Siri voice assistant alternatives are being marketed to Android devices with alarming regularity. Since the Siri technology was first embedded into iOS 5 on the new iPhone 4S (even though a Siri app had been available for some time), a number of Android developers have brought similar apps to Android. There’s also been a number of voice assistant apps that have been available for quite a while. Google’s Android OS already has built-in voice commands. It may not be as personalized or sophisticated as Siri, or have captured the public’s imagination, but the technology has been around for a while. It can do things like search, call people, send text messages and so on. Still, it is a little devoid of personality and not always 100 percent accurate. So how do some of the new (and old) Siri alternatives for Android shape-up? Just released this week was Cluzee, which received one Read More

The faster iPhone with better software and an improved camera went on sale in seven countries Friday as hundreds of buyers camped out for hours to be among the first to get one. The iPhone 4S and its new iOS 5 operating system offer a host of new features, including Siri voice control, a Cards app for sending paper greetings in the mail, Reminders that help keep you up-to-date, and Find my Friends for tracking people down.  But Android users don’t have to feel left out. There are a host of third-party apps that bring this functionality to Google’s mobile OS. When you spend as much time behind the wheel as I do, you quickly develop a short list of must-have car tech apps. These days, I rarely hop into the driver's seat without Vlingo Voice with InCar Beta running on my handset. At its most basic, this voice command app allows me to initiate calls, fire off text messages, and perform a variety of other tasks with the sound of my voice. I know what you're about to ask me: "Can't Google Voice Search already do these things?" Sure it can, but Vlingo's got a few features and a custom interface called InCar that that is optimized for in-car use. A feature called SafeReader, for example, processes incoming text messages and reads them aloud, so I never have to choose between missing an important message and taking my eyes off the road. Another feature, called Auto Listen, allows me to interact Read More
You made it to Friday of a short week. I’m proud of you. Rest up over the weekend because next week actually has five full workdays in it. While you’re laying low, browse through these fresh Android apps – Vlingo gets on the Magic Bus with an in-car interface; News360 arrives in a phone version; and Fieldrunners HD, a fanciful tower defense game, finally arrives in the Market. The free voice recognition app gets a major update in the Android Market. Vlingo offers a new UI that features a list format for using in your hand or a pumped-up In-Car mode for use on the road. The list format makes it easier to understand all the many things that the app can do with voice commands – including search the Web, dictate and send text messages, update Facebook, and much more. The In-Car mode provides hands-free safe access to sending or Read More
With Google I/O this week, there was a noticeable focus on productivity and phone navigation apps, all enhancing the Android experience. The yearly event was also an opportunity for Google to flex its muscles, revealing a new Music app that takes the personal cloud to the next level. The combined efforts of Google as a platform owner, and developers in the Android Market, make Android devices all the more competitive with Apple iPhones, and this week’s updates bring hope of Android’s tablet potential, perhaps one day toppling the iPad reign. Google I/O, the yearly event for innovative products and services, took place this week in San Francisco, giving the search giant a fine platform for launching a highly anticipated app for music. Dubbed Music Beta, the app is a cloud-based service that grants you instant access to your personal music collection from any connected Android device. The good thing about the Read More
Americans and Britons both speak English. But talk to someone from New York, USA and someone from Yorkshire, England, you’ll notice that there are clear differences between each brand. Android users in the United Kingdom will be happy to know that Vlingo has recognized this and introduced localization for accents in the UK. The latest version of Vlingo does a better job of recognizing speech patterns, which will produce more accurate results when using Virtual Assistant to perform voice searches for EPL fixtures or posting to Facebook. (Ed note: based on my experience with America’s many different accents, I’m guessing the same will hold true and someone from Liverpool may experience different results from someone from Cardiff.) Vlingo is a popular Android app that can “turn your words into action.” Using voice commands, users can search the web, start a Google Maps Navigation, send text messages, or even post to Facebook Read More
Vlingo for Android has been updated today – they’re calling it “Oyster” and it adds even more integration with some of Android’s top applications. Speaking queries like “Find hotels for next Friday in San Francisco” will take you into Kayak to give you a listing of – you guessed it – Hotels in San Francisco on December 24th. Likewise, “Where is Tangled in 3D playing” will bring up local showtimes and locations for Tangled 3D. OpenTable integration has also been added. Finally, the ActionBar is like an expanded Google Search where Vlingo will show you their recommended results alongside Google’s or anyone else’s. Typing “find Italian” will bring up a list of Italian restaurants near you, and that’s where OpenTable comes in: you can book reservations right there. All this and more can be found in the Android market now. [via Androinica] Vlingo is your very own Virtual Assistant. Simply speak Read More

