When the App Store launched in the Summer of 2008, it turned (some) developers into millionaires practically overnight. Steve Demeter, the creator of Trism, reportedly earned a cool quarter million in just two months from his app sales. And the number of success stories has multiplied over the last few years, as both the iOS platform and App Store have grown exponentially. Needless to say, business is good. So good, in fact, that more and more people are looking to get into app development… Where do you go to learn the skills necessary to build iOS applications? Well, you could always enroll in programming classes at your local college. Or try taking some fly-by-night computer courses online. But why pay for education when you can get it for free? iTunes U, the educational section of iTunes Videos, is a great resource for folks looking to get into programming. In fact, Stanford Read More
And the iOS4 app updates just keep on coming. We’re finding more and more by the day. Whether it’s adding support for the iPhone 4′s awesome retina display or taking advantage of new APIs within iOS4, we’re still watching for them. Here’s the ones we found this time around, and as always, if you see any we missed, be sure to let us know in the comments! Readdle is an incredibly easy to use app that allows you to not only view all kinds of files right on your iPhone, but also allows you to manage and save attachments. It’s one of the better apps we’ve found to handle documents, not to mention reasonably priced. Not only did Readdle’s newest update add multitasking support, it also adds support for USB file transfer through iTunes. Better yet, you can now save attachments via the Mail app. [iTunes Link] WeeMee is an incredibly Read More
As much as I'd love to be reporting that both Trism [$2.99 / Free] and Giana Sisters [$4.99] are now available for the iPad, both developers were hit by unexpected App Store hiccups recently. Bad Monkee, creators of the classic platformer port Giana Sisters announced via Twitter this afternoon that the wrong version of Giana Sisters HD was uploaded, approved, and briefly available for sale before it was pulled down. If you were excited for the iPad game after our announcement last week, you should only need to wait a few more days before you're collecting crystals and smooshing bad guys on the iPad. Demiforce's Trism was hit with a much nastier bug in Trism 1.5 which landed on the App Store recently. If you were excited to see the little universal plus in the bottom corner of the Trism icon, I'd hold off on buying the game until a fix Read More
I have played a lot of match 3 games since I got my iPhone and there all pretty much the same. A few like Trism [2.99] and the recently updated Puzzle Quest [4.99] change the formula but there still just another match 3. Well PlayBrain's soon to be release game called, ‘Babo Crash’ doesn’t change the formula. But it does add a whole lot of insane power ups and gem busting heroes to it. ‘Babo Crash’ uses the cast from PlayBrain’s Madballs: Babo Invasion game for the PC and Xbox Arcade. The object of the game is to collect enough gems in a set time limit to pass to the next level. This part of the game plays just like Bejeweled Blitz, but with a twist. When you match more than three gems you create a hero gem. Each color of gem creates a different hero, when you use them in Read More
Trism 2 Teaser Trailer Released
Calendar16 Fri, 29 Jan 2010 06:36:09 UTC +00:00
Originally announced in mid-2008, it sounds like Trism 2, the sequel to the early iPhone smash hit Trism [App Store], is one step closer to seeing the light of day. Demiforce released the following teaser trailer, mentioning that Trism 2 is not only coming for the iPod touch and iPhone, but also the iPad: We got in touch with developer Steve Demeter to get some more details on what to expect in Trism 2. While he's not releasing any screenshots just yet, he did mention that Trism 2 is being overhauled from the ground up, and apparently looks quite a bit nicer than the first. The sequel will also have multiplayer, but is implemented in "a really fun way that you might not intially suspect". Demeter hopes to have an iPad optimized combo app that also will run on the iPhone or iPod touch, but isn't ready to make any promises Read More
TiPb Top 5 iPhone Puzzle/Gem Switch Games!
