'Slingshot Racing' Review - Mobile Racing Redefined
Calendar16 Fri, 25 May 2012 21:32:03 UTC +00:00
If there’s one thing I think we’ve all learned after 4 years of gaming with a touch screen, it’s that the simpler you can make the controls on a device that’s devoid of buttons the better. Sure, virtual buttons that mimic a traditional game controller have come a long way, and are certainly adequate for many situations. But there’s really nothing like a control scheme that feels tailor-made for a touch screen device and gaming on the go. The simplest control scheme out there is the single touch. You know, games like Tiny Wings [ $0.99 ], Canabalt [ $0.99 ], or Jetpack Joyride [ Free ], to name just a few, only really require you to touch the screen anywhere and are built around simple game mechanics to support this. That’s the same approach that Snowbolt Interactive and Crescent Moon Games have taken with their new game Slingshot Racing [ Read More
Another title from Tiny Wings creator coming this month
Calendar16 Tue, 08 May 2012 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
We haven't heard much (anything, really) from Tiny Wings creator Andreas Illiger since he released his amazing little iOS game Tiny Wings, featuring a cute bird flying through a series of random hills. Illiger was a little intimidated (not surprisingly) after his game got so big so fast, and he disappeared from the public eye, even as his title sold millions and millions of copies on the App Store. But he didn't stop working, apparently. He intends to release another game very soon. In this (very rare) interview, he says that he was shocked by all the attention Tiny Wings received. Despite making plenty of money, the only extravagance he's gone for was a new computer. He's still working alone, not with a big studio, and while he says the new game will be for iOS, everything else about the game is "a big secret." It should be out in just Read More
Tiny Wings is one of my favorite iOS games. Despite not being able to beat the last level, no matter how hard I try, I still play it whenever I have a few minutes to kill. Andreas Illiger, the guy who made the game, was recently interviewed by Flow Studio. They asked him what he was working on, and his answer is enough to get any iOS gamer excited: “I am finishing a new game right now so it is pretty stressful. I am have been on it for the last ten months and it should be done in less then three weeks. It is hard, because I am still one man band. It will be for the iOS platform again, that’s an obvious thing. Otherwise it’s a big secret, I am not telling anything to anyone.” The interview continues with stories about Illiger’s background and how successful his game is, Read More
One of the great indie success stories on the App Store was last year’s mega hit Tiny Wings [ $0.99 ] from lone developer Andreas Illiger. While the core gameplay hook wasn’t entirely unique, it was executed to perfection, and literally anybody who was capable of tapping a touch screen could pick up Tiny Wings and get hooked. Beyond just the gameplay though, Tiny Wings had that special, indescribable “something” that allowed players to connect with it on an emotional level, something we noted in our review of the game. The kind of overnight success that Tiny Wings saw must have come as a pretty big surprise to Andreas Illiger, who seemed to shy away from all the newfound attention. He released several updates for Tiny Wings during the course of the year, but remained mostly silent about any future development plans. Recently during the A Maze Festival in Berlin last Read More

2011 Best App Ever winners announced
Calendar16 Fri, 27 Jan 2012 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
Jeff Scott of 148 Apps has announced the winners for the Best App Ever for 2011, and you can review at the official site right now. Jetpack Joyride from Halfbrick was the overall winner in the iOS devision (which is a great app, but probably also benefited from actually promoting the Best App Ever vote inside the app itself). There are several other winners across various categories like Most Innovative (Codea), Most Useful (Amazon Mobile) and Best Time Killer (Tiny Wings). Scott tells us that 148 Apps received a record 1.5 million votes this year, which is three times the total of last year's choices. Before voting began, there were 287,643 nominations across 7,243 apps. This year also featured Android winners in many categories, but Scott says that iOS topped the Android votes by a factor of 10:1. The Best App Ever awards are always an excellent check of what's available Read More
Games like Monkey Quest: Thunderbow [$0.99/HD] disrupt the feel-good media narrative we like to tell about the App Store. It's a low-risk way to capitalize on experimental games like [$4.99], a place where Andreas Illiger, the one-man dev team behind Tiny Wings [$0.99], can sell thousands of copies. It's also where a giant corporation like Nickelodeon can sell us an Angry Birds [$0.99] clone to advertise its kid-friendly MMO, . It would be easier to find Thunderbow distasteful if it weren't so radical, born out of the same  mid-90s fever dream that brought us anthropomorphic turtles who were also ninjas. The hero of the game is a nameless monkey who carries a bow-and-arrow. After you beat the 30 available levels -- more are, supposedly, coming soon -- you can play a few bonus rounds with a girl-monkey who shoots lightning bolts out of her electric guitar-bow. It's incredible. My favorite thing about Read More
Woody Woodpecker has his own star on the Hollywood walk of fame, his own famous theme song and a distinctive laugh (ha-ha-HA-ha!   Ha-ha-HA-ha!), but old Woody hasn't had much press coverage in recent years. So he's trying to make a comeback, with his new iOS game published by Chillingo. Woody Woodpecker [99¢] is basically Tiny Wings [99¢] turned into a side-scrolling race between five cartoon characters across a curvaceous landscape. And like most Chillingo releases, it's nicely presented. You choose which of the five characters to race as, with each having their own "vehicle" and special weapon. You might choose Woody on a skate board launching missiles, Winnie Woodpecker on skis spraying perfume or perhaps Buzz Buzzard on his motorcycle splashing around black oil to slow down the opposition. Each character has slightly different attributes for speed, acceleration and handling, but this doesn't make much difference, as it's pretty easy to Read More
The 50 Best iOS Games of 2011: #50-1

