TomTom Now With iPad Support
Calendar16 Fri, 28 Oct 2011 13:30:44 UTC +00:00
By Jennifer Allen on October 28th, 2011 A new and better interface for all too! The arrival of iOS5 has meant that many app developers have had to update their products to work with the new operating system. Fortunately many, like TomTom, have used that opportunity to improve upon an already successful app. TomTom 1.9 offers numerous changes, most notably optimization for the iPad at last. iPad optimization means that TomTom now offers a full-screen display which promises the ability to see the driving view at the same time as the Advanced Lane Guidance images that we’ve all come to appreciate from the product. Ultimately, it’s all down to space and who can resist the saying ‘bigger is better’ in this case? More room to see what’s going on has to be good for drivers as they keep an eye on the road as well as their TomTom app. The interface Read More
TomTom app coming to iPad this fall
Calendar16 Sat, 03 Sep 2011 16:10:26 UTC +00:00
TomTom has started testing its iPad app and is looking forward to launch it at some point in the fall. While we don’t have the exact launch date, we do know it won’t be released as a separate application, but the one that will work both on the iPhone and iPad. Of course, when started on Apple’s tablet, it will show a slightly tweaked interface, taking advantage of a bigger screen — which means sharpened graphics and more intuitive controls specifically developed for the iPad. And that’s about all we have at present. Plus there are words of TomTom’s Managing Director Corinne Vigreux – she said: “We have listened to our customers. In response to strong customer demand, we have optimized our TomTom App for the iPad. Now customers have one app for all iOS devices.” Not sure that many users need an iPad navigation app, but what do I know. Read More
It’s another holiday weekend coming up here in the US. The most American of holidays in fact – and this 4th of July weekend will be full of grilling and fireworks (though none in my hometown), and lovely iPhone and iOS app sales. App sales on holiday weekends seem to have become as traditional as Rudolph and his red nose or drinking Guinness on St. Patties Day. So I’m sure we’ll see lots of great deals over the next few days from EA and Gameloft and all the usual suspects. In the meantime, here’s a good price drop for navigation app fans: the TomTom U.S. and Canada iPhone app is down from its regular $59.99 to $39.99. TomTom are calling this a 4th of July sale, but their App Store page says it last for 48 hours – so it will end well before the 4th. Read More
It’s iOS GPS Appopolooza!
Calendar16 Wed, 29 Jun 2011 07:52:22 UTC +00:00
Well, at least it’s felt that way for the last week or so. There have been four updates to iOS navigation apps during that time, with Magellan’s last RoadMate refresh just behind less than a month ago. I’ve sort of been the unofficial “GPS guy” on iSource since I got here over a year ago, so I admit to feeling a little overwhelmed at this point. Well, let’s at least go through the basic new features of these latest updates to TeleNav, GoGo Navigator, CoPilot Live, and TomTom. Rest assured, however, that more coverage of these and other iOS navigation apps is coming to iSource very soon. GPS by TeleNav If this app looks more familiar than it sounds, that’s because it is basically the same thing as the AT&T and Verizon navigator apps. TeleNav is the company behind those apps, and this is their direct offering, available to anyone with Read More
TomTom bringing HD Traffic to iPhone, building Android app
Calendar16 Tue, 07 Jun 2011 15:47:54 UTC +00:00
Users can try out TomTom's HD Traffic data and routing algorithms for free at TomTom.com/livetraffic. TomTom's app for iPhone has been around for some time now and has been keeping pace with the feature set offered by TomTom's standalone navigation devices. TomTom's newest feature--HD Traffic, which debuted on the latest generation of TomTom devices--is now making its way to the TomTom app for iOS devices. We learned about TomTom's HD Traffic service back at CES 2011, but here's a quick refresher. TomTom's traffic data service, HD Traffic, is already available in 18 countries for TomTom's portable navigation devices, or PNDs. The service uses data collected from third-party fleets, third-party incident data, TomTom's established IQ routes, historical data, and algorithms, and, uniquely, every TomTom Live connected device on the road (interestingly, this data pool already includes users running the current TomTom iPhone app, even if they aren't taking advantage of the Traffic Read More
Navigation app sales and Verizon friendliness
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Feb 2011 18:30:00 UTC +00:00
There's a flurry of GPS related news today, so let's get right on with it. First, one of our favorite nav apps, Navigon, is having a pretty big sale to celebrate its milestone of 2 million sales worldwide. If you've been lusting after a Navigon app, there's a 4-day, 50% off sale beginning today. Regional versions for the US are $14.99. The US-Canada app is $29.99. The USA-only version is $24.99. Current users can take advantage of the promotion as well, with prices for in-app purchases of Traffic Live, Panorama View 3D and Zagat Survey for MobileNavigator iPhone at 25 percent off. On the TomTom front, that excellent nav solution is on sale for $34.99 for the US version. The US-Canada app is $39.99. The sale has no end date. TomTom also notes that new iPhone users on Verizon will be seeing a "connect to GPS" warning when they start up. Read More
TomTom adds Map Share so users can update their own maps
Calendar16 Mon, 20 Dec 2010 22:30:00 UTC +00:00
Here's a rather cool idea from the TomTom folks. An update available today to the TomTom iPhone nav apps (price varies depending on countries covered) allows you to edit the information on your maps and then submit those changes for others to access using what TomTom calls Map Share. This feature is also present on many dedicated TomTom GPS units. Map Share lets users edit street names, set driving directions and block and unblock streets directly on the maps, and then share those changes with the TomTom community. Once the changes are verified, everyone gets updated maps. The updates come automatically once a week, or you can force a check on demand. That feature should go a long way toward answering complaints that navigation apps like TomTom's, with built in maps, are never as accurate as apps that provide navigation data on the fly. Of course, even freshly downloaded maps can Read More
Apple Creating Navigation Software to Rival Google?