Vlingo is a words-to-action app for your Android that allows you to compose text messages and emails, update social networking statuses, conduct web searches, and make phone calls – all using voice command. Tap the home screen widget and tell the phone what task you'd like it to complete, always stating the command first. For Example: TEXT Ryan: "You busy later?" CALL Mom. SEARCH movie times in Los Angeles. In theory, this app is supposed to be a great app for a traveler or the person who spends a lot of time in the car by providing a safe and legal alternative to texting and other distractions. However, the application has a few flaws that could make practical use in the car very difficult. For starters, the application does not support Bluetooth voice dialing, which means you might have to fiddle a lot, going between written and speaking communication devices. This Read More

Recent studies have suggested that bans on texting behind the wheel aren't solving the problem of distracted driving. One study showed that the collision rate actually increased after bans were enacted. One potential solution is Vlingo InCar, an app that allows users to text hands-free. The full version was added to the Android Market Tuesday. Released in beta earlier this month, the app tries to help drivers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. "Data from Vlingo's third annual 'Texting While Driving in America' report found that while more state laws exist today to ban texting while driving, 35 percent of mobile phone users continue to text behind the wheel," Dave Grannan, Vlingo's president and chief executive, said in a press release. "Since launching Vlingo InCar on Oct. 7, the average user is using Vlingo 65 percent more each day. Now, with additional carrier support, we are Read More
Worth Reading? If you are, an Android user that liked the Vlingo app that launched in beta recently is now available for all Android users. The app allows users of Android devices to send and receive text messages without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. The app is on the Android Market right now. Vlingo InCar goes into listen mode when it gets a Bluetooth connection. The driver can use a wake up word to get the phone to listen to what they say for a text message. In addition to the text feature, the app will also allow you to send and respond to messages and make calls using only your voice. Using their voice drivers can also access Vlingo Answers for questions like the number of feet in a mile. Read More

Calendar16 Fri, 08 Oct 2010 18:40:21 UTC +00:00
Vlingo on Thursday announced the launch of a free Android app that lets users send and respond to messages, make calls, and get directions all hands free. The app is called Vlingo InCar and works for Android 2.1 devices on Sprint, including the HTC Evo 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G. The app is available for download from the Android Market right now. The slick-looking app’s home screen has give main icons—Call, Text, Navigate, SafeReader, and Tap & Speak. After turning on the app, the user can say a “wake up word” and then give it voice prompts to activate calling, texting, navigation, or reading of texts. Adroid-based phones contain support for adding tons of applications that can be used while driving and in this post you’ll find the best of them. All these Android apps will help you reach destinations fast and easy, as i will present you with maps and navigations apps, apps that can find the nearest gas stations, remember where you’ve parked app and others more. See them below : These 3 applications are included in Android phones, since the day Android 2.0 has been released. The Maps application allows users to set ‘Star’ destinations and place from your PC and after that you can port them to your Android-based devices. Navigation is a turn-by-turn GPS navigational utility. The Car Mode helps drivers greatly as they don’t have to hold the phone as it has voice guidance incorporated. As i said before, these are all included in Android phones, though if your device doesn’t Read More
Vlingo Adds Voice Check-ins to Foursquare «
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Sep 2010 20:58:06 UTC +00:00
Vlingo today added voice support to Foursquare on Android handsets, allowing Foursquare users to check in, find friends and send shouts through speech-to-text. The updated version of Vlingo, available in the Android Market, can also be used to update a user’s social status on Facebook, Twitter or both at the same time. The implementation of the new voice feature is well done and takes advantage of Android’s ability to use home screen widgets. From a hands-free perspective, Vlingo requires a minimum of button presses, although in the future, I’d love to see the app simply stop listening once it detects silence for a second or two, much as Android’s native voice-to-text features work. All in all, the use of voice for even short bursts of texts often trumps pecking on a software keyboard, so the new Vlingo version will appeal to many. As mobile broadband latency decreases with next-generation networks, voice Read More
Check in on Foursquare Using Your Voice [APPS]
Calendar16 Thu, 02 Sep 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
by It may not be the most socially acceptable way to check in, but Vlingo has created a way for Android app users to check in on Foursquare with their voices. It’s a speech-to-checkin feature that will save time, even if it does raise a few eyebrows. With the new app, Android users can speak a simple “check in to [insert place name]” command after tapping the home screen button. The command will prompt Vlingo to automatically pull up the location in question, and other nearby venues, on Foursquare, providing users with a fast alternative to touch-based Foursquare checkins. Vlingo’s voice-activated Foursquare integration not only includes support for checkins, but also lets users post voice shouts and ask Vlingo, “Where are my friends?,” or “Who’s nearby?” to pull up a list of Foursquare friends who have checked in recently. Vlingo for Android also supports voice-activated, speech-to-text status updates for Facebook and Read More
A few weeks back we mentioned Vlingo for Android, which at the time was lowered in price from $9.99 down to free as a response to the Google Voice Actions for Android app. Of course, it seems as if Vlingo had the advantage at the time given their app works on more than Android 2.2 Froyo, however they have returned with yet another update and one that will make Foursquare users happy. Images courtesy: AppBrain “Location and social networking have become an integral part of consumers’ everyday lives — so having a strategic alliance with foursquare to provide users with a simple, easy way to connect with their friends is a natural fit for Vlingo,” said Hadley Harris, VP of Marketing at Vlingo. The new Foursquare integration comes with similar functionality as the other features. By that I mean, you speak a simple and short command and your phone reacts accordingly. Read More