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Jan 2010 17:30:10 UTC +00:00
By Georgia, Thursday, Jan 14, 2010 | Today’s TiPb Top 5 will be directed towards our iPhone and iPod touch wielding readers who love puzzle games where the goal is to take similarly colored shapes or objects and get them into a group, causing them to be removed from play. Just like our other TiPb top 5 must-have posts, all of these applications are available in the App Store. I’ve always been quite fond (understatement!) of these types of games, and while the variety is endless, the top 5 I currently enjoy can be found after the break! I used to play Bejeweled on my PalmOS PDA and Bejeweled 2 was one of my first games I got on the iPhone. Simple and fun, it’s a classic and the template for all gem switch games which have followed it. A set of jewels is placed in a grid and you can Read More
When it started out, the iPhone did not have very many apps. It started with things like Chopper, Trism and a few others that were lucky enough to get accepted into the iPhone program early on. As time went on though, the number of apps grew and with this, we got more flashlights and fart apps. Thankfully though, the iPhone gaming scene recovered with some GREAT “hardcore” gaming titles. Let’s discuss a few of them! Nearly everyone has played “Nazi Zombies” in Call of Duty: World at War for the Xbox 360 or the PS3, but finally, this beloved minigame was finally made available to the iPhone with decent controls and amazing graphics considering it was a mobile device. With the release of this game, many started to wonder if more of the Call of Duty franchise would be ported over to the iPhone, thus opening the was for full length Read More
Chuzzle review
Calendar16 Fri, 11 Dec 2009 13:05:44 UTC +00:00
Published: December 11, 2009 Comment         PopCap is the premium developer and publisher of addictive casual games. Their lineup consists of Bookworm, Peggle and Bejeweled 2 that are all gems in the App Store. While waiting for PopCap to release Plants vs. Zombies we get a port of match 3 puzzler Chuzzle. Chuzzle is basically a combination of Bejeweled 2 and iPhone classic Trism. You match 3 by dragging rows and columns of cuddly fuzzy Chuzzles. At times some of them get locked, and that column or row isn’t able to move. There are 4 different game modes in Chuzzle: classic mode, Speed mode, endless Zen and puzzle Mind-bender. Classic mode is untimed letting you take your time making matches, and trying to chain combos together. When you are unable to make any further matches you have to use one of your lives, or scrambles. This scrambles the chuzzles, and Read More
Apple likes to point to Steve Demeter, developer of the hit puzzle app Trism [App Store, $2.99] , as the poster child for striking it rich in the App Store, but his wealth wasn’t actually accumulated from his iPhone app. Demeter says that while he is now independently wealthy, most of the money came from, of all things, buying stock in Palm, Apple’s rival. “I bought Palm’s stock for $1.76 and sold it for $12,” he says. “It’s kind of ironic.” The fact, as Newsweek points out, is that the App Store isn’t making millionaires out of developers. Many even lose money when they don’t recoup what they invest in resources to make their apps. David Barnard has learned just how difficult writing apps for the App Store can be. In less than thee months, his new development company had created Trip Cubby [App Store, $6.99], which brought in $45,000 in Read More
Found Footage: iPhone Developer Profiles
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Apr 2009 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
In anticipation of the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference coming up June 8 - 12 in San Francisco, Apple has posted four videos highlighting developers who are creating apps with the iPhone SDK. Each video shows how the developer is creating a unique app with the iPhone SDK, using the tools and frameworks, and then selling the app through the App Store. The videos highlight: In this cynical world, it's great to see four people who are so positive about the iPhone platform and the SDK. Read More
7 iPhone Apps that have stuck on my home screen
Calendar16 Wed, 24 Dec 2008 17:25:00 UTC +00:00
To say that a lot of software has passed through my iPhone's home screen is an understatement. Between apps that I bought and apps I've been asked to try out, my iPhone has been subject to more software than I ever expected. With the year drawing to a close, I decided to take a look at my iPhone home screen and mention some titles that have displayed sticking power. Here is my list of the top 8 apps that stayed on my iPhone and show no sign of going away any time soon. They are in no particular order. Excellent use of iPhone's strengths
FiendFodder 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a very well made, highly polished, addictive game that playes right into all the iPhone's strengths. The use of device tilt to affect the cascade direction is very intuitive, and creates just the right level of emergent behavior to push this game from a me-too puzzler into something quite unique and fun. Multiple game modes, an achievement system, and a great sense of graphical style make this a hands down winner. Yeah, I might hand someone Monkeyball if I wanted to show off how many polygons the iPhone can push, but I'll hand them Trism when they're ready to have some FUN.