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Dec 2010 22:55:57 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 2:55 pm.   A recent set of job postings at Apple HQ suggests that they plan to develop a native navigation application for iOS. Android users have been able to take advantage of Google’s free navigation service since last year, but the only options available on iOS are expensive 3rd party apps like TomTom. Valuable knowledge: * Deep knowledge of Computational Geometry or Graph Theory * Experience with Linux server-side development of distributed systems * Experience developing navigation software A navigation app baked into iOS would be an excellent addition, but there have been rumors that Apple plans to ditch Google Maps altogether in favor of an in-house solution. It would be a tough uphill battle to compete with the established Google Maps service, but Apple has a history of wanting to be in control–even if it means starting from scratch. Read More
App Showdown: TomTom vs. Navigon
Calendar16 Tue, 14 Dec 2010 17:50:12 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/14/2010 at 9:50am | by Matthew Tilmann As blizzards and the like bear down on the nation, sometimes traveling can get a little dicey, and it can be easy to lose where you're at.  Granted, you could probably just pull over and open a map, but why not let your iPhone do that for you?  We highlight two apps that are the leaders, Navigon's MobileNavigator North America, and TomTom's U.S. & Canada app. Before we get going, when it comes to GPS apps, one of the largest questions most have is, "how much is this gonna cost me?" As of the time of this writing, Navigon and TomTom are both at $59.99 USD.  Let's get driving! When Navigon's app first came out, many were leery of it, because of the fact that Navigon's portable devices came to an abrupt halt in the US, so many wondered if the app would Read More

This is a feature in that "gee, I wish I'd of thought of that" category. The latest update to the TomTom app (version 1.5) lets you select any photo that has been geo-tagged and navigate to that location. It's great for finding that favorite picnic spot, or that great photo location. I tried the feature out today, navigating to 2 locations I had in my iPhone photo roll. In each case, the app showed a map of the location, and with a couple of clicks I was on my way. The app also now supports the iPhone 4 Retina display and the speed of the app is supposed to be faster but I didn't see anything dramatic. TomTom U.S.A and U.S. & Canada apps are currently available for $49.99 and $59.99, respectively. It's a really full featured way to navigate. Navigating to a photo is a really great idea, and I'd Read More

It’s available via in-app purchase. TomTom with U.S. maps costs $49.99 and the version that also includes Canadian routes could be yours for $10 more. TomTom U.S.A. New iPhone Software Arrives Today - Can You Run it?
Calendar16 Mon, 21 Jun 2010 15:13:15 UTC +00:00
Ahead of Thursday's release of the new and improved iPhone 4, Apple is today launching a series of software improvements collectively known as iOS 4 to owners of older generation iPhones and iPod Touch devices. iOS 4, the updated form of the iPhone operating system, brings over 100 new features, some big - like folders for apps and unified inboxes - some small - like home screen wallpapers and threaded email - and some - like multi-tasking - which your old iPhone may not be able to run at all. Announced in April during a presentation on Apple's Cupertino campus, iOS 4 delivers several long-awaited features for many iPhone users, the most important of which may be "multi-tasking," the ability for apps to run in the background while you launch and use additional applications in the foreground. Developers must first update their iPhone apps to take advantage of this new feature, Read More
TomTom has placed both of their U.S. iPhone navigation apps on sale for their lowest prices ever, which means you can give your mom the gift of navigation for Mother’s Day without breaking the bank.  It will also probably be more fun for her to use than that cooking apron you gave her last year for Mother’s Day. TomTom U.S.A. is now available for only $39.99, which is a full $20 off of its original price.  For those of you who travel to Canada every once in a while, TomTom U.S. & Canada is available for $49.99, which is also a full $20 off of its original price. TomTom recently updated both TomTom U.S.A. and U.S. & Canada with a bunch of new features, giving you even more bang for your buck.  It now includes Google local search to help you find local shops and business on the fly, real-time traffic Read More
We told you it was coming, and now it has arrived. The popular US$59.95 TomTom app is ready to hit the road with real time traffic available as an additional in-app purchase. Included with the 1.3 update at no additional charge is Google local search, revised map data, music fading, automatic day and night mode based on your location, and the ability to add locations from other applications. The real time traffic option has some nice features. Updates are received every 3 minutes. If a delay along your route is found, you will get notification from the app and automatically be re-routed. The not-so-great feature is that the traffic info will set you back $19.95 for 12 months of information. By contrast, when I reviewed the live traffic option on the Navigon app in November, it was a one time price of $19.95. The Navigon app itself is 10 bucks more Read More
