The Retina display on the new iPad, available Friday, is absolutely stunning. However, the increase in resolution actually makes some older apps appear all pixelated and gross. You don’t want to show off your brand new iPad and leave your friends with the impression that the screen on your new tablet is any less clear than a shimmering pool of unicorn tears. Here are several iPad apps that have been updated with Retina-ready graphics so everyone within eyesight can witness the pixel-pushing power of your new Apple tablet. Besides the titles that were featured in the iPad introduction event, Apple has setup a new section on the iTunes App Store to highlight Retina-ready titles. I’ve handpicked a few titles from this list and from other updates I’m aware of for you to try out. It's iPad day and many of you are looking for the best Retina-capable apps to install on your new Apple tablet. Apple's got you covered with a section of the iTunes app store dedicated to apps updated to support the iPad's new retina display. Apple's list will get you started, but it isn't exhaustive and only includes major apps like Tweetbot and Evernote. There are many other retina-ready apps that are not being showcased by Apple. We won't be able to list every single retina app in the App Store, but we will cover some of our favorites below. If there are any that we have missed, please let us know in the comments! And here is the list from Apple: Read More

Tweetbot synct die Leseposition über Tweet Marker
Calendar16 Fri, 26 Aug 2011 19:18:34 UTC +00:00
Read More
Twitter revamps mobile web app
Calendar16 Thu, 12 May 2011 09:00:00 UTC +00:00
With all of the various options available, like Echofon, Twitterific, the official Twitter app and everything else, you already have a choice of ways to browse and post to Twitter on your iPhone. But just in case you happen to use Mobile Safari to do it, Twitter has updated its mobile web app, tuning it up a bit to match both the standard official Twitter interface and the "new Twitter experience" seen on the standard website. As you can see at right, the bar that's normally across the bottom now sits on top, and you can browse through replies, mentions, and check out trending lists. You can even view some media, like pictures and videos, right there in the feed. Pretty groovy. Again, I can't think of a reason why you'd use this over a dedicated app on the iPhone, but it's up to you. The new version of Twitter's mobile Read More

Developer The Iconfactory, who most may know as co-developer of the game Ramp Champ [$1.99] or from the popular Twitter client Twitterrific [Free], have announced their latest iOS project titled Astronut. Astronut looks to have similar gameplay to Jump O'Clock [99¢], where you are launching a character upwards to various spinning discs, but in Astronut some of these discs appear to have gravity which adds quite an interesting element to this style of gameplay. The following teaser for Astronut doesn't show a whole lot of gameplay, but it does give you a quick glimpse of what the game should be like: So far the only details we have on Astronut is that there will be 24 levels across 6 different "sectors" and Game Center integration for leaderboards and achievements. Also, the game will be free to download and try, though I'm not sure if that means a full game will be Read More
App Store for Mac highlights two major App Store flaws
Calendar16 Thu, 21 Oct 2010 04:00:00 UTC +00:00
The idea of a Mac App Store is great... from a certain point of view. As it currently exists, the App Store has several problems and limitations which could be fairly easily removed. 1. Demos/Trial Periods/Returns: I'm not going to state unequivocally that Apple will have demos in the Mac App Store, but I will state unequivocally that Apple should have demos in the Mac App Store. As noted earlier, the Mac App Store guidelines state "Apps that are 'beta', 'demo', 'trial', or 'test' versions will be rejected." That's the same as the iOS App Store guidelines. That should change. Demos aren't just for small developers. Apple has offered demos for their apps, including iWork and Aperture. Adobe and Microsoft have as well. They give users a chance to try out an application without having to commit to it. This concept is almost as old as computers themselves. Apple could address Read More
Twitter is replacing my RSS reader
Calendar16 Sun, 19 Sep 2010 21:11:22 UTC +00:00
I’ve been a pretty loyal Google Reader user for a while now. I started using it at around the same time I began writing online, and it has been my primary tool for the collecting and catching up on the news for the past few years. So how come I’ve barely touched GReader over the past few weeks? Twitter is why (Twitterriffic for iPhone, if I have to name a main client). It takes quite a while to get accustomed to Twitter as a news source because it can be overwhelming. It took time to find the right people to follow, to understand the online etiquette (although I still don’t care for #FF), and I’m still balancing how many people I should follow at any one time. In a way, RSS was easier to get into, since I knew almost exactly what I was dealing with: anything that goes up on Read More
Homescreens – August 2010

