‘Tis the season for giveaways, fa la la la la, la la la la. That’s right folks, it’s the most wonderful time of the year right now and what better way to celebrate the holidays than by giving away some sweet, sweet tablets. For this giveaway, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Gameloft to help celebrate the launch of The Oregon Trail: American Settler by giving away your choice of an iPad 2 or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. If you haven’t played The Oregon Trail: American Settler, it takes the classic Oregon Trail and twists it with a micro-managing sim similar to FarmVille. Apple II game Oregon Trail is turning 40 this year
Calendar16 Wed, 26 Jan 2011 02:00:00 UTC +00:00
You may not have heard about it lately, but the classic game Oregon Trail is turning 40 years old this year. Initially developed as an educational game for a history class in Minneapolis, Oregon Trail was released to the public in 1971 developed for mainframe use starting in 1971, and it was later released for the Apple II computer. As an educational tool, players take on the identity of a wagon train leader bringing settlers from Missouri to Oregon in 1848, using their problem-solving skills to help their group survive disease and food shortages along the way. Points are rewarded based on how well one did at these jobs and keeping their family members alive until the end of the journey. For fans of the game, back in August we found a clever trailer for the sweding of Oregon Trail, but for those of you looking to hearken back to a Read More

Sep 21st 2010 at 3:00PM They should consider putting more time an effort into script writing and voice acting. NOVA is cool, don't get me wrong, but the horrible story is constantly interrupting what is otherwise pretty good gameplay. Gameloft's titles are always well made? No way in heck. The most horrible, over-saturated textures possible, never an original idea, and the worst support in the world. I bought N.O.V.A. when it launched, and online multi-player has YET to be fixed. It always crashes when I click it. It has been like, a year? I can say, even though they are always delayed months and months, that EA does make better games. Heck, I've found many games even from small developers that trump anything from Gameloft. (If we forget about the iPad and it's amazingly useful display.) Gameloft's iPad games look good. And that's it. Gameloft also ports games over to Palm's Read More

In celebration of this holiday weekend, several game companies are hoping that you'll load up on some new games while loading up on burgers and hot dogs. Four of the biggest iPhone developers have discounted a selection of their games for this event, and a few other random sales are occurring as well. Holidays on the App Store mean big savings for customers. Developers including Glu, Gameloft, and Namco are putting oodles of apps on sale, with many as low as $0.99. Grab 'em while you can! We Americans celebrate July 4th as Independence Day. Usually it involves fireworks, glow-sticks, barbecues, and patriotic parades. But quite a few developers have decided to celebrate in yet another way—by putting their apps on sale. Yay, cheap apps! Yay, developers selling lots of apps! Yay, fireworks! So far we’ve got sales from EA Games, Glu, Gameloft, and Namco, as well as a few bonus apps. Hit the break for a full listing of on-sale apps and games. Namco Namco is the developer behind lots of games, not just the Pac-man titles, and they’d like us all to remember that with this crazy sale. Many games are $0.99; others are still significantly cheaper than their already-low App Store Read More

iPhone Games 2009: A Retro Gamer's Heaven
Calendar16 Sun, 27 Dec 2009 00:06:50 UTC +00:00
One of the most surprising things about the App Store is just how big a draw it has been for us old timey gamers like Blake and myself. Being in our mid 30's, we remember the days when processor megahertz were measured in the single digits and having most of these games on your home computer would have been amazing, much less on your a mobile device. That's not to say you have to be over 30 to appreciate these titles. Anyone who has been gaming at all in the past 10 years is sure to find something that appeals to them. Unfortunately, there have been some disappointments along the way, but here's a list of some good retro ports that we've run across in 2009. The Oregon Trail - This isn't quite the same game you'll remember playing in grade school, but it's close enough. The core gameplay was preserved, Read More