During Macworld 2010 we sat down with TomTom’s Vice President of Marketing Development, Tom Murray, who provided us with some details regarding the direction the company intends to take with their iPhone app and what features were to be implemented in subsequent versions.  Two of the main features highlighted at that time were live traffic and local search, but the additional features included in v1.3 are also worthy of a mention. The linchpin of TomTom v1.3 has to be Google local search.  This free feature gives you the ability to search and find local shops and businesses no matter where you are, and navigate to them from within the app. Another exciting feature, albeit paid, is real-time traffic.  The real-time traffic in-app purchase ($19.99) provides the app with the best possible traffic information in order to give you the fastest route to your destination. TomTom v1.3 also includes brand new map Read More
TomTom v1.3 To Include Live Traffic And Google POI Search

During Macworld 2010 we had a chance to sit down with TomTom’s Vice President of Marketing Development, Tom Murray, who provided us with a couple of details regarding the company’s upcoming update to their popular iPhone turn-by-turn navigation app. The TomTom v1.3 update is set to hit the App Store in Spring and will include, among other things, live traffic and Google POI search.  The live traffic feature will be available as an in-app purchase, although the price has yet to be determined.  The live traffic feature will also be subscription-based, lasting for a total of 12 months.  Google POI search will be available for free as part of the update.  The update should contain a handful of other minor Read More

We're about to hit the big holiday travel peak, and it's a great time to survey what we've seen this year for iPhone GPS apps. GPS navigation by satellite has been around a long time, but it's never been this inexpensive or desirable. There's an explosion of choices, with competitive features and falling prices. For many of our readers, facing long trips to see family and friends, getting the right GPS app is a priority. A few words about this guide: I haven't seen or tested everything on the market, and the choices are constantly changing and updating. I've done my best to keep up and get some time on the road with each of the apps listed here. If I haven't talked about your favorite app, it's not because I don't like it, but because I can't vouch for it. Like all of you, I have some criteria by which Read More
TomTom USA iPhone App Gets Big Price Cut!
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Dec 2009 21:33:09 UTC +00:00
It seems like just about every major navigation app has announced a holiday sale, and with each new announcement it seems like each company is trying to undercut the last one. In this case, following Navigon’s price cut yesterday of their MobileNavigator app to $59.99, TomTom announced today that they’ve cut the price of their U.S. iPhone app to only $49.99! Keep in mind, however, that this is only for the TomTom USA version. Those ten extra dollars you’ll spend on Navigon will get you maps of Canada as well. To get the full TomTom U.S. & Canada, you’ll have to pony up another twenty bucks for the $69.00 U.S. & Canada version, which is still a great buy considering it used to cost about $100.00! You can find TomTom U.S. in the iPhone App Store for only $49.99 (iTunes link), or the U.S. & Canada version for only $69.99 (iTunes Read More
Those who may have been upset or disappointed by TomTom deciding to lower the price and offer a sale on just the US only version of their iPhone app can now rejoice. Well, maybe rejoice is a little strong, but at least smile a bit because the US and Canada version of their navigation app is also now on sale. The sale is currently in effect and will be running through December 28. In terms of what you will save — 30%. That means the TomTom US & Canada navigation app will set you back just $69.99. And just to recap, the US only version of the TomTom navigation app remains on sale for $49.99, which is also valid through December 28. Read More

TomTom decided last week to offer a US-only version of their iPhone turn-by-turn app for half the price of the full North American version, which made a lot of Americans happy. And Canadians, too! See, by leaving the price of the combined Canada+America navigation app at $100, TomTom wasn't penalizing Canadians by stranding them with prohibitively expensive navigation options, it was validating their worth. Congratulations, Canada! Maps of you are expensive! Or at least they were: Today, TomTom has lopped $30 clean off their original app's high (and increasingly high-seeming) price, bringing the price for the combined North American app down to $70. So actually no congratulations, Canada! Your TomTom still costs more than ours, and your maps are worth less. At least, until the end of the holiday season, when the prices of both apps should buoy back up to where they were before. This per-country pricing scheme is fascinating. Read More

TomTom delivers promised iPhone update
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Nov 2009 22:30:00 UTC +00:00
TUAW told you it was coming, and it has arrived. TomTom has updated its U.S. GPS navigation app [US$99.99, iTunes link] and added text-to-speech, advanced lane guidance, and a 'help me' feature for use in emergencies. TomTom has been a little late to the text-to-speech party, with most competitors already offering this important function. Magellan has now jumped into the game with a very nice nav app as well, and at an introductory price that undercuts the TomTom app by twenty bucks. All of the major navigation apps for the iPhone are quickly approaching feature parity. At this point, your main decision is whether you want the data streamed to your phone (as the AT&T app does), or have maps and data built into the app (like TomTom, Navigon, Magellan and some others). Looming over whatever decision you make is trying to figure out if Apple will ever allow the Google Read More
