Recently, TUAW posted about how Mobile Mouse could be used with Siri for iPhone-to-Mac remote dictation. While trying it out, I grew annoyed by transposition errors at the start of my text. So I decided to put several similar solutions to the test. What Mobile Mouse Pro ($1.99), RowMote Pro ($4.99), Edovia's TouchPad ($4.99), and Splashtop Touchpad (Free, normally $4.99) have in common is that each app provides a way to send mouse events and key strokes to your Mac. For this post, we decided not to test full screen sharing apps like iTeleport and LogMeIn due to the more extensive set-up involved. (iTeleport offers a similar $0.99 Touchpad Elite app, but we were unable to get a copy in time for this write-up.) To test them, I dictated the same text sample into TextEdit, courtesy of the iTunes Terms and Conditions. To do this, I connected each app to my Read More
Recently, TouchPad, an app for remotely controlling your Mac from your iOS device, introduced an update that allows you to dictate text through Siri on your device and have it show up on your Mac. You can use this handy little feature in combination with Alfred, a launcher application for OS X, to make it easier to open programs, perform searches and open files on your computer from across the room. You’ll need an iPhone 4S with Siri turned on to get started, of course; TouchPad by Edovia from the iOS App Store ($4.99); and Alfred running on your target Mac, which you can pick up for free from Alfredapp.com. You’ll also need to make sure Screen Sharing is enabled on your Mac, which you can set up by going to System Preferences > Sharing and then checking the Screen Sharing box. Alfred basically allows you to quickly accomplish tasks through typing Read More
Posted 08/12/2011 at 9:02am | by Cory Bohon iOS devices are great on their own, but if you're constantly using your Mac for work or other personal projects, you might feel like you're not fully utilizing your iPad and iPhone. With a few applications, however, you can transform your iPhone into a trackpad or your iPad into an external display and control desktop applications like Keynote and iTunes right from your mobile device. Read on to find out how. With an application called Air Display, you are no longer limited to your MacBook’s screen size while traveling or working. As long as you have an iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone, you can extend your Mac’s screen to these devices, giving you extra room to move windows around. Best of all, you can actually touch these windows on your iOS devices instead of having to use your mouse. To get started with Read More
TiPb Picks of the Week
Calendar16 Sun, 27 Feb 2011 23:52:28 UTC +00:00
By Leanna Lofte, Sunday, Feb 27, 2011 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! Ally: I tend to lean towards games that have a simple concept but keep you entertained for hours. Tiny Wings fits right into that category. It has beautiful graphics and backgrounds but the controls and game play are dead simple. You are a bird and you have one dream, to fly. But your wings are tiny. You use the hills in order to make your bird propel himself high into the sky. You’ll tap and Read More
There are plenty of apps in the App Store for using your iPhone to remotely control your Mac. I’ve tested plenty of remote apps for the iPhone. Some of them are ok. Some of them are unbearable. Recently, I stumbled across Edovia Software’s TouchPad app. TouchPad is by far the best, all-in-one remote app for the iPhone… TouchPad’s design aesthetics and attention to detail is stunning. The interface looks like it was designed in Cupertino. The trackpad supports portrait and landscape mode. The color of the trackpad is identical to the color of the physical trackpad on MacBooks and the Magic Trackpad, which is a nice design choice. You’re given plenty of room for your finger to mouse around. And yes, gestures are supported. TouchPad supports up to 4 finger gestures, as well as two finger scrolling and three finger swiping. You can even pinch to zoom your Mac’s screen. I noticed absolutely Read More

Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Monday, May 17, 2010 Category: iPod, iPhone, and iPad Gems: Apps, Games + More Welcome to this week’s first edition of iPhone + iPad Gems! Today, we’re focusing primarily on a collection of educational applications for kids, but we also take brief looks at several non-educational apps we’ve been testing on the iPad and iPhone over the last week or two. The top picks this week are three iPhone educational apps: Fish School, iWriteWords, and Shape Builder, but readers interested in travel, voice-assisted searching, and using their iPads as keyboards or trackpads for their Macs should read onto the second half of this article, as well. We’ve opted to hold off on rating the non-educational apps for the time being. 99 Awesome iPhone & iPad Apps You Must Download
Calendar16 Thu, 29 Apr 2010 21:56:43 UTC +00:00
Posted 04/29/2010 at 1:56pm | by Ray Aguilera With 185,000 apps and counting, the App Store is a vast warehouse of digital goodies for your iPhone (and now iPad too). But like most mega-marts, the sheer size of it all makes the good stuff harder to find. We’ve scoured the Store, and found the best apps to help you use your iPhone to it’s fullest potential. Whether it’s games you seek, or productivity tools, we’ve got you covered. As it turns out, there really is an app for that, no matter what that is. The iPhone and iPod touch brought back fun to videogaming, with developers focussing on innovation, affordability, and novelty. Touchscreen and accelerometer controls also force designers to think different, resulting in games that are a glorious collision of classic and cutting-edge gameplay and technology. --Craig Grannell Steph Thirion · $2.99 Eliss is the perfect game for the iPhone’s Read More
Here’s a cool keyboard for every iPhone-ownin user out there. It’s called Matias keyboard and it comes with a dedicated slot right above the arrow keys that fits your beloved handset in portrait mode. The idea is great – to have your phone easily accessible when typing on a computer, especially if you’re using some app which works in conjunction or exchanges data with a PC — i.e. Convertbot, Pastebot and/or Touchpad. There are, however, two problems: Which leads me to the conclusion… The idea is great, but something’s missing. Now imagine a great looking keyboard which has an iPhone docking port on it that actually charges your iPhone while you’re using a computer, and/or allows you to sync with your iTunes account. At the end, you would have a single USB cable which goes from a computer to keyboard, and the keyboard would then share the power (and connectivity with Read More

