A couple months ago, we noted that a company called 955 Dreams was playing the iPad like jazz with their hot app, The History of Jazz. Now they’re back again with another musically-themed iPad app. And it’s far out, man. On The Way To Woodstock takes everything that 955 Dreams learned from the jazz app and expands upon it. I had a chance to sit down with the team a few days ago and play around with the app. It’s beautiful, fun, and engaging. And much like The History of Jazz, I suspect it’s exactly the type of app Apple likes seeing pop up from developers to showcase their device. Users who got a chance to use The History of Jazz should immediately feel right at home with On The Way To Woodstock, as the look and feel remains largely the same. But 955 Dreams has blown the doors off this Read More

955 Dreams Plays The iPad Like Jazz
Calendar16 Sat, 05 Mar 2011 23:45:35 UTC +00:00
“The shallow experience for a user has to be very interesting. The deep experiences have to be profound.” That statement, which is profound itself, is how 955 Dreams co-founder Kiran Bellubbi approaches app creation. And so far, that approach is working — very well. The companies hit app, The History of Jazz, has been earning rave reviews and selling like crazy. And it’s not a $0.99 app selling like crazy — The History of Jazz is priced at $9.99. In the age of cheap apps, that may seem like a lot. But the model is working for 955 Dreams because they feel they’ve hit on a deeper experience that the iPad can offer. “I think it could have been $12.99. We always tell people it’s on sale,” Bellubbi jokes. “It’s tough to price chewing gum.” The History of Jazz is an iPad app that provides a visual and interactive walk through Read More

Missing Heros
Mocha Blue 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Kenny G is a featured artist . . . but no Billie Holiday?! No Coleman Hawkins? Lester Young?
Very good
St Louie Will 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Coverage is very good, except for "West Coast" era (Shorty Rogers, Lighthouse AllStars, etc). Also how can one present A history of jazz without the Dave Brubeck Quartet? Otherwise This is an excellent presentation of the progression of jazz. I also would have thought you would feature the famous Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert and Duke Ellington "Take The A Train", both Classics.
Good but not complete....
blueNgreen 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Stuff I like: Overall, I am really excited about this app. I am delighted about the rich user interface and the multi-media experience. The content is moderate in which someone who does not know much about jazz can become more knowledgeable. I'm having trouble with: I have trouble trying to perform a search within the app for certain artists. I would like a search functionality. Artists you missed: I was very dis-appointed to not have seen Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Charlie Parker, Esperanza Spalding, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Christian McBride, Diana Krall, and Wynton Marsalis not within the app. A lot of the other artist that were in the app were great! However, there are some significant artist that are missing to truly shape the tapestry of jazz. Please add.
Wow
SCstan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I like some kinds of jazz but can't name the various genres, styles whatever. I have been looking for some way to understand what jazz is, where it came from, why I like some kinds and not others and most importantly what do you call the kind I like. Anyway this app is great. It starts at the beginning of jazz's inceptionand has audio and video of each time period in jazz's evolution, the major players, samples of their work and even when their music is on iTunes. The information is very nicely laid out, easy to navigate and very informative. If you are a complete novice about jazz like me this is a great way to understand the genre.
Fantastic
in2sound 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This app is fantastic. It is a great compliment to the Ken Burns Jazz documentary. All jazz fans and lovers of music history should get this.
The best of the best!

Love The Format
Daddyonfire 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I agree with another reviewer that there are gaps in the artists mentioned. I bought the app in hopes that future updates will be content driven.
Fantastic
Desharkey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I teach High School band - including jazz band. This app is very "user friendly". It uses the strengths of the iPad to focus in on the people, time and music in jazz's history. BRAVO!

Fun app
Nocturne9 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I like this app. The iPad is the perfect vehicle for presenting type of multimedia experience. There are few quirky things about it, like scrolling text fields where I expected a page scroll, but once you figure out the controls, it's fun to peruse the info presented here. I would like to see more depth of info, but maybe that will be added over time.
Beautiful
Nklsstanger 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This is a gorgeous app that is very user-friendly. As content is added and gaps are filled this will exult become a 5 star app.
Great !!
Tony Belgium 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Very good format. Congratulations.
Superb
BaxterC 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Is this perfect-no.Are there artists missing and topics not covered? Yes.Saying that and getting it out of the way this app is a towering achievement.Jazz is not in the consciousness of the public like it should be.This app will hopefully bring jazz back into the consciousness of the U.S. And hopefully the rest of the world. The bios are superb, discographies complete and overall feel and navigation of the app, excellent. This needs to be on everybodies IPad.It is a digital encyclopedia and I for one am hoping that this app is a hit.Big props to the developers
Great intro to jazz
ChickenmanMS 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I love this app as a great survey for jazz especially as an introduction as the timelines are integrated with you tube videos and interspersed with the genre shifting albums of the era or style as well. Would have preferred the Tree of Jazz style by artist/style/ensemble to the flat yearly timeline just to be able to cover all the jazz legends in a sampling. Another interesting concept would be to take the legendary Great Day in Harlem photo by Art Kane from 1958 and make trees and timelines of the jazz styles off of it. But this.app definitely hits the mark as a jazz survey. Hopefully in future updates more artists and tracks are linked or included, and just for Take 5 Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond should be included.
Wow!
eblake 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Elegantly done, captivating, a joy.. Weather a jazz lover or not.. This will be enjoyed by all..
Must have for all jazz lovers!
JJ Allen 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Excellent app for all jazz aficionados and those who want to know more about the idiom. Great overview of all eras with good representative recordings from each. The multi- media format is wonderful. I would recommend to all my friends!!!
Educational Must!
36RED 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
As a music educator, I am constantly looking for creative and proper ways to integrate technology into my classroom. Through my iPad, this outstanding jazz history app incorporates many of Ken Burn's best segments of his landmark video series. It is easy and visually appealing to have this app supplement your classroom learning activities for jazz. The best aspect is how adaptable it is to so many grade levels! I highly commend the developers and strongly suggest that they get to work on one for a history of composers or musical instruments. Thank you on behalf of my students!
History of Jzz

arjay99 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
An excellent opportunity to hear a good collection of music. My only complaint is i wish the commentators would hush and let me just listen to music
Copyright
copyrightking 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Great title, but one could imagine severe copyright problems coming down the road. Authorship or aggregation?
Fantastic app!
S_bearden 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