The Single GREATEST puzzle game since Tetris!
Xander5678 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I really don't know why Monkey Ball is the most downloaded app. This one blows that game out of the water!!
GRRRRRR...
plaintiger 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
well I just spent about half an hour writing a detailed review of this game, then accidentally brushed the screen with my finger and now it's gone. I guess that's what I get for writing on my iPhone instead of my computer. anyway, long story short, I don't like this game (yes, I actually said that). the triangular pieces make it almost impossible for me to identify partial combos needing completion and to grasp whether a nearby triangle will complete the combo or just wind up point-to-point with it (which *won't* complete the combo). I have a much harder time working with the three axes in this game than with the two in Bejeweled, for example, and even being sure whether a distant piece is in the row it needs to be in to wind up where I want it to wind up after I slide it. the triangles are way too restrictive: there are too few ways they can go together to be considered "together" - unlike in Bejeweled where you don't have to think about the orientation of the pieces - together is together, regardless of their shape. the look of the game is very nice, the tutorials are clear, concise and complete, and I like the pleasant sounds; I just don't like the gameplay at all. which, unfortunately, is kind of a big deal as far as playing the game goes. reviews can be misleading for people who don't think like everybody else. from now on I know not to download any more for-money games until the App Store and the developers figure out how to provide trial versions. update: having tried a few more times to overcome my inability to see combinations in this game, and having failed, I finally trashed it, making the $4.99 I spent on it a true and complete waste. we need either trial periods for App Store apps, or a way to either get a refund or send an unwanted app to another iPhone user so apps we don't like or use don't wind up being nothing but sinkholes for our money.
Great game, but...
U-R-4-giv-N 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can't beat level 18 (Blackhearted) in syllogism mode. Am I supposed to make a heart or something?
COLORBLIND WARNING: DONT BUY!!
cathjock 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just a warning to anyone who is colorblind: do not buy this app. it is very difficult to play if you're blue / purple colorblind (not too bad for red /green colorblind people as the red and green are highly differentiated). There is a a "colorblind mode," which basically puts an impossible to read letter on each triangle to indicate the color. not only is the letter hard to read, but looking at a sea of different color triangles with letters in every one is very annoying after about 5 minutes. Note to the developers: for colorblind mode, make the blue darker and replace the purple with light blue, and take out green and put orange in its place.
Highly Addicting
Bones Justice 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you have ADD, stay away from this game. This developer has managed to create a game that is far more than the sum of its parts, and you will find yourself easily ensnared for hours at a time. Very well designed, and far more captivating than "similar" games, which just don't seem to measure up anymore. Kudos to the developer, and I hope to see more quality games from him/her/them.
Trism is the new best puzzle game
Slasht 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Awesome because it uses the accelerometer and touchscreen, and fun because of the achievements and clever concept. Easily worth the cost.
A new dimension to a classic game.
mrparet 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game truly defeats Bejeweled. This is not just another color-matching game. A whole new dimension is added with the accelerometer support. In Trism, you have the opportunity to manipulate the board by tilting your phone to dictate where the new trisms fall. This allows for a more interactive and satisfying game play. I'm getting more addicted to Trism every time I play it. If you want to challenge yourself even more, there's a timed mode and a puzzle mode. Which ever one you choose you will be playing for hours at a time. What's even better is that Trism is designed so you can leave your game and jump right back in the next time you get a chance.
