Developer Spotlight: Mike Smithwick of Distant Suns
Calendar16 Tue, 30 Aug 2011 16:31:00 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Aug 30, 2011 | TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Mike Smithwick of Distant Suns. What’s your name? Mike Smithwick What’s your company’s name? First Light Design, LLC, I was hoping to name it something like “Apple,” I know, dumb name, but someone already had it. Where are you located? San Jose, CA. Within walking distance of Cisco (really!), Intel, eBay, and only a few miles always from the Mother Ship. What’s your website address? www.distantsuns.com What’s your Twitter name? @distantsuns for any hot breaking news about, uh, Distant Suns (duh!). And @lazyastronomer for general space and astronomy geek stuff. Why @lazyastronomer? When people ask me why I wanted to write Read More
This post is about an iPad application that’s over two months old and has already been chosen as an App Store app of the week. But I’d never heard of it, and, given that the app only has around 95 reviews, I’m guessing a lot of TechCrunch readers haven’t seen it either. And it’s just so damn cool. It’s called and was put together by A&E Television Networks (which owns the History Channel) and developed by Bottle Rocket. It isn’t a game or social networking app or anything else even remotely sexy. It’s a daily newspaper that’s over 150 years old. The premise is simple: you get to relive the Civil War as it unfolded. Every day, you fire up the application and are presented with a handful of news stories that actually appeared in newspapers exactly 150 years ago — along with photographs, maps, quotes, and a running tally of the Read More
The cable network History released an app for history buffs that transports iPad owners back to the Civil War. The Civil War Today marks the 150th anniversary of one of the most important events in U.S. history with games, photos, and daily reports about the war. The updates start with the April 12, 1861 attack on Fort Sumter and continue for four years mirroring the events of 150 years ago as if it were happening today. App owners can further follow the carnage in real-time with diary entries, newspaper clips, and running tallies of the North and South casualty counts. “This is an extraordinary app that lets users touch and feel history in a way never before possible,” said Dan Suratt, EVP, Digital Media and Business Development, A&E Television Networks. “Experiencing the American Civil War in a serialized, ‘real-time’ manner, with direct access to original historical documents, provides a new and Read More

This app is amazing!
Jim in Frisco 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The level of interactivity is surprising. If I'd had something like this back in history class I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Kind of ironic that this app demonstrates how a newspaper should be ported to iPad while doing it with "news" that is 150 years old! It's a great template for future history books.
Fantastic App - Ingenious! Creative!

This is a must download! This app shows what can be done when a developer puts their mind to the task of creating a unique and amzing app. The combination of history and mondern technology seen in the app makes it hard to put down. If you are a fan of history, The Civil War specifically, or just great apps, then you need this on your iPad. Is it worth $7.99? At least. Remember, you are getting 4 years of content with this app. It will update daily as The Civil War runs its course laying out the events in real time. The news articles are great. The videos are well done and look great. The pictures and maps are a joy to look at on the iPad's screen. One of the coolest features is the diary section. It is a collection of writings from 15 individuals that gives the war a personal touch. In addition to that, it such a well laid out app. As another reviewer stated, it would serve as a great model for a current newspaper app. Do youself a favor and download this app. You are getting content for the next 1400+ days. How is that not worth $7.99?
Where did the A&E get this stuff?
wintrscape 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Lots of great resources here, worthy of 5 stars in both content and presentation. The use of archival materials makes it a very rich experience and lots of fun. But where are all of these great resources from? Where are the originals preserved? Not crediting the sources (anywhere that I can find) is both bad journalism and bad history. Credit the sources and I'd gladly change to 5 stars.
Zoom in on the past
Jeffrey Donenfeld 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great old timey newspaper viewer, with ultra zoom into individual pages and stories. High res scans! Super cool app, fluid navigation, compelling layout.
Excellent app
creeline 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Amazing bargain considering new content every day for the next 4 years!
Great app,one potential problem
robert bolanos 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love the app and it's ability to tell a day by day account of the war. Moreover, I love the quality of the app, the pictures and articles are very crisp and sharp. The only problem is I don't know that I will have access to day one etc. four years from now. As a history student doing student teaching this will help. Just don't know if it will help when my iPad dies or I have to get a new one. I wish the developer would mention if you can access all info years from now. I would love to integrate this app into the classroom. I believe this is a great example for future apps in the field of education in all subjects. I will be e-mailing the developer in hopes that I will be able to e-mail day by day to myself with photos and ability to access all content even four to ten years from now. Great app.
Unique Chronological Look at the Civil War
Andrew Dalgleish 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app provides a unique look at the Civil War through daily updates, allowing you to explore historical content "as it happens". Presented in a newspaper-front-page format, the people and stories come alive as you browse letters, pictures, and maps. I especially like the social network tie-ins and medals you can get for achievements. Speaking of medals, the person who did the typography and layouts should be given one.Best app I've bought lately - well done 'History Channel' hope you do more of these. Also 'Bottle Rocket' is really outshining all app developers these days!
Unbelievable
Joshua Searcy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app has honestly taken me by complete surprise. After reading a couple other glowing reviews I decided to pick it up, and since then I have been recommending it to all I know. I can't say that I've ever been a history buff, but with this I can easily see myself at least starting to become one. Great app...5 stars and then some
bamboozled
Mitchell Evans 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Well it looks like A&E and Bottle Rocket sent a memo out to their employees to review this app, because the 5 star reviews here are WAY off!First, this app is basically a nice looking front-end to a bunch of web content. It doesn't even work unless you are connected to the internet.Second, unlike the 5 star reviews, there is NOTHING special done in this app that takes advantage of the iPad. Windows are opened with a tap, and closed only by tapping on an X in the upper right of the window!! (no pinch to close or tapping in the background to close). Take a look at Flipboard to see how navigation should be done on the iPad.Next, while it's nice that you can view previous days, you cannot view future days. So it will take you FOUR YEARS before you can see all of the information that this app pulls from the web. This app is worth $1.99 max, and the high praise reviews here are very questionable.
Wow!
RPCVBG 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Holy cow this app is amazing! It has news stories, laid out in a great, useful, easy to use format, has journal / diary entries, including copies of the actual handwritten diaries, interactive sections with various facts, casualty counts, photo galleries, maps, etc. Only one small improvement I'd make is to give us the ability to back out of sharing an article (via a telegraph...very cool). If you accidentally touch it, you have to send it and then go back into the app. That's a minor thing though.I love how the stories come out in "real time" only one day's worth of news is released per day. What a great way to learn about this period in history. Very well worth the cost of this app!I would love to see this same kind of app for the American Revolution, but imagine what an undertaking that would be!
