TUAW's Daily App: I Must Run
Calendar16 Mon, 20 Dec 2010 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
The popularity of Canabalt seems to have spawned a whole genre of games on the App Store. I remain a fan of Monster Dash, and Tomena Sanner is another fascinating spin on the very basic one-button gameplay. Now here comes I Must Run, another running-style game that has you as a character running on a 2D field, trying to avoid gaps and obstacles by jumping and punching your way through. Despite the fact that this borrows a lot (if not actually everything) from Canabalt and its followers, there's no denying that "IMR" (as developer Gamelion Studios calls it in a teasing FAQ on the app's description) has its own verve as well. The style is very well done. You play a prisoner running from a prison, and there's a little more story here (some of it in the form of a motion comic) than the other games that tend to go Read More
A while back a reviewed a game called “Watermelon!” which I had deemed the oddest iPhone game I’ve played that I actually liked. Well, I think we have a new champion for that title. But isn’t Tomena Sanner “just another” one of those run and avoid everything type games? I’m trying to come up with a good analogy here but I’m drawing a blank, so let’s just say “no, it’s not”. It’s one of those games that you spend equal amount of time going “why am I playing this?” and “where have you been all my life?”, and it’s an experience you’d be remiss to pass up. Presentation Tomena Sanner has a great look to it. The style is reminiscent of Flashback, with a nice set of pastel colors and just enough details to tell what things are without being really detailed. The character designs are great, and each object that Read More

Published: January 18, 2010 Comment         You are Hitoshi Susumu, and you are late for an appointment. Luckily though Mr. Susumu is a good runner, and one hell of a dancer. Running past obstacles that he interacts with to gain time and momentum, you have to time his actions. This is done by simply tapping anywhere on the screen. Be it kicking a samurai, dunking a basketball or dancing with an alien timing is key. An action can get either good, great or miss. A miss most often inflicts damage to him, but most importantly it slows Mr. Susumu down. Great is what you are aiming for as it gets you more time to run. The large timer at the top of the screen is relentlessly ticking down, and you have to complete the level before it runs out. Once you reach the end of a level you get to Read More
IUGO and Konami Holiday Sales
Calendar16 Tue, 15 Dec 2009 19:04:52 UTC +00:00
Both Konami and IUGO have put their catalog of games on sale for the holidays. Instead of listing out every one of their games, you can browse their full catalogs in iTunes: Konami and IUGO. Instead, we're just going to highlight one of the most interesting recent titles from each developer: Forum members have been loving the demolition action of Implode. The game has been updated with new buildings, bombs and more. Now only $0.99. Wacky reaction game from Konami. Feels a bit like Canabalt meets a Japanese game show. Now only $0.99. Amazing game, and I have played (and deleted) most of the games in this category. Currently Crime City is the one I have spent most time and the only other one left on my phone, but I think this is the new champion. I have IAP disabled and I am currently level 90 in Crime City and extremely Read More
Giant Konami Sale… Again! Now Thru January 4 2010!
Calendar16 Mon, 14 Dec 2009 22:34:57 UTC +00:00
December 14th, 2009 Daniel Silva Yep it’s sale time again for Konami. Yes, all their games are on sale for $0.99. Crazy! I know right?! How many kart racers are in store? And of those how many are playable online? Konami attempts to answer both those questions with Krazy Kart. It’s the closest thing we’ll get to Mario Kart, but does it stand on its own? The multiplayer is still somewhat broken, but it’s no brainer at this price. Though it has received criticisms for having a gameplay NOTHING like the console version, MGS Touch remains to be the most sophisticated games we’ve ever played. It utilizes great graphics and rolls it with touch controls that just works for the device. Forget your knowledge about the console versions, and you’ll be fine. Full Games List: This is as cheap as these games can go, so if you’re interested in any of Read More
'Tomena Sanner' – Canabalt Meets a Japanese Game Show
Calendar16 Mon, 30 Nov 2009 18:33:41 UTC +00:00
Konami has brought their wacky Japanese reaction game Tomena Sanner to the iPhone this past week. The game which was originally released for mobile phones in Japan has made the trek to the U.S. In fact, Konami is planning on bringing the title to WiWare in the first quarter of 2010. iPhone/iPod Touch owners were greeted with the title early this past week at only $1.99. The game is most succinctly described as Canabalt meets a Japanese game show. Business man Hitoshi Susumu is behind schedule and is in quite a rush. In fact, he won't stop once he starts to run! Dashing past samurais, T-Rexes, cowboys, and all manner of wacky obstacles Mr. Susumu must get to the goal as fast as he can for the ultimate 2D dance party. One tap is all that's required as you approach objects. Simply tap and depending on your timing it'll be scored Read More

Refreshing twist on the' tap and jump for a high' score genre
danrel 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I really am digging the game so far because while it does share a lot of similarities to the other 'Run!/Canabalt' style games, this one has a certain charm about it due to the insane animations and interactions with the enemies/obstacles that you encounter. The thing that really sets this game apart from the other games I mentioned is that there are secret areas that you can get to by jumping on and off of particular obstacles at a specific time. That to me, refreshes the 'Run!' genre quite a bit.
Ridiculous fun

Just played through game. Weirder than katamari. Harder that mgs touch. And way more fun than other game I've played yet for the iPhone. Really worth the $2. Pay attention to the words scrolling across the screen if you can, they're gold. Game really does require perfect timing and the dance moves are great. It's like funky parkour. Way to go konami.

Cute style but there really isn't much here in the way of a game. Just tap the running character at the right moments. Very linear and gets boring pretty quickly. More thought seems to have been put into the quirky art direction than the gamplay. Also, the controls are poorly planned - if you happen to tap the screen away from the character (which happens often since it is a moving target) you'll end up opening an annoying pause menu. Boo, konami.
