PopCap, BigOven.com among those with top selling iPad apps
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Apr 2010 20:25:09 UTC +00:00
Apple's iPad hasn't even been out a week, so I'll grant you that it is a little early to be doing a deep analysis on who the winners and losers are in the app store. But I was interested to learn that two of the top 25 selling applications for the new touchscreen device -- at least as of this afternoon -- were developed by Seattle startups. PopCap Games currently ranks 14th in the paid apps category for its $9.99 game "Plants vs. Zombies HD." And not too far behind is BigOven, which ranks 24th with its app "170,000 Recipes and Grocery List." "It's pretty early to be touting stats/factoids," said PopCap's Garth Chouteau. "But you could certainly say that between the iPad launch and continuing success of the iPhone adaptation, (Plants vs. Zombies) is our hottest App Store/iTunes product of 2010 -- so far. Not bad considering Bejeweled 2/iPhone continues Read More
Just got my iPad. Now what?
Calendar16 Tue, 06 Apr 2010 02:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's pretty clear that new iPad owners are hitting the app store in droves. Books, games and movies are all flying off the virtual shelves. Since you may be suffering from sensory overload, or just looking for some ideas, here are some things I've seen that might be worth a look. I tried Time Magazine (U.S. $4.99) and Popular Science ($4.99) magazines on the iPad. The both look striking on the luscious iPad screen, but neither one really excited me enough to get me to subscribe. Time had nice use of video. Pop Sci looked stunning, but didn't have a lot of text. I think both magazines will need to come down below 5 bucks an issue to attract readers. For news, I liked Reuters News Pro, the new NPR app and the New York Times Editors' Choice app. All are free, and make clever use of the screen and finger Read More
Why Is Time Charging $5 For Its iPad App? [MediaMemo]
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Apr 2010 22:16:13 UTC +00:00
One subplot amid the iPad hype: A lot of grumbling about the cost of the apps, particularly from established media companies. Example A: Time Magazine, which is asking $4.99 a week for its app–the same price you’d pay if you bought the paper edition at a newsstand. The electronic version of the weekly does contain some bonus features, like extra photos and video clips. And some iPad users seem to be okay with it: As I type this, the app is ranked No. 16 on the iTunes “top paid” list. But to hear the digerati tell it, Time Inc. is crazy to ask users to pony up full price for a digital good that’s available for free on the Web–even for Apple’s (AAPL) iPad browser. What are the people at Time Warner’s (TWX) magazine unit thinking? I asked them and got this response: We are offering a compelling, robust and beautiful Read More
iPad Mags: Amazing or Confusing?
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Apr 2010 17:21:07 UTC +00:00
One of the iPad's biggest selling points is its potential as an e-Reader. The included iBooks application and the optional downloadable Amazon Kindle app, for example, provide hundreds of thousands of books to read, all in a relatively standard format: swipe horizontally to flip a page. iPad magazines, however, are trying to be far more creative. As we've mentioned before, the new magazine-style applications include everything from video to music within their pages, plus interactive features and clickable ads. But one problem with these innovative new 'zines is that they each do their own thing, in their own way. While this early adopter applauds the innovations we're seeing on the iPad platform, the mainstream user may find the variations confusing. First up: the heavily praised interactive VIV mag, a standout among online newstand Zinio's offerings. Early demos were decidedly exciting. This wasn't text - it was a multimedia experience! Im Heft enthalten ist die bereits verlinkte Stephen Fry-Kolumne: I have met five British Prime Ministers, two American Presidents, Nelson Mandela, Michael Jackson and the Queen. My hour with Steve Jobs certainly made me more nervous than any of those encounters. Die 64 Megabyte der Anwendung soll nur die eine Ausgabe beinhalten und keine Möglichkeit der Aktualisierung zulassen. Time Magazine kostet auf bedrucktem Papier derzeit $20 US-Dollar Read More

The Dawn of Integrity In Print on the Web Making a Triumphant Return
Cullen Factor 5.0 stars Version: 0.0.9
Not speaking for everyone, but personally I've wrestled between print and the blogoshpere; today just about anyone can build a site, and write a story, and urban myths, and "Perception becoming Reality" with witty manipulation, have been winning out over "Truth and Fact Checking". Not that I am a fan of the cover price, but I think there is an amazing value proposition offered by TIME magazine. The subscription our family had to TIME was the central focus of every dinner growing up in my house, and whenever I go home, and go into our family's study, there are still old issues in the drawer, that when I have read them over again after many years, it's inspiring to realize, the quality and consistency of the voice of TIME has endured. Freedom of expression in our country is a a great right, and I enjoy many indie blogs, yet somehow, knowing that experienced editor's are fact checking the story, really give me back that initial sticker shock, by providing some much needed integrity, that for me, doesn't seem to exist on the web, as much as I'd wish it would. Looking forward to reading this issue on my iPad, now, and especially many years in the future.
