When it comes to travel and local apps, Android is a step ahead of other mobile operating systems. The integration of Google Maps plus free navigation is a bonus for Android users, while often-updated popular apps like Kayak, TripIt, GasBuddy and FlightTrack continue to grow in popularity. But we’ve seen a number of new kids on the block this year, so without further ado, here are five of the best Android travel apps we came across in 2011. Skyscanner is an app that’s great for booking flights from your Android device. While other travel offerings let you select hotels, rental cars, vacation packages and so on (and that’s certainly valuable for many consumers), Skyscanner keeps things straightforward by focusing solely on flights. Once you do a simple search, Skyscanner lets you get more picky, narrowing down all possible airlines, departure times and airport connections so you can choose wisely. Well-received by Read More
What happens when an iPhone/Android app startup wants to get out of its Silicon Valley offices and into local communities to meet users, support local businesses, and see the country? A killer road trip transpires, of course. My Bizzy colleagues and I packed our bags and hit the road in a rented minivan this past July to drive cross-country from San Francisco to Boston. We hosted dinners and meet-ups in 16 cities along the way. In fact, we had such a great response that some of the team hit the road again in mid-September to travel from Portland, OR, to Seattle, WA. If you hit the road, be sure to have these apps on hand. Of course I'm going to include this. After all, we created Bizzy to allow you to easily share your experiences out and about with a simple "Check Out". Others can follow your journey and add any places they may Read More

When it comes to the matter of smartphone apps, nothing can beat the iPhone App store. But the Android Market also has more than enough apps to overwhelm you. You might have your own favorite Android smartphone apps. But if you are a bit confused with all the different apps available this year, you can check out our list of 15 of the most useful ones. Considered by some as one of the top benefits of Android, the Google Voice app gives you a phone number that you can use to ring to multiple places or devices. It also lets you access all of your voicemail and text messages from the Web. Most of the smartphones available on the market comes with great multitasking capabilities. But this makes it important for all users to manage their apps so that they don’t hurt the performance of the device or its battery life. Read More

The Android Market may not have as many apps as the iPhone App Store yet, but there are still more than enough to be overwhelmed, and it continues to grow at a breakneck pace. To help you sort through them all, here is my latest list of the 20 most useful Android apps (this is an update of my 2010 Android list). I’ve also recently updated my list of the most useful iPhone apps and you’ll notice several of the same apps on both lists. Remember that I primarily had business professionals in mind when making this list and also keep in mind that this is a snapshot in time. The Android platform is developing so quickly that I guarantee my home screen will look different a month from now. Still, here’s my list of tried-and-true Android apps that I can highly recommend. Since Life Of Android started writing this guide to the top five Android travel apps, the infamous Great British rain has been lashing down relentlessly against our office windows. It’s summer and we’re either meant to be relaxing on a beach somewhere consuming copious amounts of booze or capturing the world’s foremost wonders on our smartphone camera. Instead, we’ve compiled the best apps to take with you on your summer travels. All you’ll need to use them is an Android handset and a smart data plan/free wi-fi connection. You don’t have to thank us now, just remember to send over a postcard. As a tourist there are traditionally two methods to communicate with locals who speak in a language you don’t understand. Firstly, stick to your own native tongue but enunciate every sentence very, very slowly. Secondly, read a series of phrases, which somehow never cover exactly what you want to Read More

I love taking photos wherever I go and have a particular fondness for street art, architecture, and things out of the ordinary. I carry a small point-and-shoot camera with me, but more and more, I'm reaching for my smartphone first because it's easier to share its pictures with others and also because of great apps like FxCamera. With FxCamera, you can take photos using one of five effects: ToyCam, Polandroid, Fisheye, SymmetriCam, and Warhol. Polandroid and Fisheye are my favorite, and though I try not to use effects too much, you can get some really cool-looking photos. TripIt recently sent out a press release to announce that their services and travel features are now offered in more than 300 applications.  Titles such as FlightTrack Pro, TripDeck, TravelTracker Pro, and USA TODAY AutoPilot utilize the TripIt API which provides flight tracking, mobile boarding passes, and other travel tools. Some of the more recent apps taking advantage of the API include Memolane, Planely, and TripCarbon. While not all of these apps are running on Android (yet) they do show us what is capable when companies play nice with each other and share tools. Oh, and we'd be remiss if we didn't tell you that TripIt also offers their own application for Android as well. Finding stellar Android apps isn't the easiest task, but that certainly doesn't mean they don't exist. Here's the cream of the crop. Twitter: The official Twitter app is good enough for almost everyone. Along with giving you a clean, easy way to keep track of your timeline and updating your status, Twitter for Android also has a snazzy swipe down to refresh feature. Free. Facebook: Facebook is finally decent on Android and now actually brings some unique features, namely the front page side-scroll of friend's recent photos and a pull up notification window. Free. Google+: It's Google's big soiree into social "sharing". The app has it all: a stream that shows what your friends are talking about (like Facebook), Huddle which is an easy to set up group chats (like GroupMe) and will even automatically upload the pictures you take on your phone to the cloud (like iCloud). It's Thanksgiving week -- the busiest holiday travel week of the year. And that means fighting through thousands of people, dealing (ahem) with security and finally, once you get to where you're going, dealing (ahem) with family. Android makes it easier. Maybe not painless, but easier. Uncle Fred's still gonna annoy half the family, and you might come out of the airport engaged to someone with a badge, but Android can make holiday travel a little less hellish. After the break, we share some of our favorite travel apps. If we’re missing any of yours, point ‘em out in the comments. Tripit (free): Essential for anyone who travels more than a couple of times a year. It’s a simple premise: Sign up for the free service. When an airline/hotel/whatever e-mails your itinerary, you forward it to plans@tripit.com. The Tripit service swallows the e-mail and converts it to an easy-to-follow trip itinerary. Read More

