Back in April, we learned that developer SoMoGa was hard at work on an iOS port of classic RPG Lunar: Silver Star Story, and today we finally have the first screenshots from the game. SoMoGa was responsible for porting the Sega Saturn RPG Vay [$4.99] to the App Store in 2008, and did a pretty fantastic job doing so. While Vay was a somewhat obscure title, the Lunar series has a pretty dedicated following worldwide, and has seen several different releases and remakes over the years. Originally, Lunar: The Silver Star was released for the Sega CD back in 1993. A remake of the game, called Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and featuring enhanced audio and visuals, came to the more powerful Sega Saturn console in 1997, but only in Japan.  This remake eventually did make its way to North America by way of the PlayStation console in 1999. SoMoGa Announces 'Lunar: Silver Star Touch' for iOS

I wish there were more details available than the headline, but that's it. SoMoGa is responsible for the bringing the similarly fantastic old-school RPG Vay [$4.99] to the App Store, and we're expecting Lunar: Silver Star Touch to be of similar quality. We briefly chatted with SoMoGa at GDC, and the one tidbit that we can offer about Lunar is that it won't be a shoddy port by any means, this is a complete from the ground up touch-based port of the game, not a ROM wrapped in a mediocre emulator like Sega's offerings. Originally released in North America for the Sega CD in 1993 and the PlayStation in 1998, Lunar was chock full of animated cut scenes, voice overs, and all the other fun stuff that they were packing on CD-ROM games at the time. We had a ton of fun playing Vay, and are totally stoked for the future Read More
There are few iPhone games that I will immediately buy. Most of the ones I do, however, are the classic games I played as a teenager. The iPhone/iPod touch is more than powerful enough to handle these games and it seems that there are many people like me who are keen to experience these classics again. So, here’s a roundup of modern ports of classic games. Only official ports of classic games are detailed here — clones and the like do exist but I had to draw a line in the sand. I’ve also included links to Wikipedia for those interested in the history of the games. The Video Arcade is where mainstream gaming began, and there are plenty of original ports from this era to re-live your youth shoving coins into cabinets. I’d still like to see BubbleBobble make an appearance here to completely satisfy my urges. Release Year: 1978Original Read More

A strong start for RPG's on the iPhone
Furyslayer 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
After a stunning debut on the Sega CD with Lunar: The Silver Star, Working Designs set about finding another epic RPG to appease the new and old fans. In this they were successful and acquired the rights to a Japanese game called Vay, and published it with another of their unique translations. Now we get a chance to revisit the game 14 years later.
Decent, But Not Great
Heraklitus 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a good start for the new 2.0 OS, but this game has serious game play issues.
Totally Awesome
shademonster 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I have been waiting for an app like this to come out - I even thought about writing my own since I am a Developer as well, but the time involved in coming up with the storyline, characters, items, animations bla bla bla would take forever from scratch.
Awesome
Monk On Fire 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great for something that came out so soon after 2.0... I just wish there was a way to see item stats. Besides that it's my favorite game so far!
A delightful port of an old classic
LuccaRPG 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
As a proud owner of the Sega-CD version, I was floored this game was remade at all! So far, it's a very faithful port and a blast to play. The control scheme works well once you get used to it, and works best in battles, which zip by quickly. My only true gripe is that no item or armor stats are listed in shops and unlike the Sega CD version of the game, the game never lists a monsters name.
WOW
Sprintz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Worth every penny. Best game on iphone/touch ever. Buy it!!! :]
Really solid game
HarmlessAndroid 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It is really cool to have an rpg on the iPhone/iPod. I have noticed some spelling errors though. Also when you speak to shop keepers, I would expect a portrait or something, but it is a black screen. I hope a free update comes along and adds polish to the game. Still a much appreciated and commendable effort.

