TUAW Best of 2011 wrap-up and editor picks
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Jan 2012 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's January 6th, 2012, and today marks the end of the TUAW Best of 2011 awards. This was a massive undertaking, with 25 separate categories all requiring their own nominations and voting from our readers. We've learned some lessons for next year's event -- start earlier, watch for astroturfing in the nominations, drop some unpopular categories -- and the Best of 2012 will be even better. The editorial staff here at TUAW agreed with many of the reader picks, but we had our own opinions on some others. We want to thank all of the thousands of TUAW readers who took time to consider their favorite accessories and apps, nominate them for an award, and then vote in the competition. Without further ado, here's the full list of winners as well as our picks for the TUAW Best of 2011: Editor picks: 13" and 11" MacBook Air, 13" MacBook Pro Peripheral Read More

To vote, select one entry from the top nominations made by readers. We'll be announcing the winner in just a few days. Vote early and often! TUAW is asking for your votes for the best iPhone navigation app of 2011. All of these apps have one thing in common -- they provide point-to-point navigation to points of interest. Another app that uses the iPhone's GPS capabilities but doesn't Read More
During December and January, The Unofficial Apple Weblog is soliciting your nominations and votes for the best products for Mac, iPhone/iPod touch, and iPad. We'll start with nominations in a category, and then tally your votes for the top-nominated products a few days later. The winner in each category receives the highly-coveted title of TUAW Best of 2011. Today's category for nominations in the TUAW Best of 2011 awards is iPhone navigation apps. These are the apps that give you turn-by-turn directions as you make your way around town, and they've been getting better as time goes by. Perhaps you are a fan of the free crowdsourced nab app Waze, which has a 4 out of 5 star rating on the App Store with over 29,000 user reviews. Or maybe you love the TomTom U.S.A. app ($39.99) with its ability to guide you with celebrity voices (Homer Simpson, anyone?). GPS by Read More
By Jennifer Allen on October 20th, 2011 New search functionality and more social features for this increasingly intelligent navigational app. What’s the best way of knowing how to travel around an area? A satnav app like ? That would be an easy thing to assume but it’s actually the wrong answer. The best way to explore anywhere is via local knowledge, right down to knowing where the regular traffic hotspots are or a new set of roadworks, recently installed in the area. Waze has done a pretty good job in the past of providing social mobile navigation that combines gaming and crowd-sourcing in order to provide real-time, live maps and data. We already covered how useful Waze was last year, but it’s now even better thanks to a significant update in the form of 3.0. Waze 3.0 has had its entire UI redesigned in order to implement a new and more Read More

When you download Waze, you not only get a free traffic & navigation app, but also become part of the local driving community in your area, joining forces with other drivers nearby to outsmart traffic, save time, and improve everyone’s daily commute! Here’s the update notes: Waze is available on the iPhone and iPad for free. Have an app you’d love to see featured on TiPb? Email us at iosapps@tipb.com, tell us about your app (include an iTunes link), and we’ll take a look. Read More
Waze released an updated version of its popular GPS app today to the App Store and version 3.0 adds multiple new features while also sporting an eye-catching new look. The first great thing about Waze 3.0 is that the app has been completely redesigned. I once downloaded it to try out, but removed it shortly after just because it was so ugly.  The main controls have also been nicely streamlined down to two options: menu and reports. Call me picky, but I like my apps to maintain a certain standard of design quality. Old Waze didn’t make the cut. New Waze definitely does. In addition to a design revamp, Waze revamped search. You can now search for businesses and addresses on a wide variety of services including Google, Bing, Yelp, and Foursquare. And once you choose a location, you’ll get a quick preview of its surroundings before you decide to head off Read More

Waze for iPhone has a ways to go
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Oct 2009 00:30:00 UTC +00:00
Several of our readers suggested that we take a look at Waze, a free navigation app [iTunes link] that depends on other users for reports of traffic tie ups, accidents, and speed traps. It also functions as a turn-by-turn navigator with spoken directions, although it doesn't have text to speech capabilities for naming streets or points of interest. As a navigator Waze is fine, but it seems to be missing a lot of residential addresses. Waze had a nasty habit of jumping my vehicle icon to a nearby parallel street, and while it was nice to have both 2D and 3D maps, the software seemed to change the zoom factor without me telling it to. This erratic zooming seemed to happen when I went to a menu and then returned to the map. The maps aren't very attractive. There are both day and night views for the Waze maps, but even Read More