Your Mac Loves Your New TV
Calendar16 Fri, 18 Dec 2009 14:00:55 UTC +00:00
You finally purchased the TV you deserve thanks to this year’s Black Friday deals. I know I did. You may have also purchased a Blu-ray player. Congratulations on joining the high definition world. If your new Blu-ray player doesn’t offer Netflix instant streaming, though, your Mac can, along with Hulu. For the purposes of this article, I’m assuming you are using a Macbook or Macbook Pro, but the process works with desktop Macs, too, just make sure you know what kind of port your computer has. Your goal is to get both the audio and video from your computer into your TV. Unfortunately, Macs don’t have HDMI (audio and video combined) yet so we have to use two cables. Your new TV definitely has HDMI so we’ll use an adapter to make the connection. First you must figure out if you have Mini DVI or Mini DisplayPort. If you have a Read More

Incredible
Steve T-S 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
For $3.99 you've just bought yourself an awesome wireless mouse and keyboard that don't need batteries replacing every few weeks. Use it while giving presentations too. Great application, pretty and functional. Going to be a must-use for me. :-)
Good App - Needs Improvement
Yegor H. 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Connecting was very easy, but it's almost impossible to control as the cursor freezes and there is a huge lag. Two- finger gesture works fine in both: page scrolling and as control-click. Would be nice to have "tap-to-hold" function as well. The "Sensitivity" option is kind of vague, as it makes either the movement faster or slower, doesn't have anything to do with sensitivity. Also, the app unexpectedly quit several times while connecting. It would be great to have more options over the control pad in "Settings." Overall I really like the concept, but it functions poorly - fix it, and it's worth buying.
Perfect!

Setup was a breeze and works like a charm. The behavior is pretty much like my unibody MacBook's mouse pad so it's very intuitive. Very responsive too. A must have addition to your Mac!
Really Cool
Andrew R. Naylor 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a fantastic app, when I first used it I was blown away by how remarkably similar it was to using a real trackpad and is very easy to use. It's just a shame an iPhone screen isn't as nice to track on as a proper trackpad, but regardless it is perfect as a remote and I will definitely be using it in future.
Serious flaw
aaroncorsi 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is well designed but the developer ommited the ability to drag objects with the touch pad. This makes it impossible to move sliders or drag windows and objects across the screen which nearly renders this app useless. Considering its competitors cost 1/4 the price I feel like I was ripped off.
Intuitive and Elegant
Jacob Desaulniers 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
With the ability to access the keyboard, the modifier keys, navigation keys, AND a built in Front Row remote, this version of Touchpad gets everything right. As an app that gets used on a regular basis this is worth far more than just a few dollars. Edovia hit a homerun.
Awesome!
pandastyle 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
This app is great. I really like the fact that is dosen't need a 3rd party app to be installed on your computer; it uses what is already built in to the OS - Screen Sharing. Genius, really.
Wow! Perfect!
apmeyer 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
I just downloaded this application. Saw mention of it on Daringfireball. I my wife and I have our old G4 tower setup on our living room TV and we have an Apple TV in our bedroom. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse on the living room TV and it's been nothing but frustration to use. The mouse doesn't respond well and the keyboard is just cumbersom to use on the sofa. It's not like we sit in front of the TV to compose e-mails but it is necessary to enter some text once in a while when searching for something.
super easy & super slick
hispanicboy 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
found this app via daring fireball. after 10 minutes of useage i no longer need a keyboard and mouse in the living room. totally worth the price and more.
Fantastic!!!
music_keeper 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
I love using this app when I play the sims 3 because I can't have the laptop on my lap due to the heat. Now I can keep my mac on the coffee table while laying down on the couch and I won't kill my back from slouching anymore. I don't have a mouse so this is perfect. I don't think I will ever need a mouse as long as I have this app! Worth the 1.99 
No 3rd party Mac app is needed! Just uses Screen Sharing. Awesome....
WouldUdoit 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
My only complaints:
Perfect For A TV Setup Or To Make Presentations
jmdecombe 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
I love this app because it is very simple and beautifully designed, compared to others I tried before. It does everything you could hope and the interface is uncluttered. I use it especially in my media room, where I hooked up a Mac mini to an HD TV.
Amazing
Agrajag42 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Great app. Works and looks amazing. Definitely worth the price for anyone with a Mac hooked up to a TV or who give a lot of presentations. Plus there's great customer support; when I had problems with setup, I got an email back from them almost immediately with a solution.
Can't connect
Burrito Mussolini 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
I saw this app advertised on Daring Fireball and thought I'd give it a shot. I followed the instructions but the app refuses to connect to my Mac. There's no troubleshooting or FAQ on the website either.
