WeatherBug for iPhone gets new GUI and adds features
Calendar16 Fri, 10 Feb 2012 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
There are many weather apps for the iPhone, but I'm a frequent user of the free WeatherBug app. The free version was recently updated to version 2.0 with a completely new GUI and added features such as automatic updating of weather data at your current location, along with pollen and UV data for the sun. The app has moved its settings inside the app itself, which is a plus compared to the way it was done before using system preferences. WeatherBug still has detailed and layered weather maps and a collection of local cameras so you can actually see the current weather, not just instrument readings. You can set multiple locations and check the weather at vacation destinations or just see if Mom is freezing in upstate New York. WeatherBug will alert you to severe weather at or near your location. I found the app to be stable and easy to Read More

Google adds a weather widget to iPhone and Android search
Calendar16 Tue, 25 Jan 2011 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Google launched a new weather search feature for iOS and Android browsers. When you navigate to google.com and search for "weather," you will be presented with a widget-like interface that shows your current conditions and immediate forecast. A slider will let you view a detailed hour-by-hour forecast for the upcoming 12 hours. The new feature is available only in English and uses your location information to pull down the forecast. For iPod touch users that lack a dedicated GPS, this forecast information could be hit or miss depending on the accuracy of the Wi-Fi triangulation information. You can also set your location manually, but that takes some of the fun out of it. The new search experience also works better with Google Instant turned on in the mobile browser. The settings for Google Instant appear underneath the search box when you open google.com. If you have Google Instant turned off, only Read More

WeatherBug Elite is Well Worth the Extra Dollar
Calendar16 Fri, 29 May 2009 16:30:02 UTC +00:00
05.29.09        App Score: 9/10    WeatherBug Elite – A great many iPhone and Touch users I know have the free version of WeatherBug installed on their device. I did too, for a long time and then a few weeks ago I upgraded to , which eliminates ads and provides additional features. I have a slight history with WeatherBug, well, not with it, but concerning it, so before I explain, I’ll just tell you that the upgrade to WeatherBug Elite was worth it. WeatherBug is a program developed by AWS Convergence Technologies, Inc. and it displays live, streaming weather information. In order to provide local weather, WeatherBug and television stations partner together and also involve local schools, which house cameras for WeatherBug. My first introduction to WeatherBug came when a science teacher at my son’s elementary school asked for a WeatherBug station, which apparently could also be used as Read More
App Roundup: 10 iPhone Weather Apps
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Apr 2009 16:00:12 UTC +00:00
In my line of work, I do quite a bit both indoors and outdoors. As such, it is crucial for me to know the weather forecast at the drop of a hat. The weather app built into the iPhone is a simple, no fluff, no garbage, weather app. It does its job well, but any weather app can give you the highs and lows for the day. Oftentimes I find myself needing to know the humidity, wind speeds, or sunrise/sunset times and other nonsensical information. Below is a roundup of weather apps for the iPhone, with features ranging from video forecasts to airport delays. Features: Video forecasts, Radar, Severe Weather Alerts, and Weather Indices This app’s user interface was by far my favorite, but at times it still felt a bit flawed. AccuWeather should have integrated typical iPhone gestures into the application as I often found myself wanting to swipe or Read More

