Invalid Argument Ep. 1 - The App Store: (Banana) Republic?
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Mar 2012 00:24:00 UTC +00:00
The topic on our first (successful) episode of Invalid Argument was Apple's App Store. The prompt was my RWW op-ed, "The App Store Is A Republic", in which I argued that iOS users still count as nerds; they just elect the best and brightest amongst them to build the apps they want instead of doing it all themselves. The republic is a tricky metaphor, though, because Apple is a fickle president, and the App Store of today is threatened by a growing din of fraudulent apps. Does Apple listen to its users' demands, or does it merely pay lip service? I brought in an illustrious panel of app-makers to discuss. Note: This show is only 30 minutes long. We got tired of waiting for YouTube to process the edits, so we left the edges un-trimmed for now. Links we talked about: The guests today were: Caleb Elston is the co-founder and Read More
Tweet Speaker App Review – Audible Twitter Timeline
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Feb 2012 17:56:05 UTC +00:00
Save for a few tweaks available by means of jailbreaking your device and downloading via Cydia, Siri doesn’t yet have the capability, or permission as she states, to read your Twitter timeline out to you. As a worthy alternative, Tweet Speaker ($0.99) has been on the App Store for some time now, and it does just that – it reads your tweets our one by one; quite a tedious job without the help of App Cubby’s useful utility. As soon as you authenticate your Twitter account with Tweet Speaker, you can start using its unique functions. While it may be a lengthy process to listen to every one of your tweets in your timeline, especially if you’re following hundreds of people and tweets simply flood in, you’ve got the option to listen to your mentions or alternatively, like we’ve stated, the app will load all of your timeline tweets. TweetSpeaker Speaks Tweets. Say That Three Times Fast.
Calendar16 Fri, 07 Oct 2011 21:27:52 UTC +00:00
By Rob LeFebvre on October 7th, 2011 This app will read out tweets to us, and even sync up with other Twitter clients for a very accessible experience. Check this out – TweetSpeaker, a new app from App Cubby, allows users to listen to their tweet stream. Picture listening to twitter on a walk, in the car, during a commute on the bus, wherever reading them isn’t an option. Individuals with disabilities that cannot read text for whatever reason (visual or motoric disability, for example) can finally use a well-designed Twitter client made specifically for listening instead of reading the social media service. Folks without a disability can also revel in the well designed, pretty interface that allows us all to access our Twitter stream in just about every environment we have network access in. TweetSpeaker also features Tweet Marker support, a web service for setting and getting the “last read” Read More

Have your Twitter timeline read aloud.
James Wilson 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app reads your twitter timeline for times when you can listen but not look. It reads in an easily understandable voice. Each users name is read, followed by their tweet along with the title of any links they posted. Works just as I hoped.
Fun and very useful

I just got it and drove to work and listened to all my tweets AQWSOME
Great to just sit back and listen
Greg Pierce 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm making dedicated Twitter lists for the types of tweet's I'm most likely to want to listen to…sweet UI, and smart speech handles a lot of the nuances of Twitter well.
Good Start
Andrew Smith 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice idea, but needs a bit more work to make it a pleasant app to use.Firstly it's much slower than it should be on an iPhone 4. The UI is not responsive enough, especially when scrolling - to the point where it's ultimately unusable at times. Also the voice isn't a particularly good one. While there's clearly been a lot of focus on the UI design, it feels the 'sound design' has been overlooked and is arguably the most important feature of the app. Listening to one or two tweets is fine, but soon becomes tiring to listen too. The app needs to support playing music at the same time. Playing a song while tweets are being read out may help reduce the staleness of the voice.Ability to set a delay between each tweet reading and read the time the tweet occurred may also be useful.
Beautiful and Functional
Shane Crawford 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not only does Tweet Speaker have a beautiful interface it also works amazingly well. I like to listen as the tweets roll in while work around the house. Its also great for keeping up on my timeline as I go for a walk or bike ride. The voice reading the tweets is also very clear and natural. I love that it'll read the title to a linked web page or the person a tweet is in reply to. It's details like this that make Tweet Speaker a great app.
Amazingly Beautiful & Useful App
Justin Youens 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been using this for a while as a beta tester and it's found a coveted spot on my home screen.I use it while driving (I wedge my phone in my visor, speaker out) and while walking/jogging. It's an amazingly efficient way to catch up on tweets. Highly recommend... a steal at this price IMO.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Great concept, well implemented

Listening to Twitter!
Wow_That_Was_Close 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great product, everything it claims. Is it perfect? No, but better than anything else available, and it is only ver. 1.0, updates will be coming. Well worth the spend, and expect it to only get better as they react to feedback.
Almost There
Alan Stanley 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app, almost flawless execution. I will use this one for my commute to work. Heck, maybe with Siri, I can say, "Alfred, read me the latest tweets." At which point, iOS5 opens the Tweet Speaker app and I start hearing my very own customized tweet feed.A few suggestions to enhance the user experience:1) add a user option to prevent the voice from speaking the phrase "hash tag" - just sounds unnatural to hear someone say that phrase in a conversation. If I'm reading along while it's speaking, I can clearly see that the word being spoken is a hash tag. If I'm driving, i can't click the hash tag anyway, so there's no point in speaking it. By all means, though, speak the hash tagged word itself.2) add a user option to prevent the voice from identifying/speaking external links. If in driving, I'm not going to be able to click on a link anyway, so it's somewhat worthless in those situations for the voice to read the link. I'd rather have the option to ignore links altogether. 3) the voice should pronounce the emergency services number (911) as "nine-one-one" ... Not "nine hundred and eleven" ..." 911" shows up in a ton of news feed tweets... It should be properly pronounced.4) give an option to iterate through the tweets in reverse (from newest to oldest). Sometimes, I truly want to start at the newest tweet and work backwards.5) when the app reaches (and reads) the last tweet, have the app "start over" at a user-selected preset interval (say, 1, 2, 4 or 8 hrs). That way, when driving, the app acts just like a "repeat whole albumn" function you would find in music players. Of course, on the last tweet, the app should look for the next fresh batch of Tweets first, and if more are found, continue reading the new batch. However, if there a no more fresh tweets, then continue repeating the older tweets from the beginning (based on the interval the user set).
