The pros and cons of making a digital jump with comics
Calendar16 Tue, 07 Feb 2012 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Anime News Network did an in-depth comparison of reading manga on an iPad vs. a Nook Color today, after Viz Media sent them both devices so they could do a hands-on look at making the digital jump. After taking a hit from the closing of Borders, Viz decided to turn its popular Shonen Jump publication into a digital-only product. Launched in January, Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha is $25.99 for an annual subscription, with three of its flagship series -- One Piece, Bleach and Naruto -- now running almost concurrent with the Japanese release. Individual issues can be rented for 99 cents for a 4-week period. The results aren't surprising. By holding up a volume of manga next to an iPad, it shows that the iPad is right about the same size as a manga volume and the experience is just as good as reading a print book. Digital Manga is the Future!
nailszz6 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Excellent app! Very clean, easy to nagivate, purchase, and read manga. Entire free volumes to start you out is a big bonus as well! I tried the whole manga thing with kindle, and the screen is just too darn small, and a zoom feature on the kindle is a joke. However this manga app allows you to zoom around easily anywhere on page to get a closer look at the art or text. Looking forward to your expanded library *cough*gunnm*cough*, hopefully digital manga becomes a hit sooner rather than later. I'm done with physical manga, digitial for life!
Great App, needs to fix 4.2 compatability.

This app really is the future, and I think that VIZ needs to focus on this as much as possible. That said, in 4.2 the app crashes upon attempting to download a manga. I really hope they fix this soon. I also would love to see them add Shonen Jump to this app, and allow people with subscriptions to access it. But overall, if the downloading bug was fixed, I would give this 5 stars.
Good Start!
pipopaz 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
At last Viz decided to jump into the Digital distribution. Good Points: -The App is simple, clean and most importantly it works. -$5 per volume is quite fair in my opinion. -Free previews, that is the 1st chapter of the series, and for a limited time Death note v1 is free. -The manga is read from left to right just like original Japanese authors intended. -Image quality is good. Need to be Included: -Panel view like some Comic Apps have. -More series and Volumes available -Better organization of 'My manga' Overall, It is a good start, depending on the effort they are going to put in making more series and volumes available and including new features to the reading experience, will decide whether the Manga Digital Distribution will be a success and will be widespread.
It is about time
masesq 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been waiting for VIZ to enter into the digital age and thank god they have. The app is easy to use and if you have been using any of the comic apps out there you will fall in love with it right away. VIZ just don't hesitate on the conversion . . . get your library going full steam ahead. If you make it available the masses will come.
