Namco Bandai have released Namco Arcade to the iTunes App Store for iOS devices with a free-to-play model in effect. If you’re a fan of retro gaming, this is certainly one you won’t want to miss as Namco has re-created many 1980′s classics and wrapped them all into one app. NAMCO Arcade includes the four titles XEVIOUS, The Tower of Druaga, Motos and Phozon, and more titles are panned for future release. The pricing structure for the included games is interesting, each day you get one free game to play and if you wish to continue – or play a different game, you can purchase play coins right within the app. Prices for the coins that allow you to play any game start at $.99 for 10 with the outright game purchases pricing starting at $1.99 and going up as high as $4.99. In addition to the cool games available, Namco has also added Game Center integration and uploadable user data so that you may share your scores across the globe with other playing the games. Just in case you feel like bragging about your high scores. Namco Arcade is available in the iTunes App store now for free. Read More
Today, Apple held their education event in New York, and one of their announcements was iBooks 2, and update on their book store which sets textbooks in the iPad’s sights. The goal was to create portable, durable, interactive, searchable and current textbooks that still include all the great content. Some of the first demos today showed a biology textbook with graphical table of contents, interactive 3D models of cells, along with all of the usual full text. Publishers will have full control over content layout, and even be able to remotely update the text as needed. Textbooks can include quick shortcuts to glossaries and dictionaries, so you can quickly figure out foreign terms. There’s going to be full-text search with auto-completed suggestions for when you’re looking for a particular passage. Textbooks in iBooks 2 will even include little quizzes, to make sure you’ve absorbed the content from the last chapter. You can also include custom-made flash cards and notes to build your own quizzing scheme. Not sure if you want a particular iBook? They’re going to offer free samples so you can take a peek inside. iBooks may be a little on the large side… Some that we’ve seen are over 1 GB, so odds are you’ll only be downloading and syncing these over Wi-Fi. Textbooks are available starting today in their own dedicated section of the iBooks store, with prices being $14.99 or less. Wow, that’s a hell of a lot cheaper than textbooks in my day. Pearson, McGraw Hill, and Houghton Mifflin and Harcourt are just some of the initial publishing partners. The event is ongoing, so more information will be posted here as it happens. Be sure to follow our live commentary here! If you haven’t downloaded or updated iBooks yet, you can find the latest version live in Read More

Griffiin and Crayola unveiled their new lineup of kid-friendly apps and accessories this morning at CES 2012, in Las Vegas. We’ll be getting some hands-on time with the acessories later here but the apps that came along with the release are pretty awesome for kids as well. Following up on their release of Crayola ColorStudio HD, the newly announced Crayola Lights, Camera, Color! HD allows kids to snap a photo or use one of their already existing photos to “drain” the color out of it allowing them to color in the pictures as they think they should be. In addition to Crayola ColorStudio HD, Crayola also announced Crayola Silly Face Swaps HD. An app that allows kids to place their face on coloring pages and once completed they can be saved to a gallery, e-mailed, uploaded to Facebook, or printed out. Crayola Lights, Camera, Color! HD is now available on the iTunes App Store for $1.99. A free lite version is available, as well, while Crayola Silly Face Swaps will arrive on iTunes this spring. Every week a few of us from team iMore will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! I was so excited this week – I was going to pick CloudOn. But it was pulled from the App Store within hours of my installing it. Big bummer! So my number two choice this week is Talkatone, a free app that works with your GoogleVoice account. Talkatone leverages some of the most useful features from GV and brings them to your iPad. Yes, with Talkatone, you can make and receive calls directly on Your iPad. If you were hesitant to start using GV, this is a good reason to start, and if you were using it before, this will help you take advantage of all the features and get even more use from it. You can text and talk using your WiFi connection (or data if you have a 3G iPad). So your iPad finally really becomes a big iPhone! You do, of course, have to use the speakerphone when using Talkatone on your iPad. And in case I neglected to mention this before, you can use Talkatone on your iPhone too. (It’s just cooler on the iPad!) While Talkatone is free, there are several tiers of in-app purchases that will allow you to do things like add multiple Google accounts. This is something that I particularly like since you can’t use the same phone number for multiple GV accounts, so only one of my accounts ever rings/texts through – the others Read More
By Chris Parsons, Friday, Dec 30, 2011 | Given that I spread my device usage across many different platforms such as iOS, Android and yes, even BlackBerry — I find I have a few standard apps that I like to use. There is of course an exception when it comes to iOS, because I’m not overly fond of the native Twitter client on any OS but for the most part — my most used apps all revolve around productivity for me and getting things done when I really need to. Read on for my selections As mentioned, I have a real distaste for Twitter for iPhone — especially after their most recent update. With that in mind, for Tweeting on the go I make use of Tweetbot. The layout is perfect for me, and it’s nice and fast in comparison to other Twitter clients out there. I find with most Twitter clients, something is always missing. Be it push notifications, an image host or some other feature but with Tweetbot — it has everything I need, all wrapped up in a gorgeous UI. I am a dreadfully forgetful person, and to make matters worse — I’m fully aware that I am that way. So, in an effort to better keep myself organized and remember things I use Evernote. I’ll send links, notes, images and even the occasional voice note reminder to myself. For all of these reasons, Evernote is among my top used apps — if not, my most used app aside from Tweetbot. A lot of my life depends on the cloud, I store pics, documents, videos and music there. I’m a bit of a nut when it comes to having things backed up, given the amount of personal items I’ve lost over the years thanks to hard drive failures, Read More
By Andrew Wray, Thursday, Dec 29, 2011 | Lock Screen Weather is a clever app that allows you to display local weather information and graphics on the iPhone Lock screen without requiring a jailbreak. The way it works is by playing a silent track through the iPod app, then using the album art for the track to display the weather based on locations you set within the app settings. Because of the dynamic abilities of how album art is displayed in the iPod app, and subsequently shown whenever you lock your iPhone or iPod touch, this app essentially tricks the iPhone into displaying updated Lock screen weather without breaking any of Apple’s strict developer guidelines. The only drawback is, whenever you have the app running to display weather on the Lock screen, you won’t be able to listen to any music from the iPod app (or any other App Store app that uses audio output or album art, such as Pandora). This is, however, a very adept workaround and gets the job done without the need to jailbreak and install apps like IntelliscreenX. Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? By Leanna Lofte, Wednesday, Dec 28, 2011 | There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, @llofte (yes, that’s me!) asks: What app is it that I see people use with Instagram to make a collage/storyboard of more than one photo? To see what was suggested to me, follow along after the break! Diptic [$0.99 - App Store link] is an iPhone and iPad app for creating simple collages of your photos. The templates are designed in the shape of a square, so Diptic is commonly used in conjunction with Instagram [Free - App Store link]. In fact, Diptic has Instagram as an export option, making sharing to the photo social networking app a breeze. Diptic comes with 21 standard layouts and is equipped with a frame slider that allows you to customize the dimensions of the inner frames. You can also adjust the colors of the borders and give them rounded corners. In addition to Instagram, you can send your collages to Camera+, Filterstorm, Dropbox, Evernote, GoodReader, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, Posterous, or Tumblr. Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for me? Let me — and all of us — know in the comments. Having trouble finding what you need in the app store?