In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Read More

Here are our top five picks for the Best Games of 2011: : Listening to some of the most prominent voices in gaming journalism right now, so-called ‘social’ and ‘free to play’ games are the scourge of the industry, and will bring forth the end of gaming as we know it, or at least a cowpocalypse. Of course, the problem is more that these games tend to be designed for nefarious purposes, to try and suck every last penny out of players’ wallets. Tiny Tower was one Read More
Mobilewalla: The Highest Rated Mobile Apps Of 2011

Mobile analytics firm Mobilewalla has ranked the top apps across all four mobile platforms for 2011, using its own ranking system known at the “Mobilewalla Score.” Instead of looking at raw user ratings, this scoring system is an algorithm that analyzes a variety of factors in addition to ratings, including an app’s position within its own category, volume, social media sentiment and more. The scores are a numerical value between 0 and 100, with a higher score indicating a more successful app. It’s an interesting way to slice the data, and gives a different picture of the app store ecosystem than typical year-end lists do. Those often look solely at download numbers and tend to include apps which have been popular for years – like Facebook, Twitter, Angry Birds, etc. Other lists, meanwhile, are editorially selected or curated, like some of those we’ve featured here. Editorial: What Makes Tiny Wings a Successful iOS Title

posted by Joe Rossignol on Saturday, December 24, 2011 at 9:18 pm.   One of the first App Store titles that I downloaded when I purchased my iPhone 4 was Tiny Wings by a German developer named Andreas Illiger. After playing the game for several months, it has become one of my most favorite iOS titles since the App Store debuted over three years ago. Even Apple has recognized the success of Tiny Wings, awarding the game with an honorable mention for App Store game of the year in its App Store Rewind 2011 annual feature. Illiger has put forth a significant amount of dedication and effort towards the development of Tiny Wings, something that is evident in all aspects of the game. Without further adieu, here are my top three reasons why I love Tiny Wings so much: 1. It’s Simple - Tiny Wings offers a very simple and uncluttered Read More

Saving Yello [99¢] from Tactile Entertainment and published by Dreamfab is a new physics-based puzzler about a pet goldfish named 'Yello'.  Poor Yello has been plucked from his bowl and dumped on the floor by his young 7-year old owner who doesn't appreciate that fish are actually water-based creatures. Yello needs your help to return to his fishbowl, within a limited number of turns, but along the way he wants to destroy some of his owners toys as revenge. Since its release, this quality game has immediately shot into the top-40 on the US App Store. You can fling Yello across the level, back towards his bowl, by stretching his tail to determine the trajectory and power, then releasing.  If you pull his tail back far enough, his little tongue pokes out, he gasps and his eyes go bloodshot from being stretched. Assuming you aim successfully, Yello eventually plops back into Read More
Daily iPhone App: Whale Trail
Calendar16 Tue, 25 Oct 2011 14:30:00 UTC +00:00
Whale Trail is a catchy little game that combines a few of my favorites lately into a cotton candy sweet package. Jetpack Joyride is in there, as you need to press on the screen to move upwards and avoid obstacles. Tiny Wings is in there too, as you keep a cute little whale flying using swooping patterns to stay up in the air. And Baby Monkey (going backwards on a pig) is in there too, as a goofy little song plays for you while flying along. In short, it's cute, fun, and pretty darn addictive. The polish on this one is excellent -- the graphics are as airy and light as the sound effects, and while the story itself is nonsensical, the controls definitely aren't. You can do some pretty precise swinging with this little whale. A frenzy mechanic will keep you chasing down the various routes available as the game Read More

