Typically, on Google Maps or Bing Maps, you get a bunch of virtual pushpins for each place which you can click on for more information. UpNext, a 3D mapping startup based in New York City, brings that information forward in amore fluid way in the latest release of its iPad app. As you push the 3D map around with your fingers, labels for specific searches or your Read More

Five apps for NYC tourists
Calendar16 Tue, 04 Aug 2009 22:30:00 UTC +00:00
I was in NYC for a week and feeling a bit bored, so I took a look at a passel (anyone still use that word?) of NYC tourist apps, that I picked up last week for the heck of it. NYC Subway 24-Hour KICKMap - $1.99. Rating: Horrible. This is a generic subway map that's "24 hours" because you can tap the day/night button to switch the background from white to black. Wow! Hold your finger on a station for 3 seconds to bring up the address of the subway stop and often a disconnected phone number. Tap 'Alerts' and the app tosses you to the Manhattan Transit Authority site in Safari. HopStop - Free. Rating: Wonderful. Tell it where you want to go and it'll get you there via public transportation, just like the website hopstop.com, but with GPS built-in. UpNext 3D NYC - $2.99. Rating: Meh. Useful for finding Read More
Ecco un video dimostrativo: Read More

Search New York City in 3D With UpNext for iPhone

This post is part of Mashable’s Spark of Genius series, which highlights a unique feature of startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. The series is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. Quick Pitch: UpNext 3D NYC iPhone app brings the Big Apple into the palm of your hands. Genius Idea: Google Maps on your iPhone is great for a lot of things, especially when it comes to a street level view of towns and neighborhoods. In practice, however, the app falls short of meeting our needs for truly navigating, exploring, and searching a city. What UpNext’s 3D NYC iPhone app does for Manhattan is take your mobile map experience to the next level. The app uses standard iPhone touch capabilities to let you navigate, zoom, tilt, and turn the 3D map with your fingers. But it’s what you uncover while you’re Read More