The Best Android Apps
Calendar16 Fri, 23 Apr 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
The best Android apps are getting harder to find in the increasingly crowded Android Market. We're here to help as we test and rank the top applications available for Android phones. When T-Mobile launched the very first Android-powered handset – the G1 – back in 2008, the app library to go along with it looked like a minimart beside Apple’s Walmart. But the past few years have been kind to Google. The steady release of high-profile, high-power Android handsets like the HTC Droid Bionic, Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Evo 3D have turned that initial drizzle of apps into a torrent. Now with over 250,000 apps and counting, Google’s Android Market offers applications for just about everything – sometimes making it difficult to choose. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up what we think are the best Android apps in several different categories to give new users a rough guide Read More
I’m racking up the frequent flyer miles in 2010. Las Vegas in January, San Francisco in May, and New York in August, and there are a few more flight times and hotel confirmations to track. That’s why TripIt has become a must-have app for me. TripIt is the official Android app for TripIt.com, a useful tool for managing your travel plans. Forward the confirmation email from your airline/hotel and all accommodations will become available in an easy-to-manage itinerary. Rather than constantly search through your bag to review flight information, TripIt shows departure times, hotel address, and reminders about when you to check-in/out depending on your flight time. You can also share travel plans with others. You can also manually add activities, so the app will then keep track of your meetings, dinners, events, and daily itinerary. For frequent travelers and scatterbrained individuals (guilty), TripIt simplifies the travel experience. App: TripIt Price: Read More

Urbanspoon: The steady stream of iPhone-to-Android apps continues with Urbanspoon, the app for when you're all "OMFG I can't decide where to eat." Unlike most who make the trip, however, it's actually just as good as the iPhone version. The basic gist is that if you're the indecisive type, you can set up to three parameters—price, location, type of food—shake, and it'll give you a nearby restaurant. Or you can just search for what's nearby, but that's boring. Update: Take note! It only works on the Droid and Nexus One! The Android cracks are starting to get painful. WordPress: Almost uninterestingly straightforward, unless you have a WordPress blog and want to update it for Android, anyway. It's the official WordPress app that'll let you run multiple blogs, moderate comments, and get comment notifications when people start anonymously calling you a d-bag on your blog. And, it's totally open source. TripIt: TripIt's Read More

Spyware + Fees Tripit is a data-mining business dressed up as a travel service. The free version, automatically linked to our travel agency's account, keeps a static copy of my trip data. The associated web site repeatedly asks for permission to spam, repeatedly asks to go through your e-mail, and, presumably, keeps a record of anyone I notify through the service. For just under $50/year, tripit will provide additional services that are useful to me as a traveller. Tripcase is a better deal. Give this one a miss.

The app is good but... The app itself is good but the updated flight info from the linked FlightStats.com is terrible. I'm expecting a flight (AC18) from Hong Kong arriving today (June 29) at Vancouver at 4:10pm today. While Air Canada's flight status info at AirCanada.com says 4:05pm, this linked FlightStats.com says 11:53am, over 4 hours sooner! I've tried a few times and the result's the same. This is impossible by common sense!!!

Interface could be improved but great otherwise Tried WorldMate but it refused to accept some of my bookings so I moved on to this. The automatic scanning of email to find the booking confirmations worked perfectly and it has had no trouble with any of the variety of websites I've used to book things. Interface could be improved - there's a lot of wasted vertical space and visually it could be a bit nicer. Overall, impressed so far.