Thanks to New Zealand's proximity to the International Date Line, their App Store gets updated with new releases first. These releases then propagate out to the rest of the world until finally reaching the US App Store at 11:00 PM Eastern. Tiny Wings Review

Posted 05/06/2011 at 3:30pm | by Andrew Groen When it first came out, Tiny Wings seemed to be the heir apparent to Angry Birds in the App Store. The game won over thousands of fans with its adorable concept and engaging gameplay. Well, those fires have cooled by now. Tiny Wings rarely peaks into the iTunes Top 10 lists anymore, but it's no less wonderful. Tiny Wings is really the perfect 99-cent game. It's low budget while still managing to be very good looking and extremely fun. The gameplay is very simple, but it's a challenge to truly master. You play as a bird whose wings are too small to truly fly. In order to achieve the little bird's dream of flight, you have to ramp off the hills to get some air time. The whole game is controlled with one finger. Touching the screen causes the bird to dive downward. Read More

As we reviewed in late February, Tiny Wings is an addictive game from the moment you first launch it. For a tiny app, it's powerful enough to knock the mighty Angry Birds off its perch atop the paid app list in the App Store. As of early this morning, Tiny Wings still enjoyed the top spot. And like many addictive games, you've probably found yourself humming the catchy theme over and over as well. Creator Andreas Illiger is generous enough to provide the Tiny Wings theme as a free MP3 download through his site. Even though it's free, Illiger asks downloaders to respect his copyright and not use the music in commercial works. To get a preview of the game, and its catchy music, check out the trailer after the cut. Read More
In case you’ve been under a rock, Tiny Wings [$.99] is the new App Store sweetheart, replacing Angry Birds [$.99 / Lite / HD] as the must-have bird based mobile game. The two differ, but both have one thing in common: a wonky physics engine that informs the core mechanic. In Tiny Wings specifically, you fiddle with momentum, gently pulling a fat bird downwards towards a slope in order to feed it more gas for its next abrupt flight. Now, we’ve got Pilot Winds [Free], another bird based game based on a similar idea. There is no chicken and the egg drama here, either. Pilot Winds was apparently in development before Tiny Wings launched. Pilot Winds wants you to wrap your head around momentum, too. The distinction is that your avatar isn’t a chubby bird with meager flying skills. No, in this game, you control a penguin who slides on ropes Read More
Metacritic now charting iOS games

Gaming review aggregation site Metacritic has posted that it is now charting for iOS games through its service. The site has long charted movies, music and video games as an overall average of all the scores found online (out of 100), and now it's going to do the same thing for iOS games. Metacritic will do this by aggregating all of the scores found online with a weighted average and assigning a score out of 100 to each title in the system. You can see the main iPhone page right there -- Tiny Wings is highly rated as a new title, and on the overall list, World of Goo leads the way, with iBlast Moki right behind and a good mix of games on down the list. As you'd expect from a list of iOS games, the titles are all over the place, from bigger studio releases to tiny indie downloads. Read More

Thankfully, the world you live in is full of hills that you can use to catapult yourself to new heights. Once you get a-rockin’, you can shoot up into the air and fly like never before. They go to expensive colleges, learn the intricacies of anatomy, study Phi--the whole kit and caboodle. Other devs just bust out a couple of polygons and call it a day. Is it wrong of them for experimenting? In this week's GameTime, we'll take a look at everything from enormous noses to tiny wings, and other blown up characters that are blowing up the iTunes store. Andreas Illiger$0.99iPhone Move over Angry Birds, there's a new sheriff bird-type thing in town. Tiny Wings is a game centering on a bird with -- you guessed it -- tiny wings. As the story goes, the poor bird's wings are too small to fly so it makes up for it by speeding down huge hills and launching off them like Tony Hawk with a jetpack. It's Read More
Tiny Wings iPhone App Review – Yahoooo!