Got wifi?
Head Over Heels 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Really amazing app. Requires wifi for most of the options.
Very helpful!
A-train81 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great graphics and very helpful for getting around manhattan! Can't wait till they add Brooklyn.
Amazing app.. very smooth and actually works!
Dominic84 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've seen upnext briefly on the web before and thought it was very impressive. I've always thought it would be great on my iphone, and voila they did it! I've had reservations on how well it would run (speed, looks, responsiveness, functionality) and it does all of them in spades. I can't imagine how much it's pushing the iphone to the bleeding edge with manhattan rendering in full 3d. I've yet to try out all the functions, and I'm sure there's a few things I don't like, but so far I'm extremely impressed. I randomly tried searching for a local deli near my location and it found several instantly, in their correct buildings. Highly recommended!
fast and easy
chris h788 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
this app runs really fast over the 3G network! the category searches make it easy to find things without typing, and i really like how the 'see all' button lights up all the results around the city. would be nice if you could text results to other people
Very useful app
RobertSNYC 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The best things about this app is its speed. I can find businesses quickly and easily. Also, I really like being able to tap on buildings to see what's inside. The extras beyond the maps like Twitter, FB, Just Opened all make this a more full featured app. I was able to find a cool new bar around the corner from where I was having dinner two night ago.
So functional, fast & easy to use!
Chill in NYC 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Been cruising this app for few days now...to navigate the city's restos, bars, shops etc. This is the MUST HAVE APP as a NY local (like me) or visitors to the city, they've thought of everything !
New York Traveler
Anaheim Ducks Rule 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This software proved to be an essential tool for my girlfriend and I when we visited New York over spring break. It allowed me to locate the nearest chipotle, sight seeing locations, and was extremely helpful with the subways. I highly recommend this application to all who are visiting New York.
Very Helpful!
Easily Lost 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am not very good at directions and hate it when people give me "North and South" directions... Upnext has helped me find my destination with ease! It tracks where I am and points me in the direction that I need to go! I am always very bad at choosing where to eat and do next, but knowing what is around me and the price range and reviews has helped me narrow down my choices. Not being from New York it also helped me with the subway sytems. I highly recommend this to anyone visiting or living in New York!
Best local maps app for NYC
Tom Limongello 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love this app, indispensible for people living in Manhattan. This goes much further than google maps, and offers you a highlighted view the building where each listing is located, which is easier to use than street view when trying to find a particular bar, restaurant, store etc. It also has a way to clearly highlight subway lines, which is helpful when you're not fully zoomed. Upnext was already a great website but the app is even easier to use because of the touchscreen interface. Looking forward to an even deeper integration with Facebook connect and Twitter.
Hats off to the developers
Socaldall 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am a firm believer of giving credit when deserved. This app is extremly well thought out and presented beautifully. I am happy to see it in the top 15 at 2.99 competing with all the 99 cent garbage. So many apps just list and link with no styling or creativity. Hats off to developers like UpNext, Shazam, Tap Banana, Tap Tap Tap and many others. Once all the garbage apps filter out, it will be innovative developers like these who take the App Store to the next level.
Not too smooth...
Disappointed in NYC 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just downloaded for iPhone 3Gs - seems pretty jerky; shame. Like the idea though - any chance of an update? If it wasn't so darn jerky constantly, it'd be worth at least 4 stars.
Great app
Best map 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Used this app while I was in New York this past month. Very fast and smooth on my iPhone 3g. I love how you can click buildings to find stuff. The category search is cool too. It highlights results very well without clutter.
Half and Half
PWLG 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was in NYC yesterday and used the app for the first time. The shakey map caught me off guard at first, however, once I got going, I was impressed with the graphics and the detail. The information concerning Italian restaurants was inaccurate. I was at 47th and Broadway and the restuarants supposed to be in the area were nowhere to be found. It got the Sbarro's correct, but the others were missing. I like the concept a lot, but the devil is in the details.
With this upgrade, UpNext is now 5 stars
sd45 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
The list view addition and the increased speed now make this a great app. It is one of my favorite apps for finding cool stuff to do in NY. Great update, guys.
Great App
Anthonynj 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is my favorite app on my itouch and was well worth the $3. I live a few miles from Manhattan so whenever I go in I bring this with me to find restaurants and clubs. It also has a map of the subways and even has the time that the next train will be coming. And the coolest part is that it's all 3D.
Great App!
SamuelUS 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Amazing app and I can't wait for more cities to be modeled by upnext.
Search function
On broadway 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
I bought this app today but would like to see a search feature where I can type the name of a store. For instance I wanted to search for Manhattan Mall and Kmart but both did not come under department stores or womens clothing Jill
Must have for New Yorkers.
IencoreI 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This application gives you all of NYC in your hands. From restaurants, to bars, to clubs, to clothing stores, the UpNext team has done a fantastic job. I love that the places also include ratings and reviews. Much thanks to the UpNext Team for such an amazing application for the iPhone. Jill (On Broadway) - please correct your rating and comment below. You mentioned that the app should include a search feature so that you can type in what you are looking for, and it DOES! You just have to click on the icon of the magnifying glass to bring up he search field.
Not worth $2.99..
mroush77 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app looks kinda cool because it's in 3D.. But, does that add functionality/usefulness?? Not really, in my opinion. Maybe I need to play around with it more, right now I'm not too impressed..
No Brooklyn?!!!
Luke1342 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Good but no Brooklyn? Why? Brooklyn is the new manhattan!
Great concept, lackluster execution
JSpiceCA 3.0 stars Version: 1.6
I work in SF so the first thing I did was locate the area I visit almost daily. Buildings look nothing like real life, my employer who occupies 3 buildings encompassing pretty much an entire city block isn't identified and (yet?) the local fast food place Quiznos is - albeit in the wrong building, on the wrong side of the street and listed twice! With immediate gross misrepresentation, incomplete and incorrect information all of your other data becomes suspect! How can I be sure a certain bus line stops where you say it does or a restaurant is located where you denote?
More cities please?!?
2biodude2 2.0 stars Version: 1.6
I want the whole world, not just five cities!
Excellent application
Vernalex 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
I needed a good map of Boston and this one lets you see it in 3D. I would have been willing to pay for it, but it is free!
Very Good
Fernando Ribas 5.0 stars Version: 1.7
I went in NY for the first time, and the UpNext was very helpfull and usefull, this is not a game who needs awesome graphics... This is a tool... And works well! I really like it!
Amazing...
Psfgyo 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Top app... I live in NYC.. I think this app is the best map system i've seen..
Stunning!!!!!
Poor College Kid 5.0 stars Version: 1.7
Huge Functionality per city but I would like more. I have it for the iPod and love it, bet it looks great on the iPad!
Fun map
Force9guy 3.0 stars Version: 1.6
Boston looks great although Fenway Park is oriented the wrong way (green monster should border Landsdowne) and the state house is all flipped around... A fun app nonetheless
Good but . . .
pnickol 3.0 stars Version: 1.7
It is fun and visually exciting, but once the eye candy wears off, the app lacks polish. My biggest complaint is that every time there is an update, you must remember to re-download all the maps that you want to view. Otherwise you could be in the subway and want to look for a building, but no map of your city and no way to download it because you are already underground. Bad mistake. Lately there have been several updates in a short timespan, and I've had to download the maps 3 times after trying to use them with no internet available. Poor design. If they fix issues like this, it could grow to be a fun and useful app.
Amazing
Simonita 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Up next is a great help when you don't know where to go. Including reviews from yelp it gives you an idea of what its like and you can remember the places easily by bookmarking them.
This is my first review - and its worth my time

Slick interface!
KLSH 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
Wow! A really slick interface, aerial views with 3d views that you can smoothly orient and spin around... Has search and overlays for attractions, tourist sites and restaurants and entertainments! I hope they can add Pittsburgh to the list... Great find!
Awesome
Dominic84 5.0 stars Version: 1.7
Awesome update. Love the ios4 and retina display support. Maps look absolutely sharp and amazing on my iPhone4!! Highly recommended.
Great (m)app
Jasperpants 4.0 stars Version: 1.5
Great little map app. I would recommend you check out the tutorial on their site. To tilt the view you need to do a double finger swipe which wasn't instantly obvious. But maybe that's just me!!!
Great Integration
Bob08008 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Easy to use, excellent graphical interface provides access to a multitude of useful city information. You can get rid of many special purpose applications like that for Starbucks. Keep the cities coming!
More cities
Bori4rmny 3.0 stars Version: 1.5
Good app but def needs more cities !!!
Incredible
Barack H. Obama 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
Most incredible free app I have ever used yet!
Very Nice!
RCRJr 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
I just downloaded the recent update and you took what used to be a good app to being a great app! I love adding Washington DC to your cities. And your new features are awesome. I don't know what you plan next, but I can't wait. It gets better and better.
Great interface
GoatWarrior 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
This is a great app with a great interface. It's a great way to demonstrate what the iPad can do. The subway map and restaurant reviews are great. I only wish there were more cities available.
