I'm disappointed in this app. Main flaws are: Cannot rotate screen landscape and view the pages. Because each page is only viewable in portrait mode, you cannot read the text in full screen mode, just look at the pictures. It's completely identical to the printed book, and the same price as the "perfect bound" version --> $9.99 There is a "text mode", that converts each page, one-at-a-time, to a fixed font text only. This is readable, but you still cannot rotate to landscape, the text. But it gets worse, the text pages are ONLY that single page, you cannot scroll (flip the pages) forward to back in text mode. You can only turn to a full view page, tap the lower right icon, go into text mode, then tap to exit back to full screen mode, turn the page, then tap back to text mode for the next page. A-N-N-0-Y-I-N-G! When in full screen mode, don't get a hurry to flip pages, it is slow.

This is a great idea. Needs landscape view badly, otherwise this is not functional. I would say it's a $4 app at most, way overpriced compaired to other book apps. That being said the pictures are very nice. Hope they update this app soon, as this is a great idea.

This is a faithful rendition of the printed handbook. But it should be priced at no more than $5.00 . It should allow taking notes and recording advancement, like a paper copy would.

The eagerly anticipated new version of the Boy Scout Handbook is now available for your iPhone and iPod Touch, so now you can take it with you where ever you go. This is the latest edtion of a classic of outdoor knowledge that dates back almost 100 years and a worthy successor to previous editions. The graphics are much improved and the content is updated to reflect current rank requirements and the knowledge necessary to be a Boy Scout today. The information contained therein, though, is applicable to anyone who enjoys the outdoors, whether camping, hiking, fishing or canoeing. The only glitch that I came across is that you cannot use a finger swipe to move from page to page when you have zoomed in at all. You will definitely have to zoom in to read much of the text, so having to tap to zoom back out before changing pages could be somewhat of a pain. The content, though, is first rate!

Hope an update comes out soon to read the pages in landscape mode. Then this will be a great app. As it is now, print is too small for old scouters to read. I agree with other reviewers, wait till this update is available before buying.

Every loyal scout with an iPhone will get this app, but please, please, please BSA update it so that you can use landscape mode!!!!!

Great first app for the Boy Scouts of America. Easy to use, nice menu interface. Not a bad price for all of the content that is available. Tap the screen for a menu that gives you a text only option, table of contents, bookmarks and a great index.

What a great idea. Handbook online with all the richness of the new Centennial handbook. Wonderful resource at your fingertips. Should appeal to all of those tech savvy scouts. Great job BSA!

This is an outstanding app! I for one had no trouble at all reading and navigating through the material. Any negative comments I read about this app amount to pretty much the same thing, user preference. Some may not like the interface right away but I've seen far worse and with a little time you get used to it. I'm sure the boyscouts never intended this as a replacement to a printed scout manual anyway, and why would they? It makes an excellent quick reference for when your away from your full sized manual and can't quite recall something you were studying. Sure it could use some improvements but what first run app doesn't? I'm thrilled with this app as is if it gets updated that would be frosting on the cake!

It appears they created a PDF of the Printed handbook and indexed the text so you could search it. Put a fancy table of contents at the beginning and you have this app.

I think the purpose and idea are good, but they need to make it so that you can mark advancement and all that. I also can't find all of the merit badges and requirements if they are there, so please add those things.

Come on BSA you can do better than this! This is no better than carrying the book around with you. Look at other apps and see what the possibilities are. The app that is available for cub scouts called BragVest is a great little app for cubbies and that app is FREE! Yea, even that can use some work, but we expect more for you guys. Make it better, and provide us with FREE updates.

While I agree with many of the reviewers. This app puts the Handbook into a form that allows the boys to quickly gain access as well as in a medium (cell phones, Nintendo DS type interface) that they relate to. Kudos to BSA in putting this out there.

This works fine as a portable version of the book. Need to support better page turning and rotation of view for easier reading. I am looking forward to a release of version 2.

This book is great for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. The sections on First Aid, Scout Craft and Leadership are wonderful references and give good scouting advice. The issue I have with it is that it is not searchable, you have to go through page by page in a section to find specific topic, such as knots or lashings. Next it would nice if when your in text mode (eleminates the pictures) you could slide to the next page without having to go back to standard mode. I'm still glad I donloaded it and know it will get a lot of use with my Scouts and Family activities.

It is very nice to have the handbook on hand at all times. Just got the update so I am not sure of it but ver 1 work great for me it could only be better. Remember volunteers help for free Profesionals are paid to help and Scouters pay to help.

I bought this back in August and gave it 1 star. Version 1.1 is a much improved release, but some of the issues, like fixing typos and keeping the RULES CURRENT, are still lacking. Example, "Bugler" is NOT a valid leadership position for Star, Life or Eagle, it was a typo in the 12th edition and it's still a typo, and yet it's still in this revision. I'm leaving the parts below, from my first eval, cause they still apply. Beats carrying around the book in a few cases. The beauty of electronic copies, you SHOULD be able to keep the data updated, but not so in this duplicated, miniaturized version of the 12th edition. A Scout is Patient. (or will need to be with this app) Guess I should give it some positive comment, nice reference material, even with the 90MB payload of this 1.1 update. Fixing the ability to paginate in text mode is great... However, if I am flipping pages in FULL screen mode, and scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the page number, then "finger flip" to the next page, it goes to the top of the next page, which doesn't allow you to see the page number. YES, I can count, but I would like to be able to flip in the same view (top of page, middle of page or bottom of page) without having to reset the vertical view for each subsequent page. The ability to have three font sizes in text mode is GREAT. Hint to BSA: Don't even think of charging for updates... We who bought a pig in a poke on day one, have spent all we intend to spend... just saying...