Read More
Twitterrific for iPhone and iPad Updated to Version 3.0.1
Calendar16 Mon, 26 Jul 2010 13:59:07 UTC +00:00
My absolute favorite iPhone Twitter client, Twitterrific, was updated recently. The update brings us up to version 3.0.1, and packs the standard batch of bug fixes, along with timeline shortcuts and enhancements for iOS 4. New Features Improvements Bug Fixes So far I’ve found all of the new features very handy. While I haven’t (and probably won’t) take advantage of ALL of these new features and improvements, it’s always nice to see a somewhat sizable update to an app like this. It shows me the developers are putting quality time and effort into developing the best app they possibly can. For more information or to download on your iPhone or iPad, hit up the iTunes link below. Twitterrific for iPhone and iPad (Free) [iTunes link] Note: As I’ve mentioned, this update is available for the iPad as well. I have the iPad app installed, and let me tell you… this is Read More
[click on the tiny-ish thumbnail to see the gargantuan changelist] If you had misgivings about the Twitterriffic 3.0 redesign (free, review here) that streamlined and simplifyied the whole interface, then 3.0.1 may be the feature jolt you were waiting for. The app is now a *lot* easier to use, thanks to the new shortcuts that pop up when you tap and hold, double tap, or triple tap on a tweet in the timeline. Links can also be accessed and sent to Instapaper right from the main timeline, which drastically reduces the number of taps required to sort through your overnight tweets in the morning. In fact, this update is so good that I decided to just upgrade my copy of Twitterrific to Premium, despite the fact that  I don’t mind the in-app ads, and won’t be adding an extra Twitter account. I *tweeting* love Twitterrific 3. Read More

Quick Look: Twitterrific for Twitter (for iPhone)
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Jul 2010 18:34:04 UTC +00:00
I ‘ve got a new main Twitter client on my iPhone, but before you make some snarky remark about how often I say that, just hear me out. The reason I like the totally re-designed (and totally free) Twitterrific 3 is because its approach is so similar to Icebird ‘s, my other ‘main ‘ Twitter client. Presentation Twitterrific doesn ‘t have any tabs to speak of, and there are only a handful of features accessible on any given screen. There’s a main menu with options to view standard Twitter fare (All Tweets, Replies, Messages), conduct a search, and view lists and current trends. The timeline view shows only four tweets at once, and tapping on a tweet will show the text, an in-line picture (if applicable), and a handful of sharing options split between three buttons at the bottom. As I said in my into paragraph, the design reminds me a Read More
We’ve been covering some of the new and notable iOS 4 updates as we find them going live in the App Store, but Apple’s new Awesome iOS 4 Apps section in the iTunes App Store has just made that task a little easier. Check them out to see Apple’s favorites, and hit the jump to see some more of ours… I think Bejeweled 2 was one of the first games I downloaded (ok that’s probably an exaggeration), but it’s one of the ones that sticks in my head as an all time favorite. It’s extremely addicting and links up with Bejeweled Blitz so if you have Facebook, you can show off your scores on Facebook as well. Bejeweled 2 has added fast app switching support as of now. An incredibly useful app just got even more useful. Instapaper has added multitasking support as of now and say they’ll have more updates Read More
TUAW's Daily App: Twitterrific (and others!)

Ok, so we're kind of cheating with this one; you probably already know about Twitterrific, if you don't actually have it installed on your iPhone. But we're using our daily app spotlight today to point out that the folks at Iconfactory have released version 3.0 of the popular Twitter client. Along with making the app universal (which means it now works on both iPhone and iPad), they've updated the interface and code for iOS 4. That means that it's not only , but it's faster and works with in-app switching as well. Twitterrific is a free app, with a US$4.99 in-app purchase to remove the ads and manage more Twitter accounts. That's not enough? Alright, we'll throw in a few more upgrades. Smule's popular I Am T-Pain app has also upgraded for iOS 4, making it not only ready for the Retina Display but also adding the ability to share auto-tuned Read More