Just one complaint
circle_of_iron 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
After one complete playthrough I can say that this game is a blast. There's quite a bit to do, lots of paths to choose, and each of the mini games are pretty fun. I do have one complaint though, and that is the constant loading. The loading times are pretty quick, but it seems like every minute or two you're waiting 10 seconds or so for it to load the next piece. It gets irritating. If the loading could be cut down this would be a five star game. As it stands it's tons of fun and easily worth $6
Old school fan? You'll hate it. New school fan? You'd be an idiot to love it.
DJLanglois 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
Firstly, I should note that I played multiple versions of this game across a number of different Mac stations throughout my childhood. I have unbelievably fond memories of this game. I'm sure that I played through this games many dozens (and perhaps hundreds) of times as a young person.
Amazingly fun!
AndrewCarney 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
Not the same game you played in grade school but so much fun! The first game for iPhone where the tilt controls (which are used to float rivers & pan for gold) work perfect sitting, standing, laying down, or on your side! The graphics look rich & while there are many loading screens they never seem to bug you. I would like to see more depth in what items you can buy/carry & how they actually affect your travel but the game is loads of fun as is! Will keep you busy for a couple hours or just for 10 minutes waiting for the bus.
Worth it? ... not really.
MadDuk 2.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
When I bought this Oregon trail game I figured that it would have some of the same features of previous versions, but I was wrong.
Worthy Successor
Wrigley_Field 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
While still a new release and subject to crashing, this remake is great in the same spirit as the MECC originals. Though not as free-form, this version more than makes up for lack of detailed party and wagon info with a wide variety of new minigames. Hunting is just like the Apple // version, and the new minigames are actually more fun. QUICK SUMMARY: infinite ammo, generalized statuses, and comic graphics.
Well worth the price tag, though still a few glitches
stlredbird 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
This was one of the few times that a game from the app store has exceeded my expectations. It takes a fairly long time to make it all the way down the trail and there are several fun mini games that utilize the iPhone capabilities throughout. There are some issues such as crashes after leaving or entering a new area, but it starts up where you left off. Also there's a lot of loading throughout the game which can be annoying.
Fun remake of a nostalgic title
BittIes 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.2

absolutely awesome!
cinngraham 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
this game is really awesome! it is definitely worth the money! I've been buying the 99 cent games hoping they will be good, but they are all so dissapointing. this game is a steal for 6 bucks! it's entertaining, challenging, humorous, and all in all an amazing update on the much-loved classic game! you will not be dissapointed!
A classic game redone very well!
TS Autry 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
What more could one ask for in a game other than broken limbs and hunting! Excellent use of graphics and touch controls are perfect. Some minor bugs with the crashing, but those can me fixed. It is not often that a game can make you feel this nostalgic, but this game pulls it off with style. Must have for iPhone and iPod Touch.
Umm AWESOME on aisle 3!!
WSU-music critic 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
Great remake! Epic!
Fun but crashes.
Watabou 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
After playing the game for an hour, I found this game to be very entertaining and I love the minigames that pop up.
Excellent remake of a classic!
Love2Brawl&Knit 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
Enough of the old, plenty of new. If you grew up with this game, you won't be disappointed. Games are long, tribulations are relevant & it's wholesome family fun. Two thumbs up.

Love it!!! But PLEASE fix the crashes! Such a great game, but that is a big issue.