Turn-by-turn navigation was one of the features that iPhone users were most looking forward to with the release of the iPhone 3.0 software. Unfortunately, as users quickly found out, turn-by-turn meant either significantly more expensive apps, or a monthly fee. Not only does Waze do it for free, but it offers an interesting gaming element to boot. The reason Waze can be free while other turn-by-turn apps are expensive is that their maps are entirely user-generated. Waze simply lays down a foundation and users build out the roads just by using the app. And the company makes it in your interest to help them not only by offering turn-by-turn functionality, but also by turning the mapping of uncharted areas into a game or sorts. If you’re on a road that no Waze user has mapped before, you will see little dots and your car icon will turn into a Pac-Man-like character, Read More

Crowd-sourced traffic and live maps now here!
tryggr 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Drivers needed, even passively (just driving with it on) to make the routing/live map as good as it is in Israel. But this app is solid, features, algorithms, all solid. Creating new roads is easy and and seeing other Wazers around is gratifying. Can't wait for voice.
Social Driving network
mepilot1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Using users GPS, this app allows the network to get real time traffic data. Brilliant!
Great concept, needs more people to help
Norm_driver 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great concept. Needs more people driving around and fixing the map to make it great (and free)! Same concept as Wikipedia but for commuting. I am driving around Newark, collecting points and trying it out. Anyone else around?
Buggy & unreliable
KentuckyDebbie 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I just downloaded this and I constantly get errors "Operation failed" and the data in my city (a top 10) is almost useless. Map data doesn't exist for the road I'm on (a major arterial) and the traffic data is non-existent. The closest traffic/police/accidents it found were over 1,000 miles away!
Zero stars would be far too many
KWagle 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It's not often an app leaves me speechless. But this thing is so badly buggy, I don't have the words to tell you how bad it is. I'd be very surprised if any of the positive reviews didn't actually come from the developers themselves.
Maybe good in two years
Love My iPhone! 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I just don't understand the hype. The map data is sub-par, and the alert data is nonexistent and useless. The app is cute and fun, but of no meaningful value as a navigation tool or traffic alert. I know a larger user base is needed, but really - what is all the hype about? This seems like a social experiment and not a useful tool. I had high hopes, maybe I'll be blown away in two years. The app has a long ways to go.
OptiPlex
OptiPlex 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great GPS software Great search engine great GUI Still got some routing issues but generaly gives good routes Updated all the time Conclusion: very good and keeps getting better
Ron
Tipoo 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Very cool & free navigation app.
Keeps saying I have no GPS
LiquidSpin 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Is this a bug or does is this app only work with the 3Gs iPhones? I'm using the latest 3.01 iPhone OS and I haven't been able to use this app once.
Where's the Beef?
Rather THan Grab An Umbrella...... 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
A lame attempt at a navigation application...I think. There is little road data where I want to be, the navigation is incomprehensible and the directions are nonsensical.
Great app!
BrianS2 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app will be awsome as soon as there are alot of people using it. Download now!
Valuable application
Snazzy J 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0