10 Beautiful and Usable iPhone and iPad Interfaces

Mobile devices like the iPhone and the iPad have been a real springboard for designers and developers. Because we can now literally have our computers in our pockets, our favorite applications and websites and services can now come with us. However, when designing for mobile devices, it’s important to focus on the size and resolution of the device’s screen, as well as how the user interacts with the device. You can make a really beautiful looking application that ultimately fails because it is difficult for the user to use and isn’t optimized for a touch screen. Sometimes the best way to get started thinking about application design is to look at what others have already produced. For your inspiration, here are 10 iPhone and iPad apps that have both beautiful and Read More
The Iconfactory’s Twitterrific for iPad was one of the best iPad-optimized Twitter apps available at launch for a handful of reasons. It was elegant like the original, free to try, stable (yeah, this one’s directed at you TweetDeck), and contained just enough features to get you by. But “just enough features” only gets you so far, especially this far out after launch. Thankfully The Iconfactory heard our cries and have finally added the ability to upload pictures and videos in v1.1, among a handful of other worthy features and fixes. Twitterrific for iPad v1.1 now allows you to upload pictures and videos via a variety of services including yFrog, TwitPic, TwitVid, Posterous, img.ly, and more. Twitter power users can even choose to configure their own custom image uploading services. Twitterrific for iPad is also able to handle image URLs from img.ly and Tweetphoto better by allowing them to appear as popovers. Read More

Twitterrific has been my Twitter client of choice for a LONG time now on the iPhone. It’s easy to use, looks great, and heck, it’s just plain good stuff. After having purchased my first iPad a few weeks back, one of the first apps I loaded on to my new ‘magical’ device was Twitterrific. I had heard good things, and wanted to give it a spin. I wasn’t disappointed. The larger screen of the iPad makes for a much more enjoyable experience. I found myself reading more of the stories, checking out more photos, and generally interacting more with those on my feed. The enhanced space really does make it more enjoyable to read the stories people post (links, pictures, videos pop open in a nice, big built-in browser), and so far, I have to give it two thumbs up. With that in mind, I just wanted to notify you all Read More

by Twitterific’s iPad app will now include the ability to upload images and videos, the company has told us. Multimedia support is just one feature that makes Twitterrific stand out among iPad Twitter apps — and one feature that will likely keep Twitterrific in many users’ hearts in the event that Twitter releases an official iPad app, as well. The app already includes features such as filters, retweets, link shortening, e-mail and tweet translation. It also allows users to manage multiple accounts with an upgrade. New capabilities with version 1.1 include support for picture and video uploading, support for custom upload services, and the inclusion of image URL shorteners from img.ly and Tweetphoto. Additionally, the app now uses OAuth and includes a default “reply all” feature. What do you think of these new functions? In less than 24-hours the iPad will finally be released. Now, the hardware, however sexy it might be, is not why so many people are itching to buy the device: It’s all about the apps! In the ramp-up to the iPad release, more and more applications have been announced or previewed and now that the apps are live in iTunes, we already know what apps will be available on day one. Over the last few weeks, we’ve thought a lot about what apps we most want to try on the iPad upon its release and these ten represent some of our favorites. The selection of applications is varied — from games to web services to whole new product types. However successful the iPad ends up being will hinge in part on the apps available for the device. If these ten are any indication — iPad users have a lot to look Read More
If you're anxiously awaiting the arrival of a new iPad, you might want to head over to the app store, where a couple thousand iPad apps are already available for purchase. You can shop now, and sync with the iPad when it arrives. However, the question is what to buy? The current top sellers are Apple's iWork apps: Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, so you'll get no help from that list. Instead, check out this crop of must-have apps that are already in the store and ready to be installed on day one. My picks ended up being equal parts free and paid apps, proving that you don't need to spend a fortune to equip the shiny new device you've already spent a fortune on. I wrote about the possibility of a Netflix streaming video app earlier this week, and now it's actually available in the store. It's definitely a must-have for Read More

Little disappointed.
Tyson Edwards 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Overall, it does what I would expect out of a twitter app, and is just as capable as the iPhone version. The reason for 3 stars is the fact that the Premium Upgrade is an in-app purchase, and the existing Premium app isn't offered as a Universal app. For a limited utility application such as a Twitter feed, it seems like having licensed users re-buy is kinda scummy when no new functionality was added. Also, just a bit of feedback... What I would like is the ability to sync "Saved Searches" from the iPhone to the iPad.

