21 October 2011 22:06 GMT / By Chris Hall Accessing films or movies on Android has never been much of a problem. Support for a range of video formats, including Flash, means that streaming or playing local content is pretty simple - if you're prepared to do a little fiddling around. Apple haa its movie offering tied up: iTunes has been doling out the goods for years, making it easy to grab yourself a movie for your iPhone or iPad, or just for playback on your PC. Whilst US Android customers have been better served than those in the UK, the arrival of film rentals for UK Android owners gives Google a foot in the door, ahead of probable rivals Amazon/Lovefilm or even Netflix UK. This is a slightly odd App of the Day, because films arrive on your Android device through the Android Market but they are actually handled by Read More

It’s a pretty basic app, and it does what it advertises. Read More
Google as an app developer has released various applications in the Android Market and some of these come pre-installed on most Android devices – like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Search. But others have to be downloaded from Android Market; we have compiled a list of these apps that have been developed by Google. The number comes around 40 apps, although we have tried our best, but we might have missed a few. But not all applications are available in every country and every device; some are regional apps as they support only certain languages or certain apps might support only few device types. So, the best way to check if one of these apps is available in your country is to go to the phone/tablet based Market app and try searching for that particular app – if it comes in the search results than you are good to go. Pano: It's a panoramic picture taking app for your Android phone. Basically, you snap a series of side-by-side individual shots together and Pano automagically stitches them together to create one super long seamless photo. Hell, you can merge together 16 pictures into one humungo 360 degree photo if you wanted! So yeah, you remember that one time you wanted to capture the entire horizon on the beach? Pano does that. Facebook Messenger: Think of it as a cross platform messaging service that enables you to easily talk to people on any platform-Android, iPhone, Facebook, SMS and everything in between. It's not dissimilar to Kik or WhatsApp in this aspect. If your friends are on Facebook, they'll get your message in the Messages (or on their Android or iPhone). If they're not on Facebook, it'll be re-directed as a SMS message (they'll get a message from a random number saying CASEY CHAN Read More

Excellent app I don't plan to rent any movies from Google... However, this app shines when it comes to play all my MeGUI encoded movies. MeGUI is the one and only professional tool to encode videos for Honeycomb. Properly encoded for Android, the image and sound quality of a 720p sample is outstanding while playing it in Google Videos.

very disapointed My reason I rented the movie was to watch it while on a plain flight but I was not informed that this app requires net work access to view the movie. It works just fine if you stream without many pauses. I paused a stream 3 or 4 times over an hour and it locked up. I then attempted to download the video for offline use in an attempt to avoid any streaming bugs. After waiting the 1.5 hours for the download to my transformer I attempted to do the same as above, pause a few times and resume....the same problem occurred. Finally gave up and just let it start over and play. Very disappointed with this app. Glad I only tested with one of the 99 cent videos.
Ed 0.0 stars
Flawless on the Droid Razor/Galaxy Tab! Pinning works perfectly too. Watched a movie in an airplane with no issues. Root users: stop your wining and stick with Netflix...its more your speed. Once you root your phone, the manufacturer and your carrier could care less if it works. Why should any app developer care either? They have no idea what you may have done to your phone and so how can they possibly provide support!
Tyler 0.0 stars
Root has nothing to do with copyright. It's a local setting. Like saying you can't watch a movie using the admin account on your pc. But that's fine...Google must not want rooted money, too industrious for them. with all the morons and restrictions, i might as well just go get the torrents. Easier anyways.
Red Oak 0.0 stars
I've finally been able to download this app and what a disappointment. I bought the Galaxy 10.1 tablet for my travel needs; need to be able to "pin" a movie so I can view later - usually when in the air... I did the firmware, then OS update on the tablet, knowing I needed to be up-to-date in order to play a movie. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be the case. After I rented the movie, I tried to stream the movie. That did not work. Then I followed the Market's instructions on how to pin the movie and waited. Isn't there supposed to be some sort of Status Bar to let me know how long it will take to download, and the progress thus far? There isn't. I waited over an hour and still could not watch the movie. I've asked for a refund of my money. I sincerely hope I will not be told it must be my wireless connection - we are a gaming family, often have 2-3 people playing WoW and streaming music or video through the WiFi on the TV. Even with all this traffic on the network, I'm able to effortlessly stream Amazon rented movies on the tablet, so I know that is not the case. Hope this gets fixed soon.