Lev_A 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
It doesn't even matter if it's good or bad, if you're 20-30 years old, you need this. You should know why! It sure helps that it's great, too.
Big let down
Boston Nick 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
Grew up playing oregon trail and was excited when i saw this iphone version bur after playing it once i doubt i would again. Its a great game for kids but for an older crowd it needs to be updated. Instead of being able to make choices the game just drags u through challenges. I remember playing the old versipn as a kid and being able to have more choices of what to bring, what supplies u need, ect. I remember being able to go hunting when ever i want to and being able to bring back as much meat as u want, but u had limited ammo, time would pass and some times nothing would even show up. Basically make things more difficult, allow for more decisions, make the whole game more mature, even the version i grew up on was more complicated then this one. Finally load times between screens takes way to long. Just not the game i was hoping for, maybe future updates will make it better.
A poor reproduction of a classic...
Tboomer 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
Gameloft has been a leading producer of games for the Iphone and Itouch this past year. I have owned several and have deleted all of them after a few days. They strike me as more expensive then similar offerings; slow to load and play; and difficult to learn the controls (ie BROTHERS IN ARMS). I first played OT about fifteen years ago using the PC version. My then six year old daughter and I both loved the game. It required planning, execution and foresight. It became so popular her friends would often join her and it became a small group exercise. How much Pemican to take? How many sets of clothing for five people? How do you repair a wagon axle when it breaks? Hours were spent planning and completing their journeys. When the kids would reach their destinations, they often felt a sense of accomplishment. Getting them to reflect on lessons learned was not difficult since they were immersed in the game. I hope young people trying this game will have an experience close to that of my daughter and her friends. Okay, enough nostalgia and longing for a bygone period and on to the present!! This version of OT might be fun for kids today, I can't really say. But where is the PLANNING phase of the game? That was half the fun. Now you simply travel along a trail with occasional stops. It's more a tactile experience then an exercise in forethought. Add to this the usual Gameloft bloatware experience, so it becomes 80% tactile and 20% intellectual. I'm going to avoid buying anything from Gameloft in the future.
Nostalgic... a bit
Its Kent lol 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.7
This game certainly harkens back to fourth grade computer class, but fails to translate into a great and fun game. When you run out of food or supplies, you can't stop to hunt or trade - you're screwed until a "random" event pops up and you get the chance to restock. Money is a very important part of the game, but crossing rivers is the only real chance to earn money, and thats gonna be put right back into buying food and supplies because, like I mentioned, you can't just stop anywhere and hunt when you need to stop and hunt. All the memories of this game are there, including the rage filled frustration at not being able to finish the freaking game!
Fun but cuts too much
phatbhuda 2.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
I wish this was an upgrade from the original Oregon Trail. Unfortunately it's not. The graphical presentation is nice, but the gameplay is much too simplified to justify the $6 price. I feel ripped off. I paid for a good game, not a pretty one. Like a previous reviewer mentioned: you have a bar of 'supplies' and a bar that measures 'food'. Instead of breaking things down in to individual parts, the game dumbs it down to two meters. The whole game is given this treatment. The game I played 20 years ago in elementary school had more complexity. It also freezes for me after it rains. The rain sound gets stuck in a loop and a minute or two later the game crashes and exits. The loading screens are definitely annoying and plentiful. Usually between 10 and 30 seconds in length between any screen change like going to a mini-game or store.
Crashes
Rpfullerton 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
The game is awesome, however it has crashed on me 5 out of 5 times that I have started a game, needs to be fixed.
Worst remake ever...
Dustjunky2000 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
I played this game many times in school. I was excited to play it on my phone. This is a LAME excuse for Oregon Trail. There's no items. Just two bars for 'food' and 'supplies'. All the characters are pointless and stupid with nothing to offer except opportunities to play minigames. Barter and trade doesn't exist, other than trading food for supplies a couple of times with the indians. Every fort is the same from beginning to end. Same ppl, same things to do. You can't choose when you go hunting. You can't itemize your food and supplies. It's awful. Like a kindergarten version of Oregon trail. No challenge. No strategy, only a handful of different hurdles that repeat over and over. What a disgrace to a fine game. Whomever made this never played any of the other ones. Do NOT BUY! I want my money back. Wish I could give negative stars.. 

Too many 5 stars for a hard core bite! Only the name was taken, this is nothing like what I know and seriously feels like my nephew (who's 4) would mabey like. I'm sorry but all who say this is great are not familiar with what the game was. If you were into the real thing you understand. 2 stars for an attempt but it's not worthy of the name.
