First look: Exogear ExoLife battery case for iPhone 4
Calendar16 Mon, 12 Jul 2010 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
One of the more eagerly anticipated accessories for just about any new phone is an extended-life battery case. One of the first out of the gate for the new iPhone 4 is the Exogear ExoLife rechargeable battery case (US$89.95). It's only available for pre-order at this time, but is expected to start shipping on July 30. The ExoLife has several features that should make iPhone 4 owners clamor for it -- a 1500-mAh Lithium-ion polymer battery that should be able to recharge the phone once, a hard polycarbonate shell to keep your baby from getting scratched and dented, a regular USB 2.0 to micro-USB cable for charging and syncing, and something called ExoClear technology to help you avoid the dreaded Grip of Death. The ExoLife also has a feature to turn off the battery when it's not being used, as well as a thin blue LED battery meter on the back. Read More

Five Apps for the cyclist
Calendar16 Sat, 08 Aug 2009 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
Apple products and the bike go together well. They seem to appeal to the same sort of folks: evangelistic, committed aficionados willing to pay any premium, to be brutally honest about it. Oh, and let's not forget, they love to talk at length about these objects of their affection at parties. You know who you are. You've got a copy of Colorado Cyclist in your bathroom. So it seems like getting the iPhone working for you on the bike would be a no-brainer. And it pretty much is. Here are five apps that I've found I like, most centered around the fact that the iPhone's built-in GPS gives cyclists the kind of on-bike information they want, and the après vélo experience they crave until the next fix, I mean "ride." From the outset, you'll need a bike mount, if you want to take advantage of these apps' functions en route. Otherwise, Read More

Worth Getting!

Just got the 3G and am in the process of looking for an APP to do some Geocaching with the family and came across this on the New iPhone App's Feed in my RSS Reader and decided since it is free and all I would try it out. I signed up for an account which I normally hate doing but it wasn't 20 mins. of question just a user name and password with an email address - Simple.
Sampling flaw
MRFMan 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I walk locally back and forth and up and down hills near me and the 30 second GPS sampling rate is totally inadequate to track either the distance or elevation of my walk. The program needs a user-set sampling rate of 1-60 seconds for this to be useful.
Great idea, but still has flaws
Gemini5 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
Definitely an interesting and useful app, but it still needs work, or the iPhone isn't capable of delivering what the app is designed to do.
Looks cool, great idea.... But.....
Todd_R 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
I like the concept and interface, but it lacks in accuracy.. As with most GPS apps like this, there are gaps in GPS response that throw things a skew. For example; in my travel down the PA Turnpike in a mostly open region, I traveled at approx 70 mph on average. Trailguru said that my max speed was 122 MPH.. Hmmm.. Not sure my car could even go that fast.. The Distance counter seemed quite accurate though.. Another concern I had (and I have a screen cap for anyone who would like to see), My total time displayed as 00:32:47. My Moving time was 00:33:56 and Stopped time was 00:00:22. Now I'm not the greatest math student, but My moving time + my stopped time = 00:34:18 (more than my total time)... Because of that simple math problem, I question the reliability. I also notice that the AVG MPH is not correct either, but that may be do to GPS blackouts. Maybe these will be fixed in a future update.. Otherwise.. I like it...
How do they do it?
MisterNL 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This program was simple to set up, and flawlessly mapped, timed and saved my run in the woods. Saves the history on the web.
Inaccurate
Bombfactoryboy 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
I sat dead still for one minute and it said I'd traveled 0.1 miles at 9 mph!
This looks promising
rayzor4u 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
But the apple limitation on running in the background is a dissapointment for apps like these. I wish apple will allow at least an app or two to run in the background. This app is excellent though. Instead of Runkeeper, which I believe is highly overpriced, I'll get this instead. I'll post more feedback as I use the app in the next few days. Thanks.
Great app
Marquess 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Lots of useful info is shown. A big drawback, though, is that the app terminates your trip if the app isn't running. There's no reason I can think of why the app can't save your last position on exit, & resume with your new position on launch (showing of course averages for the 'offline' part of the trip).
GPS doesn't work very well
Newmanj 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
I tried several tests on this thing and most of the time I was disappointed (2 out of 7 tries it worked properly). Here's the break down.
Awesome app
ngoodall 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app is a perfect example of the iphone's capability. You can track your run/walk/bike while listening to your music, upload it from the iphone, review and store you history. Almost all criticism or recommendations ignore the fact that the app is limited by Apple's restrictions, not the developer. (it is not allowed to run in the background, etc.) The developer needs to be highly praised, especially considering the app is free and the website is not full of distracting ads.
Wish it worked on EDGE
Infamous 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
There has to be a way to get a app like this work on the OG iPhones
Great app. Only one flaw.
blazer123 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app is great, and for free it is a must download. That said, I have one major issue with it. I use my iPhone as a navigation device (with the maps program). In order to use this program it must be in the foreground, and does not allow for the maps program or any maps program to be launched within it. So its almost ironic that a program designed for hikers would not allow you to access your map! For those that don't use their iPhone as their navigation device this program is perfect.
iPod touch owners are dumb.
tennesseehillbilly-yeehaw 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
How on earth do you think this app could work on the iPod touch. You would have to have a sustained wifi signal and gps. Which is virtually impossible considering the iPod touch doesn't have gps. If you want to keep complaining about app compatibility, get an iPhone. Then I will respect you.
Pretty good
CSS996 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
A useful app, and more than worth the price! :) I use it to record a four mile walk I do every morning. My gripe is that even though I walk non-stop for 80 minutes, the screen shows that I was standing still for 20 minutes. But that could be the crappy Edge network in my town. It records distance very nicely though. I'm a little disappointed that there are graphs associated with the program that I cannot view on the phone. (Flash) I do not see a link to the Trail Guru website in the app. Seems like that might be a cool feature. Or maybe it's there, and I just don't see it. The GUI is a little boring. Maybe more color or background artwork. But not at the cost of battery life. Overall, pretty darn cool, and I'll use it every day. I'm looking forward to updates. Many thanks to everyone involved in the creation of this app. You are going to help keep a lot of people motivated!
Great start to a great app!
peebsandjeebs 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I was thrilled when I first started using this on my daily runs, but now it's not as accurate as it used to be (it will stop recording mileage and tracks in the middle of my run). I'm not sure if it's because I use my iPod music while running this app or what. The website is fantastic, but needs only a little tweaking to make it more stunning. I can't wait for updates on this app, and I have great faith in it! Thanks, and keep up the great work!
Hiking
Ngleason 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've only tried it once so far and had some problems. I would set it to record, put the phone up, and when I would check it later I'd find that it wasn't tracking. I tried again using it without putting it up and it worked fine, I was even able to upload it to the website which was pretty neat. I'm just not sure if you're able to use it when the phone is locked.