Didn't ask for this app. The android pre- Installed one is good for me. Don't want a subscription for anything. Let me uninstall now. Come on Verizion. Plus the rating is way off. Too many people hate this app as well.
jason 0.0 stars
At least bump it up to 32 so you have 2 nights to watch. Since, if you have a slower connection, the first evening is wasted downloading the movie!
Michael 0.0 stars
I was streaming a movie rental the other night and discovered that I couldn't fast forward or rewind with this player. If I tried to do either of those functions, the movie would freeze and give me an error. This happened to me during a movie that was 116 minutes long. At minute 100, I lost my connection due to a "server not available." I called support and they told me to "pin" the movie and download it to my Transformer to avoid any future streaming issues. I did that but was unable to fast forward to minute 110 where I left off, I had to start the entire movie over again and check back at minute 100 to finish it. This is ridiculous!! When I was speaking to the support tech about this issue, he told me that this was a "known problem" with tablets. Okay Google, so how about we try to fix it?
Veejay 0.0 stars

Excellent Ap. No buffering. High quality. But not opening to allow play at present, bit frustrating as half way through a film.

The play/pause button is to close to the position slider. When I try to pause I usually reset where I am in my movie. The need to move the slider to the other side so it's not accidentally hit. It would also be nice to see some fast forward and rewind options as well.

Every 5 - 10 minutes, the audio cuts out for about 10 seconds at a time. This has happened with the 2 movies I have watched this way. I had restarted the phone a few times during the first movie I tried to watch. The second movie, I just dealt with it. But this is terrible. A phone thats supposed to be more than capable of handling something like this, chokes. Now I've got to look forward to this happening on the other 4 $.99 movies I rented all at once before testing the player. Droid 3.

I root every phone I get for a reason. There are useful features that I can activate that are not malicious or harmful to my phone or carrier. Rooting gives control of my phone back to me. I paid for it so I should be able to do with it as I like. Blocking this app from root users had nothing to do with support issues. I've never had my phone refuse to properly use an app because it was rooted. This app not working for root users is completely under the developers control.

I doesn't really matter that it doesn't support root. Its a great app that works better than the preinstalled video app on my phone.

Although no rooters is disappointing, the first screen I saw when app opened told me that I couldn't rent because I'm rooted. Would be nicer if the app description said so, so I wouldn't even download app. Would be easy to get upset if I had rented before downloading the app. Google maintains their integrity by being upfront, telling about other methods to view rentals, and offering refunds. Don't hate. Google doesn't lie and Google doesn't cheat.

It has successfully crashed 5 times since your update, so rubbish I take it you lack a contact us section because you're aaware that numerous othzer people would be requesting refunds for movies we can not watch via your app. I wouldnt give you even one star!

First time I rented a movie from the marketplace, the app 'crashes' about a third into the movie, and then sits there, buffering, then pausing, then attempting to play, then buffering, then pausing, spinning blue circle of naff all! You cannot forward/rewind or simply resume. What century is this? Google, fix this pile of mess! Rented another movie last night and the exact same thing happened. Cancelled and received a refund. Are we having fun yet? All this on a brand new Asus Transformer.... I regret not buying an iPad.

In the Gallery it's possible to set a custom Thumbnail for your videos based on when the item was put in the folder. A little kludgey, but it worked. In Videos there is no support for this at all. You get a random screen from the first x number of seconds. Renting videos is nice, but this would be a 5 star one stop app, if Google added the ability to add thumbnail art.

