iPhone 4 SIRI Alternatives
Calendar16 Tue, 06 Dec 2011 17:20:25 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/06/2011 at 9:20am | by Cory Bohon Will Siri be available on the iPhone 4? Or do we have to pay $200+? Unfortunately, Siri is iPhone 4S–specific, and won’t work on earlier versions of the iPhone. But there are other tools that you can use to get Siri-like functionality on your existing iPhone. For starters, Voice Control has been built into iPhones since the iPhone 3GS. Hold down the Home button for a few seconds, and speak simple commands like, “Call Cory,” or specify songs or artists to play from your music library. Voice Control can also answer simple queries like “What day is it?” or “What time is it?” Vlingo works similar to Siri. Just tap on the Press & Speak button and speak your message. However, that’s really where Voice Control’s functionality stops. To get more commands, we recommend Vlingo. This free app sends text messages, emails, finds Read More

Top 5 iPhone apps for Droid/Android switchers
Calendar16 Mon, 07 Feb 2011 16:32:56 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Monday, Feb 7, 2011 | Switching from Droid or another Android device like the Samsung Facinate to the iPhone — maybe the new Verizon iPhone? — and curious which are the best, most must-have apps you need to make yourself feel at home? Well read on for TiPb’s top 5 most recommended, most must-have apps to get your Android experience maximized on iPhone. Unlike Android, iPhone doesn’t (yet) have broad and deeply integrated voice features in iOS. While there’s some Voice Control commands for making calls and playing music, that’s about it. Enter Google Mobile which not only adds voice search but also bundles in Google Goggles functionality. From location and maps to contacts and the web to most anything you can say or point your iPhone 4 camera at, Google Mobile gets you answers and fast. Vlingo App Review
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Mar 2010 16:43:55 UTC +00:00
Vlingo is an app for everybody who finds the virtual keyboard on their iPhone a little bit too fiddly.  Not only that, but it’s suited to anyone who loves the voice search found in Google’s own app, or just someone who dreamed of a little more functionality than the stock voice control feature offers on an iPhone 3GS. Yes, Vlingo (iTunes link) is a voice recognition application along the same lines as Dragon Dictation, only it has a switch where one can specify either a British or American accent will be used, giving Vlingo more international appeal.  You can dial numbers, search the Internet, find locations on a map, update your Facebook or Twitter status or pen an email or SMS.  Or at least you can if you pay. We’ll get this out of the way now.  Although the Vlingo app with voice dial, social network updates and search is free, Read More

This Week’s App Store Updates – 5th March 2010
Calendar16 Fri, 05 Mar 2010 15:41:32 UTC +00:00
Browsing the App Store this weekend?  Here are eight new or updated apps worth taking a closer look at if you are: Rayman enters a 3D environment for the first time, with 45 levels to explore and conquer by running, climbing, swimming and occasionally even flying!  The port looks astounding from the screenshots, but it should do as the download is a hefty 248MB! This is the official iPhone app for the Washington Post newspaper and notable due to it charging readers for the pleasure of downloading, something few newspapers do.  The $1.99 cost gives 12 months full access to articles, blogs and photos.  Content can be shared via email and Twitter and you can setup the homepage to show content you want to read first. The latest game version of the famous TV show features customizable, cutesy characters who can play through the familiar pricing games before going through to Read More
Vlingo has launched an enhanced version of its voice-powered iPhone application, allowing users to send email and text messages simply by speaking into their beloved device. Unlike similar speech recognition apps that offer a single use only, Vlingo delivers up to six voice-powered features including: email, SMS Paste, social site updates, maps and voice dial. Here are some examples how you can use Vlingo: It’s that simple. And you can also use the application for voice dialing, search, maps, Facebook and Twitter updates. The new email and SMS Paste messaging features can be added to the app for $6.99 each, or both for $9.99. by Since Vlingo first introduced its voice control app for the BlackBerry more than a year and a half ago, smartphones and voice-to-speech technology have evolved quite a bit. Today, the company has launched a pretty major update to its iPhone app, adding the ability to send e-mail and SMS messages, plus a redesigned new interface. When Vlingo was first released for the iPhone back in December 2008, the voice-to-text market was still pretty small for mobile devices. Sure, Google’s iPhone app introduced voice search, but the market in general was pretty small. That’s not the case anymore. Dragon Search, Dragon Dictation, Bing for the iPhone and Siri are all recent voice-to-text applications that can offer some of the similar functionality as Vlingo. The big difference is that Vlingo lets you do more from within a single application. You don’t have to open up a new or different app to do Read More

Vlingo 2.0 for iPhone Brings Voice to Email, SMS
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Mar 2010 17:52:05 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Thursday, Mar 4, 2010 | Vlingo 2.0 for iPhone [Free with in-app purchase - iTunes link] brings an all new, all prettier graphical user interface to the table, as well as Email and SMS Paste dictation — as an in-app purchase. The new UI looks great and more importantly, works great. The icons are big and easy to hit and helpful tips are littered everywhere. You can tap to start recording and tap again to stop, or just hold down, talk, and release. For the various situations where you need to use voice instead of typing — like while driving (if it’s legal in your region!) — that kind of ease of use is priceless. With the free app you get Maps, Search, Social (Facebook and Twitter), and Voice Dial. As mentioned, the Email and SMS Paste dictation are via in-app purchase. Note, it’s called SMS Paste because, Read More