By Jeremy Sikora, Thursday, Nov 19, 2009 | TomTom has released a rather significant update to their $99 iPhone Turn-by-Turn GPS application [iTunes Link]. It seems as if they had second thoughts about omitting first generation iPhone 2G (and iPod touches) support in the TomTom car kit. It was only last month that TomTom officially stated the kit would not enable GPS with the original iPhone or iPod touch. My how quickly things change, perhaps the release of the free Google Navigation application had something to do with it… If anyone still rocking the first generation iPhone or a new iPod touch and try TomTom out, let us know how it goes! TomTom v1.2 Now Available, Includes iPod Touch Support
Calendar16 Wed, 18 Nov 2009 21:32:17 UTC +00:00
It looks like the app approval process is running right on schedule.  Just last week informed you that TomTom had submitted a much-needed update for its iPhone navigation app to Apple for approval, and now it’s available for download. The update includes everything we outlined last week, including advanced lane guidance that operates in both landscape and portrait mode, text-to-speech, a “Help Me” feature that provides direct access to emergency numbers and directions to the nearest emergency providers, customizable audio warnings, iPod player control, and updated maps, POIs, and IQ routes.  TomTom v1.2 also features improved search and route summary screens. What wasn’t highlighted last week, and what comes as somewhat of a surprise, is that the update adds support for all of Apple’s mobile devices.  Yes, even all models of the iPod touch.  This should mean that you can now turn your iPod touch into a full-fledged mobile navigation device, Read More
Magellan, another major player in the standalone GPS device market, has decided to jump on the iPhone bandwagon with their recently released Magellan RoadMate 2010 North America. Magellan RoadMate 2010 North America hits the App Store nearly full-featured, unlike some of the other turn-by-turn GPS apps out there.  It features the same interface used in Magellan’s standalone GPS devices, along with a OneTouch favorites menu, text-to-speech, lane assist, address book integration, in-app music control, QuickSpell address entry with SmartCity Search, and NAVTEQ maps. The app also contains some helpful features for when you are not in your vehicle, including the ability to save your parking location and a Pedestrian Mode.  Pedestrian Mode is able to give you walking directions to your location of choice. Magellan RoadMate 2010 North America is available in the App Store for the introductory price of $79.99, although we aren’t exactly sure at this point what the Read More

It certainly is hard to believe, isn’t it?  I had to read the headline at least three times myself before it finally sunk in.  TomTom has decided to step out of the shadows and issue a press release stating that they have submitted an updated and feature-rich version of their iPhone navigation app to Apple for approval. According to their press release via Engadget, the TomTom update will include advanced lane guidance that will operate in both landscape and portrait mode, the highly sought after text-to-speech, a “Help Me” feature that provides direct access to emergency numbers and directions to the nearest emergency providers, updated map and safetly camera database, customizable audio warnings, and iPod player control. Alright, now let all of that sink in for a second.  Are you ready for the next part?  This update is going to be absolutely free, which it darn well should be considering TomTom Read More
The long-awaited TomTom car kit for the iPhone has finally arrived at the Apple store. The hardware unit sells for US $119.95. [Sorry about the mixup. As noted in the comments, the app is an additional $50-$100 depending on your locale.] The cradle is designed to enhance the TomTom GPS app [iTunes link], which has been available since July. The kit provides secure docking and enhanced GPS performance with its own built-in GPS receiver. The car kit will charge your iPhone and give you for hands-free calling. The unit also has an audio out connector so you can play your music through your car audio system, however, the cable that enables this is not included. The TomTom solution has been criticized by some for being too expensive because the car kit plus the cost of the Tom Tom navigation application is more than $200. One could easily buy a standalone GPS Read More
I woke up this morning to what I thought was a welcoming surprise: a TomTom iPhone app update!  Yes, it’s true, TomTom finally realized that they still had an app sitting in the App Store just waiting to be updated with all kinds of glorious new features.  As it turns out, the update only addresses a couple of key issues and according to some early user reviews, those issues weren’t addressed that well. TomTom’s iPhone app hit the App Store in mid-August to many users’ delight, or at least what they thought would be a delight.  In its first iteration, the app lacked many features including the highly sought after text-to-speech functionality.  To make things worse, the app’s GPS precision was fairly lackluster and it constantly lost a signal.  Some users even complained about the way the app handled and searched for addresses, as well as its sometimes clunky interface.  But Read More
A MacRumors forum user going by the alias The Samurai has managed to get his hands on a TomTom GPS car kit for the iPhone from his local Apple Store in Glasgow, Scotland, ahead of it’s official launch. He’s posted a video unboxing on YouTube showing what comes in the box, which includes an informational packet that makes mention of an upcoming free app from TomTom. The free app mentioned in the documents appears to serve a different purpose then their TomTom GPS navigation app [App Store, $99.99], which will remain sold separately from the car kit in the US. Instead of a full GPS navigational app, the free app seems to let the user control some of the features of the GPS kit without the need for the official TomTom iPhone app, enabling functinality with other third-party navigation apps. GPS Summary – Comparison of all iPhone GPS applications