Once again Google tries to dig its claws into as many product and service markets as possible without doing a good enough job from the start and not misleading the consumer. This is primarily a commercial media hub and not a video player. Even the stockplayer on my varied devices is better than this, and mx player beats it hands down without the extra annoyances.

Why isn't this the default video player on my phone... haven't used it much but I give it 5 stars because it looks impressive thus far! :)
David 0.0 stars
The player itself seems to function fine, and the selection of movies is not too bad. What's really frustrating is that (presumably because of fears over piracy) there's no option to stream the content to DNLA devices. My HTC Sensation offers this streaming functionality from the built-in video player, such that I can stream videos directly to my TV, or music to my Sonos players. As a legitimate customer, I'm penalised by the content owners; my experience would be better if I chose to steal the content instead. What is the point of "protecting" content that has already been pirated countless times and is available for free in countless places on the web?

Wish i didn't need this but useful none the less. For all you people out there saying it doesn't work you probably rooted. Rooting is the android equivalent to jailbreaking, which even though you won't be arrested for, is illegal and voids your phone's warranty.

"Cannot fetch license" error on every single movie we purchased and downloaded onto a brand new Droid X. We downloaded several movies thinking each time we had fixed the problem. Tried removing and reinstalling the app. Also had a similar problem Traveling in Canada. Downloaded several movies onto a Galaxy Tab 10.1, which works about 50% the time with Google in the US. But in Canada Google lets you pay for the movie just before telling you that you can't watch it in Canada. Yep, this app literally steals your money as well as a great deal of your time. Incompetent and/or sinister programming effort.

Seems to work well enough, but I'm sorry, I don't always want to watch a movie on a tiny screen. It won't let me output to HDMI for some stupid (I'm gonna assume greedy movie studios or some other nonsense) reason. Next time I'll go to the video store. Rented a movie for the family to watch, tried to watch it from my tablet (asus eee pad transformer) to my tv through HDMI, no go. Had to end up using the "TV out" AV output from my android phone. All I can say is I'm glad I didn't rent the HD version or I'd be demanding a refund. Totally unacceptable. 2 stars because presumably it works well enough to watch movies on the go or by yourself, but some of us have friends and family.

I enjoy the idea of the app - being able to rent movies without a contract and monthly fee for cheaper than going to a movie store (although not cheaper than redbox, which is slightly problematic). I also don't foresee myself renting movies to watch on my little device, if I had a way to play it on my television through an app on a Nintendo Wii, Xbox, PS3, BluRay player, etc., it would be more appealing. Google really needs to start branching out to these popular devices if they want their "Play" line to take off. Also, I'm wondering why I don't have the option to add my own content. I am able to add my own Music to my library, but not my own videos. I have videos of my kids and digital copies of movies that I have purchased on my home computer - they are mine and I should be able to watch them on my devices.

Ok first of all I think it's pretty petty to not allow root users access to this app, do you REALLY think we can't figure out a better way to steal movies than on our phones? Better block anyone who owns a laptop from using this program as well! Second, I had this app hidden in my app drawer because i never used it before, and since the Google Play update it doesn't give me an option to unhide it, which wouldn't be a big deal since I can't use it anyway, but it's pretty annoying none the less.

This is why media industries are dying. When the tech savvy TRY to be honest and pay for things, the media industries put silly restrictions on their products that make it impossible to use. Rooted to free up memory so I could install all this kind of stuff without the phone rebooting itself all day. Guess this is how you reward us for initiative - by implying we will try to steal movies. Thanks the compliment, Google.
Mike 0.0 stars
Two facts. 1. You are losing more money from blocking rooted customers then you would by any kind of pirating happening due to rooted users. 2. There's much better ways to get pirated movies on my Android devices then from using this app.

Everyone complaining about root knows nothing about the app; or else, they would know it is a DRM tool and of course it won't work if you root and destroy the ability to protect data.