Flawless
ackb 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the perfect game app for the iPhone. It's beautiful, works smoothly, has a great little tutorial (if you like that sort of thing), and is totally addictive. Well worth the money--and then some! You'll be glad you bought it. You'll find yourself playing it while waiting in line, riding in elevators, in between baseball innings, during those advertisements at the movie theater, and other things you do that take more idle-hands time than you'd like. Buy it, you'll like it!
THE BEST app by far , and I have quite a few!!!
Coloursound 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am SO happy with my purchase of Trism. I have spent close to $100 on the apple app store, and I have gotten some VERY cool apps for my ipod touch. I am a 32 year old, and I have been playing games my whole life. I have always had a love for puzzle games, BUT only certain ones could win me over, where I would keep playing them for years...My personal favorites are Lumines, Klax, Tetris, Boxxle, and Gunpey. I can now add Trism to the list. It's one of those games that not only will I be playing for years to come (it's greatly addicting), but one I feel will influence puzzle games of the future. This game BELONGS on the Ipod Touch and Iphone - Play it for a while and you will see why. After playing this game for 3-4 days, I would have paid $30 for it. Best of luck to you Demiforce! How about a remake of Klax?!?!?
Bejewled is chopped liver compared to Trism!
TREYBERT 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is so much fun and is extremely addicting! Demiforce did an fabulous job utilizing the iPhone's controls such as the touchscreen and accelerometer. You'll look like a fool playing this while waiting in line, twisting your phone in all different directions, but you'll be a fool having fun.
this game is AWESOME
Count_Chocula 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I loved the Trism demo, and was ready to flip the five bucks for the full version, but had no idea that I only saw a fraction of the game. There is so much more, and it is more polished as well. Definately the best deal at the app store so far!
Worth every penny
TIinPA 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Exceeded all my expectations, and they were quite high to begin with! If you're only going to get one game for the iPhone, this is the one to get.
Killer App Puzzler for iPhone
Reformat Planet 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great gameplay that takes advantage of the touchscreen and accelerometer perfectly. The inclusion of multiple gameplay styles as well as achievements(!) really bring much needed value missing from more expensive App titles. Should do for the iPhone what Tetris did for the Game Boy.
A Truly Original iPhone Game
Quicksilver4648 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game utilizes the iPhone and iPod Touch’s multiple features to give the players a truly unique experience.
I'm Hooked!
sharks 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the best thing since Tetris...amazing work!!....looking forward to what you're going to do next...
First app I purchased for my iPhone.
XeoKeri 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been waiting for this game since I first saw the demo video, now I just have to wait until the iPhone 2.0 software is installed on my first generation iPhone so I can play it. I hope to see more games from Demiforce.
Good price + great gameplay = Awesome game!
Ahiru 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Seriously, this is my first 5 stars review - and this game is worth it.
Fun
FolsomQb07 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is better than bejeweled, and is very challenging. Its very addicting and will keep you playing for hours after hours. Definantely worth $5.
Very fun and addictive game
robhedin 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fun spin on bejeweled style games. The accelerometer control makes things even more fun and (so far at least) is probably the best use of this type of control I've yet seen. Gets very addictive, very quickly. My only disappointment was that I wish it had background music. In any case, it's well worth the price.
Addictive fun
Jaison13 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
i love this game and can't stop playing it. all the modes are cool. i hope demiforce has other games like this in the works. if you like puzzle games this is a must have, best one so far!
AMAZING, ADDICTING, A MUST OWN!
firteen888 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Picked this game up 2 days ago and I can't put it down. There's so much depth to this game its crazy. Tons of acheivments to unlock, GREAT integration with the game's website (shows high scores, who got which acheivments, and tons of other great info). You also get 3 different game modes which are all awesome. You can tell that the developer really put his heart into it, and since he's so active of the forums (at the game's website) I'm sure we'll see many updates for the game. This is a must own for anyone who enjoys puzzle games. The only prolem with this one is it's way too hard to stop playing!!