Geome 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
How am I the first one to rate this? It's absolutely awesome. For final fantay-esque entertainment, this is the way to go.
Great Initial RPG
Mista E 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
For what is essentially a launch RPG for the iPhone, I'm quite impressed with this outing. It's a port of an old school RPG from the mid 90s, and it shows somewhat with the cliched story and old style controls and gameplay, but it's still enjoyable. The control scheme is interesting and can be annoying, but is manageable. I hope to see more games like this in the future.
Great, but..
Forgetful Lena 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
This game is awesome for the iPhone and it works great with the touch screen. My only complaint is that when I updated, I lost my saved game and my backup save!
Fun, but not great
Unholy Rapture 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I like this game, but the only problems I have with it are the controls, they are kinds of a hassle. I'm not suggesting accelerometer or anything like that, just maybe in that space to the right with your characters and everything you could add a d-pad or something like that, that would make this game a lot better...the only other thing are the graphics...now that we've seen some amaIng RPG's, the old ones are a little out dated...I understand this is a port, but could you polish things up a little bit...maybe even get it looking more like the classic RPG Pokemon, or zelda...any of these would be amazing changes...And I would also like to see the shop changes with the buy then learn what it does issue resolved...I would reccommend for now, but as soon as a more polished RPG is released, like the rumored panphobia (google it), then this one will not be played unless they polish it up...
Great game! Good value for the money.
Lao_er 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game has good interface ( automatic & manual game save, smart combat system, etc. ). It is a lot of fun to play. I wish we could have more RPGs like this one.
I LOVE THIS GAME!
iPhoneGamer 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
If you enjoy the old SNES style RPG then this is for you! I was very sad when I beat it again! I think SoMoGa should create "Vay : Part II" - I love old school RPG games!
If you've been looking for an RPG, look no further than Vay
Sajak 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Vay is a pretty simple game to get into and play. The entire game is controlled by the touch screen, obviously. Movement isn't exactly precise, and it can be rather annoying at times when you want your character to move a certain place and you can't get him to go there. Maybe for the next update, it would be possible to add a D-Pad on the touch screen? Combat is the traditional turn based combat you would expect from an RPG. Nothing really innovative or new, but hey, you get your money's worth. As an avid RPG gamer, I did find the menu to be rather poor, especially because when you buy or equip items, it doesn't show what characters can equip them or how their stats will be affected. Overall it's a great first effort for an RPG for the Ipod, and one I would recommend to anyone who likes traditional RPGs.
 Why is this ONLY $5 
Xander_k 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
 With all the games that are on the app store that are more than $5 and are complete junk, it's great to see a full fledged RPG come out that could easily to for $10 - $15 for only $5. I love this game, it bring the Final Fantasy feel to the iPhone with hours upon hours of gameplay. SoMoGa, I want more of what your dishing out! 
Best App So Far!
Treefork 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you like classic Final Fantasy you will enjoy this game. I'm hooked and the interface is really easy to use though you might get a little tired poking your finger at the screen so switch 'em up a bit. Let's see more of this for the iphone!
Great classic rpg
Aurvid 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I love this game, I only wish that the menu were better than just a plain iPhone page. Maybe adding some colors might help. Also the game has a few glitches.
Excellent Start
oracle_ab 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Certainly an excellent start for RPGs on the App Store. While the game is superb in story and gameplay, a few things needed are descriptions of the weapons, clothing, items, etc., how they affect your stats, description of the monsters/baddies, possibly a map, and a start screen to begin new or load a saved game, etc.
Best app store game yet
Vkramer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Title says it all. Now gimme Final Fantasy 6.
Hours of gameplay!!!
yummin 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
The only true RPG for the iPhone at the time of this writing.
Highly enjoyable, love the campy humor
The Offstar 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
.. some polishing up of the interface would be nice, and more detail with inventory. Love the old school RPG style games - always my favorite. The ability to play for small amounts of time easily is fantastic and I hoping for more of this style. Oh how I wish I could move my little guys around using the tilt functionality; that would be awesome.
THEY DID IT RIGHT!
mitch'o 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
the creators were right on when they designed this game, it has game play and graphics that could rival playing it on the gameboy color. also i was very excited about the price, its a steal when compared to the kind of crappy games you could buy at 9.99
Great!
appleHC 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I never thought I would play a game like this anymore. But Vay is a lot of fun. Its not considerable hard, no challenge for real experts. But for casual gaming its great.
Wow, just wow.
badjujuman 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is great. The controls are suprisingly easy to use, and so far the story is awesome. I was wondering if RPG's were going to come to the iPhone or not. This has answered that question. It makes me want to start designing one of my own. Great Job!
Simply Great!!
KinjoMusashi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Looks like i'm not getting any sleep tonight...Finally, the first "real" rpg for the iphone....Great game and provides hours of fun....take it from a hard-core gamer...you'll love this one!
Good App, bad game
Sho-n 2.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
So there's a certain amount of novelty with this Final Fantasy clone being on your iPhone/Touch. It's cool that someone brought his kind of game to the device, I rather like the genre and am a big Final Fantasy fan, as well as a fan of some of the other games of the genre. And hey, the app works, it has a few crashes every once ina while, and I don't really like the touch interface (it's kind of a pain really), but as an app it works.