I was about to embark on a three-and-a-half-hour trek home to Connecticut from Maine after a beach weekend. I had two youngsters in the back seat and, my wife and I would quickly discover, no food. But I had gadgets, and I had apps. And I was about to find out if they could mollify an 8-year-old boy, Luca, and an 11-year-old girl, Juliana, more effectively than snacks. A little preview: if you have a BlackBerry, pack lots of snacks. An Android requires fewer, and an iPhone (or, better yet, an iPad) may completely replace road food, if you choose your apps well. My general philosophy is that staring silently out the window is one of the more rewarding uses of brain power. But when that gets old, the children’s bickering gets loud and you notice that two nearby drivers are engaged in highway texting (for real), philosophy does not help. Read More
Yelp’s local search and reviews service has finally landed in the Android Market, with a few cool features rarely seen in first-release apps.  With location-based tools becoming more practical and popular on smartphones, here are a few other apps that will help you get familiar with your surroundings. The monocle tool adds augmented reality layers to your surroundings, giving you this necessary information overlaid through your phone camera. Google Maps has added an update to support Google Latitude, the tool that brings your friends (Google contacts) into your map. By: Clint Boulton 2010-07-16 Article Rating: / 1 When Apple acquired Siri in April, industry watchers immediately wondered how Google would respond. Siri created a personal assistant application that enables users to speak requests such as "find me a taxi," or "book me a reservation at a French restaurant," and have their action items fulfilled. Siri adds layers of semantic and artificial intelligence that go beyond what Google currently offers in its search by voice application. But with more people buying phones based on Google's Android OS, the logical questions to ask are how and when Google would match Apple's Siri move. The when is anyone's guess. The how may lie in Vlingo, which offers its own applications that blend speech recognition with natural language processing. Vlingo allows users to speak into their phones to access contacts in the users' personal address book. The company has 5 million downloads. More than two million Read More