Very few games that have topped the iTunes charts in the past have appealed to me, with Doodle Jump, Fruit Ninja and pretty much everything else aside from Angry Birds, remaining unplayed on my iPhone.  Canabalt was another example of a game many loved, but I despised. Tiny Wings is currently topping the Paid App charts in several countries, and I feared the same thing would happen again – I’d play once, think it was OK, then forget it and go back to an old favorite.  But this hasn’t been the case at all, as Tiny Wings is easily one of the sweetest, most adorable and most importantly of all, downright enjoyable games I’ve played in some time. You play a little bird with tiny wings, who needs gravity and undulating terrain to propel him skywards, as his only dream is to fly.  Left to his own devices, Tiny Wings flaps Read More
Tiny Wings for iOS is a simple, beautiful flying game
Calendar16 Mon, 28 Feb 2011 18:30:00 UTC +00:00
Tiny Wings is an iOS game from Andreas Illiger starring a bird, but it doesn't have much else in common with Angry Birds. For one thing, it's a lot prettier. For another, gameplay is less destructive and more relaxed. You control a bird with tiny wings who dreams of flying. All you have to do is put your finger on the screen to gather speed on the downhills, and then let go to watch your bird fly up the other side and catch air. Aside from the very satisfying game mechanics -- who doesn't love hitting ramps over and over? -- the graphics and details in Tiny Birds alone would be worth the 99-cent price of admission. The levels are colorful, and the setting sun that serves as the game's timer is a very nice touch. While it might not fuel your destructive id the way Angry Birds does, Tiny Wings Read More

By Leanna Lofte, Sunday, Feb 27, 2011 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! Ally: I tend to lean towards games that have a simple concept but keep you entertained for hours. Tiny Wings fits right into that category. It has beautiful graphics and backgrounds but the controls and game play are dead simple. You are a bird and you have one dream, to fly. But your wings are tiny. You use the hills in order to make your bird propel himself high into the sky. You’ll tap and Read More

By Kyle Flanigan on February 26th, 2011 This week, February 20-27, Angry Birds is dethroned from the number one spot by Tiny Wings, and developers get altruistic to help victims of the Christchurch earthquake and the developer of the Fruit Ninja sponsors an orchard. This week, February 20-27, Angry Birds, which just enjoyed its 250th non-consecutive day at the top of the charts, was dethroned by a new app in town going by the name of Tiny Wings. The $0.99 game was awarded 4.5 stars and the Editor’s Choice badge by 148Apps earlier this week. “This game … an absolute must-have” writes Carter Dotson, who applauds everything from the aesthetics to the music within the one-man developed game. $0.99 Released: 2011-02-18 :: Category: Games Tiny Wings wasn’t the only application to take the 148Apps Editor’s Choice badge this week. TUAW's Daily App: Tiny Wings
Calendar16 Fri, 25 Feb 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
Some games and apps picked for our Daily App become hits after they get selected, but others sort of pop out of the App Store as fully-formed hits already, and we just follow along. Tiny Wings is one of the latter. It's already a huge hit, having beat out Angry Birds for the top paid spot on the App Store. If you haven't played it yet, it's definitely worth a try. In Tiny Wings, you're a little bird with (surprise) tiny wings. By touching the screen, you can speed the cute little guy up and down hills that he can ramp off of, trying to travel as far as possible while collecting speed boosts. Like some of the best games on the App Store, it's hard to explain, but it's very easy to play. Just a moment with Tiny Wings is all it takes to figure it out. The gorgeous art Read More

It really has to have been a crazy last few days for Andreas Illiger, the developer of Tiny Wings [99¢]. His first iOS game hasn’t even been out for a full week yet, and it was just two days ago that we gave it a glowing 5 star review and have basically been glued to it since. Over these past two days, the buzz surrounding Tiny Wings has been swelling like an epic tidal wave. It’s all anybody has been talking about on Twitter, it’s been one of the busiest discussion threads in our forums, and every iOS toting device owner I’ve run into in real life I’ve recommended the game to. For having zero marketing, Tiny Wings has been doing some incredible things in the top paid charts in the US App Store. It’s been steadily climbing the last couple of days, and I was floored when I looked up Read More