Drothem 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
A must have app!!! Works well Usefull Thought out. Great interface. Two thumbs up.
Great
Serenikill 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great app lots of features. Works great in my city of 60000
Garbage
Suj_S 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Don't waste your time. This thing doesn't work properly and says it can't find GPS when google maps has no problems locating me in the 4th largest city in the US.
Disappointing
NaviGadgets 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Expected a lot more based on the product description. good idea, but this app needs scale -- millions (probably tens of millions) of active drivers - to provide maps or traffic I would trust.
Not very good
PowerOfCheese 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I had high hopes for this application. It seems to work OK on my son's 3GS but on my 3G it doesn't work at all. When I start it up I get "No network, unable to display live data". It is only version 1.0 so maybe as the improvements come it will work better. My son was still not impressed even though it worked somewhat for him.
Best gps ever
RamiMor 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
If you navigate in Israel. Hopefully will be available in NY soon.
Doesn't work in Canada
wargamer17 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I decided to try this app in Canada but all I got was the car in the middle of the screen. It tried connecting and loading a map but no map was shown. Is this just cause of my location? no map data here? it should use the map app already on the phone or something. Overall nice app tho. like the idea and turn by turn navigation. I just wish I could use it here.
Needs work
mwue 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The closest event it showed me was 9 miles away when I could find other events closer in other traffic sites. Please change the map style.... It is not pretty!
Not working
kurufen 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It has errors all over this application. it has potential. but needs a lot of work. does not work in Honolulu Hawaii. "operation failed" "no gps" and other errors. we can't even see the map.
Great concept!
shai.bar 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I think Waze it's a very nice concept. It gives us a very nice maps application for free, while the others (other apps) are asking for 90$ for a country maps(like iGo). The idea of us building a public map by reporting to the Waze dev, works pretty fine(in Isreal, this app availible since a year ago).
תוכנת מפות מצויינת
oferlaor 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
תוכנת מפות מצויינת, יש כמובן עדיין טעויות, אבל בניגוד לתוכנות אחרות - אתה יכול לתקן את הטעויות בעצמך, להוסיף כבישים, לשנות מספרי בתים וכו'
Gps?
Great ! 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It always says I have no gps? Help!
A Good Start
bizsumpark182 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Although it does have it's bugs, what is here is a solid foundation and I look forward to seeing what they build on to what is here now in the future.
Awesome App
PersonaTech 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I love this App! I'm actually using it more than the Maps App that is already on the iPhone. What I would like to see is the ability to cut and paste in the address section. Overall one of the best Nav Apps avail! And the icing is that it's FREE! You guys rock! Hope we can get some sounds/voice soon  hint-hint 
Great Promise
Your Family Doctor 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
If you read up on this app, you will see that this is a very early version of what this app is to become. Even the email address (which they do respond to) is alpha at waze.com. The concept is amazing. As others have stated, it will be much better the more people contribute to it. In it's current form, it doesn't save your login info and they are aware of this bug. Amazing potential & free, so don't complain.
One of the best TMC solusions out there
Elivne 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Real time traffic is automatically reported by the device.
Shows promise but I'm not ready to switch over to it entirely.
Nitro2985 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Starting with the things to like: It's free, of course, and that's a huge plus. The only other free turn by turn GPS app out there is on Cydia and its UI leaves something to be desired. The possibility of having up to date information on speed traps and traffic are also extremely interesting.
Crashes every time. Complete waste of time.
Duke146 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I tried rebooting my phone and I even re-installed the app. It will not get past the splash screen without crashing. Waste of time, don't bother.
dangerous and stupid
lexi con 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
i downloaded this app so i can complain about it. apple brought this app to my attention by recommending it to me in an app store receipt mailing.
How...?
grem28 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Type in an address and it can't find it… therefore I can't navigate to it! Very confused!
Nice Concept , Fair execution
Djasonw 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I'm glad this APP is free as it has more bugs than a Chinese restaurant. The concept is wonderful and quite similar to Dash. Unfortunately Dash never become quite poular. I don't envision this becoming poular either because people are not going to want to keep an active App going while they're driving. If they get/make a call how many folks are going to remember to reactivate the App. Nice try. Now I'm going to delete it to free up some space. Lastly, the graphics are a joke. Think $0.99 game in the App store.
Great applicaiton and fun as well
Norm_driver 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
This has amazing potential. Using it in the Bay has left me without my Tomtom :-) Now with voice guidance i am set. Just need more people driving with it so that the traffic gets better. I leave it on all the time in my car so I can help out
Wow! Voice guidance too!
btungjr 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Although it's not stated in the description, the latest update includes turn by turn voice guidance. I can't believe this app is free! Although I think you have to be kinda high ranked to use voice guidance. I have it, and it's pretty sweet.
Love the voice turn by turn
tryggr 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Still getting some circuitous routes. Need more drivers!!
Fun Navigation app, but needs a lot of work
im14pinball 2.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
I want to like this app, I really do. I like how you get points for travelling down roads that no other wazer has explored yet. (What are the points for?) Your car turns into a Pac Man type character and gobbles up dots that are on unexplored roads. Very cute and fun to watch. BUT.. one of my biggest complaints is that about 50% of the time, I will be travelling down a road that has not been explored yet (dots on the road) and my car just stays a car and doesnt gobble up the dots and I dont accumulate any points. There are several roads that I have travelled on numerous times and have yet to get all the dots. It will gobble for about 10 points then stop... then a mile down the road it will start again.. so there is a big gap of un gobbled dots that I should have ate but didnt. Another prob... I tried to map an address. My work address and it was not found. The address lookup needs a lot of work. Also, the gps does a slow job of keeping up. I am usually farther down the road than it says I am , its about 10 seconds behind, unlike when I use the iphone map app, I am usually exactly where it says I am. Another complaint, Yes there are many, I keep getting traffic alerts for things that are 150+ miles away. They say you can set it so you only see local alerts but to set that is nowhere to be found. Another minor complaint, the Auto night/day mode does not work, I do like the fact that you can add new roads, and alert others of traffic incidents. The GPS needs to be a little smoother and quicker to respond though, because some of the roads I created look nothing like the direction I was going, due to the slow GPS response. ONE MORE THING...... When I am using this app. My battery life is reduced BIG TIME... I used this for about an hour today and was down from 90% down to 32%. CRAZY drainage! So I recommend you only use this if you have a car charger to keep your phone charging while its being used. Fix all this stuff and I will update my review. Thanks.