I am a die hard fan of iPhone Twitterific. In fact, I'd say that it is the most important third party application I have on my device, and in fact possibly the only one I use. Twitterific has super-fast scrolling and seemed to really get the Twitter workflow. The iPad version of this app doesn't live up to that legacy. Really, the iPad version seems like a complete rewrite. Almost all of the features for how to display the content are gone. Maybe I'm just being dense, but I've searched around the UI and the Settings app, and can't find any switches or levers. So, by default (and therefore by requirement) it doesn't show the actual usernames of the people with their posts, which is the only way the website shows names, making switching between them impossible (as I am simply not going to relearn the names of the hundreds of people I interact with on Twitter). Meanwhile, much of the flexibility in how tweets are sent was removed. Ever since Twitter released the "don't show @replies unless you follow both users" upgrade, it has been critical to be able to mark certain replies as "not really a reply" (as you are replying to a single user, but on a general issue for everyone to see), which was easily accomplished with the interface of the iPhone application. The performance is also horrible. Despite this faster device (and a design that failed to use the extra screen real-estate for anything but larger fonts), scrolling lists of tweets in the iPad version of Twitterific lags and skips. I don't know if they lost the developers that worked on the original version, but this should not have been reimplemented. Finally, the original version of Twitterrific had support for complex searches and filters, letting you select based on location and screen name, as well as supporting both "all" and "any" keyword searches. None of these features are present in the iPad version the application. I /highly/ recommend that users try installing the iPhone version of this application, to experience how it operated. Even with pixel doubling, it is much more functional. This, unfortunately, means that the new iPad keyboard isn't usable, but frankly the old keyboard on the new screen is not bad enough to warrant all of the other functionality loss. (Typed on my not-yet-jailbroken iPad.)
Elegant

BeAutiful, elegant, a pleasure to use. And with a free ad supported version, there's no reason not to give it a try.
Hold on Frankenberry, I'ma let you finish

Twitteriffic for iPhone was one of the greatest launch day Twitter applications of all time. All jokes aside this is the best best Twitter client on the iPad (sorry Tweetdeck). I upgraded to the full version, not because I wanted multiple accounts but because I want this app to thrive and improve. It has surely started out in a great place.
Harumph

Now I need to lug around an iPad to get the best possible Twitter experience! Time for industrial cargo pants.
Best IPad Twitter app so far!

Big Tweetie user, bummed that Tweetie didn't have their app ready for iPad. I tried many other apps for Twitter. This one is the best. Nothing else even comes close!
Beautiful

Wow. This app is truly beautiful. It just makes sense. The interface is intuitively designed with rich color tones that make using it a dream.
Great Twitter client

This is a clean, simple Twitter client with the excellent graphic/UI design seen in all IconFactory work. My only wish is that it would synch read-status with Twitterific on the Mac, since I use both clients.
Excellent

Nice interface on the iPad. Text is a little dark but in my opinion it is way easier to navigate then the iPhone app.
Very pleased with this app...

I didn't expect that using Twitterific on the iPad would be that much different to iPhone - given that each tweet is 140 characters how much screen real estate do you need? Evidently I was pleasantly surprised. Found Twitterific on iPad to be the best way I know of to read tweets. Just feels right. Perfectly balanced UI in my opinion.
Beautiful Design

The Iconfactory delivered as usual with this Twitter client. Really easy to understand and it all just "makes sense". Will be using this for a long time to come. I've noticed a bug or two but seeing as how not one member of the development actually had an actual iPad prior to today it's not a big deal. I am sure this will be a solid app going forward. Great job!

The app is great for reading Twitter. It has just the right amount of features. Knowing Iconfactory it will get better and better with updates.
The best Twitter app thus far

Let me start by saying that I did try Tweetdeck and it just didn't cut it. Interaction, features and UI for Twitterrific is great even for a 1.0 app and it's actually a better experience than any app I have used even on the desktop. I now prefer consuming twitter on my iPad than on my MacBook Pro. Don't think! Just try it for yourself!
Fantastic!

Incredible Twitter app for the iPad. And it's only at version 1.0! Hard to believe that it will get better, but I have no doubt they'll find a way! I recommend this app 100%!
Makes good use of the extra space
Stealthv 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I really like how this app makes use of the available space. Seeing images as pop-ups is nice. The one thing I find lacking is the refresh. It would be really nice to have the pull to reload feature of Tweetie. That would be much more natural especially on the large screen.
Works very well.

Somewhat ok..

For the iPad i had a higher expectation for twitteriffic, and they did not deliver what i expected. This version even has less features than the one on the iPhone! Come on, try to make it more unique with features and design. It's just a simple teeter application.
Perfect for iPad
FightingTheSuburbs 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The main reason I got the iPad was because of it's big screen. Well what's the int of apps not taking advantage of that? I tried Tweetdeck too but it doesn't hold up to Twitterific. I upgraded too for the dual accounts. The in app web browser and picture viewer are also well done. Graphically it's just eye-pleasing to the extreme and has useful features.
Best Twitter app for iPad
