Read More
Few franchises have enjoyed such a cult status as the famous Monkey Island series by LucasArts. While the original trilogy is simply above all praise and the remastered versions of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge (TMA Review) have already found their way onto iOS, the PC version of Escape from Monkey Island was a flop. That’s why when Telltale announced they were going to take over the series from LucasArts, the entire Monkey Island community held its breath. And only with the release of Monkey Island Tales 1 could fans finally breath… Monkey Island Tales 1 is a hallmark Telltale episodic point-and-tap adventure. We meet Guybrush Threepwood, the mighty pirate™, already all grown up and still married to the beautiful Elaine. Fighting the evil LeChuck yet again, Guybrush blunders the mystic potion in an attempt to defeat his foe once and Read More

Back in early July, the classic LucasArts adventure game from the 90's Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge was released for the iPhone and iPad. Much more than just a simple port, the entire game features modernized graphics and an interface that has been tailored for touch screen controls. For the purists out there, you can easily switch over to the original 1991 graphics at any time with a two finger swipe, exactly like you can in the iPhone release of the original The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition [$7.99]. Earlier today, LucasArts dropped the price of the iPhone version of Monkey Island 2 from $7.99 all the way down to 99¢. Here is an excerpt from our review: Monkey Island 2 takes place after the events of the first Monkey Island where wannabe pirate Guybrush Threepwood is introduced and meets the cast of characters included in the game Read More
10 Classic PC Games That Found New Life on the iPhone
Calendar16 Sat, 21 Aug 2010 19:20:51 UTC +00:00
by Apple’s iPhone may mark a second golden age of computer gaming for a lot of reasons. The open marketplace means anyone can create a game; from major companies to just a couple of talented people in a garage. The result is a new boom in innovation, the likes of which we haven’t seen in about 20 years. Even with all the potential for innovation, maybe you still want to relive that first golden age of gaming. If you’re excited for how new tech can update the classics, then this list is for you: 10 of the greatest, most influential, straight-up classic computer games ever made, all available on and completely remastered for Apple’s handset, and in most cases also playable on the iPod touch and iPad. There are so many phenomenal PC game ports for the iPhone that we had a hard time narrowing it down to just 10. We Read More
One of my all-time favorite sequels, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, was announced to be heading to the iPhone & iPad a couple of months ago, and we even snagged some screenshots of the game’s new look. It looks like the day of the game’s release is finally upon us as the game has not only hit the PC, Xbox Live Arcade, and Playstation Network, but it’s also readily available for your iDevice of choice! Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge Special Edition has you playing as Guybrush Threepwood after he’s defeated ghost pirate LeChuck from his first adventure, The Secret of Monkey Island. Guybrush is off to find the mysterious treasure known as “Big Whoop”, and will attempt to, once again, win back Elaine’s love. Just like with The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, LucasArts did a ton of upgrading to the game. Its graphics now sport and all new Read More

Juli 2009, erreichte “The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition” (5.99 €; App Store-Link) die Apple-Plattform. Ansonsten sitzt jeder Bildpunkt dort, Read More
Few games inspire more heartfelt nostalgia than the classic LucasArts adventure games of the late 80's and early 90's. While we've still got our fingers and toes crossed that we'll eventually see similar "special edition" treatments to Maniac Mansion and/or Day of the Tentacle, we couldn't be happier that the Monkey Island series is being re-released with the level of intimate care that we've seen so far both with the previously released The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition [$7.99 / Free], and Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge [iPhone: $7.99 / Free - iPad: $9.99 / Free] which just hit the App Store mere moments ago. Monkey Island 2 takes place after the events of the first Monkey Island where wannabe pirate Guybrush Threepwood is introduced and meets the cast of characters included in the game as he seeks out the pirate leaders and attempts to prove himself through Read More
Irish animation studio Straandlooper is really pushing the suggestive limits of the App Store with the first installment of their episodic adult adventure game, Hector: Badge of Carnage [$3.99]. This point and click adventure game (or, more accurately, point and tap I suppose) puts players in charge of Hector, a police officer from the town of Clappers Wreake. The game opens with a fantastically drawn and voiced over animated cut scene which really sets the bar for the rest of the game. In the first episode, Hector is called in to do some hostage negotiation at a building being guarded by a sniper who has been picking off any policemen who enter his line of sight. Progressing through the game, like any similar adventure game, involves analyzing your environment, picking up items, and combining or using them in creative ways to overcome obstacles. For instance, getting out of the room you Read More
Don’t know about you, but I used to spend hours and hours playing LucasArts’ point and click adventure games. The first two parts of the Secrets of the Monkey Island probably took the best days of my childhood and I don’t regret for a second. As you know, the first part is already in the AppStore and the sequel is coming, too. The official name of the game, if you remember, was Secret of the Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. But the story doesn’t end there. Instead of simply porting the game to Apple’s platform, good folks of LucasArts decided to enhance the graphics, as you’re about to see from the comparison screenshots. The game looks much better, and honestly, I can’t wait to give it a try. Now that I’m thinking, I believe I just found a solid use case for the iPad – playing the good ol’ point and Read More