Vlingo 2.0 – Power Of Your Voice
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Mar 2010 14:00:50 UTC +00:00
Voice activated apps are becoming a very popular category for the iPhone with standouts like Dragon Dictate and Siri commanding space on many iPhone home screens. One of the first apps in this category, Vlingo, has undergone some improvements eliminating the multitasking required to import your dictated content from app to app. The popularity of these types of apps are obvious. It’s a great way to increase your efficiency without having to navigate menus and buttons and also serves as a safer alternative to using your device while driving. Push a button. Say your command and the application handles the rest. Although speech recognition isn’t 100% perfect, the makers of the app do promise that the app learns your tendencies and corrects them over time. Like Dragon, you’re also prompted to an optional loading of your contacts to Vlingo’s servers to improve recognition. With this latest offering, Vlingo has undergone some Read More
Vlingo In Review – Voice To Text On Steroids!
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Mar 2010 07:52:12 UTC +00:00
Voice to text is far from new technology. The ability to speak into your phone and tell it to call a specific person has been around for quite sometime. Unfortunately, that’s really been about all you could do till now. With recent improvements to everyone’s favorite iDevice, we found ourselves able to launch/control other features of the phone but even that was just a marginal improvement.  Taking the next step in voice-to-text evolution, vlingo corporation offer more than just s sonorous name in their latest update of Vlingo, they offer email and SMS paste, too! Feel free to discuss this review of Vlingo in our forums. The folks at vlingo know how to design pretty.  The app is rich in blues, oranges and grey, is clean, legible and navigation is a breeze. With the main focus of Vlingo being voice, it takes center stage on your screen with all other buttons or Read More
Vlingo 2 adds more voice power to iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Mar 2010 05:15:00 UTC +00:00
In the burgeoning market for iPhone voice recognition apps, the free Dragon Dictate clearly holds the top spot. In fact, this paragraph was dictated using DragonDictate (with some minor edits after the fact). However, the application doesn't always shine when it comes to getting your text quickly and easily into different places where you might want to use it. You can send an e-mail or a text message if you want to, but you can't update your Facebook status or send a Twitter message without copying and pasting. Performing a search requires an entirely separate app. To make your dictation process easier -- at least when it comes to getting your text to go where you want, when you want -- there's the latest update to the Vlingo app, which we first reviewed last June. Vlingo 2.0 is trying to up the ante for text recognition by putting all the 'next Read More
ChaCha Beats Google and Yahoo in Mobile Voice Search Tests
Calendar16 Thu, 13 Aug 2009 14:09:23 UTC +00:00
But was this a fair fight? Mobile analyst firm MSearchGroove has just published the results of a series of tests which show that the mobile search service ChaCha beat out two other voice-enabled search applications on the iPhone when it comes to search query accuracy. [Update, Ed: a commenter points out that the report was actually sponsored by ChaCha] To test this, the researchers used Google's own mobile application and Vlingo for iPhone, an app that lets you search both Google or Yahoo. Oddly, they ignored Yahoo's mobile app, which also has voice search built in. The results of their study aren't entirely shocking: if you want to be understood, ask a human, not a computer. ChaCha's mobile search service can be accessed both by SMS and by calling a toll-free 1-800 number. Since these tests focused on voice search, the phone-in method was used. When using ChaCha, the service identified Read More

Vlingo adds voice control to older iPhones
Calendar16 Sun, 21 Jun 2009 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Pity the poor iPhone 3G owner who now has to grapple with reality; yes, what was until Friday the world's coolest smartphone is now simply a piece of yesterday's tech, as current as a punchcard and as enduring as a wax cylinder recording on a hot afternoon. No, not really -- the iPhone 3G is just as cool as it was a week ago, and for $99 it's a relative bargain. Still, there's some envy on the wind. Some of our readers have apparently been so dazzled by Apple's enthusiastic promotion of the new iPhone 3G S that they were fooled into believing that the hardware-linked features of the 3G S (the compass and the voice controls, specifically) would be made available on the 3G with the delivery of the 3.0 software update. They have written to us, irate and frustrated, wanting to know what happened to their promised features. We Read More
Voice dialing is pretty common these days, but the standard vox-recognition systems used by the major cell carriers leave a lot to be desired.  Let's say, for example, you've got the studio lines for your favorite New York City radio station saved in your address book, by either call letters (e.g. WAXQ) or it's "public identity" (in this case, Q-104.3).  Chances are good that, if you try to voice-dial using either, your phone's gonna go "huh?" or, at best, "Sorry.  No match found." In an attempt to solve this, we stumbled across a neat (and free) app called Vlingo, which adds not only better voice-dialing recognition, but improved voice control of your phone in general.  Vlingo currently supports the iPhone (download from the App Store) and various Blackberry handsets (they'll email a link to your Berry, then you download and install over the air); a flavor for Nokia N95, E51, or E71 Read More