I install this app with high hopes, load it up, and it says "Rentals are not available on your device because it appears to be rooted". WTF?? So, from the Legal, and Movie industry standpoint, they don't want anyone to pirate the video, I understand. But from a Hacker/Developer/User standpoint, it sucks!!! Rooted users can still watch rented content in their browsers on YouTube/movies. The only thing they can't do is save for offline use. This app should at least mirror the basic functionality if not the offline viewing. Plenty of normal people root their phones, not just hackers. Some people appreciate freedom, some don't understand the concept.

Good way to anger your customers, Google. At the very least you could provide a VALID reason as to why you block rooted devices from using this service, and not some crap "security" excuse like you do for the Wallet app. What happened to open source innovation?

Thanks, but no thanks. Installed and 15 seconds later uninstalled. Get your act together Google. Are you going to impose the same restrictions on Google music when it becomes available here in FR? Nate 1.0 stars
I'm going to start by saying I have never bootlegged a single app because I didn't want to pay the small amount good developers ask for. If an app or service is good, I contribute and purchase it! I am an IT consultant and I root my Android devices to make them function more like a real computer than a closed off feature phone. Backup of the whole OS, file management, removing bloatware, and overclocking are my main uses of Root. Not to pirate lower quality movies I could get from a torrent site at higher quality and not even have to pay a penny. This idea that root breaks DRM is either bullshit or Poor coding because Windows has Admin access the second you install it and they found ways to ensure DRM works. You are losing a HUGE portion of your customers, who would be Happy to pay for your service, by imposing rediculous restrictions like this!!! We bought Androids to get a real computer phone, not an iFeaturePhone.

Sometimes when I read forms I lose hope for humanity. Its truly sad how many people are smart enough to know how to root there phone and remove bloatware. But not smart enough to know that google, like amazon and apple are at the mercy of movie makers. Its not available to rooted users not because google doesn't like you. But because the movie makers won't allow them to sell it otherwise. This app works great for renting movies, same price as amazon video on-demand, itunes, vudu and any other pay as you go on-demand service. The nice perk google gives is it lets you re-rent movies for a dollar.

Installed to rate. For a company supposedly in favor of our "freedom" with our devices they sure limit the hell out of what their apps will do on a rooted phone. I'm not going to pay to pirate a movie. I like a custom device I'm not a thief. Poor form Google.

Really? Apparently you cannot use this app if your phone is rooted. I rooted mine because I didn't want the crapware Verizon put on my phone, not so i could do some "hacking". I guess there will be no renting for me. And no, I won't use my computer to do so. Thanks google... -_-

Watched two movies - one on laptop, one on evo 4g - but each had an issue with VERY low volume. I watched one on a plane, but didn't finish since I couldn't even hear the dialogue. 4 stars when fixed. 5 stars when prices go down.

I downloaded a movie only to have it not play. I then went to write a note requesting help. However, that s screen required tons of answers and data! All information available on the Android. I'm confident Google does this on purpose to avoid paying for support costs. I then replied to the receipt which was of course rejected. They do not want to help me, only take my money. Google is acting just like any other large non. Customer focused...profit hungry corp.

I used this app to rent and watch Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Given the fact that this was the only place I could even find Psycho available to rent, and for only $3 at that, I thought I had a pretty good deal. Unfortunately, the film wouldn't even begin to play on my computer. I tried frequently to get it to start up, only to be met with the message that "An error occurred. Please try again later". I tried on two other computers and on other web browsers to no avail (although if Google Movies had worked on Firefox or IE instead of Chrome, there would be an entirely different review being written at this moment). Finally I relented and decided to pull the movie up on my Galaxy SII, which worked fine UP UNTIL the last 2 minutes of the movie. At that point the "connection to the server" kept getting dropped and I had to "click to try again" 10 times before the last 2 minutes of the film were done. I'm generally a huge fan of Google, I buy books and music and apps from them as often as I can, but this product has so far been a disappointment.
Kobby 4.0 stars
UI is great but functionality is mediocre. Let us be able to upload our own videos to the cloud and stream it to our devices. Trust me it would really improve the rating of this app. All the people who dislike this app should unroot their phones. Google did not tell you to root your phones did they? So you can't be mad that your rooted phone does not work with a Google app.
Daniel 1.0 stars
You guys have really angered your loyal users ever since releasing the 'Play' market... No one cares about reading books on their phones... If we wanted to do that we'd buy a Kindle. Now you're trying to make us pay a fortune to rent movies. Ridiculous. I regret buying an Android phone.