Tiny Wings Are All You Need To Break Into The Top 10!
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Feb 2011 05:13:54 UTC +00:00
By Jeff Scott on February 23rd, 2011 I can't count the number of times that I've heard developers say that it's impossible to break into the top 10 anymore. Turns out you still can, you just have to do one small thing. I can’t count the number of times that I’ve heard developers say that it’s impossible to break into the top 10 anymore. You just can’t do it without a massive marketing budget, a huge name, or a giant price drop. It’s accepted that this is the case. Well it’s time for all of those negative thinking developers to eat their words. Turns out you really only need to do one thing to break into the top 10. You might even go all the way to number 2 even. That’s what Andreas Illiger has done with Tiny Wings. It’s come out of no where and jumped all the way to Read More
Tiny Wings for iOS: Discover the joy of flight
Calendar16 Wed, 23 Feb 2011 18:41:12 UTC +00:00
It may not look like much, but Tiny Wings could be the best bird-based game since that one with the pigs. I just figured out why the Angry Birds are so angry: it's because they can't fly! They have to be flung, and even then they get only a few seconds of airtime before suffering rapid-deceleration trauma. I'd be ticked off, too. In Tiny Wings, there's just one bird, and all he wants to do is fly. It's your job to help him, to keep him flying fast, far, and just ahead of ever-encroaching nightfall. Once you get the hang of the flight mechanic, you'll find yourself thoroughly, hopelessly addicted, always wanting to try "just one more time" to see if you can get a little farther. Your adorably fat little bird slowly propels himself over the hills and valleys of the various islands that serve as the game's levels. The Read More

Tiny Wings is a lovely one-button touch game for iOS, featuring a tiny bird who dreams of flying. Only problem is, his wings are too small. With each tap, you tuck in the little guy's feathers to slide up and down the hills, gaining enough momentum to fly off one of the bigger slopes when your timing is just right. Pretty visuals and an adorable soundtrack make the app well worth the .99 cents you'll have to spend to get it. [iTunes] Read More
'Tiny Wings' Review – Flap 'Em With All Your Might
Calendar16 Tue, 22 Feb 2011 12:18:50 UTC +00:00
In the iOS gaming world, sometimes the simpler a game is, the better. Sure I love more complex, “console-like” experiences, but it seems that the more boundaries a developer tries to push in adding complexity to an iOS game, the more chances that some aspects will fall short given the inherent limitations of the device. In that case, Tiny Wings [99¢] from first time iOS developer Andreas Illiger leaves very little room for falling short of expectations. Games doesn’t get much simpler than the one-touch mechanic found in Tiny Wings.  Combined with the fantastic art style, delightful music, and brilliant gameplay, Tiny Wings approaches what I would consider the perfect iOS game. In Tiny Wings you play as a bird who has been pecking a bit too much at the seed bell, making you a bit on the heavy side. You’re not able to fly like most normal birds, as your Read More

Very stylish and unique game, super duper easy but challenging at the same time. Have a feeling I'm going to be playing this a lot. To the devs: Please add new features like different terrains or things in the sky to grab every once in a while to keep the game alive, thanks.

A remarkable pick-up & play game... The stunning artwork, effortless design, along with the simple one-tap mechanic that easily satisfies both ease of play & the depth required to encourage long-term repeated play. An easy recommendation.

I'm really enjoying this one. Fly and slide a pudgy little bird through beautifully rendered, procedurally generated landscapes, in order to get as far as you can by nightfall, when your ornery little ornithopter lays down her weary head to rest. The art style is very painterly and the music is fun, but soothing. There aare a number of different islands to explore, each with their own terrain to explore. You are presented with a series of hills you must traverse, which is accomplished by holding a finger on the screen to dive down the slopes and lifting your finger to fly up and over the hills. Those are the only controls. The game is all about timing and rhythm. You have to gauge your speed and judge when to dive, in order to retain your momentum. There are goodies to collect along the way and upgrades for your nest that are obtained by completing predefined objectives. At the end of every flight, it scores you based on islands reached, number of cloudtouches, fever mode streaks, and goodies grabbed. The game is OpenFeint-enabled, offering both Achievements and Leaderboards. This game is like flying through a storybook and it captures the beauty of dreams.
Epic.

At the end of every flight, it scores you based on islands reached, number of cloudtouches, fever mode streaks, and goodies grabbed. The game is OpenFeint-enabled, offering both Achievements and Leaderboards. None of these things are what make the game good, it's the fact that the game allows you to enter the flow state. Playing Tiny Wings is very Zen-like; the feeling one gets when hitting the slopes perfectly and soaring into the sky is profound. This game is like flying through a storybook and it captures the beauty of dreams. Update: After playing the game for quite a while I started to feel a bit strange, so I wanted to give you guys a heads up. I believe the feeling was what is commonly referred to as "happiness". I stopped playing immediately, of course, just to be safe, but I'm pretty certain that's what it was. Therefore, I must offer my professional opinion on the matter, which is as follows: If every person in the world played Tiny Wings, there would be no wars.
A joy to play!
