Daily iPad App: The Weather Channel
Calendar16 Wed, 26 Oct 2011 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
Today's Daily iPad App is The Weather Channel for iPad. The Weather Channel has had an iPad app practically since the iPad launched in early 2010, but The Weather Channel has released version 3.0 of the app, and it's a complete rewrite. Besides an entirely new UI, the new Weather Channel for iPad app borrows some features from other popular iOS weather apps like full-screen animated weather backgrounds for local weather forecasts and in-line hourly forecasts. There's also an improved mapping feature which lets you view the current weather in select cities around the world on an interactive spinning globe. Of course, having an entire cable news channel behind your app means it can also do some things the other weather apps can't, like provide instant news updates and stories, complete with a built-in tweet viewer for The Weather Channel personalities like the constantly over-excited Jim Cantore. The app also offers Read More
Hurricane Irene: 12 Ways to Track the Storm Online
Calendar16 Tue, 23 Aug 2011 20:13:20 UTC +00:00
by There’s a lot of excitement on the East Coast this week. In addition to Tuesday’s earthquake, Hurricane Irene will likely make an appearance this weekend in the Carolinas and possibly elsewhere. As I write this, Hurricane Irene is wreaking havoc on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, but who knows where it will go? The National Weather Service reported Tuesday morning that the storm is moving northwest at 10 mph. By Thursday, it’s expected to strengthen into a Category 3 storm. Predicting the path of a hurricane is notoriously difficult work. Since things can change quickly, you can, in effect, become your own meteorologist by using many of the same tools the pros use. In this day and age, there are a wealth of online tools that can help you track the hurricane. If you’re one of the millions of people in the path of Hurricane Irene, you might Read More
The apps on Delta's iPads at LaGuardia airport in New York
Calendar16 Thu, 30 Jun 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
A few weeks ago I got stuck for many hours at LaGuardia airport in New York (shocking, I realize, given how smooth air travel is these days). While at the Delta terminal I saw dozens of iPads installed next to small booths, designed for travelers to recharge and possibly play a game or order some food. We knew this was coming, but I was surprised to see them there nonetheless. While the iPads were physically locked down, iOS was pretty much just stock, with the apps Delta wants you to use on one screen, and all the stock iOS apps (Mail, Safari, etc.) on the other screen. I didn't see anyone swipe to the second screen while I was at the terminal. As you can see in the screenshot below, the apps Delta has added to the iPad are: Epicurious, Google Earth, SportsTap, Checkers Free HD, CNBC Real-Time for iPad, USA Read More

Three Cool iPad Ads [MediaMemo]
Calendar16 Fri, 15 Oct 2010 10:30:08 UTC +00:00
Earlier this week we got Condé Nast’s instructions on how to make a killer iPad ad. Now, three examples of some good ones. These come from mobile ad start-up Medialets, which put together a highlight reel at my request. The video doesn’t quite do these things justice, because you really have to see them on Apple’s tablet to appreciate them. But take a look, anyway–it’s probably best if you view these in full-screen mode–and I’ll try to tease them out for you afterward: Here’s what you just saw: Again, the market for this stuff is so new that shops like Medialets are essentially starting from scratch each time they put together a tablet ad. And that means there’s no reason for these things not to be interesting–you’ve never seen them before. But eventually some of this stuff will become more standardized, just as most Web ads are. And that will make Read More
Found Footage: WNBC anchor shows Earl via iPad
Calendar16 Sun, 05 Sep 2010 16:45:00 UTC +00:00
Nobody ever claimed that the iPad was weatherproof, but that didn't stop news anchor Chuck Scarborough from taking his tablet out to the seashore. Reader Michael Neumann saw the veteran NYC broadcaster using his iPad to show weather radar during Hurricane Earl's race up the US east coast. He could have saved money on that case, though. Chuck's app of choice looks to be the Weather Channel's iPad offering, but we've seen lots of TV-centric solutions for the magical and revolutionary gadget. If you have a favorite clip or featured appearance of the iPad on the tube, drop a link in the comments below. Read More
Free App Fridays: Go Outside!
Calendar16 Fri, 09 Jul 2010 21:13:36 UTC +00:00
Posted 07/09/2010 at 1:13pm | by Florence Ion Summertime means longer days, temperate nights, and plenty of outside time. If you're not currently suffering from blazing hot temperatures or suffocating humidity, then you might be outside enjoying a ride on your bike or a leisurely stroll through the park. And chances are, you probably brought your iPhone along for the ride, too. Well, read ahead to grab hold of four free applications that can make your outside travels more pleasurable and productive. Honestly, we didn't think we'd be able to find a program that promoted physical fitness AND synced with our iPhones at the same time. The TrailRunner application is purely genius because it's a free app that helps you import statistics from various GPS devices and iPhone apps (including Nikeplus), prepare an exercise plan, keep a physical fitness diary, and look over the route from the day's trail blazing. This Read More
Let’s set aside the question of whether you should get an iPad and suppose you already bought one last weekend. You probably floated home and loaded it with a few whiz-bang apps and maybe even passed it around to your friends. At some point in all the euphoria, you may also have wondered whether this device is just a trophy or something you can actually use. Such self-doubts can be easily cast aside, providing you delve a little more deeply into the App Store than the Top 100 list — and are ready to open the wallet again. If you budget around $100 for a few new and upgraded apps, you can easily make the iPad into much more of a constant companion than something you just trot out when the neighbors are watching. Start with productivity apps, because a mobile device is most valuable when it lets you work anytime, Read More
Wi-Fi Edition: Can An iPad Replace Your iPhone?
