Seit dem heutigen Morgen befindet sich mit der Ustream Recorder-Anwendung (kostenlos; App Store-Link) ein iPhone-Programm im App Store, das Videos am mobilen Gerät aufzeichnen kann und diese per UMTS (!) auf die Streaming-Plattform schickt. Bislang verfolgte Apple für derartige Anwendungen eine relativ eindeutige und strikte Politik. Sowohl Qik als auch Ustream selbst hatten in der Vergangenheit mehrfach versucht, ihre fertigen Anwendungen in den App Store zu laden. Während Ustream daraufhin die Funktionalität zusammenstrich und ausschließlich ein Programm zum Abspielen der Videos anbot (Ustream Viewing), wählte Qik den Weg zur Jailbreak-Gemeinde. Die ersten Eindrücke sind durchaus positiv. Lediglich einmal ist mir die Anwendung nach einer Aufzeichnung abgenippelt, was mit einem kompletten Verlust des Videos einherging.