I waited so long to get this in Australia- now I'm denied Failed.. If I didn't root my phone it simply wouldn't work with the stock Samsung bloatware! Now on CM9 it works the way it was intended with ICS Please allow rooted phones access.

I can hire 2 new releases + 5 weekly's for the price of 2 (old) movies here, from CIVIC or BB. Considering we actually do this EVERY week, I see no value whatsoever in this app or service. If studios (or Google) could provide movies at $1 under for hire, or a few $ for purchase then I could see them selling at a crazy rate, still making both parties a good profit. This is simply a cash-in and of no benefit. I'll stick to the video store, others the torrents. Shame, I was excited..
Gary 1.0 stars
Blocking rooted phones! Seriously? I didn't know Google had been bought by Apple.
Brett 4.0 stars
This is a good stable competitor to apples version. As for the rooters the main problem google has with allowing rooted devices access is its copywrite protection requirements to the producers of the content which I understand, however this again highlights that google needs to invest in a good built in subroot uset ability so we can have the level or root access developers require without comprimising the entire platform. The issue should mr more about not needing to root in order to develope!
Brett 2.0 stars
It would be nice to see a buy option! It doesnt say anywhere how long the rental is and pretty expensive for a rental.. Might as well drive to the video store, would be cheaper

Why remove the ability to mirror to a HDTV with HDMI out. One the best features on a non rooted ASUS Transformer prime is rendered completely useless with using this service. The sad part about it they screw you into renting a movie at least once before you even realize it.
satchmo 1.0 stars
Maybe this is just a bug, but why can't I output the movie I have paid for from my transformer TF101 to my telly? Only the sound can be heard. I just hope that this isn't some deliberate decision to avoid supposed piracy from legitimate consumers, but based on all the other reviews here, I don't hold out much hope.

I'm rooted to enjoy my Galaxy S2 to the fullest potential. I'm not rooted to steal from the greedy f¥¢k€Rs. So I'm ripping the movie from a dvd I rented for 1.99 which is also the purchase price on the play store. Screw this app! Good thing your trying to stop piracy. What's with the pricing. Again another company who thinks Australians should be ripped off. Our government is going to take you, Apple and others to task over your price gouging. Take note of that. Reduce your prices and give access to rooted phones. How hard is it to realise its your fault for people pirating movies etc. You guys are ripping people off.

I have a samsung galaxy prevail. When I download the rentals after payment, I am told the rental expire in 30 days, when asked if I want to watch play back it says expire in 24 hrs. Now I can actually watch the movie which is great, but what would be the point of buying a 30 day movie you can't watch up til 30 days? Just wanted to know. Lucky it only cost me 1.99 each. Google, please lose my debt card number. But yeah awesome movie though. THANKS. ;)

Bitcloud 1.0 stars
And I'm not supporting this product. As someone else pointed out, open source means the community helps to develop Android, and in return the community gets treated like a community and not a commodity. I'm almost ready to thank you for all the fish Google. You're forgetting your mantra.
William 4.0 stars
Does what it does pretty well. Only major complaint is that I can't choose exactly what resolution I want it to stream at, only HD or not, unlike on a PC where I get to choose 360, 480, 720 or 1080p for a HD rental. Another issue is that when resuming playback after a previous session it sometimes doesn't stream data but just displays the paused symbol. To the people complaining about this not working on rooted devices, this is likely not Google's choice. You have to realise that Google is profoundly unpopular with the entertainment industry so if they want to get any content on their network then they have to bow to the demands of the content holders.

