Holidays on the App Store mean big savings for customers. Developers including Glu, Gameloft, and Namco are putting oodles of apps on sale, with many as low as $0.99. Grab 'em while you can! We Americans celebrate July 4th as Independence Day. Usually it involves fireworks, glow-sticks, barbecues, and patriotic parades. But quite a few developers have decided to celebrate in yet another way—by putting their apps on sale. Yay, cheap apps! Yay, developers selling lots of apps! Yay, fireworks! So far we’ve got sales from EA Games, Glu, Gameloft, and Namco, as well as a few bonus apps. Hit the break for a full listing of on-sale apps and games. Namco Namco is the developer behind lots of games, not just the Pac-man titles, and they’d like us all to remember that with this crazy sale. Many games are $0.99; others are still significantly cheaper than their already-low App Store Read More

Although this game has been available for the iPhone for a while, an iPad specific version has now been launched.  The game appears to be the same, so you get to play as any one of the South Park team as they take part in a Japanese game show.  There are 24 events in the game, plus multi-player support and a soundboard included too.  $4.99/£2.99. If you grew up in the 80’s then you’re probably at least familiar with Transformers (“G1”, as it’s now lovingly known). Science fiction doesn’t get a whole lot better than a bunch of giant robots duking it out over a planet that they really don’t have any reason to care about. When I heard there was a Transformers game coming to the iPhone I got excited, and even more so when I read it was one of the best Transformers games made to date. Of course, given the track record of the property that doesn’t mean too much, but still… As it turns out, not only are the reports right, but in this case “one of the best” actually translates to “pretty good”. It probably won’t satisfy nitty-gritty strategy fans that love loads of details, but for simpler folks like myself it hits the spot just right. Presentation The graphics are Read More
Transformers G1: Awakening review
Calendar16 Sat, 06 Mar 2010 10:11:44 UTC +00:00
Published: March 6, 2010 Comment         What would you rather be today? A robot, a plane or a big ass truck? I have always enjoyed the Transformers, and their ability to transform. From bulky heavy weapon wielding robots to agile cars and planes. The idea has always appealed to me, and even in my thirties I can find myself enjoying the transformation aspect of the Transformers. I would definitely enjoy being Optimus Prime, and transform from big rig to menacing robot whenever someone flicks me off in traffic. There have been some attempts at turning the Transformers brand into a decent game. So far those attempts have left few impressions, and I didn’t feel too enthusiastic about the new attempt by Glu. Once I understood that the new Transformers game is based on the classic animated series from the mid eighties my interest started to awaken. When the fact that Read More

Transformers G1
Calendar16 Tue, 02 Mar 2010 14:20:30 UTC +00:00
Transformers was an amazing series back in the eighties and has been revitalized by the latest Hollywood films. There have been countless games created for the Transformer series for consoles and now a game has been created for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The game is not like the console games which focused on a 3rd person action experience and instead focuses on a turn-based strategy experience. The game is very similar to the game Advance Wars if any of you are familiar with the Nintendo game. You play through a story mode which focuses on the story of the Autobots vs the Decepticons. The game makes use of the ability to transform by letting players choose to transform into vehicle mode and travel further but it requires a sacrifice. Battles in the game are automatic and have an animation of the two Transformers firing their weapons at each other. As Read More

This Week’s App Store Updates – 26th February 2010
Calendar16 Fri, 26 Feb 2010 12:36:12 UTC +00:00
Browsing the App Store this weekend?  Here are nine new or updated apps worth taking a closer look at if you are: Familiar to PC and Mac gamers, this is the port of the same game over to the iPhone.  Like the removed StoneLoops! of Jurassica, you must fire an orb into a snaking line, match up three colours together and they disappear.  There are power-ups, secrets and three different game modes to enjoy.  Wonder how long this one will last? An iPhone remix of the 80s Mac game Airborne.  As with the original, you must fend off paratroopers, tanks and missiles while conserving your ammunition and aiming well, in order to get a good high score. A streaming radio app which works over 3G, EDGE and Wi-Fi, and supports some 10,000 stations from all over the world.  GPS integration lets you find local stations and the visualizer has 8 different Read More

Transformers G1: Awakening Rolls Into The App Store
Calendar16 Thu, 25 Feb 2010 19:19:35 UTC +00:00
Transformers G1: Awakening was originally released for mobile phones back in 2008, but Glu Mobile has retooled the controls for the iPhone and iPod touch version of the game, which has just rolled into the App Store. Transformers G1: Awakening is a game designed for you hardcore Transformers fans, as it is based on the original story.  The game is a turn-based strategy affair where you must use the strengths of your Autobots to defeat the Decepticons across 17 campaign levels. In the game you are able to move your units a certain number of squares, attack foes, and capture important structures in order to obtain energon which allows you reactive, repair, and upgrade Transformers.  The game plays like most turn-based strategy games with the exception of your ability to transform into a vehicle.  This allows you to quickly travel across the map, saving precious turns, but it also leaves you Read More

As a child of the 80’s I grew up on Transformers. As a mobile strategy fanatic I’ve been in love with turn-based strategy games for years. It should come as no surprise then that Transformers G1 Awakening ranked pretty high on my most wanted list. But it also ranked fairly high on my list of concerns. After all – Transformers has had countless reinventions over the last few decades, none of which could hold a torch to the series that started it all. Likewise the series has had a number of video game spinoffs, nearly all of which have managed to disappoint. Could a Transformers game released more than 25 years after the series inception possibly live up to the expectations of series purists and strategy fans alike? As mobile gamers first learned in 2008, the answer is a resounding yes. Originally available for mobile phones back in 2008, Transformers G1 Read More