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Apr 2010 21:52:06 UTC +00:00
Posted 04/08/2010 at 1:52pm | by J.R. Bookwalter A recent survey of new iPad owners sounding off on Twitter revealed that a whopping 26 percent were unhappy about the fact that the device couldn’t replace their iPhone. That got us thinking: What would it be like to spend a day with only the iPad? With that challenge in mind, we (mostly) stuck our trusty iPhone 3GS away for a full day and “made do” with only the Wi-Fi model of iPad. As it turns out, it’s not as difficult as you might expect. We have yet to find any iPhone apps that don’t also run on the iPad -- even seemingly more complex ones such as SlingPlayer Mobile or Skype work just fine -- so most of the iPhone functionality can already be duplicated just by installing the same apps you already use. It’s Not a Phone, Silly The biggest trick Read More
By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Apr 2, 2010 | Unlike the iPhone 3GS, the iPad doesn’t have built-in stocks, weather, voice memo, clock, calculator, or compass apps. It does, however, have the brand new iPad App Store, and yeah… there are apps for all that! Check out our picks after the break! Bloomberg for iPad [Free - iTunes link] offers not just stocks but news, company info, price charts, trends, analysis and… you get the idea. It could just be information overload on a 9.7″ screen, but that’s likely just what you stockies want! Weather Channel Max [Free - iTunes link] costs nothing (thanks to Toyota) but packs in the weathery-goodness. Full screen, customizable maps, in-motion radar, local, regional, and national video, and more make it not so much of a replacement as a escalation. Video from TV
Geckodru 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
For anyone that enjoys the weather channel on the TV this device provides all that great video content. Quite awesome.
A quantum leap over the iPhone version!
jemmons 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I really want to know who developed this app for Weather Channel because I want to hire them! While the iPhone version was clunky and loose (if completely serviceable) everything about the iPad version is tight, pretty, and FUN. This is one of the earliest examples of how iPad lets developers think outside of the box. I hope more follow this example in the future.
Awesome
Lengi123 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this app, especially in landscape mode. You can choose you exact location and then it shows up in a neat little status bar at the top. This app was a little slow, I don't really like the animated radar. But this app is perfect for someone who wants to see the weather in their location. FOUR STARS ****
Best weather app this guy has seen.
PeteMo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I downloaded accuweather and TWC to compare. TWC wins hands-down. Layout and UI were much more intuitive and easier to navigate. Adding to my bookmarks was so easy I found myself listing all the cities where I will be traveling in the next two months.
A bit crashy but an improvement
trospero 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It tends to crash and can be slow switching between views, but it is a significant improvement over the iPhone version. Keep working on it. If this doesn't work for you then try Weatherbug instead.
Nice visuals!
StuffNJunk 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
A very nicely laid out app. All the info is right at your fingertips... Nice job TWC :)
Crashed
Dave_Marsh 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Crashed for me too the moment I clicked on a button!
Crashes
DJ iPad 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Works only once, then crashes every time after that!
Great
colddragonvn 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Information is rich and in one place. I like this app!
Destroys all weather apps
steverindy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Beautifully done. Could load a bit faster. No need for anything else!
Not good
superreviewer123 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Incredibly slow app and no international weather. Useless app.
Great app
Willatl 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Loads fast for me. Other reviewers must have slow connections. I like how it shows current weather, 10-day forecast, and radar all on the main screen. Very useful.
Great
AKMan279 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great weather app for iPad!
Excellent app
Javier Unzueta 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
As a business owner, knowing the following day's, week's, and hourly forecast at any given time is beneficial in knowing how many employees to assign and what type of merchandise to put out.
Better Than iPhone Version!
James Bressi 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice upgrade from the iPhone version that takes advantage of the iPad screen size and processor. If you want a full interactive and detailed weather interaction, this is it, If you just want to quickly check weather it is not there yet as the app needs a little optimizing for speed.
Nice app but slow to load
nomisss 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I enjoyed the tv show integration, but the app loads too slowly to quickly check the weather.
Nice but slow
Alex Fire 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Interface is amazing but this app is slow and sometimes crashes
Great iPad version
Dr. Robert Rice 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Weather.com did great with everything on this with very few exceptions.
Brilliant!
mspain 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Yahoo has clearly thought through one of the top use cases for iPad - when I'm sitting on my sofa. This app integrates the appropriate information (TV Guide, video's, info nuggets, etc.) and presents it in an intuitive and fun manner. Well done!
Can't find any locations
BlueDragonfly7609 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love the iPhone app, but this one is pretty useless. It can't find my location or any location for that matter. I never get past the "Searching for your current location Please wait" screen and if I choose not not allow for it to search for my current location I cannot search for ANY location. I never get past either screen. Very disappointed.
Cool!
flori11191 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The weather artwork is stunning on the iPad! Nice one!
Weather
Nick2123 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Yeah crashing for me too...but still cool nonetheless.
Comparision to Accuweather
TheFirf 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Accuweather is much faster, however weather channel videos are not as generic (actually focuses on your area, not the whole state or region). The radar maps zoom well, but animation is slow to load (Accuweather is much faster, but not as clean when animated). Video interface is very nice (nicer than Accuweather). Videos continue to play while using other functions, which is nice. Much better detailed local forcasts (accuweather is only brief), no advertising (at least I haven't seen any yet, unlike free version of Accuweather (although it hides away nice). Final reviews: Accuweather is fast and looks pretty. Weatherchannel is more detailed, easier to navigate, better videos and ad free. A few extra seconds won't bother me and I'm sure it will get updated. Deleting Accuweather and keeping TWC.
Lousy
deiong 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This versions horribly cluttered and plain lousy. I'll stick to the paid iPhone version. Way way better
Crashing for me
Trylon 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