Exciting Features / A Little Rough Yet
btraut 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app shows great promise. I like the information it provides over and above the official Apple weather app (wind speed, humidity, etc), and especially like the breakdown of the weather during the day.
Not bad, but buggy
Rootus 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It crashed three times while I was trying to delete the two default locations and replace them with my own. Make sure you hit save for every action when you're editing the configuration, so if it does crash you don't have to start over at the beginning.
Nice. Pretty interface
smith288 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Could use the animated radar though
Great Weather App
adam378 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I always strayed from using WeatherBug on my desktop or other mobile devices, but being that it was available for free through the App store, gave it a shot. With a great, easy to use interface, its a nice addition to the already installed "basic" weather info program on the iPhone for additional weather detail info. The only drawback is that initally (perhaps fixed in a later update) is that when going to the radar map link to Google maps, the entire globe was displayed and not the specific location placed in the apps settings.
No moving radar
Spinxter 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Without moving radar this is no different than every mobile weather site on the Internet. Nothing makes this app special.
Needs international support
iMarcus 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice app but not so useful in Australia with no support for metric units (celcius)
Not ready
RockStar 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Cool looking but has rebooted my phone three times...just removed it.
Celsius?
Sorryimlate2 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This needs to have a Celsius option. Or else not many people will be using it. Good features though
Twistyawig 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Everytime I would select current location when adding a new city, the app would crash.
Powerful, robust little app.
freelancing 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Cons: Radar shows world map first in lieu of local view. You can only have 3 locations saved at a time. They seriously need to update that. Weather condition icons are pretty cheesy. Pros: More specific than a general weather app. You can view the weather and webcam photo of a participating school or business. Very cool! Animated wind beacon shows which way the wind is blowing. Far more info here than in Apple's built in weather widget, without having to go to Safari. Very useful app that is free! This one is a keeper, but I really hope they update it.
Nothing to see here
mladd 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
They just ported a dashboard widget to the iPhone. I'll keep using the mobile WeatherUnderground.com for the weather I need, when I need it. Even ForeFlight's awesome mobile app uses wunderground.com for it's weather.
Better than web app version
mcoyne 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Could be better. More details than web app and I like the radar functionality a lot better. Although when I first set-up my location it was zoomed out to the whole world instead of the location I had selected. Once I zoomed in it seems to retain my radar location between sessions. Ability to animate the radar would kill! "Current Location" function when adding a location does not seem to work on 1st gen iphone, although it works in other apps. Shows non-functional navigation triangles even when only one location is set-up. Switching between locations does not update radar (boo!). ALSO KEEPS CRASHING MY IPHONE! BOO!
Good App
Raptor2142 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Works well. I find it much better then the stock weaather app on the iphone. The ability to see the radar picture and wind speed are cool.
Great for Cyclist
Luv2bik 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wake up check weather bug! Ride bike check weather bug. Going outside check weather bug.
Disappointing
scottkle 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Developers: check out wunderground.com to see what a weather app should look like. And the radar ... Really? Really? That's what you submitted to the app store? 2 stars because you didn't charge for it.
Good start...
Alf! 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It is an improvement over iPhone's included weather app as far as info provided, but the iPhone's still looks prettier. Few drawbacks as well, yes, radar isn't animated, and you do have to zoom the map to your location yourself from the default global view. Also, while the alert function is neat, with the little red number bubble popping up to signal an alert (same as if you receive a text or voicemail), checking the alert doesn't get rid of the little red number (like when you read the text or check the voicemail), and there's no easy way to follow up on info about the alert. For example my area has a current alert, but it simply reads "Red Flag Warning" and states its in effect until 7AM, there's nothing to click or look at to get further info. Kinda vague alert. Good start but look forward to improved weather apps in the future.
Quite disappointing...
mangaphreak 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
First of all, like so many other apps on here, it just doesn't really look or "feel" much like a real iPhone app...then, also like so many other apps on here, it's probably focussing solely on American users...!? While I can actually pick, for instance, Munich and get some information about the weather, the devs didn't even bother including a setting to change the temp from Fahrenheit to Celsius -- only for the rest of the western world...!? Yeah, thanks a bunch...!
Weather channel even better
Deviladv 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Accuweather has a front page app that sends you to the main page, which is not a web app. Weather.com sends you to their web app if you access from an iphone. Both weather.com and accuweather have moving maps but weather.com's web app has more features, and can show you nonmoving radar maps if you don't want to use bandwidth or wait 5 minutes for the moving radar to load.
Quick and simple
Katy Mc 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Shows forecast and current conditions quickly, show rain radar but no satillite radar, can change opacity of radar, can store many locations
Good Idea, Too Many Flaws
Call_Me_Anonymous 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good concept. Poor execution on some things. Cannot rearrange the order of the cities as we get accustomed to in other programs. You have to enter the cities in the reverse order from what you wish displayed. The only option under EDIT is to delete, not rearrange. Further, the forecasts are for 3 days only. NO ONE uses that any more. You can enter ONLY three cities, which hoses you if you are traveling a lot back and forth. This program doesn't really offer much more than the radar, which IS the ONE thing that is cool, especially since you can change the opacity to allow viewing of the cities with the radar super-imposed on it. Because of the radar, I give this a 2-star rating, otherwise it would have been a 1. I really doesn't give me much more than the one already built into the system, and I don't have all of the limitations. It needs to have some MAJOR work before this becomes truly useful.
Sweet!
Sprocket1313 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
A really sweet app that give you a lot of information for free.
Pretty good
Cheesekeeper 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's pretty good, and does what it says at no cost.
weather done right
reverb09 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
love the radar view over google maps, i've been dying for that. the weather station options and cameras are excellent. nice job.
Doens Work in my iPod Touch
samis70 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
No funciona en mi ipod touch de 1era Generacion, que puedo hacer ??
Needs animated radar and update...
Doctor Spin 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Update this app please. In said update, please include animated radar, 5 day forecast and bug fixes. Thanks.
Angering Users is Bad Strategy
Bozocity 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
I was going to delete WeatherBug today for being not nearly as good as other weather apps, when I saw it offered a downgrade to an ad-supported version with new features. I was impressed by the developer's candor in explaining why something with potential was being downgraded instead, even as it was obvious the developer knew he was stupid for poisoning his app, and I realized other weather apps are similarly plagued with ads, so I decided to check out the new features. Most prominent is the reliable new Auto Crash feature, making WeatherBug too unstable to evaluate. Other weather apps are allowed ads because they made the mistake of having them from the beginning, and people expect them from large commercial entities who do not offer paid versions. WeatherBug violates the culture of the AppStore. Free versions are accepted as demos with less functionality than paid versions. Free versions that say, "Drop dead; you're second-class to us developers if you won't pay" do not earn endearment. Research shows that adware fails in this marketplace. This version is the beginning of the end for WeatherBug, especially with its nagging instability. There is hope. The developer could urgently pull the downgrade from the store and rethink the strategy of which features in a free version would move folks to buy a paid version -- if a paid version is viable in a market crowded with good freeware. The new free version then would have to comply with the other dictate of the App Store's culture, which is never to remove features in a supposed upgrade. Whatever good new features are in this poisoned version will have to stay when the ads are removed. The decision to change from legible Google maps to scrappy Microsoft maps is deplorable. It lowers the quality of the maps while forcing users to support Redmond, other incentives to delete the app. WeatherBug has great potential if the author would pull the ads, fix the crashing, and restore the maps. Also needs to swap the slider for choosing saved locations to a pick list, matching its competitors' faster, superior interface.
Nice weather app, radar needs improvements
pb30 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice and simple (and free) weather app. I like that the radar is over a Google Map, so you can scroll/zoom in exactly where you want. However the radar isn't animated, a big drawback.
Very nice for what it does...
bdkennedy 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Easy to use and fast. Nice looking. However in addition to the severe weather alerts, I would have liked to have seen the app use the iPhone's sounds to alert me. If the phone is in my pocket the alerts don't do me any good unless there is some sort of audio to tell me to take the phone out of my pocket.
Giant adverts minus features = fail
CM Harrington 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app used to be my favourite weather app on the app store. The latest version includes intrusive adverts and removes features that were in the prior version. Those old features are now in an "elite" version which is a pay app. This is exactly the way to alienate your userbase.
