Free App Fridays: Go Outside!
Calendar16 Fri, 09 Jul 2010 21:13:36 UTC +00:00
Posted 07/09/2010 at 1:13pm | by Florence Ion Summertime means longer days, temperate nights, and plenty of outside time. If you're not currently suffering from blazing hot temperatures or suffocating humidity, then you might be outside enjoying a ride on your bike or a leisurely stroll through the park. And chances are, you probably brought your iPhone along for the ride, too. Well, read ahead to grab hold of four free applications that can make your outside travels more pleasurable and productive. Honestly, we didn't think we'd be able to find a program that promoted physical fitness AND synced with our iPhones at the same time. The TrailRunner application is purely genius because it's a free app that helps you import statistics from various GPS devices and iPhone apps (including Nikeplus), prepare an exercise plan, keep a physical fitness diary, and look over the route from the day's trail blazing. Great idea, a little slow
mneko 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It's nice how you can add your own maps, since no one will probably ever make an app for the Madison Metro system.
Great!
larrybeo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
While any other mobile device would just let you download a .pdf directly off the Internet for viewing later, the iPhone follows the usual stupidity at Apple and does not. This App, however, adds value to the phone by allowing you to do just that! Nice work! It has the clearest maps I've seen, and anyone in Chicago should download this app.
not for Boston
Ephyoosecay 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
if you're getting this for the T, it doesn't save the image in this app. you're better off going to mbta.com and saving the T map to your library.
Nice Job!
Boujs 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Just what I was looking for!
Great concept. Almost flawless product.
Izzy9985 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The one thing I would like to do is get rid of the 2 maps that come pre-installed. I don't plan on going to Philly anytime soon so it's just an annoyance if it stays on my list. After they're deleted I'll give it 5 stars.
I agree
dodifoddiNODDY! 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This app rocks - Almost flawless - give us the ability to delete the defaults and make the maps load faster please!!!!!!!
Good but...
Waayoo 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Missing too many cities. I need the map for Sacramento.
Nice app
Briarmoon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Very nice that it services more than one city.
Awesome
Émilien 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This app is fantastatic. Easy to use. Little slowly for affiching the maps but free. If you need to have one app when you travel. This is this app. Great job guys.
where it lacks in cuteness it makes up in super functionality
eve's bayou 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
so pdf based transit maps are not exactly new. the cool thing about this app is that it locates all of them for you, you just select which ones you want to add from the major cities or can upload ANY pdf transit map (or even a picture of your dog. like who cares) and file it as a city or whatever. THE IMPORTANT THING is that the quality of these maps allows for legibility and pinch zooming. so so so many apps are blurry when you pinch them out. also, of course, because the pdf files are actually on your phone and not being pulled from a server, being on the actual train or underground does not matter.
Great App
Bruzer77 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I'm a transit map fan and this app is so nice for keeping these in one place. Renders PDF maps beautifully. Only gripe is that you can't tilt to a landscape view, would be 5 stars if not for that. Btw, you can add any pdf map, transit or otherwise, clicking 'add map' then select any transit link listed ( don't click the (map) selection). Enter the URL where the map you want is, click on the PDF link to that map, then rename as appropiate.
Awesome!
I'm The Geico Caveman 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
Please note that the author is working to fix a recently discovered bug in the program! Other than that, he's done an awesome job with this software!
Great App...
Cyroceon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
If you want to have a copy of the PDF file on your iPhone/iPod Touch and have the Official map available without carrying the paper, then this app is what you are looking for.
I agree
dodifoddiNODDY! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This app rocks - after the fixes and 3.0 it's the best app - I used it so much on my euro trip!!!
Great program
sk2370 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
The ability to load PDF maps for use on the go makes this an essential program for my iPod touch. Hint: Use another computer to view PDF maps, then enter the web address into Transit Maps. This method works more efficiently than the links in the program because those change frequently.
The Best in Class product...exactly what I want
bpcofny 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This is the best app for looking up a map. The key selling points: 1) stored maps can be retrieved offline w/o internet connection; 2) standard, official maps are used and does not require more time to study; 3) the ability for user to store map by inputting internet address allows bigger coverage.
Convenient app
Jersey Fresh 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This is a very useful app and looks great. It even allows the user to download maps from other transportation sites. The one problem I had was trying to download the NJ Transit map...kept on crashing. Other than that, I recommend this app.
Marginally useful
Libertyforall 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
The built-in Maps app has negated a lot of the value of this app, but is still useful. This app is still missing maps into Chicago via Metra. There is no ability to add maps via copy & paste, nor via the Photo library.
Works as advertised
Simian Fiction 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Since the MBTA (Boston) has failed to provide much in the way of easy mobile access to their maps and schedules (viewing a bus schedule is cumbersome and requires a good deal of scrolling), I use this app to store PDFs of the schedules, which is great because I can simply save only the schedules I want and access them offline if needed. One tip, though: when you go the MBTA's website via this app, it takes you to the mobile version of their site. You need to then click on "View full MBTA.com" and access the PDFs via the regular site, otherwise the PDFs will not be saved to the app.
Not for Phoenix
ScottsdaleSpanky 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Great idea, but doesn't work for Phoenix bus map - light rail only. Downloading map keeps crashing the app even after multiple attempts and app reloads.
Great app
NateSch 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Why is it the best apps are free. I could care less about the maps in the app. What stands out is the ability to import any PDF map out there. One tip is no caps in file name. I am going to MN and wanted Google maps offline. With the dos magic of print screen, and a little cropping in graphics program, I created some rocking PDF which I uploaded to my site. After that and a little copying and pasting I was importing maps into this program. It's great being able to zoom pdf's which I have been unable to do with PDF viewers. Programmer may want to include capabilities for multiple page support. I certainly would pay for a PDF viewer with these options.
Superb
Lgol27 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This is very useful application. I have put inside the maps of parks and trails in my area. I don't need to print them, don't need to search for them in information centers, don't need to carry them. All I need this nice app. The only thing what missing is some kind of folders mechanism, so you can group related maps together. It is pretty difficult to browse one long list of maps when you have lots of them.
w00t!
h4voCK 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
What's not to love?
Your one stop offline map/transit app
bobbytumpak 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
By far the best all in one map and transit app, plus you can upload your own pdf's.
M
Diverpawl 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Excellent and useful ability to pick own maps
Great Map app
AviDriss 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Free, and can handle huge map PDFs well.
HANDLES BIG PDF FILES / ADD YOUR OWN
CAQmd 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Best app to store detailed PDF type files, whether maps or text. Add your own map by entering the URL address - do a Google search and you're bound to find any map in PDF. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to add a PDF from your own personal library and not downloading it exclussively from a URL.
Perfect!
Brian Paq 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
This was exactly what I was looking for: a lightweight, easy to use, map viewer. Easily zoom in and out, using a full variety multi-touch gestures. Remembers where I was at which zoom level when stopping and starting app. Download maps easily from te web, and has helpful links to common transit systems.