So most people that take the time to write a review are the ones who really like their phones, therefore its very likely that they rooted it. And the fact that this app rejects rooted will only get it bad reviews. I thought android was different to Apple... Very dissapointed google...
Kanaida 1.0 stars
Just buy netflix and let them handle movies please. No more of this root blocking garbage and pay per movie model, or I see this being part of next year's spring cleaning of unused Google services. Drm is always bypassed anyways, look at blurays and hdmi, anyone can copy them. But they lag our tvs when selecting inputs for no reason. It's pointless and and harmful to people who are playing legitimately.

As a non-rooted phone owner, I thank Google for finally delivering good quality movies to us in Australia. This service mostly removes the need to illegally download movies.Rental charges are cheaper when compared to going to the video hire shop and much more convenient also. No late fee charges for starters! Only have phone at present but look forward to when I get my tablet to download to and plug in or All-share wireless to my big screen Plasma TV. Don't need rooted phones for my usage, and don't really see the advantage in doing it either. Every time you get an update, you've got to reload all your apps and some settings, and apparently cant use Google wallet either!! And most Android users DONT root their phones, only a minority seem to need this process, so keep working on providing us non-rooted users with great apps!
Sim 1.0 stars
Sorry Google. Too expensive. Try again. This time, keep the ease of Piracy in mind and the fact that people will pay a couple bucks for the ease of use and guaranteed quality, but not $7 for stuff they could have pirated months earlier. Also, my phone isn't rooted, but I still agree with all below, you encourage open source and then do this. Lastly, I read that there is no way to HDMI out from a TF201. WHY! You morons! That's the way you will rent movies currently. No one has android TV's yet and watching a film on a tablet or phone is generally crap. Poor form for one of my favorite companies in the world.
justin 1.0 stars
Is this just what australians have to pay or is usa pricing just as much? I'm going to the shops to rent one its cheaper. My device is rooted anyway you no customised to my liking the whole idea behind android! Unistalling.
ireece 1.0 stars
I find it funny how Google believes by blocking root users, they'll stop piracy. Erm, no. If I want to pirate a film badly enough, I'll torrent it... its far easier... Google, by blocking access to paying root users, you're promoting piracy for them.
Fassell 1.0 stars
Rooted users should not be punished because they decided to root their device to get more out of it. I wouldn't buy a computer that had admin rights on it, that I couldn't take off. Why should buying an OPEN SOURCE device be any different. If you were against rooting, then you should not have created OPEN SOURCE technology. I downloaded this app just to post this comment, this is unbelievable that you would do this to a majority of YOUR customers. Look at your reviews and notice that more than double the amount of people rated this with 1 star vs 5 stars.

Are you Google TV or You Tube or Android or Chrome web store or Chrome OS? I understand if you want to persue seperate products / market segments but the user experience across these needs to click. When I ends up with a myriad of the same product over and over with each only half done and disjointed like this you are just segmenting the market to add no value. I end up without a product that does what I need it to do and it leave me frustrated... Larry what happened to focusing Google on doing less things but doing them well? Unfortunately your tool does not let me give negative stars. To top it the thing wont work on my device as I rooted it and for some reason Google discriminates on this between desktop and handtop.

C'mon Google - you give us the freedom to develop and modify Android - making it my preference for mobile operating system, and then you stop you own apps from working on rooted devices? Piracy exists and is normally very fast and easy, don't stop people from easily paying for content - that's not going to help anyone.

Worked like a charm with my Photon connected to my tv via HDMI. Picture was a bit dark but only slightly & I assume this is only due to the restrictions of a cell phone display (to be expected). Also, movies are priced a little too high. Only thing that justifies paying that much is convenience of not having to go anywhere to rent (which saves on effort to and gas). However, if I were to rent multiple movies in a night it would be more worth while to go to the video store. Free rental after X rentals maybe