wjdoyle 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0.17665
Please review this company's privacy policy before using this app. You will find that they have the authority to share your contact names with their contractors and subcontractors, but when I sent them an email asking for their definition of "contractor" and "subcontractor", I received the following response, "The questions you are asking are non-public confidential information." They can argue the need for accurate voice recognition all they want, but I'm not giving up my contacts without an explanation of who will have access to them.
Surpassing Other Apps
cbg777 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0.17665
I'm somewhat of an iPhone professional. A lot of people call me for help with their iPhone. I test a lot of apps and delete a lot of apps. I delete the apps because their either built for young users or they're really basic or both. This app surpasses all the apps in the app store to date. It's a sophisticated app connecting you to several apps and options on your iPhone by voice. Most apps are one dimensional that you can use to do one thing. Vlingo integrated absolutely into the core of your iPhone user experience. This app deserves to be integrated into the iPhone update making it part of the Apple software. It should be more than a springboard icon, it should be part of all the native iPhone apps. My complaint echos others. I don't like not being warned about my contacts uploading to Vlingo servers. This is intolerable. It's a tolerable thing to do this with a warning. It's intolerable doing it wihout a warning. I encourage developers to consider what myself and others are saying. At the very least "the very least" warn users before hitting the contact sync button. This is a 5 star beginning crippled for privacy reasons.
No Privacy

Sounds like a decent app, downloaded it, but after reading privacy policy and that they record pretty much everything you say, I deleted.

Bruce P 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0.17665
I’ve use vlingo on a BlackBerry and must say I was quite impressed, so I’m thrilled to see they now have an iPhone version available. I’ve tried out a handful of iPhone voice apps, including the new Google mobile app, Say Who, Say Where, etc. and must say I find this one to be hands down the best so far, and having seen what vlingo is capable of I think it’s safe to say this will only get better.
Wow.....
WiiHacker17 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
As far as working and what it does , this is a 5 star app , the thing the kills me is the fact u have no privacy.
paranoids are all wrong
RL n AL 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
you freaks complaining about the privacy policy have got it all wrong. its specifically states that the only thing they collect are names from your address book...no numbers and no addresses. it also says they do use your info in any way outside of vlingo. i really hate the people screaming privacy this and that....if you want to be 100% protected then give up your cell phone, your computer...hell prob even your tv since its going all digital, and of course your home phone if its all bundled together....then move off the grid, live off the land and then you'll have total privacy, unless of course google earth gets you!!!!!! you babies make me laugh.....btw vlingo is sick, destroys every voice app in the store. i use this a few times daily, and have done so for the last couple months and i think it has been wrong maybe two or three times......we're talkin' way above 95% accuracy.....
Possibly better than Google's!
tizmagik 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0.17665
This app is great! I would even say it's better than Google's voice recognition app. Although the accuracy isn't as good as Google's, this app just does more. I love the integrated status update capabilities for facebook and Twitter and the contacts auto-dial is great. The only things stopping this from being a 5 star app I would say are the fact that you have to press the button again to tell it you're done speaking (why? It should detect silence at the end of a phrase like Google's app) and it doesn't recognize proximity triggers (putting the phone up to your ear) like Google's. I'm definitely going to keep tabs on this app and I look forward to future updates!
Nicely Done!

This app is fantastic!! It crashed at first but I did a soft reset and now it works perfectly. It saves lots of typing time and let's you just do stuff. For example, hit 'search' say "google lyrics stairway to heaven" - perfect! Hit 'maps' and say "420 5th avenue new york city new york" perfect!! Dial the phone, whatever, it all just works.
Better than Google

mshay365 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0.17665
hey three words myspace socail status!!!!! Otherwise I love it
Excellent.
shaws2011 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I love how everyone listed on here who actually has it and has really worked with it give it 4 or 5 stars claiming they love it, and then how just a few people giving it 1 star for retarded reasons like "I can't get it on my iPod Touch" or "it doesn't have AIM" or "I can't get it to work"(when they haven't tried reinstalling) bring down the overall average to 3. This app is EXCELLENT. Unbelievable accuracy, and better than all it's competitors. It is completely free, so if you've got dumb complaints that don't apply to anything, keep your 1 star to yourself.
Awsome
Nik9 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0.17665

This app ROX!!!

I'm Impressed!

I wasn't expecting this app to work as well as it does, but I'm very impressed with it. Works great. Being able to call someone just by saying, "call so-and-so mobile", is amazingly convenient. Very well done!
Killer App!
Edobomination 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0.17665
I've tried a few of the voice apps out on the App Store and they were spotty at best when recognizing what you say. Not this app. I've tried map locations, dialing contacts and web searches. It performs pretty damn well. This will save me a lot of time typing. Other apps like this just didn't measure up and weren't reliable so I never ended up using them. I'll be using this app frequently. Already moved it down to the bottom 4 apps on my iPhone that are always visible no matter which home screen you are on.
Surprisingly good
Hease 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0.17665
The only trouble it has in terms of recognition is foreign names in my contacts, otherwise it is really good