It's the best free app I've got. It has everything I would need, but still needs some fine tuning. First off, the stop time isn't very accurate. I rode to work on my bike, had a ton of red lights and even pulled over to fix my chain. The app showed 20 seconds of stop time. There was more like 10 minutes. Also, the app showed my top speed as 77 mph on one ride. I'd like to think I went that fast, but let's be honest, I prob topped out at 30. Great concept. Hopefully there will be an update!
Well Done
Jbrockba 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
Very well thought out app that works great. If you are going to add sailing as a category you have to add nautical miles for distance and knots for speed. Thanks.
Great application!
Luckytomato 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I love this! It helps keep track of where I've been jogging. I like seeing the actual track mapped on the website and to know the distance I've travelled. I'm not sure that the timer that records how long I've been moving is accurate or not, but its still a great free application!
Not bad
Detroit313 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
I think that this app works great for distance and time. I had trouble with the app tracking speed at all and the app also had a hard time tracking elevation. I saw it going higher and higher by like a 100 feet and I wasn't moving. The app is a great app for free but would be better if it could run in the background while listening to music.
Needs work, not working well
dgthompson 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Speed is way off be it walking, biking, running... seems to take a good 30 seconds to catch up to my real speed. Other apps on here do not have this lag time issue.
Distance badly inaccurate
Erunner382715 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
I was running in an open field with no gps obstructions and a good signal thru google maps. I check the app after 2.5 mi according to my garmin forerunner, and this piece of junk says 1.05 mi. Nice idea, poor execution. Runners: wait for a real gps/running app.

please make something like this work for the ipod touch
Oops, shuts off!

Put music on and the app did not keep working. If I have to carry an iPod too what is the point??? Needs to run with music avalible still!!! Swap mode? K
uhmmm....errrr....

...Am I missing something here? Went for a hike and took my iphone with me hoping to use trailguru. Set my location and pressed 'start" and switched to my ipod. Seems like trailguru stopped itself when I switched rather than working in the background. Other than that, nice little app.
Site down?
Eric the >>>>>> 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Anyone know if the site is ever going to come back up?
Amazing App, turns my phone into a perfect bike computer.
webpablo 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The website could use a little work, but the app is well written and works well. I love the fact that I can upload my rides and look at the stats overlaid on a map.
Great app for the outdoorsy
PageOneApps 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
I love this app. I hike and road bike and use this every time. New features were recently added allowing you to lock the screen or take a picture as you record data and set the recording interval from 10m to 100m to capture enough data for the slow movers.
Very poor accuracy
MountainTrekker 2.0 stars Version: 2.1
I've had this app for a while buy never really used it. So since we were hiking Booth Falls outside Vail yesterday and I didn't bring my real GPS, I thought I'd finally give this a real shot. The trail is 4.2 mile round trip. We were slow moving, as I had my 3-year-old with us, but it seemed okay after the first mile , which took 45 minutes. However, 15 minutes later we had now traveled 2.5 miles and had reached an elevation of 19000 feet. By the end of our journey it let me know that we traveled 8.5 miles roughly twice the actual distance, and reached an elevation of 29000 feet, which is just shy of the peak of Everest. Ummm, I don't think so.