Calendar16 Sat, 26 Sep 2009 16:35:28 UTC +00:00
Last week, I worked my way through all of the currently available iPhone on-board GPS applications. I stuck with just the applications that held all of the maps on-board — meaning that you didn’t need to have a network connection to use the maps or routing. CoPilot came out as our winner as it has the best features, though some very confusing, for it’s price. But we thought it would be a good idea to do a re-cap and compare all 5 of the GPS I looked at last week and include the first iPhone GPS application, G-Map. Odds and Ends Click, Ignore, Repeat Taking a look at some of the odds and ends, some of the things that you don’t usually think of when thinking about GPS applications, these features can really add to or detract from the value of a GPS application on the iPhone. TomTom announces iPhone car kit pricing
Calendar16 Fri, 25 Sep 2009 18:00:00 UTC +00:00
The TomTom navigation app [iTunes link] for iPhone has been available since August of this year, but many TUAW readers have told us they're holding off on a purchasing decision until they can see how the announced iPhone car kit enhances the use of the app. The car kit, which includes a secondary GPS receiver and speaker as well as a mount for holding the iPhone, is scheduled to ship in the U.S. in October. TomTom International B.V. has announced the pricing for the mount, which has a suggested retail price of US$119.95 or €99.95. Several GPS blogs are already questioning the pricing, noting that the total price for the kit and app will be US$219.94, more than some much more capable personal navigation devices. On the other hand, the car kit isn't patented, so other companies may come out with less expensive options in short order. [via GPSTracklog] Read More
Navigon’s MobileNavigator for the iPhone was recently updated with text-to-speech, a feature that TomTom’s turn-by-turn app is sorely lacking, and now they have decided to pile it on with a new live traffic data feature.  The only downside is that it’ll cost you. The new feature, which is being called Navigon Traffic Live, will provide users with precise real-time traffic information pulled from over one million drivers across the country.  It will also use information from traffic cameras, speed sensors, and conventional traffic messages. The in-app add-on will be available sometime in October for the one-time price of $24.99.  However, it will be discounted for the first four weeks of availability for only $19.99. It will be interesting to see how TomTom, and every other navigation app developer for that matter, is able to respond to this recent duo of updates.  TomTom has said they will be adding these necessary features Read More
TomTom definitely has the name and the technology, but Navigon is relying on frequent updates and features to grab your attention and hopefully bring you iPhone navigation app craving users over to their side. Navigon first released their MobileNavigator app for the iPhone in July, and at that time it still lacked quite a few features.  As most iPhone and iPod touch developers due, they intended to offer all kinds of new features via updates and apparently they really, truly meant it. The recent MobileNavigator v1.2 update adds a handful of great features, but none is more important than text-to-speech.  Text-to-speech allows you to finally take your eyes off of your device and keep them on the road by reading street names aloud as you drive.  The other new features include automatic day and night display adjustment, integrated iPod control, and the ability to share your location via email. As expected, Navigon raised Read More
Developers have been complaining about the current Top Paid Apps list in the App Store since its inception.  The list ranks apps by units sold, which obviously rewards cheaper apps, specifically the $.99 kind.  In essence, there is nothing wrong with this approach, but developers have been asking for a another way to rank apps and Apple has finally delivered with a new revenue-based app list. The new Top Grossing apps list can be found on the bottom right-hand side of iTunes.  Surprisingly, the list actually popped up before iTunes 9 was made available, even before the media event took place, so someone obviously pulled the trigger a little earlier. If you take a look at the Top Grossing list, you will see quite a few apps that don’t appear in the Top Paid Apps list, the list that goes by units sold.  For example, TomTom’s navigation app is ranked third Read More
TomTom car kit delayed until October
Calendar16 Thu, 03 Sep 2009 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
Since its release in late August, the TomTom for iPhone [iTunes Link] application has received a lot of attention. When the application was first debuted at WWDC, it became one of the first products to combine both hardware and software for the iPhone. The car-kit (which provides a separate GPS module for enhanced positioning, connections for audio and iPhone charging capability) was expected to be released alongside the app. More information was then leaked after TomTom's car kit was seen on the FCC website. It looks like TomTom has decided to delay the release of the car kit until October to "deliver the highest quality innovative product." In a small note on their website's FAQ page, TomTom announced: The TomTom car kit availability was originally planned for this summer. But we have decided to take some extra weeks in order to deliver the highest quality on this innovative product. So, the Read More