One of the most surprising things about the App Store is just how big a draw it has been for us old timey gamers like Blake and myself. Being in our mid 30's, we remember the days when processor megahertz were measured in the single digits and having most of these games on your home computer would have been amazing, much less on your a mobile device. That's not to say you have to be over 30 to appreciate these titles. Anyone who has been gaming at all in the past 10 years is sure to find something that appeals to them. Unfortunately, there have been some disappointments along the way, but here's a list of some good retro ports that we've run across in 2009. The Oregon Trail - This isn't quite the same game you'll remember playing in grade school, but it's close enough. The core gameplay was preserved, Read More

LucasArts' Secret of Monkey Island has been put on sale this weekend for only $3.99 (down from $7.99) [App Store]. Originally released in 1990, and having seen several revisions following the initial release including a port to the Sega CD, this Special Edition of The Secret of Monkey Island [App Store] is the best version of the game yet. It has been completely re-imagined with new art, complete voice-overs, and a new live instrumental musical score. The iPhone version really is an impressive effort. The game has also seen a 1.1 update which fixes a number of 3GS related issues (graphics, crahes), audio bugs, and tunes the control acceleration and sensitivities.   #11   11-20-2011, 04:11 AM Senior Member iPhone 4S, iOS 5.x Join Date: Mar 2009 Posts: 4,005 This game is loaded with charm, the graphics are some of the best I've seen for a town-builder, and it nails the Read More

There are few iPhone games that I will immediately buy. Most of the ones I do, however, are the classic games I played as a teenager. The iPhone/iPod touch is more than powerful enough to handle these games and it seems that there are many people like me who are keen to experience these classics again. So, here’s a roundup of modern ports of classic games. Only official ports of classic games are detailed here — clones and the like do exist but I had to draw a line in the sand. I’ve also included links to Wikipedia for those interested in the history of the games. The Video Arcade is where mainstream gaming began, and there are plenty of original ports from this era to re-live your youth shoving coins into cabinets. Calendar16 Thu, 20 Aug 2009 06:20:33 UTC +00:00
The Secret of Monkey Island was considered a gem of a game when it first came out in 1990. After seeing numerous sequels and remakes, the game has now made its way to the iPhone. It\'s known for its witty humor and rich content within the game. The game lasts quite a while and offers its players a story experience that is hard to find in many modern games. The game focuses on the main character Guybrush Threepwood, a young man who naively wants to become a pirate and somewhat abruptly sets off to realize his dream. In his adventures he meets many wacky characters and solves many puzzles around the world on his quest to become a swashbuckling pirate. The controls in this game are the only thing that I could see anyone complaining about. The game itself is a classic and an ingenious gameplay experience but the controls make Read More