Superbly crafted!
abieri 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is by far the most engaging game I've played on the iPhone. Trism is initially simple enough that anyone can learn to play, yet will push your ability to strategize to new limits. I can't think of a better way to drain my iPhone's battery than by playing this for countless hours on end. With three different game types included all utilizing the iPhone's accelerometer, you can't go wrong!
Great game!!
mgonzales71 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can't wait for the updated version to fix the very few issues I've had - maybe add something new?! ;-) Well worth the $ I paid It's so cool that last night I had half the bar all joining in to help me and my friend - hell I think this game sold a few iPhones last night too!
Definitely addictive- an excellent game!
MT45 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was slightly wary of purchasing this game- I had seen a simple demo version online on my computer a while back, and while it looked like an interesting twist on the game-type, it was just a little too plain vanilla. I loved playing Bejeweled 2 on my old pda, but paying double the price to have it on my iPhone seemed wrong. So I trusted the reviews and bought Trism- and I'm SO glad I did. The game has been polished far beyond what I had seen in the simple demo, there are loads of little achievements and power-ups to go for, and it is now without question the most used 3rd party app on my phone. Perhaps I should be using some of the productivity apps more than a game, but Trism is truly addictive. Sadly, I have falling triangles in my dreams now! One slight criticism is that after playing for a little while the game starts to respond a little slowly, as if the memory is being overloaded a bit. Not sure if this is due to the Trism itself or the iPhone 2.0 firmware. But all in all a great game. It really tickles some part of your brain that, once you start to get your head around the strategy and game mechanics, you feel compelled to play just one... more... game...
Visually Stunning!
BatMax01 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I suggest everyone purchase this game. I would love for this developer to continue creating excellent content. I look forward to your next project.
Way Too Much Fun!
kd6dhm 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I made a mistake and let my wifeee play Trism... Now I'm gonna have to buy another iPod Touch!
It could have been so great...
Let down hard 3.0 stars Version: 1.4
I REALLY wanted to like trism. From the cinderella developer story, the beautiful, clean graphics, and the integration of tilt into the game, from 30,000ft, the game seems ingeniously designed. However, when you start playing seriously, it becomes clear that Trism was thoughtlessly designed. The default mode of play, "infinism", challenges the player to take his/her time to score enormous point totals by setting up huge combos. Achieving this goal is nearly impossible because the scoring value of certain combos is entirely opaque and totally counterintuitive. Why is it that some 40-trism 7-step combos are worth hundreds of thousands while others are with tens of millions? No tutorial or infoscreen explains how the game scores your achievements, yet the network maintained high scoring lists show individual combos of similar size that reach astronomical point scores. Why sit for minutes on end scheming complex combos to receive points that make no sense? Second, Trism is buggy. I have had games end by bomb when there is no bomb on the screen. I have lost games whenthere is a weird stuck piece halfway between rows of trisms. And the game badly detects tilt at times unless you really jerk your device around. The engine is problematic and needs to be tweaked. Third, the worldwide scoring system was a good idea that failed in implementation. It has obviously been hacked out of any credibility it once had-- infinism top scores range in the hundred billions, which is hard a hell to believe, but largest combos range in the three trillion range, which is outright contradictory. Stop letting us down, Demeter. Overall, trism is a good concept. Mr. Demeter hit on a deep and interesting gameplay mechanic. However, citing my complaints above, he has failed to fully develop the potential of this game. It is quite possible that Demeter does not see the potential Trism has-- with a scoring system that doesn't force you to spend what feels like hours planning your next move and with the engine bugs adequately fixed, and with a worldwide scoring system people can actually compete on, Trism could be the next Tetris. Sadly it was the only the last "Zuma", instead. Here's hoping that fame hasn't gone to Demeter's head so much that he can't come back and turn pretty good into excellent.