If you haven’t heard, the iPhone now supports turn by turn navigation apps. These apps essentially turn your iPhone into one of those portable navigational devices which people refer to as “my navi” or “my GPS”. Overall, the apps are quite good. They work well, they look great, and having a turn by turn navigational system on your cell phone is highly convenient. The Palm Pre, unlike the iPhone which requires purchasing an app from the App Store, comes equipped with one of these apps, and it’s free with the Sprint service plan. The Pre’s app, “Telenav By Sprint”, is quite frankly the perfect turn by turn navigational app for a cell phone, and we compared the 5 most popular American navigational iPhone apps to the Pre app.  Look below for a detailed table comparing the applications on 20 different parameters. Note: For these applications you will 100% need a car charger Read More
I'm happy to report that the leading car navigation apps for the iPhone work surprisingly well. Not only that, but for the next week, there's a clear choice for best app. Until August 31st, Navigon MobileNavigator will cost $70. In my testing, it competed neck and neck with the $100 TomTom, so for the next eight days, it's the best value among the top contenders. But when they're both selling for $100, that TomTom is going to look a lot more tempting. The third app I tested is TeleNav's AT&T Navigator. It's certainly worthy, and has some connected capability that the other two apps here don't, but in the end, the economics are wrong: At $10 per month, it could become frightfully expensive, with no significant added value. These three navigators are the most reputable in the app store (hence their heightened cost). They're all based on software I've used in Read More

What a letdown..
H3lix 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
After waiting with baited breath for TomTom for the iphone I'd have to say this was a letdown for me. I downloaded it this evening and even before I took a trip I have a few issues with this version.
No street names
Matt11 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was very disappointed that the voice directions do NOT include speaking any street names. Because of this omission, I do not recommend this app.
Missing Some key features
PhantomOne 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a little disappointed. The app is missing some key features:
Mildly disappointed...
RASTERMAN 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm rating this three stars based on initial tests. It's a little stuttery, the routes calculated so far are sometimes wacky requiring some tweaking and some addresses in my addressbook come up unnavigatable. We'll see how it does over the next few days. The voices are excellent. Looking forward to the car kit.
My 3rd iPhone Navigation App
Heavy user 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've downloaded AT&T Navigator, MobileNavigator (Navigon), and now TomTom. There was so much hype around the TomTom application that I had to try it out.
Navigon vs. Tomtom
Crawler5000 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just downloaded! It took 24 minutes to download and 18 minutes to install (total 42 mind on Wifi) I bought Navigon and have to say it works fine - but will need a little touch here and there to make it perfect. I will test drive Tomtom soon and will write a review! Just went through the set up - I have to say it's better then the others including Navigon. Funny, Tomtom couldn't find the Tellus Museum - Navigon does. So I say Navigon is more up-to-date on POI. Ok, just Test drive. Tomtom works fine, but missing some functions such as lane assistance, speed limit, elerts. Function wise, Navigon wins. Navigon design looks much better. Navigon wins again. Tomtom map is outdated and needs to be updated. Navigon wins again. Interface - tomtom is better, easier to use. Tomtom wins. Tomtom has several voice to choose from. Navigon only has one. Doesn't bother me, but Tomtom wins this category. GPS signal - both are equally slow. A draw! 15 seconds on average on both. Overall, Its a close win, but I would go with Navigon until Tomtom add lane assistance, Speed Limit, update it's map, and drop the price. Navigon needs to work on polishing the app.
Hoping for update
Celebration Guy 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good, but missing spoken street names.
So far the best
Pigsnot 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is first app that gave me credible directions. Navigon did not and CoPilot did not. That's pretty basic. You can also manually tweak the route much like Google maps. Lots to learn, but this is my navigator.
pricey software
wayne.T 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can't believe for $100 it has no text to speech! TomTom has over 2 years to work on this app for the iPhone and they couldn't deliver this from the get go. I hope they won't charge an arm for the car mount kit too! Ridiculous!
Amazing! TomTom GPS on the iPhone
Sehc 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
An absolutly amazing gps software has just come to the iPhone. I saw this was available and downloaded the first second I could. Tested it out at 1:30AM. Its phenominal! My only problem is it doesn't speek street names but I'm sure that will come in an update. But either way, I recomend this over and stand alone gps or other gps software on the iPhone. I'm glad I waited!
Meh
Sk_illed 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
For $99 this should be much better
No Spoken Street Names WHY?
MikeMacOSX 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I paid 99.00 for a Tom Tom GPS and they could implement Spoken street names. Why? Please add the ability to have spoken street names and highways. Also contacts stored in your iPhone does not seem to work. You have to manually enter every address. Need alerts for POI.
Looks and feels like home, but doesnt want to know us old timers
Waiting for Godot 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The app looks and acts like my windows mobile app with the exceptions noted in the other reviews. The most noted disappointment for me is that I dont see any way to tie to my existing account to use the voices I bought, the POIs I downloaded. How will I find my Dunkin Donuts as I drive by?