Great game, disappointing controls.
LockeCole 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I LOVE the Monkey Island series, the game itself is a classic that MUST be played.
Straight port.
Jim11 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The interface is the bad part, why do I have to "mouse" drag my finger around to move the "cursor"? It should just be a point/touch... it's an iphone for crying out loud. Other than that, I mean Monkey Island is brilliant, but I feel that this could have been an improvement over the original game, but they failed.
Idea great, controls horrible
Applecyclist 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great classic game- downloaded it the second it was announced. Now I'm a bit disappointed. Yes, it's Monkey Island, but it's also a very, very lazy port. The controls are not optimized for the iPhone at all, except in cases where they added functions not in the original-like pinching to zoom in. Otherwise, you have to drag the target cursor around and tap to move to IT, really annoying. The iPhone is actually quite a perfect medium for adventure games I'm realizing, so being this close- and with the best from my childhood- is that much more frustrating. Additionally, I've experienced issues where the app doesn't even load it's "Verb Menu," which is required to interact with anything. Restarting the app usually fixes this. This is on a 3GS. Long story short: if seeing Melée Island appear with "that tune" on your phone is worth $8 BY ITSELF, go nuts and download it. If you want to play it, I'd get ScummVM and a mouse and fire it up on a computer. This is just too frustrating.
Controls need work
mikecosentino 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is perfect for the iPhone and the updated graphics and voice-overs are amazing.
YES!!!!!!
Fafner 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I will buy every Lucasarts adventure game! KEEP THEM COMING!!!! NEXT I DEMAND SAM & MAX!
Fantastic! (1.0)
jeandenis 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The controls are actually not bad. You can move the cursor around while keeping the thumb in the upper corner all the time. That way you don't block the view with your hand. Either way, no big deal. Fantastic to have the toggle-between-versions-option.
Good update on an excellent classic
jedimacfan 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice graphics, good sound effects and the ability to instantly switch to the classic game appearance. The cursor control scheme is a tad wonky and the game desperately needs a slider bar to adjust the background music. Sometimes it is too loud for the dialogue and drowns it out. Nice to see the SCUMM engine running so smoothly on the iPhone. Please do a special edition of Day of the Tentacle!
Amazing game, abyssmal controls
Duke Turing 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm so excited to see a good ol SCUMM game on the iPhone I could burst... Unfortunately, the designers seem to have forgotten the iPhone has a touchscreen and not a mouse. The clunky, near unuseable controls and zoom-without-pan interface mean I won't be playing this untill it's fixed. If you guys are reading this, take a design cue from 112. Once it's fixed though, five stars, and the game is a steal at this price. I'd pay 20!
Controls are absolutely awful
Anon. Y. Mous 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was really looking forward to this game, but the controls are unbelivably bad -- basically the the touch screen is treated as a touch pad, so the position of the cursor has nothing to do with what you touch.
Great Game - Major Bug
HorusAmen 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm only giving the game 1 star to attract LucasArts' attention. The voice narration audio track fails at a certain point in the game and ceases to work properly thereafter. However, the ambient audio track continues to function. The only remedy requires re-installing the application, an iPhone restart or 'force quit' will not fix the issue. This happens to me every time I re-install, usually after or around the time when Guybrush acquires the 'fabulous idol'.
Messed up controls
Pfunk420 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Would have been 5-stars had they not mangled the controls so bad. Such a small thing but completely ruins the game.
Controls are fine but the audio bug is not!
Austin Photog 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Before purchasing I read reviews here and comments on Toucharcade stating that the controls were at best "wonky" and at worst unworkable because of all the dragging. Still, I purchased, as I've played most Lucas Arts SCUMM games except this one. At first play I was sadly in agreement with the naysayers on the controls. I then took some time to read through the "How to Play" docs and tried again. Within minutes the control was extremely intuitive and now I feel like I'm playing just as smoothly as I would be with a mouse. HOWEVER, there is a bug, witnessed by several here on the review board (and unfortunately myself) that kills in game audio.
Monkey Marvel
Yahoo Monkey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can't believe it's finally happened! Classic Lucasarts adventures on the iPhone - about time! The art and audio are beautiful and the new interface is innovative too. After I'd figured out that the cursor is basically behaving like a trackpad in conjunction with the touch screen, I realised how ingenious the design is: I mean, if I have to use my (fat) fingers to directly tap on objects, how would I have the precision I need to pick up stuff? Hopefully now that someone has cracked an adventure game interface for iPhone we'll see more and more of them!
OMG MONKEYS!!!
AnimeGamer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
i'm proud to say that i have bought this game Monkey Island on the iPod Touch/iPhone is one of the greatest ideas since the wheel! one of the best point and click games meets the best point and click interface! buy it! play it! and beware of LeChuck!
Amazing !!!
Paulyb18 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is one of the best iPhone games I have played. The game is so easy to control. Graphics and sounds are fantastic and the hot swap feature is really cool. Well worth the price for a full version game with both original artwork and the special edition. I can't belive this is available already. Lucas arts is amazing to one remake this awesome title, two to do it well and faithful to the original game, and 3 to release it on steam xbl and now on app store. Thanks again and let's hope for more Lucas arts adventures remade and brought to app store. Hint hint mi2. :)

Blast from the past
Poostaru 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Really neat game. Being able to switch between classic and updated versions on the fly (by swiping two fingers across the screen) is really neat. The controls aren't as bad as people are making them out to be. You can move the cursor around on screen without actually having to cover it up with your finger, which allows you to be much more precise. The only thing sort of annoying is having to double-tap to do things. Sometimes it doesn't read both taps. The game is definitely worth the price, especially for those new to the game.
Bring them all
Sabre31 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Please bring all of your old classic games to iPhone. You guys are sitting on a treasure chest of old classic software that can make you lots of money. Please port The Dig that game rocked as well as the others and even x-wing vs tie fighter that would be so cool. Nice work on this release.
My Favorite Game of All Time

I grew up playing the original on PC. For those that haven't experienced it, I think you'll find that this is one of the best told, not to mention funniest, stories out there. It's the standard by which all other adventure games are judged, in my opinion!

Important install tip: At over 350 MB, this app install needs a lot of scratch space, and ths installer may hang or take a hugely large block of time. So, in smaller (8 GB devices), make sure there is WELL OVER 1 GB, maybe 2 GB, of empty memory in your phone. Temporarily delete a movie or several audio albums by unchecking them in their playlist tabs before selecting the Monkey Island App for installation and Apply or Sync. Then select the big app for inclusion, and Sync, again. When it's done, you can reinstall the deleted video/audio titles can be re-selected and Sync'ed (again again) back to the phone. Nothing lost but time.
Great, but has a bug

The new graphics and controls are great, but I've run into a bug that kills the new character dialogue on my phone. Restarting the phone and starting a new game are of no help.
Poor controls dilute a brilliant remake

Another voice in the chorus requesting that LucasArts patch the game to include screen tap control of the cursor. The graphics, music, and voiceovers are a wonderful update from our favorite classic. What could have been a noteable contribution to iPhone gaming has been diluted by LucasArts' laziness when it came to optimizing the gaming experience on the iPhone. It can't be an oversight, since as soon as one starts playing, it's immediately obvious that the controls are just wrong. C'mon LucasArts, do right by us and update the controls!
Awesome. Seriously. You must play this.
