outside your domain is not being unecessarily held up in the mail queue, or is not unecessarily bouncing some sort of verification resend back to the sending server causing these major delays? On a Linux server I manage for SMTP paging (similar to the function Pinger is using to send SMS texts) I find that despite properly configuring my Postfix settings, Sprint and Verizon regularly fill my mail logs with messages stating "Too many connections from your domain", causing a max delay of maybe 2 minutes as my server is forced to wait and then resend, though this is from my outbound mail INTO their system, which is the opposite of the problem that seems to be plaguing Pinger. When TextFree works, it works great. This will be a 5 star app once the problems are corrected. For now though, you may want to hold off on your purchase until the flood of negative reviews changes to the positive. Here's to hoping that Pinger is able to find a quick solution to their problems...

Da King1 1.0 stars Version: 3.0
Two complaints about this app.
Don't make people pay the yearly fee!
An honest man... 1.0 stars Version: 3.0
Ok, you can't say that there is no yearly fee, then make and upgrade where, if you upgrade, you must lay a yearly fee. I upgraded to the newest version and it had worked well for me. However, I am Not notified of a new text when I am not in the app, and I am VERY DISAPPOINTED that a yearly fee is being chagred. Please change that. I love this app, but I may not use it if I have to pay a fee.
I'm so pist off!

All that can be said about this app is that it's simply AMAZING! There's only one thing that can make it better though. And that is if it alerted us or made a sound when we get new texts while we aren't using the app.
Best

i've changed my rating several times for this app, as I've had it for several months through its ups and downs. now it's good, and very worth it.
Contains bugs but very useful
09itigy 4.0 stars Version: 3.0
This is a great inexpensive application that has completely replaced my texting... There are a few bugs in it though. It will sometimes freeze and close down and it has a sidesways keyboard but it works takes a while for the screen to turn. Other than that I've been having hardly any problems... When those are fixed it will have five stars for sure.
Take that AT&T!
TehGort 5.0 stars Version: 3.0
I don't know how they managed it, but I now have unlimited text to bug my friends with!

This app is great the new update is great now all they need to do is to have a notification come up telling you have a text when your not using the app even if you have the iPod touch
Not that bad
themexicanct 4.0 stars Version: 3.0
The updated version isnt that bad. Before the updated version the app would always freeze and i would have to reopen it. It got annoying until I updated it and it doesnt freeze as often but the text doesnt get to the person till like 20 min later and i have gotten complaints that i send a text to the same person 100 times otherwise this a pretty good app.