Crashes when trying to use contacts for addresses
Sparky46er5349 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
When I go to contacts to get an address - it crashes. Or it says it does not understand the address and asks if I want to enter it manually. The maps do not appear updated - the Right Aid 1/2 mile away is not located. I purchased this first thing this morning. Disappointed. Hopefully they will fix it - I pad $99 for it. Back to Navigon until they work out the kinks.
Impressive!
pikerk 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have to say, this is very impressive. I have a regular TomTom and love it, but I wasn't sure if I was going to be happy with the quality of a GPS navigator on an iPhone. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. The GPS locator is very accurate...and the speed at which you are traveling is accurate as well. Very impressive!
Great so far!
Jayskulls 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I downloaded this last night right when it came out, and tested it on my morning commute to work. It works exactly the same way as the dedicated TomTom units. It's very fast and accurate. When you're listening to music, the music will pause when turn by turn directions are given. It's also pretty great that it integrates with your address book. I've been waiting a long time for this app, and I have to say it was well worth the wait. I really don't know how their accessory will improve this already great app!
Needs a Bit More
Tony Pi 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Spoken Street Names? Not there, hopefully an update will be forthcoming.
OMG
RogersE 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Thanks TomTom this hit the spot. I am really excited to have this app on my iPhone. I had it on my Palm & Pocket PC along with a all in one device. TomTom knows how to get you there. Once again I can take my TomTom or iPhone everywhere I go. Harley for a ride, wives car with the family, at work in the campany car. TomTom gets me there. I like the TomTom feel with the iPhone feel. Can't wait for the car kit. That is going on wives car. Looking for on for my Harley. Might even get on for the wives Harley. She needs it. Ha ha keep that between us. The contact intagation is awesome. Most miss that. Lookup and ease of use is just like a TomTom. Enjoy. Eric
Hmmmm... So-So
NoahFence222 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
My excitement about this app is over-shadowed by the whole "It's about time" thing. Our huge step forward in technology (iPhone/UI) just seems to be extremely handicapped by the Giant 2 steps back in the lack of software that we had available to us three years ago. i.e. copy/paste, voice dial, turn-X-turn.
expensive
jdl8r 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
a little pricey with late voice alerts for turns...
Some good. Some bad.
Shufflebrain 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been testing the app all day today and have somewhat mixed feelings about this $99 app. I have not tried Navigon, just read the reviews, so I will not directly compare the two, but certain features that Navigon has based on other reviews are missing in TomTom.
Dissapointing but maybe room for progress
MaStAdJ 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
For turn by turn, it's great. There are a lot of glitches when I was testing it out walking around, but in the car it works like it's supposed to. Apparently walking 2 miles in hour will not make the program registar direction. I was walking backwards for about a couple blocks. Another dissapointing thing was it does not say street names!!! I almost want to get my money back but I am hoping they will update it in the near future.
Great App but some tweaking needed
Jclaud 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Downloaded this app and gave it a test run. I found the software easy to use, intuitive and packed with usable features. Voice directions were outstanding and the best i have heard actually. Ran the app along side my Garmin NUVI and the TomTom app never missed a beat. Some noteworthy omissions: No spoken street names, no lane assist and I feel it was absurd to release the app without the car kit.. Having said that, I am still happy with the download but would have waited until the car kit came out if I was to do it over again.
Very Nice. Maps could use work.
maclover009 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love the App. I have been waiting for a while. It's easy to use, POI database is fantastic, and IQ Routes is unbeatable. The only thing I request is TTS and a more detailed / stable map. When driving and turning, the maps are jumping around and have late turns which sometimes causes navigation to auto-reroute. The maps jump around while sitting still as well. It's pretty annoying and Navigon has better map quality. Voices are great as well. Improve the map quality and GPS function and I'm beyond sold.
Tomtom for iPhone!
RWillis1993 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's finally here! And it was worth the wait! The only thing missing is in-app control of the iPod.
Feature Rich App but Laggy GPS

Not that I am all about comparisons but hopefully the below is helpful between Navigon and TT.
They rushed this out - Big holes, NJ is a country

Tom Tom should be ashamed of this App
eact 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I don’t know how anyone can give this app five stars, maybe because they work for Tom Tom or they never owned a real GPS, problem I found are Spoken direction terrible, wants to route me to a longer voyage (6 minutes) I am not going to sit here a cry all day but it’s not worth a penny, and I think Tom Tom should be ashamed of this App. I want my money back.
for $99 it should be much better.
Flashbagman 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Pros:
good app, battery hog, needs better iPhone integration
jschroter 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The overall app is very nice and works well as a turn-by-turn GPS. There are a few things that need improvement in the next release:
Disappointing
cdy 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wait for TomTom to update this before buying it -- you will be disappointed.
