Viber is the product of a small Israeli startup, Viber Media Inc. They launched the first version of their VoIP app back in December of last year to rave reviews. I liked Viber when I tested it several months ago. It's an iPhone VoIP app that allows free phone calls to any phone that has the app installed. I thought the terrific audio quality, lack of ads and ease of setup were all positives. Viber has been updated today to version 2.01 with free text messaging to all your Viber contacts. There are also notifications for incoming text messages, and the app has some small GUI improvements. Although Viber currently does not support the iPad or iPod touch, the developers say that is "almost here." Viber Media claims the app has had more than 10 million downloads. An update to Viber has hit the App Store today. I was impressed with the original release of this free VoIP client when it came out early last month. I especially liked the voice quality and the notifications. Like Skype and other networks, Viber allows users to make free calls to other participating phones on the network.  It is touting some advantages over Skype: The app is free, ad free, and doesn’t require logging into a network.  The user can call directly from their contacts, as Viber participants are designated by a small logo.  Calls made to non-Viber contacts are routed through the usual carrier.  Users can invite friends to join the Viber network from within their contacts. Works on WiFi and 3G. Check. You don't need to create a friends list. Check. Alerts you to incoming calls without the app being open. Check. No ads. Check. International and domestic calls between 2 Viber equipped iPhones are free. You aren't burning your voice plan minutes, and soon there will be an Android version.