Google launched its App Inventor in closed beta this week, creating a lot of excitement around the new DIY tool for making Android apps.  The idea is to make programming and development an easy task, so you can focus on the features, distribution and monetization of your mobile presence.  Get ready for the Android Market to get flooded. eBay’s Android app also made its way around the world, launching Australian, British and Canadian apps.  Debuting at the same time as eBay’s iPhone app dedicated to mobile sellers, the virtual action house is pouring a lot of resources Read More
If there is one thing I love, it’s technological advancements that provide a mean to an end with the least amount of physical work possible. Call it efficient, call it amazing…I often like to just call it lazy. But if your tired fingers just can’t muster the strength to use your phone the old-fashioned way, thank heaven there is Vlingo. Ok, there are certain instances where a voice search application like Vlingo equates to a seamless and easy user experience for situations where typing might not be ideal (driving come to mind), and the new addition of SuperDialer eliminates 90 percent of the steps you would traditionally take to search for a restaurant or business, find their phone number, and place a call. With SuperDialer simply state what sort of restaurant you’d like to call and Vlingo takes care of the rest. For instance, asking SuperDialer to call a Chinese take-out Read More
By: Clint Boulton 2010-07-15 Article Rating: / 0 Vlingo, which makes speech recognition software for smartphones, released a  SuperDialer feature for its Android application that connects users to businesses on the Web. Vlingo's applications let users of Apple's iPhone, Google Android devices, RIM BlackBerry handsets, Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 gadgets trigger phone calls via voice instead of manual dialing on a touch screen or QWERTY keyboard. Vlingo for Android enables people to call friends, family and colleagues listed in the smartphone's personal address book. Users can speak text messages into the phone to send to users. SuperDialer, demonstrated here, takes the Vlingo functionality up a notch by letting users touch Vlingo's Tap & Speak widget and speak the name of a business with which they wish to connect. The tool is especially useful for helping travelers to cities foreign to them call taxis or make restaurant reservations. Once users tap the widget, Read More
Android Vlingo app gets SuperDialer
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Vlingo continues to improve its voice-activated apps and the Android version will now include a “SuperDialer” to make calling easier. Vlingo SuperDialer is sort of like the Genius button on the myTouch 3G Slide on steroids: tap the widget and then tell it what you want to call. Voice dialing is nothing new but this integrates with your phone and the mobile Web to allow you to dial things quickly even if you don’t have the exact number. Pizza’s great, we all love it. I tried out the SuperDialer to acquire some of this cheesy goodness and it will give you different options depending on how you phrase the request, what’s in your contact list and even where you are. This could be especially useful if you’re on the road, I would imagine. “Consumers who have experienced the convenience and safety of Vlingo have asked for more ways to use it Read More
Vlingo Corporation has announced the release of a new feature for thei voice dialer application widget.  Called SuperDialer, it lets users access an infinite phone book of contacts, businesses, and more.  It's as simple as tapping the home screen widget and tell the phone what to do.  For example, you might want to call a local restaurants to make reservations for dinner.  Press the Tap & Speak widget and say, "Call Applebee's in Akron, Ohio".  That's it! “Consumers who have experienced the convenience and safety of Vlingo have asked for more ways to use it on the go,” said Dave Grannan, president & CEO at Vlingo. “Adding SuperDialer was a natural progression to the product. With Vlingo, people no longer need to use a phone book, call 411 or search the web just to call a business. Instead you can just say what you want to do and we turn your Read More
In some cities, pulling out a transit map is an open invite to solicitations from panhandlers, swindlers and car services. But you can avoid such nuisances if you own a smartphone. Then you only have to avoid being ripped off by your cell carrier, or an incompetent software developer. There are many hundreds of mobile apps that help you navigate transit systems around the world. They are almost too easy to create — because many municipalities distribute their transit information widely and freely — and they can be profitable, because users think nothing of spending a buck on one. But these apps can also be a headache for developers to manage over the long term, because transit service can change frequently in any given city. And if you, as a consumer, download an app that has no legs, you pay dearly in wasted time or worse, a trip to the wrong Read More
In addition to the Vlingo voice app is the Vlingo start screen widget. Vlingo's voice search app has long had a strong presence on BlackBerry and iPhone. Now it's laying claim to Android phones, too. While many smartphones have some measure of voice commands baked in, Vlingo's premium offering ($9.99) adds the capability to launch apps, update your Twitter status, and send e-mail and text messages when you bark orders at it. (We'd love to see voice commands for playing music and taking photo and video, too.) Vlingo will also dial your contacts, plumb Google Maps, and search Google or Yahoo. We should mention that there is a short learning curve in picking up the right voice triggers to get Vlingo to search and perform tasks. One of the more compelling reasons for frequent drivers to purchase Vlingo is the app's capability to read you text messages and e-mails through SafeReader, Read More

Awesome when your listening to Pandora in your car and a text comes in, it lowers the volume of your music and reads the text out loud. All this happens through my car speakers. Very cool. Didn't give it 5 stars only because it wont let you close the program. You have to force close it. I hate having things running in the background of my phone that I'm not using at the moment.

Great App But Needs Two Things I love this app. I recently used it on an 8 hour car trip and it worked advertised. Please give us the option of changing or customizing the "Wake Up" command. Number two is when Vlingo states "Web Search" why can't the user say Yes or No or an OK or Cancel instead of having to manually push the "OK" or "Cancel" button. Lastly, it would be nice to have Vlingo read my all of my email back to me in sequence when I ask it to open my K9 Mail or any email client. Otherwise, this is the best app ever.

Need to fix the bluetooth issue Aside from the bluetooth issue Vlingo is a very good app. The auto (beta) works great and the app overall has better voice recognition and ability to perform tasks than voice actions or other apps. But the issue with the phone rebooting with bluetooth connections on Android 2.1 and 2.2 needs to be fixed. Vlingo's response that the user should upgrade to a newer version of Android is not adequate since most users need to wait for their service provider to upgrade their OS. Be more responsive Vlingo!

This AP actually understands what I say. My Google never calls who I ask it to call, in stead it will go search for that person online...weird.

Always works beautifully for me.

Recognition is very good, especially with the added voice pack. What would make it PERFECT is support for google voice.

Apart from not always getting my accent right and turning my words into nonsense (which is actually fun because deciphering my spoken texts has become a bit of a game for me and my friends) this app is totally cool. It even has some woman reading my incoming texts for me without me even touching the phone! Seriously, I have nothing bad to say about this app FIVE Stars easily.