No GPS Signal
Jerry Pete 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app seem nice, but what good is it if I can't get a GPS signal. I live in D.C. and for some reason, it won't get a GPS signal. I get a signal with Google Map and G-Map US East, but not with this app. Called TomTom customer and they suggested to reset my Iphone, I did. If that didn't work, purchase the car kit when it comes out. If I knew I needed to purchase the car kit, I wouldn't have purchased this app. I am hoping I am not the only one have GPS signal problems with this app. $99 is a lot for a program that doesn't work correctly.
Dated database, crashes and other problems. Wait for 1.1 version.
Joe Borelli 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had high expectations on downloading this App after the build-up at WWDC. On entering my home address in the "settings" section, the App crashed. I tried to enter my office address, but the street name (in existence for 9 years) was not in the database. Navigation systems in 2 of my cars, dating to 2003, include my office address in their DBs. When entering an address, the App asks for "country" but the selections are US states. Clearly, this App was rushed to market in the US. I expect TomTom to update this unpolished App shortly with add features (such as speaking the street name instead of "turn right") and bug fixes.
Setting destinations is unintuitive, tedious, annoying, and dangerous while driving.
Li0n 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I give two-star ratings when I feel an app is unusable and heading in the wrong direction.
Not bad....for version 1.0...definitely room for improvement.
Make Mine CAFFEINATED 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a TT owner as well (own the 920), and decided to get the app and leave my wife the stand alone model, as I do a lot of travel, and it'd be nice to have a GPS I'm used to, and not have to worry about taking extra equipment.
Pretty darn good!

Best GPS App To Date
toyboy1980 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been using Navigon since it came out, but I just got the TOM TOM App this morning. So far, I think it blows Navigon out of the water. Firstly, it actually has my street. I live in an extremely new neighborhood. Just me and two other people are moved in. Navigon didn't have it. Of course, that's just the difference between Navteq and TeleAtlas map data. Google Maps also uses TeleAtlas. It sure seems to be the superior choice, at least in Nashville, TN anyway. Some people were complaining about the UI. Really? To me, it is WAY easier to get what you want than Navigon. Count me as a satisfied TOM TOM customer.
Poor GPS reception
need to sync 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I live near DC and this app can not seem to get a GPS signal. Google maps gets a signal fine. Another reviewer in this area reported the same thing. Not very useful if it can not get signal. Also, so far the app can't seem to understand the addresses in my address book. Google can understand them fine. Clearly the app needs some work to be worth the money.
No Traffic Data!!!
Dedmiston 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
No Traffic Data!!! I can't believe the TomTom iPhone app doesn't include real-time traffic data. That means I have to swap out to the freebie Google Maps app to check traffic conditions and adjust my route if necessary. I expected this app to be a step up from AT&T's nav application, but it isn't at all. The app feels like a rush to market just to get something out there. I sure hope that v2.0 is better, but I'm not looking forward to installing updates to a 1.2GB app. This is very disappointing for a $99 product. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Good, but needs some work
jeff87xp 3.0 stars Version: 1.0

Tomtom Vs Navigon review

After waiting for such a long time I was disappointed to see the first version of tomtom today. It was a letdown by all standards.
Buy a stand alone
KansasDoc 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had hoped this would solve my too many gadget problem. It doesn't. The screen does not act the same as most iphone apps with expansion and collapse. It does not recognize zip codes and addresses in contacts, they must be re entered. It is not worth $107 (tax).
A Review from Someone New to GPS
bpeacock 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
I have been indecisive for weeks now. Torn between Navigon and TomTom. I ended up writing TomTom to get some answers about what is most negatively reviewed here. He could not tell me what is coming in future updates, but that app updates will be free, as they are for all TomTom devices. Map updates will have a cost associated with it, but at this time they haven't worked out a solution to updating them from TomTom Home (where you pay $9.95 a quarter).
Fixed MANY, but not quite all bugs. Would now recommend.
FlyCadet 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
I've been playing with this upgrade since yesterday.
better gps accuracy
Bill_Blake 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
Update for 1.2 plus car kit: the car kit is available at a discount on various web sites, and it's a very elegant design and in my experience so far makes the gps reception rock solid. I had to delete and reinstall the 1.2 app update to get it to work, but then it worked fine. You have to select the computerized voice ("Samantha" in the US) to get text-to-speech, and it sounds a bit robotic, but that's not surprising. The ipod controls are nicely accessible and straightforward, though they don't allow you to fiddle with playlists (which I've found not to be a good idea while driving, anyway.) Magellan has announced they will release their own car kit, similar to the TomTom except it handles iphones in cases.
TomTom Delivers on all Expectations

Version 1.2 brings many enhancements including the much anticipated TTS capability. For those of you complaining it didn't, please spend a few minutes of research before you publicly cry out loud and embarrass yourselves. The TTS is enabled by selecting Change Settings->Voice->Samantha (Computer). The anonymity of the review process does not grant the right to do material damage to a company simply because you are ill informed.
Poor start!
